Tanner Pannell
Deacon Tanner Pannell, 93, of 1173 East Elkhorn Road, Java died February 18, 2004 at his home.
Born in Pittsylvania County, July 22, 1910, he was the son of the late Lemon Pannell and Lelia Dickerson Pannell.
Deacon Pannell was twice married, first to the late Ethel Tucker Pannell and secondly to Susie Plummer Pannell who survives. He was a self-employed merchant and was a member of Mt. Airy Baptist Church where he served as a trustee, deacon and a member of the finance committee.
In addition to his wife of the home, he is survived by one son, Ray C. Pannell of Richmond; one brother, Thomas Pannell and his wife, Virginia, of Philadelphia, Pa.; two sisters, Mildred Gill of Winston-Salem, N.C. and Viola Rue of Charlotte, N.C.; one grandson, Ian Pannell and wife, Veronica; a great-grandson, Ethan Pannell, all of Jessup, Md; two godsons, Elder Stafford Moore of Fredericksburg and Frank Coleman of Yadon, Pa.
A funeral service for Deacon Pannell will be held February 22 at 1 p.m. at Mt. Airy Baptist Church, Gretna. The Rev. R.P. King will officiate. Burial will follow in Elkhorn Baptist Church Cemetery, Java.
Flossie Daniel Perkins
Flossie Daniel Perkins, 88, of Myrtle Beach, S.C., died Saturday, March 20, 2004, at Myrtle Beach Manor, in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
She was born in Halifax County on September 11, 1915, the daughter of the late Jim Daniel Perkins and Clarice Perkins Saunders.
Miss Perkins was a member of Hunting Creek Baptist Church.
She is survived by one sister, Bernice Garrett of South Boston, and one brother, Albert Saunders of Salem.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 23, at 2 p.m. at Hunting Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Anthony Sisk officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Powell Funeral Home tonight from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Kenneth Frederic Perkins
Kenneth Frederic Perkins, 64, of Stovall Trail, died Friday, April 2, 2004, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
He was born in Halifax County on February 22, 1940, the son of the late Henry W. Perkins and Gladys Younger Perkins.
Mr. Perkins is survived by two sons, Anthony and Tyrone Perkins, both of Washington, D.C., two sisters, Coreen Stovall of Halifax and Sarah White of Maryland, two brothers, Ernest and Thomas Perkins, both of Washington, D.C., other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 7, at 11 a.m. at the Chapel of Dunn and Sons with the Rev. L.S. Leigh officiating. Burial will follow in the family cemetery.
The family is receiving friends at the home of George W. Stovall, 1190 Stovall Trail, Halifax.
William Lee Perkins
William Lee 'Bill' Perkins of Cary, N.C. died January 25, 2004. He was the son of the late John William Perkins and Garnette Perkins Clark of Halifax County.
Survivors include his wife, Catherine, of Cary; one son, W. Cary Perkins of Shelbyville, Ky.; one daughter, Mary Strautin and her husband, Craig, of Cary; one sister, Kathleen P. Clark of Nathalie; one granddaughter, Amanda Rucker and her husband, Brandon, of Shelbyville; and one great-grandson, Gaven Rucker of Shelbyville.
A funeral service for Mr. Perkins was held January 29 at First Baptist Church of Cary by the Rev. Jerry Parker. Burial followed in Evergreen Cemetery in Roanoke with the Rev. Robert D. Smith presiding.

Arthur Melvin Poole
Arthur Melvin Poole, 56, of Virgilina, husband of Janet Comer Poole, died February 18, 2004 at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Mr. Poole was a member of North Fork Baptist Church, and worked for ABB of South Boston for 30 years with his last assignment as a Field Service Technician.
A funeral service will be held tomorrow, February 21 at 1 p.m. at North Fork Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Poole is survived by his mother, Eva Talley Poole; four sons, Michael Arthur Poole and his wife, Tonia, of Nathalie, Thomas Wayne Poole of South Boston, Kenny Ray Poole of Appomattox and Brian Keith Conner and his wife, Karen, of Danville; three brothers, Arnold R. Poole of South Boston, Stevie W. Poole and Timmie L. Poole, both of Buffalo Junction; and four grandchildren, Brianne, Kolby, Kylie and Cheyenne. He was preceded in death by his father, Melvin Green Poole, and a son, Jeff Scott Poole.
The family will receive friends this evening, February 20, from 7:00 until 9:00, at Watkins Cooper Lyon Funeral Home in Clarksville.

