Bertha Robinson Medley

Bertha Robinson Medley, 93, of Lynchburg, formerly of Halifax County, died April 7, 2004 in Lynchburg General Hospital.

Mrs. Medley was born in Halifax County on July 25, 1910, the daughter of the late Charlie Robinson and Mary Logan Robinson and was married to the late Melvin Medley. She was a member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church, Nathalie.

Survivors include a son, Walter Parrish of New York, N.Y.; one foster son, Tyke Lamont Farrow of Lynchburg; one sister, Viola Cheatham of Lynchburg; two grandsons, Lamont Farrow of Lynchburg and Tyree Farrow of South Boston.

Mrs. Medley was also preceded in death by seven sisters, Hennie Robinson, Rennie Pringle, Maude Cage, Florence Pringle, Bessie Bradley and Elsie Howard; and two brothers, William and Lewis Robinson.

A funeral service will be held tomorrow, April 10 at 1 p.m. at Hickory Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Alfred Dean officiating. Burial will follow in the Robinson Family Cemetery.

Ernest 'Sonny' Medley

Ernest 'Sonny' Medley, 81, of 331 Logan Street, South Boston died January 28, 2004 at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Mr. Medley was born in Halifax County on June 3, 1922, the son of the late Ernest E. Medley and Margaret Crews Medley. He was married to the late Rebecca Penick Medley and was a member of Banister Hill CME Church.

Survivors include one son, Ernest P. Medley of South Boston; other relatives and friends. Mr. Medley was preceded in death by two daughters, Elizabeth Ann Medley and Winifred Charletha Medley.

A funeral service will be held February 1 at 2 p.m. at Banister Hill CME Church with the Rev. Betty Boston officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will be receiving friends at the home.

Alvin Theron Meeks

Alvin Theron Meeks, age 93, of Covington died February 2, 2004 at the Brian Center Nursing Care. He was the husband of the late 'Johnnie' Johnson Meeks.

Mr. Meeks was born August 2, 1910, a son of the late Thomas Edwin and Lelia Cassie Londeree Meeks. He was a member of Covington Baptist Church, was a member of Covington Lodge #618 L.O.O.M., and was a retiree of Westvaco.

Survivors include two sons, A.T. Meeks Jr. and wife, Jackie, of South Boston and Charles B. Meeks of Covington; one daughter, Shellie Manspeaker and husband, George, of Williamsburg; one brother, Francis Meeks and wife, Edna, of Falls Church; two sisters, Winifred Hicks and Nancy Hubbard, both of Covington; seven grandchildren, Greg Meeks, David Meeks, both of South Boston, Kevin Meeks of Buena Vista, Andy Meeks of Covington, Lt. Col. Stephen Manspeaker and wife, Trish, of Germany, Robyn Manspeaker of Franklin, Tenn., and Scott Manspeaker of Atlanta, Ga.; and five great-grandchildren.

Mr. Meeks was also preceded in death by three brothers, Mason, Willard and Thomas Meeks.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow, February 5 from the Chapel of Loving Funeral Home in Covington with the Rev. Michael Wright officiating.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Those wishing to give memorials are asked to consider Covington Baptist Church in memory of Mr. Meeks, at 280 W. Riverside Avenue, Covington, 24426.

Steven Edward Milam

Steven Edward Milam, 35, of 200 Leigh Street, South Boston died February 11, 2004.

Mr. Milam was born in Halifax County on November 12, 1968, the son of Woodrow Wilson Milam and Daisy Lee Milam. He was a member of Second Baptist Church and was employed as a machinist at ABB.

Survivors include his parents, his wife, Anita R. Milam; one daughter, Lauren Hope Milam, all of South Boston; a stepdaughter, Kailey J. Guill of Halifax; one brother, Tony Milam and his wife, Dawn; one sister, Teresa Barnett and her husband, Barry; one uncle, James Kenneth Milam, all of South Boston; four nephews, Josh, Jonathan and Jason Milam and Alex Barnett; and one niece, Anna Barnett.

