Clarence Daley Harris
Retired merchant and former South Boston city councilman Clarence Daley Harris, 81, died at his home yesterday morning, April 6, 2004 of congestive heart failure.
A native of Woodsdale, N.C., he was the son of Dr. D.W.C. Harris and Lessie Dean Seamster Harris of Person County, N.C., and the widower of Nora Ella Satterfield Harris.
Mr. Harris spent his entire business career merchandising clothing and dry goods in South Boston. He was briefly an employee of Leggett Department Stores, and at different times held the local franchises for Montgomery Ward and Sears, Roebuck and Company.
He was past president and life member of the South Boston Retail Merchant's Association and was a founding member and past president of the Downtown Development Corporation, later known as Cornerstone.
A World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy, Harris served as a Gunner's Mate in the amphibious force of the Pacific Fleet. He was a lifetime member of American Legion Post 8, V.F.W. Post 842 and the Disabled American Veterans.
Mr. Harris was active in numerous civic and fraternal organizations. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and past member of Masonic Lodge 91, was a Knight Templar and held numerous high positions in Masonic District 37. He was also a member of the South Boston Shrine Club, the Rotary Club, the Order of the Eastern Star and the Sons of Confederate Veterans.
Besides serving on South Boston's town council from 1971 through 1976, he was a Republican member of the Halifax County Electoral Board for 20 years.
Mr. Harris was a long-time member of the First Baptist Church of South Boston, serving as a deacon, president of the Baptist Brotherhood and member of the Lacy Bible Class.
He was commissioned a Kentucky Colonel in 1995 by that state's Governor, Brerston Jones.
He is survived by a son, C.D. Harris, Jr., of Fayetteville, Ga., one brother, J. Nathan Jordan of Palm Bay, Fla., one sister, Elsie Blanning of Richmond, one grandson, Samuel Harris of McDonough, Ga., and a longtime friend and companion, Quillie Clark of South Boston.
The family will receive friends at Powell Funeral Home between 7:00 and 8:30 p.m. tonight.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 8, at First Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery.

Elizabeth Lawter Harris
Elizabeth Lawter Harris, 86, of 103 Merritt Street, South Boston died March 3, 2004 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mrs. Harris was born in Henderson, N.C. on December 5, 1917, the daughter of Oscar Ray Lawter and Lena Newby Lawter, and was married to the late Henry Thomas Harris. she was a member of Second Baptist Church, and retired from Halifax Cotton Mill.
Survivors include two daughters, Faye Anderson and husband, Larry, of South Boston, and Harriett Johnston and husband, Lou, of St. Cloud, Fla.; one brother, George Lawter of South Boston; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A funeral service for Mrs. Harris will be held at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel tomorrow, March 6 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Horace Murray officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery.
The family will receive friends this evening between 7:00 and 8:30 at Brooks Funeral Home, and other times at the home of Faye and Larry Anderson, 103 Merritt Street.

John Henry Harris
John Henry Harris, 49, of 6105 Philpott Road, South Boston died February 17, 2004 at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Mr. Harris was born in Halifax County on November 7, 1954, the son of the late George Harris and Thelma Richardson Harris, and was married to Sharon Daye Harris. He was a member of Cross Roads Baptist Church, a former employee of O'Sullivan Furniture Co., and was a Navy and Army Veteran.
Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Sonya, of Durham, N.C.; two sons, John, of Washington, D.C. and Kelly, of South Boston; one stepdaughter, Bellgena of Orange Park, Fla.; five sisters and four brothers.
Funeral services for Mr. Harris will be held today, February 20 at 5:30 p.m. at the Chapel of Jeffress Funeral Home with the Revs. Harvey Bigelow and Elton Medley officiating. Burial will take place on Saturday at Cross Roads Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family is receiving friends at the home.
Charles David Harvey
Charles 'Chuck' David Harvey, 59, of Lynchburg, died March 1, 2004. He was the husband of Chris Harvey for 16 years.
Mr. Harvey was born September 29, 1944, in Seattle, Wash., a son of Ed Willoughby and the late Ernestine Davidson Willoughby. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. He was retired from Babcock & Wilcox where he worked in Quality Control, and also worked as a radio announcer in the Central Virginia area. He was a member of Living Word Baptist Church, Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter #196, Disabled American Veterans Chapter #8, and was a volunteer with Centra Health Auxiliary Services.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons, Gregory Paul Harvey and Jeffrey Nolan Burns, both of Lynchburg, and Brian David Harvey of Rustburg; a daughter, Suzanne Burns Johnson of Appomattox; one brother, John Ed Willoughby Jr. of Columbia, Tenn.; and seven grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m., Thursday, March 4, at Tharp Funeral Home.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m., Friday, March 5, at Tharp Funeral Home with Pastor Marvin Suitt officiating. Burial will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park. Military honors will be provided by American Legion Post #16.

