Virginia Anderson Whitlow

A funeral service for Virginia Anderson Whitlow will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel in Danville, with burial in Highland Burial Park.

The Rev. Carl Burger will officiate.

Mrs. Whitlow, 86, died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2004 at Roman Eagle Memorial Home where she had been a resident two years.

She was born December 3, 1917, in Halifax County, a daughter of the late Willard Kent Anderson and Rebecca Perkins Anderson.

She had lived for 40 years in the Ringgold community and had previously lived in Halifax County.

Mrs. Whitlow was a member of the Ringgold Baptist Church, where she had been active with the Joy Club and had served as secretary of the Fidelis Sunday school class.

She was predeceased by her husband, Howard F. Whitlow Sr.

Mrs. Whitlow is survived by three sons, Earl T. Whitlow and H.F. Whitlow Sr., both of Ringgold, and James W. "Jim" Whitlow of Burlington, N.C., and four sisters, Christine Myers of South Hill, Odelia Beck of Richmond and Julia Beck and Bernice Wilkinson, both of Kenbridge, six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the residence of her son, 3449 Ringgold Church Road (Route 726).

Phillip Bryant Whitt Sr.

Phillip Bryant Whitt Sr., 61, of 1055 Watts Trail, Virgilina died March 16, 2004 at his home.

Mr. Whitt was born in Halifax County on September 6, 1942, the son of Frances Gravitt Whitt and Phillip Austin Whitt. He was married to Julia Cooper Whitt.

He was a member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church, the Virgilina Masonic Lodge, a former member of the Southside Community Services Board, and was the president of Southfax Insurance Agency, Inc., Southern Gold & Diamonds, and Halifax Road Auto Sales.

A funeral service for Mr. Whitt will be held at Shady Grove United Methodist Church tomorrow, March 18 at 2 p.m. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Phillip Bryant Whitt Jr. and his wife, Nancy, of Ahoskie, N.C., Kevin Neal Whitt and wife, Tamara, of Virgilina, and Darrell Gene Whitt of Virgilina; two sisters, Brenda W. Milam and her husband, Joe of Greensboro, N.C., and Tammy W. Boyd and husband, Wayne, of Virgilina; one brother, Mike Whitt of Virgilina; five granddaughters, Jayme Whitt Pattarini, Sara Whitt, Jennifer Parker, Nicole Whitt and Grace Whitt; one grandson, Daniel Whitt; one great-granddaughter, Gwenyth M. Pattarini; and special friends, Sharon and Bobby Pollard.

The family will receive friends this evening, March 17, between 7:00 and 8:30 at Brooks Funeral Home, and other times at the home.

Thomas Edward Wilborn

Thomas Edward Wilborn, 65, of Warrenton, N.C. died February 6, 2004 at his home.
Born in Halifax County, he was a son of the late Thomas and Alma Davis Wilborn and was married to Barbara Hester Wilborn. He was retired from Collins & Aikman Corp.

Mr. Wilborn is survived by his wife; one son, Jason Wilborn and wife, Tara, of South Boston; one daughter, Carol Frances Wilborn of Westminster, S.C.; two sisters, Flora Gentry and Hazel W. Bordeau, both of Roxboro, N.C.; and one grandchild, Joshua Edward Wilborn.

A funeral service for Mr. Wilborn was held at 3 p.m. February 8 at Brooks & White Chapel in Roxboro. Burial followed in Providence Cemetery.

Virginia Farrar Wilborne

Virginia Farrar Wilborne died December 28 in Halifax Regional Hospital.

Survivors include her daughters, Melissa Davis and husband, Simmie, Gladys Tucker and Gloria Jackson; one son, Joseph Wilborne and wife, JoAnne; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Robina Farrar.

Services were held at 1 p.m. January 2 at Bethel Grove Baptist Church in Clover with the Rev. William Hicks officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Edward Byerley 'Buck' Wilkins

Edward Byerley 'Buck' Wilkins, a vital force in the business community for 70 years, died yesterday, Feb. 24, 2004 at his home in South Boston.

Mr. Wilkins was 90, born Apr. 16, 1913.