Funeral services for Mr. Milam will be held February 15 at 2 p.m. at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jason Murray officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Brooks Funeral Home February 14 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and at other times at the home of his father, Woodrow Milam, 204 Cherry Street, South Boston.

David Glines Mooney

David Glines “Red” Mooney, age 88, of South Boston, died March 20, 2004 at The Woodview.

Mr. Mooney was the son of the late Mathias and Emma Glines Mooney. He was a WW II Marine veteran and a retired machinist with Boie Cascade.
His survivors include two daughters: Linda “Peanut” Unroe of Vernon Hill and Betty Downs of Sumner, Maine; brother: Andrew Mooney of Maine; eight grandchildren: Hope Ann Katz, David Downs, Roger Downs II, Wendy Downs, Matthew Downs, David Girous II and Stormy Hobbs. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian Brown Mooney, and a grandson, Brett Girouz.

A memorial service will be held at Powell Funeral Home Chapel today, March 24, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Isaac Mooneyham officiating. Burial will be held at the Veteran’s Cemetery in Augusta, Maine.

Emma Lee Wilkins Moore

Emma Lee Wilkins Moore, 84, of 2010 Grubby Road, Halifax died January 12, 2004 at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Mrs. Moore was born in Halifax County on November 21, 1919, the daughter of the late Grover Cleveland Wilkins and Nannie Lou Harris Wilkins and was married to the late Tommy Louis Moore. She was a member of Union United Methodist Church.

Services will be held at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel tomorrow, January 15 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Ann Davidson officiating. Burial will follow in Union UMC Cemetery.

Survivors of Mrs. Moore include one son, Tommy Lee Moore of Halifax; one sister, Gurdine W. Burleson of Clarksville, Tenn.; one brother, Harris Wilkins of Clarksville, Tenn.; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by one sister, Shirley Mae W. Williamson.

The family will receive friends this evening at Brooks Funeral Home between 7:00 and 8:30.

Helen Keesee Moore

Helen Keesee Moore of 1623 Jeffress Blvd., South Boston died February 25, 2004 at The Woodview.

She was born in Halifax County on August 30, 1924, the daughter of the late William Jasper Keesee and Ellen Gertrude Davis Keesee.

Mrs. Moore was retired as director of the Chastain Home in Halifax, was on the Halifax County School Board for many years and served as chairman of the Halifax County/South Boston School Board. She was also on the Board for the South Boston/Halifax County Museum of Fine Arts and History and was a member of Halifax Baptist Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Diann Moore Castleberry of Richmond; one son, William Cecil 'Bill' Moore of South Boston; one brother and sister-in-law, Roy Keesee and wife, Faye, of Halifax; one granddaughter, Michelle Kennedy of Charlotte, N.C.; two grandsons, Richard Eugene Moore and William Cecil Moore Jr., both of South Boston; and one great-granddaughter, Porter Kennedy of Charlotte.

Funeral services for Mrs. Moore will be held tomorrow, February 28 at 3 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. John Campbell officiating. Burial will follow in Halifax Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Powell Funeral Home this evening, February 27 from 7:00 until 8:30, and other times at the home of her son, Bill Moore, 307 Yates Street, South Boston.

Jennie Baker Crenshaw Moore

Jennie Baker Crenshaw Moore, 87, of Clarksville died January 21, 2004 at Meadowview Terrace.

Mrs. Moore was born in Halifax County on May 22, 1916, the daughter of Shelton 'John' Crenshaw and Sallie Moorefield Crenshaw and was married to Edward Bryant Moore. She was a member of Pleasant Grove United Church of Christ.

Survivors include two daughters, Linda Moore and husband, Harold, of Clarksville, and June Chaney and husband, Jerry, of Louisa; three sisters, Louise Stinson of South Boston, Jean White and Helen Hackney, both of Danville; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Moore was preceded in death by two brothers, Johnny and Herman Crenshaw.

A funeral service will be held today, January 23 at 2 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Isaac Mooneyham officiating. Burial will follow in Pleasant Grove United Church of Christ Cemetery.