Minnie Lee Young Hatchett
A funeral service for Minnie Lee Young Hatchett, 85, of Danville, formerly of Tennessee, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 31, 2004 at Doak-Howell Funeral Home in Shelbyville, Tenn. with Brother Reggie Smith officiating.
Burial will follow in the Hazel Cemetery in Bell Buckle, Tenn.
Mrs. Hatchett died January 26 at Danville Medical Center in Danville.
She was the daughter of the late Martin Luther and Fannie Elizabeth Pucket Young and was married to the late Kennerd Hall Hatchett.
Mrs. Hatchett was a member of Bell Buckle Baptist Church and later Shelbyville Mills Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, Larry Dale Hatchett of Danville; three grandchildren, Deborah Hatchett Sager of Lascassas, Tenn., Randy Steven Hatchett of Murfreesboro, Tenn. and Lisa Michele Beck of Dry Fork; four great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Johneda Trail Hatchett.
Bertha Alease Carver Hayes
Bertha Alease Carver Hayes, 76, of 2085 Philpott Road, South Boston died March 3, 2004 at The Woodview.
Mrs. Hayes was born in Halifax County on September 26, 1927, the daughter of Willie D. Carver and Ellen Eva Ragan Carver and was married to the late Raymond J. Hayes. She was a member of Seven Oaks Baptist Church.
A funeral service will be held at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel tomorrow, March 6 at 3 p.m. with the Revs. Raymond Bucklew and Jack Stewart officiating. Burial will follow in Berry Hill Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
Survivors of Mrs. Hayes include two sons, Roger G. Sizemore and Danny T. Sizemore, both of South Boston; three sisters, Rosetta C. Oldham of Goldsboro, N.C., Dora Lee C. Ambrose of Halifax, and Josephine C. Blanks of South Boston; two granddaughters, Merry Lynn Styles and Brandy Nicole Sizemore; one grandson, Jason Thomas Sizemore; four great-grandchildren; and a special family member, William 'Bill' Daniel of Alton.
Willie Jeff ‘Hogeye’ Henderson, Jr.
Long-time South Boston businessman and civic leader Willie Jeff "Hogeye" Henderson Jr., 79, of South Boston, died Friday, January 16, 2004, at The Woodview.
Mr. Henderson was born in Halifax County on November 24, 1924, the son of the late Willie Jeff Henderson Sr. and Lillie Barker Henderson, and was married to Norma Y. Henderson.
Mr. Henderson opened the Bridgeview Exxon facility in 1950.
The business continues today under the direction of his son Willie Jeff Henderson III, while his grandson, Jay Charles Henderson runs Bridgeview Express in Halifax.
Mr. Henderson was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of South Boston.
He was also a member of the Woodmen of the World, a lifetime member and past president of the South Boston Jaycees, and a past member of the South Boston Lions Club.
He was an avid golfer.
Mr. Henderson is survived by his wife, one son, Willie Jeff Henderson III and wife Janet of Crystal Hill, one grandson, Jay Charles Henderson of Crystal Hill, and one granddaughter, Joni Grey Henderson.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Marie Henderson Crowder.
Funeral services were held yesterday, January 18, at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Russell Lee and Dr. Michael Parnell officiating.
Burial followed in Halifax Memorial Gardens.

