Charlie Edward Lipford

Deacon Charlie Edward Lipford, 73, of Leda Road, Nathalie died February 18, 2004 at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Deacon Lipford was born in Halifax County on February 27, 1930, the son of the late Samuel Lipford and Gracie Coles Lipford and was married to Irene White Lipford. He was a member of County Line Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Vivian A. Lipford of Washington, D.C. and Angela L. Mosley of Virginia Beach; one son, Charlie E. Lipford Jr. of Roxboro, N.C.; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; four brothers, Willie Lipford of Philadelphia, Pa., Raleigh Lipford and Ernest Lipford, both of Washington, D.C., and Johnnie Lipford of Baltimore, Md.; three sisters, Arlean Stone of Nathalie, Elizabeth Lipford of Brooklyn, N.Y. and Virginia Dixon of Columbus, Ga.

A funeral service for Deacon Lipford will be held today, February 23 at County Line Baptist Church with the Rev. Otis R. Dillard officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Robert Arthur Lloyd Jr.

Robert Arthur Lloyd Jr., 67, of 1054 First Street, South Boston died February 2, 2004 at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Mr. Lloyd was born in Halifax County on December 16, 1936, the son of the ate Annie Bell Elliott Lloyd and Robert Arthur Lloyd and was married to Deborah Green Lloyd. He attended Trinity Holiness Church, was a lineman with Reliable Communications, and served in the Air Force.

A memorial service will be held at Trinity Holiness Church tomorrow, February 5 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Grant Dyer officiating.

Survivors of Mr. Lloyd include his wife; one son, Jason Scott Lloyd and wife, Kelly, of South Boston; two daughters, Sundy Conner of Napa Valley, Calif. and Tara Lloyd of Vali Jo, Calif; two sisters, Doris L. High and husband, Rick, of Ringgold and Dorothy L. Vicent of Jacksonville, Fla; one brother, Billy N. Lloyd and wife, Erlene, of Concord, N.C.; and one grandson, Collin Scott Lloyd.

The family will receive friends at the church this evening, February 4, between 7:00 and 8:30, and other times at the home of Jason and Kelly Lloyd.

Those wishing to give memorials are asked to consider Trinity Holiness Church, Huell Matthews Highway, South Boston.

Billy Edward Logan

Billy Edward Logan, 52, of 181 Beulah Rd., Nathalie, died March 23, 2004 at Lynchburg General Hospital.

Mr. Logan was born in Halifax County on May 3, 1951, the son of the late Hiwatha and Bernice Logan. He was married to the late Linda Gale Womack Logan and was a member of New Zion Baptist Church.

His survivors include two sons: Rodney E. and Nathaniel L. Logan of Nathalie; four brothers: Eugene and Ralph Logan of Nathalie and Vincent and Ronald Logan of Maryland; daughter-in-law, Tomecia Logan. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Hampton and Nathaniel Logan.

A funeral service will be held tomorrow, March 27, at 3 p.m., at New Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. Willie Yancey officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the home of Rodney Logan, 2051 State Shed Rd., Nathalie.

Felicia Logan

Felicia Logan of Bronx, N.Y, formerly of Halifax County, died January 12, 2004 at Montefiore Medical Center.

She was the daughter of the late Arthur and Janie Ewell Logan.

Funeral services for Ms. Logan will be Sunday, January 18 at 3 p.m. at Millstone Baptist Church with the Rev. Chester Spruill officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 6-7 p.m. at Dunn and Sons Funeral Home in Halifax, and other times at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Adolphus Logan, 6205 L.P. Bailey Highway.

Hattie Lowery Long

Hattie Lowery Long, 89, of Forest, died Friday, January 2, 2004, at Lynchburg General Hospital.

She was born in Alton in May 15, 1914, the daughter of the late Walter Green Lowery and the late Maggie Lee Ford Lowery and was the widow of the late Melvin Henry Long.

Mrs. Long was a member of Harmony Methodist Church of Alton and formerly worked for K-Mart in it's grocery store before her retirement.

She is survived by two sons, Howard G. Long of Forest and M.B. "Bill" Long of Lynchburg, one daughter, Gladys Long Faulconer and husband Howard Faulconer, Jr. of Forest, one sister, Rebecca Claiborne of Alton, one brother, George Lowery and wife Jeanita of Chester, two grandchildren, Zane P. Finley of Forest and Howard L. Faulconer, III and wife Doris Teresa of Cary, N.C. one great-grandson, Zachary M. Coffey of Forest, and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Long was preceded in death by five brothers, Richard, Clarence and Bryant Lowery, all of South Boston, and Joe and John Lowery of Petersburg, and four sisters, Willie Claiborne and Ella Morris of Alton, Laura Wood and Mary Kincaid of Oxford, N.C.

Funeral services will be held today, January 5, at 3 p.m. at Whitten Timberlake Chapel with Dr. Maurice T. McCarthy of Beulah Baptist Church officiating.

