Helen Warren Ballou
Helen Warren Ballou, 70, of 1231 Sinai Road, South Boston died February 9, 2004 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mrs. Ballou was born in Kemper County, Mississippi on December 13, 1933, the daughter of the late Matthew Dee Warren and Ophelia Payne Warren, and was married to Herbert Hoover Ballou. She was a member of Banister Hill Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband; four daughters, Felicia B. Louis, Joannie Ballou and Shelia B. Lewis, all of New York, and Regina Ballou of South Boston; one son, Herbert E. Ballou Jr. of South Boston; four grandchildren; three brothers, Paul Warren, David Warren and Matthew Warren, all of Long Island, N.Y.; six sisters, Murlene Frierson, Arguther Carbo, Joan Northern, Jeanette Warren and Ophelia Warren, all of Bronx, N.Y., and Earlene Cloud of Teaneck, N.J.; one daughter-in-law, Martha Ballou; devoted friends, Janice White, Delois Logan, Diane Johnson, Hattie Sims and Loraine Dance.
A funeral service for Mrs. Ballou will be held February 14 at 11 a.m. at Banister Hill Baptist Church with Bishop Allen Graves officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery.
After 11 a.m. February 13, the remains will lie-in-state at the Crawford House in Halifax. The family will receive friends at the home.
Margaret Wilborn Bane
Margaret Wilborn Bane, 78, of 2205 Willow Street, South Boston died January 7, 2004 at her home.
Mrs. Bane was born in Halifax County on July 30, 1925, the daughter of Herbert Wilborn and Lillie Conner Wilborn and was married to Harold Lewis Bane Sr. She was a member of Ash Avenue Baptist Church and retired from J.P. Stevens.
Survivors include one son, Harold L. Bane Jr. and wife, Nancy, of South Boston; three sisters, Lula Wilbourn, Winnie Newby and Betty Wazeka, all of South Boston; two granddaughters, Marty D. Bane of Centreville and Hope B. Kvasnicka of Petersburg; and one grandson, Wesley Harold Bane of Petersburg.
Services for Mrs. Bane will be held at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel tomorrow, January 10 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. John Eure officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery.
The family will receive friends this evening between 7:00 and 8:30, at Brooks Funeral Home, and other times at the home of her son, 2005 Eastover Drive, South Boston.

Woody Kent Bane Sr.
Funeral services for Woody Kent Bane Sr., the Town of Halifax's beloved "major-domo" for 23 years and Halifax County Sheriff for 12 years, were held Sunday at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church.
Burial followed in the church cemetery with the Rev. John Wilder and the Rev. Bill Wilkins conducting services.
The retired sheriff died Friday, January 2, 2004, at this home in Halifax.
Mr. Bane's law enforcement career spanned 50 years.
As sheriff, Bane started the Community Watch Program and was well known for his work with young people.
As chief of police and town manager for the Town of Halifax, he is remembered by residents for his kind manner and Andy Griffith-style solutions to problems.
He is survived by his wife, Sarah Elizabeth "Betty" Umphlette Bane, daughter Sarah Bane Williams and husband Robert Luther Terrell Williams, son Woody Kent Bane Jr. and wife Katherine Switzer Bane, and five grandchildren, Sarah Elizabeth Bane Williams and Dora Terrell "Dolly" Williams of Richmond and Woody Kent Bane III, Katherine Elizabeth Stuart Bane and Mary Margaret Bane of Halifax.
Mr. Bane was the son of John Jinks Bane and Birda Moorefield Bane who preceded him in death. He is survived by his brother, Lacy Weldon Bane, and a sister-in-law, Thelma Hughes Bane, of Vernon Hill.
He was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters: Garland Kermit Bane, Dorothy Bane Hodnett, Molly Lillian Bane, Jack Warren Bane and James Edward Bane.
Mr. Bane graduated from Wilson Memorial High School in 1941 and attended the National Business College in Roanoke.
He joined the U.S. Navy and was honorably discharged in February of 1946. He served in World War II in the Pacific, European, Asiatic and African theaters. He was in the invasion of Normandy and landed on Omaha Beach at D-Day. He shared those stories with school children for many years.
Mr. Bane was a trustee and deacon of Center United Church of Christ, a member of Masonic Lodge 96 and VFW Post 8243. He was a former chairman of the Halifax County Democratic Party and numerous other civic organizations locally and statewide.

Alice Coleman Barksdale
Alice Coleman Barksdale, 79, of 1077 Cedar Grove Road, South Boston died January 5, 2004.
Mrs. Barksdale was born in Halifax County on October 14, 1924, the daughter of William Coleman and Fannie Tucker Coleman and was married to James William Barksdale Sr. She was a member of Dan River Bethel Baptist Church and a retired employee of Halifax Regional Hospital.
