Daniel Edward Reeves
Daniel Edward 'Ned' Reeves, age 74, of Halifax died January 31, 2004 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mr. Reeves was born in Norfolk on April 17, 1929, the son of the late Daniel Edward Reeves Sr. and Piercie Jones Reeves, and was married to the late June Weatherford Reeves. He was a member of the Halifax County, and North Carolina Beekeepers Associations and a member of Dan River Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Dianne Holt Reeves of Halifax; one brother and sister-in-law, Robert Russell 'Bob' Reeves and wife, Ramona, of Montgomery, Ala.; one sister-in-law, Evelyn W. Hastings of Richmond.
Funeral services for Mr. Reeves will be held at Powell Funeral Home Chapel today, February 4, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Melvin Bradshaw officiating. Burial will follow at Asbury United Methodist Church Cemetery in Vernon Hill.

Frances Moorefield Riddle
Frances Moorefield Riddle, 87, of 7038 L.P. Bailey Memorial Highway, Halifax died March 18, 2004 at The Woodview.
Mrs. Riddle was the daughter of Joseph Henry Moorefield and Ruth Edwards Moorefield and was married to Olin Carson Riddle Sr. She was a member of McKendree United Methodist Church and was a retired employee of Leggett Department Store.
Survivors include one son, Olin Carson Riddle Jr. and wife, Betty, of Nathalie; two brothers, Allen Moorefield of South Boston and James L. Moorefield of Greensboro, N.C.; one sister, Edith Talley of Alton; two grandsons, David Riddle and wife, Mitzi, of South Boston and Daniel Riddle and wife, Kelly, of Richmond; and one great-grandson, Trevor Carson Riddle of South Boston.
Funeral services for Mrs. Riddle were held March 21 at 2 p.m. at McKendree United Methodist Church with the Revs. Jack Goins and Shelton Miles officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Edith Rosser
Edith Rosser, 88, of South Boston died January 19, 2004 at The Autumn Care Nursing Home in Altavista.
Mrs. Rosser was born in Pittsylvania County on September 9, 1915, the daughter of the late Howard Wesley Slayton and Lillian Martin and was married to the late Osborne Rosser. She was a member of the Mt. Nebo Pentecostal Church of Halifax.
Survivors of Mrs. Rosser include four daughters, Rev. Ellaressie Austin and husband, Louis, of Lynch Station, Beatrice Kennedy and Juanita Watkins and husband, Lee, all of Baltimore, Md., and Mattie Miles and husband, Robert, of Richmond; two sons Roosevelt Rosser and wife, Sylvia, of Franklin Park, N.J. and Herman Rosser and wife, Barbara, of Baltimore, Md.; a son-in-law, Robert Miller, of South Boston; three sisters, Estelle Waller of Long Island, Eunice Patrick and husband, L.G., and Pearl Walthal and husband,Coolidge, all of Upper Darby, Pa.; 24 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and five great-great grandchildren. One daughter, Mae Lois Miller, preceded Mrs. Rosser in death.
A funeral service will be held tomorrow, January 24, at 2 p.m. at Grace Baptist Church in Altavista.
The family will receive friends at the church this evening, January 23, from 7:00-8:00, and other times at the residence of the Rev. Ellaressie and Louis Austin at 5952 Tardy Mountain Road, Lynch Station.
Richard Allen Satterfield
Richard Allen Satterfield, 73, of Halifax died January 27, 2004 at Duke University Medical Center.
He was born in Halifax County on July 27, 1930, the son of William Henry Satterfield and Mary Ann Rottler Satterfield and was married to the late Doris Yeatts Satterfield. Mr. Satterfield was retired from Burlington Industries and was a U.S. Navy Veteran.
Survivors include one daughter, Gale Walker of Halifax; one granddaughter, Wendy A. Walker Gano, USAF, Germany; one brother, Clarence Satterfield of Clarksville; two sisters, Annie Mae S. Satterfield of Vernon Hill and Leona S. Huskey of North Highlands, Calif. He was preceded in death by a son, Clarence Eugene Satterfield.
A private graveside service will be held with the Rev. Rudolph Jacobs officiating.