Burial will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park.

Lawrence William Lovelace

Lawrence William Lovelace, 52, of 520 Berry Hill Road, South Boston died March 11, 2004 at Lynchburg General Hospital.

Mr. Lovelace was born in Halifax County on June 28, 1951, the son of James Hill and the late Mary Alice Lovelace. He was also the stepson of the late Lee Cook and was married to Georgia Paniel Lovelace. He was a member of Millstone Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Lakesha Lovelace of Halifax, Tamecia Medley of South Boston and Gwen Cunningham of Augusta, Ga.; his father of Philadelphia, Pa.; three sisters, Alender Wilson, Hazel Bynum and Alice Cook, all of South Boston; three brothers, Ronald Guy of Nathalie, Ricky Cook and Alex Cook, both of South Boston; and six grandchildren.

A funeral service for Mr. Lovelace will be held today, March 17 at 2 p.m. at Millstone Baptist Church with the Rev. Chester Spruill officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

George Commelious ‘G.C.’ Lowery

George Commelious "G.C." Lowery, 74, of Virgilina, died Sunday, January 4, 2004, at Halifax Regional Hospital.

He was born in Halifax County on July 18, 1929 the son of the late Jessie Henry Lowery and the late Hallie Rebecca Lowery and was married to Marguerite S. Lowery.

Mr. Lowery was a member of Florence Avenue Baptist Church and was the retired owner operator of M&G Supplies.

He is survived by his wife, one son, Michael Allen Lowery of Norfolk, one sister, Marie Lowery Dalton of Oxford, N.C., and four brothers, Henry Ford Lowery of South Boston, Edward Jones Lowery of Newport News, Franklin Wilson "Bill" Lowery of Hampton and Lester Leroy "Roy" Lowery, Sr. of Virgilinia.

Mr. Lowery was preceded in death by two sisters, Gladys Lowery Swain and Rebecca Lowery Currin, and two brothers, James Howard Lowery and John D. Lowery.

Funeral services will be held at Florence Avenue Baptist Church on Tuesday, January 6, 2004, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Sean McKenzie officiating.
Burial will take place at Virgilinia Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Books Funeral Home today, January 5, between 7:00 and 8:30 p.m. and at other times at the home, 8022 Florence Avenue, Virgilina.

Nellie Hicks Mabe

Nellie Hicks Mabe, 96, formerly of Ringgold, died February 21, 2004 at Danville Regional Medical center.

Mrs. Mabe was born April 11, 1907, in Stokes County to the late Luther Hicks and the late Nannie Stephens Hicks, and was married to the late Bill Mabe. She was a member of Shermont Baptist Church.

Survivors include three daughters, Shirley Bell and husband, Jerry, of Lenoir, N.C., Jane Trent of Anderson, S.C. and Lilla Mae Greenwood of Reidsville, N.C.; three sons, Watson Mabe and wife, Pat, of Ringgold, Ted Mabe and wife, Janice, of Reidsville, and Paul Mabe and wife, Barbara, of Alton; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Graveside services for Mrs. Mabe were held February 23 at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Jimmy Cain officiating.

Stacey Smedley Majors

Stacey Smedley Majors, 60, of 119 Jackson Street, Halifax died March 7, 2004 at her home.

Mrs. Majors was born in Kimball, W.Va. on April 29, 1943, the daughter of the late Booker T. Smedley and Ruth Shelton Smedley and was married to the late Artie Benjamin Majors. She was a member of St. Paul CME Church.
Survivors include two sons, Timothy Smedley of Port Jervis, N.Y. and Warren Harris Sr. of Bloomingburg, N.Y.; one sister, Alice Clark of Charlotte, N.C.; five grandchildren; one daughter-in-law, Bessie Smedley. Mrs. Majors was preceded in death by one brother, Ronald Smedley.

Funeral services will be held tomorrow, March 11 at 11 a.m. at Crawford House Chapel in Halifax. The remains will lie-in-state at the Crawford House today, March 10, from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m.

The family is receiving friends at the home.

Joseph Marable

Joseph Marable, 88, of 101 Hedgerow Drive, Halifax died April 3, 2004 at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Mr. Marable was born March 18, 1916, in Halifax County a son of the late Pleasant Marable and the late Sallie Lou Marable and was married to Mary Fannie Harris Marable, who preceded him in death. Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a custodian with J.P. Stevens, and he was a member of
New Arbor Baptist Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Joan Johnson of the home; one son, Joseph M. Marable of South Boston; and his close friend, Donna Carr.

A funeral service for Mr. Marable will be held April 9 at 1 p.m. at New Arbor Baptist Church with the Rev. Nelson Stamps officiating. Burial with military rites by American Legion Post 29 will follow in the church cemetery.

A viewing will be held April 8 from 2 until 8 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Ferry Street. The family will receive friends at the home.