Survivors include her husband; four daughters, Dorothy Brigham of South Boston, Alease Parson of Clinton, Md., Sallie Nash of Spring Valley, N.Y. and Mildred Williams of Waldorf, Md.; 11 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Barksdale was preceded in death by a son, James W. Barksdale Jr.
A funeral service will be held tomorrow, January 8 at 1 p.m. at Dan River Bethel Baptist with the Rev. James L. Thomas officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the home.
Ocie Barksdale
Ocie Barksdale, 76, of 1070 Union Grove Road, South Boston died February 25, 2004 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mr. Barksdale was born in Pittsylvania County on June 5, 1927, the son of the late Charlie Barksdale and Mattie Waller Barksdale and was married to Annie Younger Barksdale. He was a member of Millstone Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Joyce Marie Mitchell of South Boston and Bonnie Barksdale of Greensboro, N.C.; six sons, Allen Younger of The Bronx, N.Y., Wayne Younger of Philadelphia, Pa, James Lawrence Barksdale of Greensboro, Calvin Barksdale and Jerry Barksdale, both of South Boston, and Rickey Barksdale of Boston Mass.; one sister, Nannie Barksdale Hamlett of Fort Wayne, Ind.; 18 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two daughters-in-law, Cheryl Barksdale and Mae Willie Younger; his mother-in-law, Sarah Louise Hendricks of South Boston; and one sister-in-law, Marie Hubbard of Washington, D.C.
A funeral service for Mr. Barksdale will be held February 29 at 2:30 p.m. at Millstone Baptist Church with the Rev. Chester Spruill officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Betty Lou Sparrow Barksdale
Funeral services were held for Mrs. Betty Lou Sparrow Barksdale of Richmond, formerly of Halifax County, on March 10 in Richmond.
Pastor Bessie Mitchell conducted the service at the Hattie T. Jenkins Memorial Chapel, with burial following at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
Mrs. Barksdale, 61, died March 5, 2004.
She was born in Halifax County on March 12, 1942, a daughter of Fannie Sparrow Dean and the late James Sparrow.
She is survived by her husband, Sylvester F. Barksdale, two daughters, Michele C. James of Victorville, California, and Angela Cunningham of Richmond, one grandson, Zion E. James, and her mother, Fannie Bell Dean.
Also surviving are three sisters, Linda Jefferies of Pennsauken, N.J., Terry Gilmore and Deborah Dean of Richmond, four brothers, Fred Sparrow of Richmond, Marshall Sparrow of Alexandria, George Sparrow of Halifax and Charles Dean of Baltimore, M.D. Other survivors include one aunt, Juanita Womack, one uncle, Joseph Dabbs, and a host of other relatives and friends.
Addison Oliver Bates
Addison Oliver Bates, 65, of 2105 Vaughan Street, South Boston died January 22, 2004 at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Mr. Bates was born in Halifax County on June 29, 1938, the son of the late Frank Thornton Bates and Mary Jones Bates and was married to the late Christine Wilson Bates. He was an ABB retiree.
A funeral service was held January 24 at 2 p.m. at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Sean McKenzie officiating. Burial followed in Virgilina Cemetery.
Survivors of Mr. Bates include three daughters, Janet Wallace and husband, John, of Clover, Tammy Smith of Scottsburg, and Kelly Epps and husband, Dwight, of Highland Springs; one son, Rick Bates and wife, Connie, of Church Hill, Tenn.; two sisters, Diane Austin of Scottsburg and Brenda Powell of South Boston; one brother, Ken Bates of Cumberland; a devoted brother-in-law and his wife, A.G. and Edith Wilson, of Virgilina; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one step-grandson; and one step-great-grandchild. He was also preceded in death by one sister, Laline Adkins.
Dr. Jesse James Bates
South Boston lost a beloved physician and community leader with the death of Dr. Jesse James Bates Monday.
Dr. Bates, of College Street in South Boston, died Feb. 23, 2004 at his residence at the age of 83.
He was born in Halifax county on June 6, 1920 to the late Harry Lee Bates and Sarah Poindexter Bates.
Dr. Bates was married to the late Juanita Harden Bates and was a dedicated physician for more than 50 years.
An Air force veteran, Dr. Bates was formerly a member of the South Boston School Board, the Board of Directors of Halifax Regional Hospital, American Legion Post 99 and the Business and Professional Council.
He was a deacon of the Sunflower Baptist Church.
Dr. Bates is survived by one daughter, Dr. Sandra Bates Grant of Nashville, Tenn., one brother, Richard Bates of Nathalie, two grandchildren, Robert and Angela Grant, both of Nashville, one son-in-law, Robert Grant Sr. of Nashville, one sister-in-law, one brother-in-law, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Dr. Bates will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. with services at the Sunflower Baptist Church.
