Louise Williams Dunkley
Louise Williams Dunkley, 82, of Clays Mill Road, Crystal Hill died January 27, 2004 at The Woodview Nursing Home.
Mrs. Dunkley was born in Halifax County on March 7, 1921, the daughter of the late Louis Williams and Mary Susan Perkins Williams and was married to the late Joseph Elvin Dunkley. She was a member of The Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses.
Survivors include one daughter, Mary E. Clark of Washington, D.C.; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Mrs. Dunkley was preceded in death by two sons, Owen Elvin Dunkley and Richard Edward Dunkley.
A memorial service will be held February 2 at 11 a.m. at The Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses.
Marguerite Riddle Dunkley
Marguerite Riddle Dunkley, 73, of 913 Randolph Avenue, South Boston died January 14, 2004 at her home.
Mrs. Dunkley was born in Richmond on November 23, 1930, the daughter of the late Robert P. Riddle and Sallie Blanks Riddle and was married to Howard Leslie Dunkley. She was a member of First Baptist Church where she was a deacon, Sunday school teacher, worked with the audio-visual library and was a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Survivors include her husband; one grandson, Robert Sterling Seamster and wife, Michelle McIntyre Seamster, of Charlotte, N.C.; one granddaughter, Tamara Seamster Smith and husband, Michael Shane Smith, of Florence, S.C.; one brother, Rudolph Tillman Riddle and wife, Betty, of Richmond; four great-grandchildren, Tanner Sterling Seamster and Lakyn Kennedy Seamster, both of Charlotte, Madison Taylor Smith and Morgan Brooke Smith, both of Florence; one sister-in-law, Ellie Rickman and husband, William; two brothers-in-law, Buster Dunkley and wife, Dot, and Raleigh Dunkley.
Mrs. Dunkley was preceded in death by one daughter, Peggy Leigh Dunkley Seamster; a sister, Marjorie Elizabeth Davis; and one brother, Nathaniel Riddle.
Funeral services will be held today, January 16 at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Tim Cannon officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery.
Wingate Currin "Winkie" Eakes
South Boston Postmaster Wingate Currin "Winkie" Eakes died Saturday, January 3, 2004.
He was 56 years old.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 3 p.m. at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Tim Cannon and the Rev. Tommy Robertson conducting the service. Burial will follow at the Oak Ridge Cemetery.
Mr. Eakes served as postmaster in South Boston the last three years, and had worked with the U.S. Postal Service since 1978.
He was a member of First Baptist Church and served in the U.S. Navy.
Mr. Eakes also coached his children in baseball and softball throughout his life, and most recently coached both a Pontails and Debs team with Dixie Softball.
He also participated in the Old Timer's Baseball League and the Monday Night Bowling League.
Mr. Eakes was a member of the American Legion and the Lion's Club.
He was born in Person County, North Carolina, on February 24, 1947, a son of Olan Day Eakes and Ellen Todd Eakes.
Mr. Eakes is survived by his mother, Ellen Todd Eakes of South Boston, one daughter, Sarah Jennings Eakes of Centreville, one son, Todd Wingate Eakes of Halifax, two brothers, Harvey Leonard Eakes and wife Pamela Morris Eakes of South Boston, and Gordon Olan Eakes of South Boston, and three nieces, Bridgett Eakes, Laura Eakes and Anne Harvey Eakes, all of South Boston.
The family will receive friends at Powell Funeral Home on Monday, January 5, from 7-9 p.m. and at other times at the home of his mother, 1014 Grove Ave., South Boston.

Mark Rhodes Eberly
Mark Rhodes Eberly, 80, of Mount Crawford died April 5, 2004 at his home.
Mr. Eberly was born April 22, 1923, in Orrville, Ohio, a son of the late Amos and Ava Rohrer Eberly, and was married to the late Frances O. Burkholder Eberly. He was a member of Dayton Mennonite Church, was active in the Mennonite Disaster Service, Mennonite Church Cemetery committee, and the Mennonite Relief Sale. He was a retired farmer and carpenter.
Survivors include one son, Dwight O. Eberly of Mount Crawford; two daughters, Doris E. Greider of South Boston and Diane M. Eberly of Broadway; one brother, Edwin W. Eberly of Harrisonburg; one sister, Mary Shank of Bridgewater; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A funeral service for Mr. Eberly will be held at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow, April 8 in Dayton Mennonite Church with the Revs. Willard Heatwole and Nate Yoder officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

