Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

Allie Bennett Crowder Jr.

Allie Bennett Crowder Jr., 85, of Semora, N.C. died April 1, 2004 at the home of his daughter.

Born in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of the late Allie Thomas and Ottie Abbott Crowder and was married to Mildred Rimmer Crowder. He was a retired farmer and a member of Semora Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters and their spouses, Ann C. and Billy Murray of Alton and Joan C. and Joe Slade of Blanch, N.C.; one brother, Jack R. Crowder of Pelham, N.C.; three sisters, Bessie C. Long of Yanceyville, N.C., Mattie C. Ferguson of Greenville, N.C., and Vivian C. Davis of Danville; two grandchildren, Mike Murray and his wife, Carrie, and Heath Slade; two great-grandchildren, William Murray and Kristal Tate.

Mr. Crowder was preceded in death by four brothers, Abbott, John, Harvey, and Howard Crowder; and his closest friend, John Martin Scott.

Funeral services will be held April 4 at 2 p.m. at Brooks & White Funeral Home Chapel in Roxboro, N.C. with Pastor John Bradsher officiating. Burial will follow in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens in Danville.

The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 6-8, at the funeral home.

Lucille Overstreet Daniel

Lucille Overstreet Daniel, 84, of 201 Pine Lane, South Boston died January 29, 2004 at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Mrs. Daniel was born in Halifax County on January 12, 1920, the daughter of Jesse R. Overstreet and Gracie Crenshaw Overstreet and was married to Clifton Norman Daniel Sr. She was a member of Pleasant Grove Christian Church.

Survivors include one son, Norman Daniel Jr. of South Boston; two sisters, Hilda O. Daniel of South Boston and Janice O. Montgomery of Largo, Fla.; four brothers, Jesse R. Overstreet Jr. of Clarksville, James E. Overstreet of Virginia Beach, C. Thurman Overstreet of Dillwyn, and Hunter D. Overstreet of South Boston; two granddaughters; and three great-grandchildren.

A graveside service for Mrs. Daniel was held February 1 at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Christian Church Cemetery with the Rev. James Dane Skelton officiating.

Arnie Lee Davis Jr.

Arnie Lee Davis Jr., 66, of Nathalie, died Friday, April 9, at Lynchburg General Hospital.

He was born in Pittsylvania County on January 20, 1938, the son of Arnie Lee Davis Sr. and Beatrice Oakes Davis and was married to Betty Pittmon Davis.
He was a member of First Baptist Church Republican Grove.

Mr. Davis is survived by his wife, three daughters, Donna Wazeka and husband Donald of Clover, Bonnie Hamlett and husband Scott of Volens and Connie Deaner and husband John of Brookneal, two sons, Arnie Lee Davis III and wife Kim of Lynchburg and Cleve Davis and wive Angela of South Boston, four sisters, Effie Millner of Lynchburg, Mildred Eanes of Danville, Carolyn Waller of Nathalie and Christine Moore of North Carolina, three brothers, the Rev. Harper Davis of Halifax, David Davis of Nathalie and Charles Davis of Florida, 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services were held Sunday, April 11, at First Baptist Church Republican Grove with the Rev. Shelton Miles officiating. Burial took place in the church cemetery.

Those wishing to give memorials are asked to consider the First Baptist Church Republican Grove Building Fund.

E.M. ‘Dave’ Davis

E.M. "Dave" Davis, 78, died Thursday, March 25, 2004.

He was a native of South Boston and was a member of the Bayside Masonic Lodge #218, A.F. & A.M.

Mr. Davis was the founder of D&M Seafood, which he opened in 1964.

He is survived by two sons, Michael Davis and wife Sharon and Harold Davis and wife Sharon, one sister, Barbara Puryear, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 30, at Bayside Baptist Church with the Rev. Mark Pullen officiating.

Burial will follow in Rosewood Memorial Park, Virginia Beach.

The family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel Monday from 6 to 8 p.m.

Sallie Lipford Davis

Sallie Lipford Davis, 78, of Catawba, N.C. died February 3, 2004 at Clinch Valley Medical Center.

A funeral service will be held today, February 6 at 2 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Home, Indian Trail Chapel with the Rev. Lawrence Funderburk officiating.

Burial will follow at Ritch Cemetery.

Mrs. Davis was born February 16, 1925, in Halifax County the daughter of the late Wilson and Sallie Ann Lipford, and was married to the late Roy C. Davis. She was a member of Welcome Baptist Church.