The Rev. Robert Tucker will officiate.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Leslie Jeanett Hupp Bebber
Funeral services for Mrs.Leslie Hupp Thomas Bebber will be held at the Powell Funeral Home Chapel at 2 p.m. Monday.
The Rev. Garland Day will officiate.
Burial will follow at the Oak Ridge Cemetery.
Mrs. Bebber died Friday, February 6, 2004 at her South Boston home.
She was 99.
Mrs. Bebber was the daughter of the late Daniel Layafette Hupp and Charley Beatrice Allen Hupp and was married first to William Ephraim Thomas and later to Howie Jones Bebber.
She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church of South Boston.
Mrs. Bebber is survived by two daughters, Geneva T. Snow and husband Frank of South Boston and Dorothy T. Tuck and husband Walter of Roxboro, two sons, Cary D. Thomas and wife Doris of South Boston and Carl Vance Bebber and wife Nancy of Montpelier, one stepson, Jake C. Bebber of South Boston, 25 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three sons, William J. Thomas, Cecil B. Thomas and Robert L. Thomas, one step-son, Howard Bebber, one step daughter, Virginia Baynes and one grandson, Blenton Conner.

Daniel Joseph Bishop
Daniel Joseph Bishop, 47, of 1191 Mount Laurel Road, Clover, formerly of North Berwick, Maine, died March 14, 2004 at his home.
Mr. Bishop was born in Westfield, Maine the son of Edwin Bishop and Ann Zawada Bishop. He was the husband of Ruth Ellen Bishop, and a member of Mt. Laurel United Methodist Church and was a Veteran of the US Coast Guard.
Survivors include his wife of Clover; his parents of Westfield; two sisters, Marianne Reed of Ashland, Ore. and Ellen Emmonds of Westfield; and one brother, Jim Bishop of Westfield.
Funeral services for Mr. Bishop will be held March 19 at 11 a.m. at Mt. Laurel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Don Pizzeck officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday evening at Powell Funeral Home from 7:00 until 8:30.
A memorial service will be held April 3 at Westfield Evangelical Free Church at 11:30 a.m. with calling hours from 10:30 until 11:30 a.m.

Colby Lynn Blanks
Graveside services for the infant Colby Lynn Blanks were held Sunday, March 28, 2004, at Halifax Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Rudolph Jacobs conducting the service.
The infant died March 25 at Person Memorial Hospital in Roxboro, N.C.
He is survived by the mother, Dana Kay Blanks of Roxboro, N.C., the father, Johnny Williams Jr., of Scottsburg, the maternal grandparents, Ronnie and Melinda Blanks of Roxboro, N.C., the maternal grandmother, Sherry Blanks of Clover, the paternal grandparents, Dennis and Janice Puryear of Scottsburg, the paternal grandfather, Johnny Mack Williams Sr., of Scottsburg, and one sister, Kaylee Williams of Roxboro, N.C.
Ricky Lee Brame
Rickey Lee Brame, 53, of Clarkston, Ga., formerly of South Boston, died February 10, 2004 in Atlanta, Ga.
Mr. Brame was born September 8, 1950, the son of Andrew Brame and Martha Green Brame and was married to Arlis Bishop Brame. He was a member of Memorial Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Dannette Bishop and Chamarla Brame, both of Atlanta; his father of South Boston; two brothers, Andrew Brame Jr. of Forestville, Md. and Randy Brame of Clinton, Md.; his father-and-mother-in-law, James and Delores Bishop of Baltimore, Md.
A funeral service for Mr. Brame will be held February 15 at 2 p.m. at Memorial Baptist Church with the Rev. Richard Terry officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Mary James Brandon
Mary James Brandon, 67, of 2034 Blane Road, Alton died February 24, 2004 at her home.
Mrs. Brandon was born in Danville on December 30, 1936, the daughter of the late Lucille Swain James and Norman Guy James and was married to Harrell B. Brandon.
She was a member of South Boston Church of God where she was a Sunday School teacher and member of the choir. Mrs. Brandon was also a former member of the Halifax County Rescue Squad, and retired from Collins & Aikman Products.
A funeral service will be held today, February 27 at 2 p.m. at South Boston Church of God with the Revs. Bruce Hagy, Vance Midgett and Dennis Ball officiating. Burial will follow in Alton Baptist Church Cemetery.
Survivors of Mrs. Brandon include her husband; one son, Edward H. Brandon and his wife, Shana, of Hurdle Mills, N.C.; one daughter, Jean B. Turner of Prospect Hill, N.C.; three grandsons, Andy Brandon, Blake Ward and Colton Turner; and one granddaughter, Samantha Turner. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Earl 'Jack' James and Authur James.