James Otha Edmonds
James Otha Edmonds, 45, of Bridgeport, Conn., and former resident of South Boston, died Thursday, February 12, 2004, in Branford, Conn.
Mr. Edmonds was born in Bridgeport, Conn., on August 18, 1958, the son of the late Henry H. Edmonds and Beatrice Hargrove Edmonds.
He was a former employee of Mason C. Day Construction Company.
Mr. Edmonds is survived by two daughters, Doeava Barrett and Precious Barrett, both of Bridgeport, Conn., two sons, James O. Barrett of Bridgeport and Damien Watson of North Carolina, six sisters Dorothy E. Younger, Annie R. Crawley and Beatrice O. Tyner, all of Bridgeport, Conn., Hallie M. Sparks of South Boston, Hazel E. Edmonds of Hamden, Conn., and Carolyn L. Jackson of Rochester, N.Y., ten brothers, Nathaniel Edmonds of Chatham, Henry L. Edmonds, Preston W. Edmonds, Joseph H. Edmonds and Willie L. Womack, all of South Boston, Elijah W. Edmonds, Irving E. Edmonds, Gregory M. Edmonds, Calvin E. Edmonds and Lawrence C. Edmonds, all of Bridgeport, Conn., the mother of his children, Rena Barrett, one son-in-law, Lineo Young, five grandchildren, three aunts, Dorothy White of Vernon Hill, Mildred Bruce of Bridgeport, Conn., and Flossie Edmonds of Brooklyn, N.Y., five sisters-in-law, two brothers-in-law and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, February 17, at 3:30 p.m. with services at Crawford House Chapel in Halifax, Va.
Interment will take place in Christ Temple Blue Rock Pentecostal Church Cemetery in Vernon Hill.

George Wiley Edmonds Sr.
George Wiley Edmonds Sr., 75, of 1240 Crawford Rd., Halifax, died March 21, 2004 at McGuire Veterans Hospital.
Mr. Edmonds was born in North Carolina on July 25, 1928, the son of the late Samuel J. and Linda Bell Hardy Edmonds. He was a member of Banister Hill Baptist Church and was a Army veterans. He was retired from the Mass Transit Authority.
His survivors include his wife: Bessie Mae Terry Edmonds; four daughters: Carolyn Randall and Stephanie Davis of Baltimore, Md., Shelia Austin of Florida and Diane Kinslow of New York; five sons: Ernest Womack, James Womack, George Edmonds Jr., Michael Edmonds and Bryan Edmonds of Baltimore; three sisters: Elizabeth Foster, Jesse Williams and Mary Fowlkes of Baltimore; 15 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held tomorrow, March 25, at 12 noon, at Banister Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. William Carr officiating. Burial will take place in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service and at other times at the home.
Dorothy Edwards
Dorothy Edwards, 79, of Mt. Vernon, N.Y., formerly of Scottsburg, died January 31, 2004 in New York.
Ms. Edwards was born in Bronxville, N.Y. on October 8, 1924, the daughter of the late Willie Edwards and Mamie Edwards. She was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon.
Survivors include two sons, Bruce Edwards of Los Angeles, Calif. and Lawrence Edwards of Raleigh, N.C.; one daughter, Carolyn BenReuben of Mt. Vernon; one adopted daughter, Malika MacCabee of Mt. Vernon; one brother, Arnold Richardson of Scottsburg; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral service for Ms. Edwards will be held tomorrow, February 7 at noon at Spanish Grove Baptist Church with the Revs. Ronald Womack and William Coleman officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the church Saturday.
Elnora Shipp Edwards
Elnora Shipp Edwards, 83, of Halifax, died Saturday, January 17, 2004, at her home
Mrs. Edwards was born in Charlotte County on May 28, 1920, the daughter of the late William M. Shipp and Nannie Hendrick Shipp and was the wife of the late Elbert Preston Edwards.
She was a retired employee of the Craddock-Terry Shoe Corporation.
Mrs. Edwards is survived by one son, Moncie Gibson and wife Christie of Halifax, one daughter, Lois New and husband Larry of Chesterfield, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Dave, John Henry and Robert, and five sisters, Lena, Ida, Mattie, Mary Beulah and Gracie.
Graveside services will be held today, January 19, at 2 p.m. at Halifax Memorial Garden with the Rev. Rodney Barwick officiating.
Harry Byrd Elliott
Harry Byrd Elliott, 75, of 2093 Virgie Cole Road, South Boston died April 8, 2004 at his home.
Mr. Elliott was born in Halifax County on May 31, 1928, the son of Buddy Otha Elliott and Melissa Elliott and was married to Clara Bowen Elliott. He was a member of Hitesburg Baptist Church, was a truck driver for A.E Morris, and was talented with musical instruments.
Survivors include his wife; three stepdaughters, Gail Bowen Puryear and her husband, Grayson, Scottie Bowen Francisco and husband, Bryant, all of South Boston, and Clara Leigh Ambrosia and husband, Joseph, of Stuart, Fla.; one stepson, Ottis Lee Bowen III and wife, Anita, of Nathalie; one sister, Alice Elliott Moore and husband, Richard of Danville; two brothers, James Patrick ‘J.P.’ Elliott of Oxford, N.C., and Briggs O. Elliott of Alexandria; and 10 step-grandchildren.
Other than his parents, Mr. Elliott was preceded in death by a sister, Lucille E. Tuck and a brother, Ralph C. Elliott.
A funeral service was held April 10 at 2 p.m. at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Don Davidson officiating. Burial followed in Halifax Memorial Gardens.