Survivors include six sons, George W. Shearin and wife, Colleen, of Indian Trail, N.C., David R. Shearin and wife, Janet, of New Salem, N.C., R. Wilfred Shearin of Monroe, N.C., Dexter D. Davis and wife, Myra, of Mebane, N.C., Michael Davis and wife, Wanda, of Monroe, and Larry Davis of Kernersville, N.C.; one daughter, Diane Rogich and husband, John of Richlands; one brother, Keith Morris of South Boston; 21 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Davis was also preceded in death by one son, Harold E. Shearin; and a grandson, Chad Davis.

William Gravely Davis

William ‘Bill’ Gravely Davis of Franklin County died at his home February 27, 2004.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Russell Lewis Davis and Winifred Skinnell Davis.

Mr. Davis graduated from VMI and the University of Richmond Law School and served in the United States Army. He served as Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Virginia; as Commonwealth’s Attorney of Franklin County, and later joined the family law firm.

Survivors include his wife, Karen Webb Davis; a son and daughter-in-law, William Pearson Davis and Caroline Cooper Davis; a granddaughter, Isabelle Cooper Davis; a brother and three sisters and their spouses, Russell Lewis Davis and Betsy Naff Davis, Emily Davis London and Dean Londos, Julia Davis Tye and Thomas Tye, and Katherine Davis Rand and Michael Rand.

A memorial service for Mr. Davis will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church in Rocky Mount today, March 1, at 11 a.m.

Those wishing to give memorials are asked to consider “The Giles and Davis, Class of 1964, Scholarship,” VMI, c/o The VMI Keydet Club, P.O. Box 932, Lexington, 24450, or the charity of your choice.

Curtis Lee Dismuke

Mr. Curtis Lee Dismuke of Richmond, and formerly of Clover, died Saturday, February 7, 2004 at Chippenham Hospital in Richmond.

Mr. Dismuke was 46 years of age at the time of his death.

Mr. Dismuke was born in Halifax County on November 8, 1957, the son of the late Stonewall Jackson Dismuke and Queen Ester Cousins Dismuke.

He was a member of the Zion Grove Baptist Church and was a supervisor with Richmond Coal Storage.

Mr. Curtis Lee Dismuke is survived by three daughters, Miss Lashelle Staten, Miss Keisha Staten and Miss Miyomi Dismuke, all of Richmond; his mother, Mrs.. Queen C. Dismuke of Clover; three sisters, Mrs. Wanda Vaughters of Clover, and Mrs. Sandra Thomas and Mrs. Sherri Jones, both of Richmond; one brother, Mr. Dennis Dismuke of Red House; a devoted friend, Ms. Nancy Staten of Richmond; one step-son, Mr. Clinton Staten; four nieces, one nephew and a host of aunts, uncles, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Mr. Curtis Lee Dismuke will be held Thursday, February 12, at 2 p.m., at Zion Grove Baptist Church in Clover, with the Rev. Jefferson Goode officiating.

Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the home of Mrs. Queen Dismuke, 3016 Green Valley Road, Clover.

Joseph Ditta

Joseph Ditta, 77, of South Boston died March 31, 2004 at The Woodview.

Mr. Ditta was a landscaper and grounds keeper and was employed by Walter and Barbara Bass of South Boston.

Memorial services will be private.

Cecelia Mae Dixon

Funeral services for Ms. Cecelia Mae Dixon will be held Tuesday, February 10, 2004, at 2 p.m. with services at the County Line Baptist Church.

The Rev. Otis Dillard will officiate.

Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Ms. Dixon, of Leda Road in Nathalie, died Saturday, February 7, 2004 at the Halifax Regional Hospital.

She was 52.

Ms. Dixon was born in Halifax County on December 13, 1951 to Lillie Myrtle Dixon.

She was a member of the County Line Baptist Church.

Ms. Dixon is survived by four aunts, Virginia Hightower and Shirley A. Dixon, both of Vernon Hill, Olivia Dixon of Nathalie, and Eva M. Fitzgerald of Williamstown, N.J., three great aunts, three great uncles and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.

The family will receive friends at the home of Mrs.Oliva Dixon, 1060 Leda Road in Nathalie.

Ora Mae Jackson Doran

Ora Mae Jackson Doran, 74, of Halifax, died Thursday, April 8, 2004, at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Mrs. Doran was born in Rhode Island on January 9, 1930, and was a member of New Zion Baptist Church.