Glen Austin Poindexter
Funeral services for Mr. Glen Austin Poindexter Jr., will be held Friday, February 27, 2004 at 12 noon with services at the Millstone Baptist Church.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Mr. Poindexter, of Alchie Lane in Nathalie, died Sunday, February 22, 2004 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
He was 60.
Mr. Poindexter was born in Halifax County on July 16, 1943 to the late Glen Austin Poindexter Sr., and the late Viola Hendricks Poindexter.
He was a member of Sunflower Baptist Church.
Mr. Poindexter is survived by two sisters, Barbara P. Robinson of Temple Hills, Md., and Ruth Sweeney of Washington, D.C., three aunts, two uncles, one brother-in-law, William Robinson of Temple Hills, Md, four nieces, two nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
Ira Walton Poole
Ira Walton Poole, 63, of 1011 Tennessee Street, Virgilina, died March 24, 2004 at his home.
Mr. Poole was born on October 30, 1940 in Halifax County, the son of the late Mary Ford Poole and Aubrey Elburn Poole. He was married to Joan Throckmorton Poole was retired from Lanco Paving Co.
His survivors include his wife; three daughters: Kimberly (Steve) Smith of Shawsville, Kathy (Mike) Olszewski of Blacksburg and Karen Virginia Poole of Chapel Hill, N.C.; three sisters: Cassie Bowyer and Virginia Dixon of Roxboro, N.C.; and Ann Poole of Virgilina; brother: Owen “Moose” Poole of South Boston; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers.
A graveside service will be held today, March 26, at 2 p.m., at Virgilina Cemetery with the Rev. Harvey Carnes and Dr. Michael Haskett officiating.

John Thurston Pool, 80, of Clarksville, husband of Carrie F. Pool, died March 9, 2004 at his home.
Mr. Pool was a retired tobacconist and farmer, and was a member of Jamieson Memorial United Methodist Church in Clarksville where services will be held at 2 p.m. today, March 12. Burial will be in Shady Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery in Virgilina.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Pool is survived by two sons, John T. Pool Jr. of Wilmington, N.C. and Delbert E. Pool of South Boston; one daughter, Donna P. Wilkins of Buffalo Junction; three brothers, W.E. 'Flip' Pool of South Boston, George E. Pool of Princeton, N.C. and Otis R. Pool of Great Falls; one sister, Dorothy P. Watts of South Boston; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Nathaniel and A. Frazier Pool; and sisters, Melvina P. Nelson, Virginia P. Lowery, Evon P. Comer, and Madeline P. Bishop.

Stephen Addison Powell
Stephen Addison Powell, 51, of 7092 Huell Matthews Highway, Alton died January 4, 2004 at his home.
Mr. Powell was born in Mecklenburg County on May 18, 1952, the son of Charles Addison Powell and Lucy Estelle Poteat Powell and was married to Jo Ann Perkins Powell. He was owner/operator of S&J Grocery.
Survivors include his wife; one daughter and son-in-law, Tara Lynn Powell Wilborn and Jason Edward Wilborn of South Boston; one son, Christopher Adrian Powell of South Boston; his mother of South Boston; one sister, Sandra Powell Warren of Bolivia, N.C.; and one grandson, Joshua Wilborn of South Boston.
Funeral services for Mr. Powell will be held today, January 7 at 2 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Richard Saunders and Vance Midgett officiating. Burial will follow in Halifax Memorial Gardens.

Sudie Womack Powell
Sudie Womack Powell, 82, of 3199 Thompson's Store Road, Vernon Hill died March 9 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mrs. Powell was born in Halifax County on March 21, 1921, the daughter of Jossie Womack. She was married to the late William Jackson Powell and was a member of New Zion Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Carolyn M. Owens of Forestville, Md.; seven sons, William Jackson Powell, James Fulton Powell, Lewis Edward Powell and Anthony Wayne Powell, all of Brooklyn, N.Y., Franklin B. Powell and Billy Ray Powell, both of Vernon Hill, and Bruce Andrew Powell of Durham, N.C.; her mother of Vernon Hill; two sisters, Gladys Barksdale of Nathalie and Alice Holt of Vernon Hill; three brothers, Roosevelt Womack of Brooklyn, Onzie Womack and Willie Mack Womack, both of Vernon Hill; 19 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for Mrs. Powell will be held tomorrow, March 13 at 1 p.m. at New Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. Willie Yancey officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The remains will lie-in-state at the church one hour prior to the funeral service.