Mary Logan Faulkner
Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Logan Faulkner of South Boston will be held Wednesday, March 17, at 11 a.m. at the Jeters Chapel Baptist Church with burial in the Faulkner Family Cemetery.
The Rev. Samuel Mitchell will officiate.
Mrs. Faulkner, 77, died Saturday, March 13, 2004, at South Boston Manor.
She was born in Halifax County on March 2, 1927, a daughter of the late Bill Logan and Mrs. Nannie Majors Logan. She was married to the late Sanford Lee Faulkner.
Mrs. Faulkner was a member of the Jeters Chapel Baptist Church.
She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Carmetta Faulkner of South Boston, one devoted niece, Mrs. Angela Smith of South Boston, one grandson, Antwan Faulkner of South Boston, two sisters, Mrs. Nannie Lovelace of Halifax and Mrs. Mae Fannie Faulkner of South Boston, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, and a devoted friend, Mrs. Doris Ingram of South Boston.

Juanita ‘May’ Martin Ferrell
Juanita 'May' Martin Ferrell, 49, of 3208 Ball Park Loop, Halifax died February 7, 2004 at her home.
Ms. Ferrell was born in Halifax County on September 3, 1954, the daughter of Clarence Martin and Aline Easley Martin. She was a member of New Zion Baptist Church and was a former employee of JPS Converters, Inc.
Survivors include one daughter, Tiffany Martin of Halifax; one son, Michael J. Ferrell of Halifax; her parents; four sisters, Nyoming Wimbush of Washington, D.C., Jeretta Jones of Clinton, Md., Jearlean Haley of Crystal Hill and Rita Childress of Halifax; and one brother, Richard Royster of Halifax.
A funeral service for Ms. Ferrell will be held tomorrow, February 12 at 11 a.m. at New Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. Willie Yancey officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
After 5 p.m. today, February 11, the remains will lie-in-state at the Crawford House in Halifax, where the family will receive friends from 7 until 8 p.m.
Hannah May Royster-Fountain
Hannah May Royster-Fountain, 90, of Buffalo Junction, died February 12, 2004 at Community Memorial Healthcenter in South Hill.
Mrs. Royster-Fountain was born in Mecklenburg County on April 5, 1913, the daughter of the late Patrick and Georgia Humphrey Royster.
Survivors include her nieces, Dolly J. Royster Hardy, Bertha Ann Royster Small, Mary Magdalene Royster-McCoy, Gladys Irene Royster-Walker, all of Washington, D.C. and Frances Ann Royster-Johnson of Spring Lake, N.C.; nephews, Willie O. Howerton of Boynton Beach, Fla., William Royster Howerton, James Samuel Howerton, and Clyde Daniels, all of Buffalo Junction, Marvin C. Royster of Richmond, Preston M. Royster of Burke, Louis Boulden of Fairfax, James Kinton Royster of New York City, N.Y., and Robert Royster of Durham, N.C.
Mrs. Royster-Fountain was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, Flournoy Royster, Emmanuel Royster, Bessie Royster-Howerton, Carlton H. Royster, James Kinton Royster, Estelle Royster-Boulden and Fannie Bell Royster.

James H. Francis, 62, of Farmville died January 18, 2004.
Mr. Francis was born January 17, 1942, in Nelson County the son of Harmon and Lelia Cash Francis. He was an employee at Weavex Corp.
Survivors include his children, Vickie Francis Wilson of South Boston, James Michael Francis of Halifax and Donna Francis Lewis of Farmville; special friend, Peggy Lawson of Farmville; three sisters, Eleanor Harris and Ruth Jennings, both of Nathalie, and Rebecca Hogan of Halifax; two brothers, Clark Francis of Taylor, Mich. and Kenneth Francis of South Boston; and five grandchildren.

Shymerra Arlene Ford
Infant Shymerra Arlene Ford, age 5 months, died March 5, 2004 at VCU-MCV Health System in Richmond.
She was born in South Boston on September 29, 2003, the daughter of Shamekia Nicole Wyatt and Michael Glen Ford Jr.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by her maternal grandparents, Betty Wyatt and James Owen, both of South Boston; her paternal grandparents, Cloyd Lee and Arlene Lee of Vernon, Conn.; her great-grandmothers, Pauline Palmer, Ella Mae Wyatt and Eliza Owen, all of South Boston; her great-great-grandmother, Nannie Wyatt of South Boston; and her step-grandfather, Timothy Hughes of South Boston.
Funeral services for Infant Ford will be held today, March 10 at 1 p.m. at New Mt. Olive Apostolic Holiness Church with Minister David Hamlett officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
William Elmo Fowler
William Elmo Fowler, 87, of 1140 Hummingbird Lane, Vernon Hill died February 2, 2004 at Meadowview Terrace.
Mr. Fowler was born in Campbell County on May 11, 1916, the son of John L. Fowler and Della Brewer Fowler and was married to the late Lessie Leona Dunn Fowler. He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church and was an Army Air Force Veteran of World War II.
Survivors include three sisters, Ruth Fowler Morris of Swan Quarter, N.C., Margaret Fowler Steffan of Calif., Della Fowler Hazelwood of Gladys; and one brother, John L. Fowler of Orangevale, Calif.