She is survived by the very devoted Elijah Edmonds Sr. of Bridgeport, Conn., seven daughters, Lori Belton of South Boston, Pamula Davis of Halifax, Loretta Edmonds, Tanya Edmonds and Tshmona Cooper, all of Bridgeport, Conn., Cynthia Hicks of East Haven, Conn., and Wanda Simmons of New Haven, Conn., five sons, James Doran, Willie Daley and Elijah Edmonds Jr., all of Bridgeport, Conn., Richard Doran of Hollis, N.H., and Theodore Doran of Bronx, N.Y., two sisters, Patricia Ross and Eileen Jackson, both of New Haven, Conn., two brothers, Milton Jackson Sr., of New Haven, Conn., and William Jackson of Bridgeport, Conn., four step-children, Barbara Edmonds Foster and Samuel A. Younger, both of Halifax, Bobby B. Edmonds of Fairfax and Stephen E. Edmonds of Bridgeport, Conn., 24 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, one daughter-in-law and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Doran was preceded in death by one son, Melvin Smith, and one brother, Oling Jackson Jr.

Funeral services will be held Monday, April 12, at 2 p.m. at the Chapel of Crawford House with the Rev. Willie N. Yancey officiating. Burial will take place Wednesday, April 14, at Park Cemetery in Bridgeport, Conn.

The family will receive friends at the home of Lori Belton, 302 McKinney Street, South Boston.

Richard M. Duckett

A memorial service will be held for Richard M. Duckett on Saturday, January 17, 2004 at 7 p.m. at Twiford's Funeral Chapel in Manteo, N.C. The Rev. Brad Bradshaw will officiate.

Mr. Duckett, 64, of Kill Devil Hills, NC, died January 11 in his home. Born in Oelwein, Iowa, he was married to Marion Brown Duckett.

He served in the U.S. Navy and was a plank owner of the USS Mars. After leaving the Navy, he worked for Unisys Corporation. During his time with Unisys, he lived in Woodbridge, Burnsville, Mn. and Sterling. After retirement
Mr. Duckett and his wife started a business in Clarksville in 1990 called "The Little Retreat." After 10 years there, they retired to Kill Devil Hills.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Pattie Duckett of Salem, Debi Duckett of South Boston and Kristi Mueller and her husband, Erich, of Ridgeland, Ms; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother, Eva Jenkins Talent; his father, Gerald Duckett; and two sisters, Barbara Joan Foster and Marilyn Duckett.

Visitation will begin 30 minutes prior to the service. Following the services, family and friends will gather in Mr. Duckett's home.

Clara Lacks Duffer

Clara Lacks Duffer, 87, of Red Oak died January 6, 2004.

Surviving are three sons, John R. Duffer, Dr. Randy Duffer and Joe Duffer; one brother, Carlton Lacks; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rufus J. Duffer.

Mrs. Duffer was a member of Wylliesburg Baptist Church and instrumental in the establishment of the Wylliesburg Branch of the Charlotte County Library.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow, January 10 at Wylliesburg Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Browning Funeral Home in Keysville from 7:00 until 8:30 this evening.

Memorials may be made to Wylliesburg Library.

Paul Clifton Duffer

Paul Clifton Duffer, age 68, of 1032 Hite Lane, South Boston, died Sunday, January 25, 2004, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Duffer was born February 9, 1935, and was the son of the late Sam Peter Duffer and Gracie Duffey Duffer.

He was married to Virginia Christine Wilson Duffer.

A member of Revelation Baptist Church, Mr. Duffer was retired from J.P. Stevens.

Preceding him in death were two brothers, Clarence Duffer and Willie Duffer, and one sister, Ruby Wallace.

Paul Clifton Duffer is survived by his wife; one son, Jimmy Michael Duffer of South Boston; one brother, Sam Louis Duffer of South Boston; and one sister, Audrey McCormick of South Boston.

Funeral services for Paul Clifton Duffer will be Wednesday, January 28, at 2 p.m., at Revelation Baptist Church, with the Rev. Rudolph Jacobs conducting the service.

Interment will be at Halifax Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends Tuesday at Brooks Funeral Home, between 7 and 8:30 p.m., and other times at the home, 1032 Hite Lane, South Boston.

Emma Dorothy Jones Dunkley

Emma Dorothy Jones Dunkley, 85, of 2216 Crystal Hill Road, Crystal Hill died February 16, 2004 at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Mrs. Dunkley was born in Halifax County on August 2, 1918, the daughter of the late Johnny Jones and Mary Wright Jones, and was married to the late Stafford Jones. She was a member of Sunflower Baptist Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Thelma Dunkley; two sons, Harry Jones of New York, N.Y. and Junior Jones of Alexandria; one sister, Rhodie Granger of Crystal Hill; and one brother, John Will Jones of Crystal Hill.

Funeral services for Mrs. Dunkley will be held today, February 20 at 2:30 p.m. at Sunflower Baptist Church, with burial to follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the home.