Lucy White Saunders
Lucy White Saunders, 78, formerly of Halifax County, died January 13, 2004 in Florence, S.C.
Mrs. Saunders was born in Pittsylvania county on April 20, 1925, the daughter of the late Cooper White and Lydia Byrd Dodson White and was married to the late Henry Jake Saunders. She was a member of Liberty United Church of Christ.
Survivors include two daughters, Phyllis Saunders Ragsdale of Nathalie and Wanda Saunders Coates and husband, Frank, of Pamplico, S.C.; one son, Darryl Saunders and wife, Barbara, of Danville; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for Mrs. Saunders will be held tomorrow, January 15 at 2 p.m. at Liberty United Church of Christ with the Rev. Dwight Moore officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Doris St. John Shields
Doris St. John Shields, 100, of 3977 Old Well Road, Phenix died February 23, 2004 in Lynchburg General Hospital. She was wife for 71 years to the late B.C. Shields Jr.
Mrs. Shields was born in Charlotte County on April 18, 1903, a daughter of the late Walter Henry St. John and Etta Ramsey St. John. She was a lifetime member of Midway Baptist Church, received her teaching certificate from Longwood College and taught elementary education in Charlotte County.
Survivors include two sons and their wives, Beverly Craddock Shields III and Jackie, of Halifax and M. Reid Shields and Margaret, of Appomattox; two grandchildren; one step-grandchild; two great-grandchildren; and four step great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Hubert Lee St. John and Harry Jones St. John.
Graveside services for Mrs. Shields will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow, February 26, in Midway Baptist Church Cemetery by the Rev. Joey Anthony.

Maggie Lee Bolton Shearin
Maggie Lee Bolton Shearin, 93, of Bullock, N.C. died January 3, 2004 in South Boston.
Mrs. Shearin was a native of Warren County, N.C. and retired from Burlington Industries. She was the widow of Malvin Hill Shearin.
A funeral service was held January 6 at 2 p.m. in the Watkins Cooper Lyon Funeral Home Chapel in Clarksville. Officiating was the Rev. H.V. Conner. Burial followed in Rock Spring Baptist Church Cemetery in Townsville.
Surviving Mrs. Shearin are her son and daughter-in-law, David and Norma Shearin of Chesterfield; grandchildren, Brenda Dyer, Marion Newby, Terry Grogg and Susan Fazzio; 10 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Shearin was preceded in death by children, Dorothy Shearin Williams, Jerry Hartwell Shearin and Jackie Hill Shearin.

Lois Slavin
Lois Slavin, 76, of Montgomery, Ala., died Saturday, February 28, 2004.
She is survived by one daughter, Patricia "Mz. Pat" Crew of Halifax, one sister, Ida Mae Wright of Monroeville, Ala., and one brother, Ralph Berry of Decatur, Ala.
She was preceded in death by her husband William Slavin.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 3, in Montgomery, Ala.

Cabel Earl Smiley
Cabel Earl Smiley, 83, of Ashland, died Saturday, March 27, 2004.
Mr. Smiley was a decorated WW II veteran and worked for Dupont for 42 years.
He was a member of Lebanon United Methodist Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars and was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans.
Mr. Smiley is survived by his wife of 59 years, Anne "Connie" Baugh Smiley, one daughter, Kathryn A. Smiley Andelman of Arlington, one son, Kenneth Sterling Smiley of Blacksburg, two brothers, John Clifton Smiley of Scottsburg and Harry Edward Smiley of Newport News, one nephew and three nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Sterling and Lettie Russell Smiley of Clover, one sister, Effie Smiley Luck and one brother Dewy Garland Smiley.
Funeral services will be held at Reid Funeral Home, 412 South Washington Highway, Ashland, at 2 p.m. Tuesday with burial in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the Reid Funeral Home from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Monday.

Edna Thomas Smith
Edna Thomas Smith, 92, 4061 River Rd., South Boston, died March 22, 2004.
Mrs. Smith was born May 10, 1911 in Halifax County, the daughter of the late George Hutchin Thomas and Sophronia Elliott Thomas. She was married to the late Algie “Jack” Smith and was a member of Harmony United Methodist Church and the UMW.
Her survivors include three nephews: Glenn Walker of Alton, Berkeley Yancey of Halifax and Melvin Yancey of South Boston; three nieces: Virginia Harris of South Boston, Eunice Slayton of Vernon Hill and Faye Fuller of Roxboro, N.C.; and two sisters-in-law: Sue Thomas of South Boston and Ruth Smith of Alton.
A funeral service will be held tomorrow, March 25, at 2 p.m., at Harmony United Methodist Church. Burial will be held in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be held tonight from 7:00-8:30 p.m. and at other times at the home.

Ida Beatrice Neal Smith
Ida Beatrice Neal Smith, 87, of 1309 Bayonne Avenue, South Boston died at Outlook Pointe, Fredericksburg on April 1, 2004.
Mrs. Smith was born in Halifax County on March 21, 1917, the daughter of Charlie Henry Neal and Annie Yeatts Neal, and was married to the late Lawrence P. Smith. She was a member of First Baptist Church of South Boston, and the American Legion Post 8 Auxiliary.
Survivors include one son, Lawrence P. 'Larry' Smith Jr. and his wife, Pamela, of South Boston; one daughter, JoAnne S. Farley and her husband, Harry D., of Fredericksburg; one sister, Ruby Smith of Newport News; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for Mrs. Smith will be held tomorrow, April 3 at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Tim Cannon officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery.