Bernice Hankins Marrow

Bernice Hankins Marrow, 85, of 10030 Chatham Road, Vernon Hill died March 14, 2004 at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Mrs. Marrow was born in Halifax County on January 14, 1919, the daughter of Rev. Sydney Hankins and Addie Logan Hankins and was married to Theodore Marrow. She was a member of Emmanuel Seventh Day Adventist Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Elizabeth Freda Thornton of Melrose Park, Pa.; three sons, Theodore Marrow of Halifax, Kenneth Marrow of Staten Island, N.Y. and Dexter Marrow of Washington, D.C.; 12 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. Mrs. Marrow was preceded in death by one son, Edward Marrow.

Funeral services will be held March 21 at 2 p.m. at Emmanuel Seventh Day Adventist Church with Dr. Andre Saunders officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the Chapel of Jeffress Funeral Home Saturday evening, March 20 from 6:30 to 8:00.

Harvey Laymon Matthews

Harvey Laymon Matthews, 97, of Danville died March 8, 2004.

Mr. Matthews was born in Ashland, W.Va. to Thomas David and Lillie Carter Matthews in 1906. He was married 67 years to Nancy Ethel Philpott.

Mr. Matthews retired from Dan River Mills in 1972 after 40 years of service. He was a member of Keen Street Baptist Church, a member of the Masonic Order and the Red Man Society.

Survivors include one daughter, Betty M. Scott and husband, Andrew, of Longview, Texas; three sons, Wiley R. Matthews and wife, Beverly, of Danville, John Harvey Matthews and wife, Sylvia, of Hot Springs, Ark. and Jimmy David Matthews and wife, Sandy, of Jacksonville, Fla.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Mr. Matthews was preceded in death by 12 brothers and sisters.

The funeral will be conducted today, March 12 at 2:00 p.m. from the Chapel of Barker Funeral Home by the Rev. Freddie Vicks. Burial will be in Highland Burial Park.

Linda Whitten McAdams

Linda Whitten McAdams, 63, formerly of South Boston, died January 5, 2004 at Hendrick’s Medical Center in Abilene, Texas.

Ms. McAdams was the daughter of the late Louise Whitten of South Boston and the late Roy Lawson Whitten and the granddaughter of the late Roy and Dora Doss of South Boston.

Survivors include her daughter, Angela L. McAdams of Abilene; her son and daughter-in-law, Joe D. McAdams Jr. and Laura Mosby, of Newport News; three brothers, Larry Whitten and wife, Mary Ann, of Abilene, Richard Whitten and wife, Gail, of South Boston, and Kenny Rock and wife, Michelle, of Kure Beach, N.C.; four grandchildren, Christopher Avery, Alyssa McAdams, Jessica Gillenwater, and Addison Weddle.

A memorial service will be held in the spring in South Boston.

Memorials can be made in her honor to The American Cancer Society.

Patricia Boxley McIvor

Patricia Boxley McIvor, 54, 1156 Coles Ferry Road, Nathalie died January 31, 2004 at her home.

Mrs. McIvor was born in Halifax County on September 6, 1949, the daughter of the late Willie Boxley and Daisy Smith Boxley and was married to Clinton McIvor. She was a member of The Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, and was a former employee of Halifax County Public Schools.

Survivors of Mrs. McIvor include her husband; one daughter, Renetta Brown of Halifax; one son, Quincy McIvor of South Boston; six grandchildren; and two sisters, Shirley Jones and Yvonne Boxley, both of South Boston.

A memorial service will be held Friday, February 6 at 1 p.m. at The Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses with Bro. Norman Williams officiating.

The family is receiving friends at the home.

Gene Autry McKinney

Gene Autry McKinney, 67, of South Boston, died Friday, January 16, 2004, at Halifax Regional Hospital.

He was born in Halifax County on June 2, 1936, the son of the late Cowboy McKinney and Mazzie Conner McKinney and was married to Sue Martin McKinney.

He was a veteran of the United States Army and was a truck driver with Roxboro-based Fleig Leasing.

Mr. McKinney is survived by his wife, two step-daughters, Debra Ferguson and husband Van of Halifax and Susan Hall and husband Wesley of South Boston, two granddaughters, Connie F. Wynn and Christy Hall, one grandson, Matthew Hall, and four great-grandchildren, Dylan Wynn, J.B. Wynn, Brian Wynn and Harrison Wynn.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Betty Trent, one half-brother, Dickie Conner, one grandson, Justin Lee Hall, and one granddaughter, Katie Lynn Ferguson.

Funeral services were held Sunday, January 18, at Brooks Funeral Home with the Rev. Dan Ward officiating.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials to Halifax County Cancer Association, P.O. Box 875, South Boston, Va. 24592 or the Halifax Regional Hospital Hospice, 2204 Wilborn Avenue, South Boston, Va. 24592.