Irma Thames Puryear
Funeral services for Mrs. Irma Thames Puryear of South Boston will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Brooks Funeral Homes Chapel with the Rev. Phil Showers officiating.
Burial will be at Halifax Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Puryear, 80, died Friday at Halifax Regional Hospital.
A Mecklenburg County native, she was born July 20, 1923, a daughter of the late John Robert Thames and Sarah Elizabeth O'Geary Thames. She was married to the late Page Grant Puryear.
Mrs. Puryear, a homemaker, was a member of McCanless Memorial United Methodist Church.
She is survived by three daughters, Paigie Puryear Allnutt and husband Robert of Halifax, Judith Puryear Wynne of Richmond and Lydia P. Thompson of South Boston.
Other survivors include one sister, Rachel Thames Hunziker of High Point, N.C., two brothers, Billy Thames and Garland Thames, both of Clarksville, one grandson, Robert Harold Allnutt and wife Lisa of Roanoke, four granddaughters, Stacey Allnutt Goin and husband DeWitt of Prospect, Kelley Michelle Wynne and Brittiany Lynne Wynne, both of Richmond, and Shannon Bowery Mangum and husband Bobby of Roxboro, N.C., five great-grandchildren and other nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by brothers Woodrow Thames, Frank Leo Thames and Clifton Thames, and sisters, Rosa Thames, Jean Tisdale, Virgie Elliott and Vera Patterson.
Visitation time at Brooks Funeral Homes is Tuesday from 7:00-8:30 p.m. and at other times at the home, 111 White Oak Drive, South Boston.

John Leslie Puryear Sr.
The retired owner of Puryear Flowers, John Leslie Puryear Sr., died Friday, Feb. 20, 2004 at The Woodview.
Mr. Puryear was 95 years old, born Dec. 13, 1908.
Funeral services for Mr. Puryear will be held Monday, Feb. 23, at 2 p.m. at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel, with burial at Oak Ridge Cemetery in South Boston.
The Rev. Doug Martin will officiate.
Mr. Puryear was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church.
He was born December 13, 1908 in Halifax County, a son of the late Nannie Wilborn Puryear and Richard M. Puryear.
He is survived by one son, J. Leslie Puryear Jr., of Mexico, one daughter, Joncy P. Martin and her husband, Clutch, of Graham, N.C., 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one daughter, Aileene P. Murphy.
The family will receive friends after the funeral service at the home of Karen and Mike King, 2906 North Main Street, South Boston.
Samuel Edward Puryear
Samuel Edward Puryear, 42, of 2041 Philpott Road, South Boston died February 13, 2004 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mr. Puryear was born in Halifax County on April 11, 1961, the son of Carlton W. ‘Pete’ Puryear Sr. and Shirley Yancey Puryear. He was employed as a truck driver.
Survivors include his parents of South Boston; four daughters, Heather, Kelley and Samantha Puryear, all of South Boston, and Victoria Puryear of Blairs; one sister, Joanne P. Smith and her husband, Tony, of South Boston; one brother, Carlton W. Puryear Jr. and his wife, Mary, of Durham, N.C.; and one grandson, Jonathan Hammock of South Boston.
A funeral service for Mr. Puryear was held February 15 at 2 p.m. at Black Walnut Baptist Church with the Revs. Richard Saunders and H.V. Conner officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Earl Lee Ragsdale
Earl Lee Ragsdale, 55, of 1029 Pine Height Trail, Halifax died March 13, 2004 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mr. Ragsdale was born in Halifax County on January 23, 1948, the son of the late Frank Ragsdale and Margaret Stephens Ragsdale.
Survivors include one sister, Thelma Williams of Halifax; one brother, James Ragsdale of Halifax; one sister-in-law, Lillie Mae Ragsdale; and a devoted friend, Arthur Wade.
A funeral service for Mr. Ragsdale will be held Friday, March 19 at 1 p.m. at Crawford House Chapel with District Superintendent Leonia Palmer officiating.
Burial will follow in St. Paul CME Church Cemetery. After 10 a.m. on March 18, the remains will lie-in-state at the Crawford House Chapel in Halifax.

Annie Boyd Redd
Annie Boyd Redd, 72, of Saxe died March 15, 2004 at her home.
Mrs. Redd was born in Charlotte County on May 16, 1931, the daughter of William Boyd and Susie Goode Boyd and was married to Wirt Henry Redd.
She was a member of First Baptist Church of Wylliesburg.
Survivors include her husband; four daughters, Mary Walker of Skipwith, Martha Walker of South Boston, Linda Goldman of Cullen and Hazel Mosley of Saxe; five sons, Roger Redd, William Redd and Edward Redd, all of Washington, D.C., Andrew Redd of Saxe and George Redd of Red Oak; 41 grandchildren; 68 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Estelle Boyd of Wylliesburg and Hazel Mosley of Randolph; two brothers, Clyde Boyd and William Boyd, both of Red Oak. Mrs. Redd was preceded in death by two sons, Henry Louis and R. David Gene Redd.

Mary Lessie Reid
Mary Lessie Reid, 93, of Halifax, formerly of New York, died January 7, 2004 at The Woodview.
Ms. Reid was born in Halifax County on March 10, 1910, the daughter of Phenious Reid and Alice Sydnor Reid. She was a member of Ellis Creek Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sisters-in-law, Mary Reid of Baltimore and Edmonia Frazier of Clover.
Funeral services for Ms. Reid will be held tomorrow, January 10 at 11 a.m. at Crawford House Chapel in Halifax with the Rev. Sandy Palmer officiating.