John Walter Smith, 80, of Sterling, a native of Scottsburg, died January 23, 2004.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Aurora Smith; four children, Diana Greer of Richmond, Raymond Smith of Chapel Hill, N.C., Donald Smith of Henderson, Ky. and Roger Smith of Sterling; two sisters, Reba Smith of Seattle, Wash. and Frances S. Crews of Scottsburg; five brothers, Willie Lee Smith of Scottsburg, I. Lindy Smith of Doswell, Joe A. Smith of Richmond, Franklin H. Smith of Halifax and Charlie D. Smith of Germanton, N.C.; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 31 at 2 p.m. at Bowling Green Baptist Church where Mr. Smith was a long-standing member.

Mabel Coleman Smith
Mabel Coleman Smith, 86, of Oxen Hill, Md., formerly of Java, died March 2, 2004 in Fort Washington Hospital.
Born December 26, 1917, in Halifax County she was a daughter of the late Charlie Henry Coleman and Bettie Logan Coleman, and was married to the late Lonnie Smith.
Survivors of Mrs. Smith include five daughters, Delaine Ellis and Dora Gilchrist, both of Waldorf, Md., Betty Smith of Oxen Hill, Phyllis Smith of Capital Heights, Md. and Shirley Smith of Washington, D.C.; three sons, Charlie Smith of Landover, Md., Michael Smith of Capital Heights and Willie Smith of Washington; one brother, John Coleman of Java; two sisters, Alice Minor of Java and Leona Coleman of Philadelphia, Pa.
She was also preceded in death by one son, Lonnie Smith Jr.; two sisters, Thelma and Rosa Coleman; and three brothers, James, Vattel and Clarence Coleman.
Funeral services for Mrs. Smith will be held tomorrow, March 6 at 11 a.m. at Elkhorn Baptist Church by Dr. C. Lewis Motley. Burial will follow in the Coleman Family Cemetery.

Allen Bennett Snead
Allen Bennett Snead, 40, of Halifax died February 18, 2004 at his home.
Mr. Snead was born in Halifax County on August 22, 1963, the son of the late Charlie and Mabel Snead. He was employed by Southside Community Services Board, and attended Southside Developmental Training Center.
Survivors include one sister, Brenda Snead of Clover; one brother, Barry Snead of Dryburg; foster parents, Steven Seamster of Halifax and Irene and Maurice Storck of South Boston; two foster sisters, Teresa Strazzabosco of Moorsville, N.C. and Charlotte Bennett of Maidens.
A funeral service for Mr. Snead will be held at Powell Funeral Home Chapel at 2 p.m. tomorrow, February 21, with burial in Clover Cemetery.
Visitation will be held this evening, February 20, at the funeral home from 7:00 until 8:30.
Martha Nash Starnes
Martha Nash Starnes, 69, of Odessa, Del. died at her home January 25, 2004.
Mrs. Starnes was born in Spout Springs the daughter of the late Raymond Daniel Nash and Maude Carwile Nash, and was married to the late Dr. Ronald W. Starnes. She graduated from Lynchburg College and was an elementary school teacher in the New Castle County school system.
Her survivors include three sons, Lincoln and his wife, Mary, of Canton, Ga., Daniel and wife, Connie, of Huachuca City, Ariz. and Lt. Col. Benjamin Starnes USAMC and wife, Margie, of Tacoma, Wash.; five granddaughters, Shaelyn Cheyenne, Nancy Elizabeth, Cara Elise, Jessica Nicole and Ronni Sue Reagan; one brother, Jerry Nash and wife, Geraldine, of Lynchburg; and her mother-in-law, Isabel Starnes, of South Boston.
A memorial service was held January 31 at 1 p.m. at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Odessa.

Christine Charlene Stephens, 34, of Greensboro, N.C., died March 20, 2004.
Miss Stephens was born in Halifax County on July 13, 1969, the daughter of Wallace Stephens and the late Christine Bumpass.
Her survivors include her father; daughter: Shakila Johnson of Greensboro, N.C.; son: Shakal Stephens of Greensboro; four sisters: Cherri Stephens of Greensboro, Shonda Snead of Halifax, Wanelle Middleton of San Antonio, Tex. and Deronia Stephens of South Boston; three brothers: Wallace Stephens Jr. of Baltimore, Md., Curtis Stephens of Newbern, N.C. and Kevin Stephens of Halifax; two brothers-in-law: Min. Ronnie Snead of Halifax and David Middleton of San Antonio; sister-in-law: Theresa Stephens; and a friend: Tracey Fitzgerald.
A funeral service will be held tomorrow, March 25 at 3 p.m. at the Crawford House in Halifax with Apostle Nathalie Chambliss officiating.

Syria Dunn Sykes of Brooklyn, N.Y., formerly of Halifax County, died January 18, 2004 in Brooklyn.
She was the daughter of the late Moody and Agustus Chappell Dunn.
Funeral services for Ms. Sykes will be held January 24 in Brooklyn.