Joseph David Moorefield

Joseph David Moorefield of Nathalie died December 30, 2004 at his home.
Mr. Moorefield was born December 26, 1942, the son of Deacon Claude and Ethel Moorefield. He was a member of Republican Grove Baptist Church.

A funeral service was held January 3 at 2 p.m. at Republican Grove Baptist Church in Nathalie with the Rev. L.S. Otey conducting the service. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Survivors of Mr. Moorefield include two sisters, Gelois and husband, Callon, of Nathalie and Henrietta Scott of Newark, Del.; three brothers, Tucker and wife, Lynn Moorefield, of Newark, Jimmie and wife, Berta Moorefield of Madison Heights, and George and wife, Diedre Moorefield, of Mt. Ranier, Md.

Mildred Owen Moser (2004)

Funeral services for Mildred Owen "Granny" Moser of Alton were held Sunday at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Vance Midgett officiating.
Burial was in Clover Cemetery.

Mrs. Moser, 75, died Friday at her home.

She was a retired Craddock-Terry employee.

Mrs. Moser was born May 13, 1928 in Halifax County, a daughter of the late Willie Fuller Owen and Gertrude Nichols Owen.

She is survived by one son, Tommy King and wife Linda of Nathalie, two daughters, Pauline Holt and husband Wayne of Clover and Linda Conner and husband Pete of Crystal Hill.

Other survivors include two sisters, Laverne Hazelwood of South Boston and Gracie Douglas of Long Island, Virginia, and three brothers, Simmon Owen of South Boston, Kenneth Owen of Vernon Hill and Bill Owen of Buffalo Junction, 10 grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and two step-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Mary King Holt, and one grandson, S.W. Barnett.

The family requests that those wishing to give memorials consider Halifax Regional Hospice, 2204 Wilborn Ave., South Boston, Va. 24592.

Mildred Weatherford Murray

Funeral services for Mrs. Mildred Lee Weatherford Murray, 88, of South Boston, will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Main Street United Methodist Church.

A private burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery for those wishing to attend.
Mrs. Murray died Saturday, January 10, 2004, at Halifax Regional Hospital.

She was born in Halifax County on July 4, 1915, a daughter of John Anderson Weatherford Sr. and Annie Hardie Weatherford and was married to Clarence Eugene Murray.

Mrs. Murray was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church.

She is survived by three daughters, Patricia M. Conner and husband Edwin of Clover, Lorraine M. Brandon and husband Dean of Alton and Valerie M. Compton and husband Dewey of South Boston, one brother, W. Burton Weatherford Sr. of Halifax, one sister, Annette W. Turner of Lawrenceville, eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at Powell Funeral Home on Tuesday from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. and other times at her home, 726 Marshall Avenue in South Boston.

John Francis Nesline Jr.

John Francis Nesline Jr., 86, of 12209 River Road, South Boston died February 3, 2004 at his home.

Mr. Nesline was born April 20, 1917, in Dorcester, Mass. the son of the late John Francis Nesline Sr. and Adeline Chevalier Nesline and was married to the late Eloise Hayes Wagoner Nesline. He was a member of St. Paschal Catholic Church and was a WWII Veteran.

Survivors include three daughters, Cynthia Ann Nesline McFarline of Little Rock, Ark., Deborah Rose Nesline Christian of Norman, Okla. and Judie Wagoner Creath of South Boston; two sons, George Franklin Wagoner of Wake Forest, N.C. and William John Wagoner of New York City, N.Y.; one brother, Richard Maximillian Nesline of Silver Springs, Md.; and 12 grandchildren.

Mr. Nesline was also preceded in death by one son, John Francis Nesline III; and one sister, Ellen Rose Nesline.

A graveside service will be held tomorrow, February 5 at 2 p.m. at Fairfax Memorial Park, Fairfax.

Phillip Wayne Newton

Phillip Wayne Newton, 19, of Scottsburg, died Friday, March 19, 2004, at Halifax Regional Hospital.