Odell Payne Herndon
Funeral services for Mrs. Odell Payne Herndon will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, January 20, 2004, at the Chapel of Jeffress Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Brookneal.
The Rev. Jesse Waller will officiate.
Burial will follow in the Second Buffalo Baptist Church Cemetery in Nathalie.
Mrs. Herndon, of Nathalie, died Friday, January 16, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
She was 86.
Mrs. Herndon was born on July 27, 1917, the daughter of the late Fitzchutt Payne and Sylvia Payne.
She was married to the late Johnny Herndon.
Survivors include three sons, Albert Lee Herndon of Chatham, Frank Herndon Jr. and Sherman Herndon of the residence, six grandchildren, Brenda Logan, Betty Herndon, Patricia Jackson, Zelma Medley, George Herndon, Clarence Herndon and wife Gladys, 12 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, one sister, Evelyn "Nettie" Hubbard of Hurt, Va., one daughter-in-law, Nannie Bell Herndon of South Boston, and three devoted friends, Betty Ann Waller, Mary L. David and Hildred Lawson, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Bertie Ruth Hite
Bertie Ruth Hite 70, of Clarksville died February 6, 2004 in Chippenham Hospital in Richmond.
Mrs. Hite was a native of Alabama, but had lived most of her life in Clarksville where she retired from Burlington Industries.
A funeral service was held February 10 at 2 p.m. in the Watkins Cooper Lyon Chapel in Clarksville. Burial followed in Concord Baptist Church Cemetery, Chase City.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Henry Gayle of Virgilina; two sons, Ricky D. White of Roxboro, N.C. and Lindsey H. White of Chesapeake; two sisters, Gwen Carter of Colonial Heights and Bobbi Coursey of Walnut Grove, Ala.; one brother, Dan Gilliland of Petersburg; four grandchildren, Crystal Ward, Chris White, Autumn White and Lindsey White III; and five great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Hite was preceded in death by children, Ronnie and Betty White; and one granddaughter, Michelle Puryear.
Joseph Kilby Hite
Joseph Kilby Hite, 80, of Bassett died January 21, 2004 at Memorial Hospital Martinsville/HC.
Mr. Hite was born in Virgilina the son of the late John Spencer Hite and Mary Harrell Hite and was married to Doris R. Hite.
He was a U.S. Army Veteran having served in the African Campaign during WWII; owned and operated Hite Tile and Marble Company of Collinsville; was a member of the Collinsville Lions Club; a member of the Bassett Kiwanis Club; a Boy Scout leader; a member of the Martinsville Cotillion Club; was a member of Pocahontas Bassett Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher, representative to the Henry County Missions; and was active in the Republican party.
Survivors of Mr. Hite include his wife; one daughter, Deborah Jo Hite of Bassett; two sons, John Vincent Hite and wife, Mary Kent, of Denison, Texas, and Richard Ross Hite of Fairfax; three brothers, John H. Hite of Aarons Creek, Page L. Hite of Florence, S.C. and G. Tilman Hite of Buffalo Junction; and his caregiver, Brenda Turner.
A funeral service will be held tomorrow, January 24 at 2 p.m. at Pocahontas Bassett Baptist Church in Bassett. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service and other times at the home. Burial will follow at Roselawn Burial Park, Martinsville.

Col. Hugh Carter Holt Jr.
Col. Hugh Carter Holt Jr. (U.S. Army, Ret.), 77, of Halifax and Orange died January 25, 2004.
Col. Holt was preceded in death by his first wife, Ann Reeves Holt, and is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Moore Holt of Orange; four children, Elizabeth Holt Harris and husband, Douglas, of Hollywood, Md., Laura Holt Diaz and husband, Richard, of Petaluma, Calif., Carter Holt of Los Angeles, Calif., John Holt and wife, Linda, of Nevada City, Calif.; two grandsons, Daniel Holt of Nevada City and Alex Harris of Hollywood.
Col. Holt was born in Scottsburg in 1926. He graduated from West Point in 1950; served in Korea and Vietnam and received medals including the Legion of Merit. He retired in 1980 and moved to Halifax where he served as Town Manager. He was a member of Beth Car Baptist Church, the Retired Officer's Association and Dun Roamin'.
A funeral service will be held at Beth Car Baptist Church today, January 30, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Michael Parnell officiating. Burial will take place in Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors.

Berniece Booher Hoskins
Berniece Booher Hoskins, 86, of 7109 Oak Level Road, Halifax died February 26, 2004 at Berry Hill Nursing Home.
Mrs. Hoskins was born in Danville on March 11, 1917, the daughter of Frederick Booher and Renie Hamm Booher, and was married to Howard Steven Hoskins. She was a member of Oak Level Presbyterian Church where she was also a member of the Annie H. Henderson Circle.
Survivors include her husband; one daughter, Joyce Faye Walk and husband, Larry, of Williamsburg; two sons, Steve D. Hoskins Sr. and wife, Elaine, of Halifax, and Randy E. Hoskins and wife, Susan, of Halifax; six grandchildren, Rhonda Hoskins and Steven Hoskins Jr., both of South Boston, Melanie and Miriam Hoskins, both of Halifax, Mary-Lyons Hanks and Larry Walk Jr., both of Williamsburg; five great-grandchildren; and one sister, Maggie Cooper of Danville. Mrs. Hoskins was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers.
Funeral services were held February 29 at 2 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. David Kilpatrick officiating. Burial took place in Oak Level Presbyterian Church cemetery.
Mamie Bass Hunt
Mamie Bass Hunt, 90, of Nathalie died March 16, 2004 at Chippenham Hospital in Richmond.
Mrs. Hunt was the daughter of Raleigh Chilton Bass and Etha Elliott Bass and was married to Nathan Harold Hunt. She was a member of Hunting Creek Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Mamie Lee Williams and her husband, Vernon, of Richmond, and Frances Hunt Williams of Richmond; one sister, Josephine Bowman of Sebring, Fla.; three grandchildren, Keith Williams, Kenneth Williams and Brenda Inge, all of Richmond; three great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for Mrs. Hunt will be held today, March 19 at 2 p.m. at Hunting Creek Baptist Church with the Revs. Kenneth Williams and Tony Sisk officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