He was born in Halifax County on February 25, 1985, the son of Ernest Herbert "Sam" Newton Jr., and Whonda Carter Newton. He was an employee of Brian Locklear Construction.

Mr. Newton is survived by his parents, one sister, Dana Culley of Cluster Springs, his maternal grandfather, Henry Carter of Chatham, his paternal granparents, Ernest Newton, Sr., and wife Irma of Virgilina, one maternal great-grandmother, Virginia Chumley of Danville, five aunts, Sharon Stump, Dawn Carter, Kathryn Whitt, Virginia Elliott and Louise Newton, and five uncles, Steve Carter, Randy Carter, Michael Whitt, Michael Elliott and Danny Newton.

Funeral services will be held today, March 22, at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Jim McAlister officiating.
Burial will follow at Floral Hills Memory Gardens in Danville.

Lillian Dodd Oakes

Lillian Dodd Oakes, 83, of Blairs, died Saturday, January 17, 2004, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

She was born in Halifax County on February 28, 1920, the daughter of the late Robert Bracy Dodd and Willie Barley Dodd and was the wife of the late Joseph N. Oakes.

She was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church.

Mrs. Oakes is survived by three daughters, Shelby Jean O. Boyd of Ringgold, Frances O. Tate of Danville and Judy O. Simmons of Alton, six sons, Robert Lee Oakes of Halifax, Leonard B. Oakes and Larry Wayne Oakes, both of Blairs, Maynard Allen Oakes of Ringgold, and Earl Lester Oakes and Dewey Gerald Oakes, both of Dry Fork, two brothers, Charlie Dodd and Robert Dodd, both of Danville, one sister, Mary Snow of Dry Fork, fourteen grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, January 20, at 3 p.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church Cemetery in Java with the Rev. Carl Berger officiating.
The family will receive friends Monday, January 19, at Scott Funeral Home from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. and at other times at the residence.

Bailey Cornelius 'B.C.' Owen, Jr.

Bailey Cornelius 'B.C.' Owen Jr., 67, of Clarksville died February 18, 2004 at his home.

Mr. Owen was born in Mecklenburg County. He worked at Burlington Industries from 1956 until 1971; then worked as a butcher at Vaughan's Grocery in Clarksville and Farmer's Foods in South Boston.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today, February 20 at Buffalo Baptist Tabernacle, where Mr. Owen served on the Deacon Board. Burial will follow in Oakhurst Cemetery in Clarksville.

Survivors include his wife, Annie Lee Mulchi Owen; one daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Chris Dalton of Buffalo Junction; and two sisters, Kathleen Canada of Richmond and Merle Newton of Buffalo Junction.

James Watkins Owen

James Watkins Owen, 64, of South Boston died February 22, 2004.

Mr. Owen was born April 18, 1939, in Halifax County, a son of Howard Watkins Owen and the late Lydia Nichols Owen. He was retired from the Westinghouse Corporation where he worked as a Coil Winder.

In addition to his father, Mr. Owen is survived by his son, Kevin T. Owen and his wife, Mary, of Nathalie; sister, Hazel Womack and her husband, Henry, of Richmond; a niece, Tammy Clark; and a nephew, Randy Womack, both also of Richmond.

A memorial service for Mr. Owen will be held at 2 p.m. February 28 at Crystal Hill Southern Baptist Church with the Revs. Ed Griffith and Vance Midgett officiating.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Halifax County Humane Society or the charity of your choice.

Robert Edward Palmer

Robert Edward Palmer, 73, of 1085 Leda Rd., Nathalie, died March 21, 2004 at his home.

Mr. Palmer was born in Halifax County on November 8, 1930, the son of the late Willie and Minnie Younger Palmer. He was a member of the New Zion Baptist Church and a Korean War Army veteran.

His survivors include his wife: Maple Powell Palmer; niece: Kim Lewis; and nephew: Harold Palmer.

A funeral service will be held today, March 26, at 2 p.m., at the New Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. Willie Yancey officiating. Burial will be held in the church cemetery.