A University of Virginia Architectural School graduate, the architect was a contractor with Halifax Contractors and Builders and was also the developer and co-owner of the South Boston Speedway for 24 years.

Mr. Wilkins was associated with the Halifax County Fair for 78 years where he served as president and manager. He received the Virginia Association of Fairs "Fair Person of the Year" in 2002.

He was a World War II Army Air Force Veteran having served at Hickam Field, Honolulu, Hawaii. After Hawaii, he obtained the rank of Master Sgt. and was awarded the Bronze Star for his services in the Air Force Engineers.

He was born April 16, 1913, to the late William Wyche Wilkins and Eva Byerley Wilkins and was married to Jenny Osborne Wilkins.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church where he was a former deacon and elder, Survivors of Mr. Wilkins include his wife of 54 years; two daughters, Paige Wilkins Powell and husband Les of South Boston, and Sue Wilkins Bales and husband CJ of Cluster Springs; one son, Edward Bruce Wilkins of South Boston; one sister, Louise Wilkins Shelton of South Boston; two brothers, William Wyche 'Dub' Wilkins Jr. and wife Margaret of Turbeville, and Bailey G. Wilkins and wife Betty Pierce of Amherst; six grandchildren, Kelly Wilkins Gravitt of Richmond, Leslie W. Powell IV, Raleigh Wilkins Powell and John Oliver 'Jack' Watkins III, all of South Boston, Edward Banks 'Buck' Watkins and Abbey Lee Bales, both of Cluster Springs; one great-grandchild, Madison Brooke Watkins of Halifax; a sister-in-law, Margaret E. Wilkins of Virginia Beach; and six nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother, Lewis Banks Wilkins.

A funeral service for Mr. Wilkins will be held Friday, February 27, at Powell Funeral Home Chapel at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Russell Lee conducting the service. Burial will be at Oak Ridge Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Powell Funeral Home Thursday night from 7 until 9, and other times at his home, 102 Merritt Street in South Boston.

Wilbur Eugene Wilkins

Wilbur Eugene Wilkins, 47, of Alexandria, formerly of Halifax County, died February 29, 2004 in Alexandria.

Mr. Wilkins was born in Halifax County on November 1, 1956, the son of the late Annie Virginia Wilkins.

Survivors include one sister, Rozella Sydnor of Alexandria; two brothers, Wayne Preston Hill of Alexandria and Harvey Wilkins of Oxon Hill, Md.
Funeral services for Mr. Wilkins were held March 6 at 2 p.m. at Harvest Assembly Family Life Center in Alexandria.

A graveside service was held March 7 at 1:30 p.m. at White Oak Fork Baptist Church Cemetery in Virgilina.

Mildred Louise Crews Williams

Mildred Louise Crews Williams, 85, of 1218 Ellis Creek Road, Nathalie died January 5, 2004 at Twin Oaks Convalescent Home.

Mrs. Williams was born in Prince Edward County on December 11, 1918, the daughter of Annie Coffey Crews and Earlie C. Crews and was married to Daniel Walker Williams. She was a member of Mt. Laurel United Methodist Church.

Graveside services will be held today, January 7, at 2 p.m. at Mt. Laurel UMC Cemetery with the Rev. Don Pizzeck officiating.

Survivors of Mrs. Williams include one daughter-in-law, Thelma Crews; one granddaughter, Tracey Richards; and two great-granddaughters, Keira Pillow and Rachael Richards, all of Richmond.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband; one daughter, Myrtle Williams Watson; one son, Francis Lee Crews; one sister, Annie Laura Crews; three brothers, Harold, Herbert and Earlie Crews; and one granddaughter, Susan Watson.

Those wishing to give memorials are asked to consider Mt. Laurel UMC.

Robert Lee Williams

Robert Lee Williams, 82, of 7145 Dryburg Road, Scottsburg died January 14, 2004 at his home.

Mr. Williams was born in Halifax County on January 31, 1921, the son of the late Virginia Snead Williams and James Thomas Williams, and was married to Frances Buchanan Williams.

He was a member of Fork Baptist Church, was a former member of the American Legion Post 8, and served in the U.S. Army. Mr. Williams was a retired farmer and employee of J.P.S.

Funeral services will be held today, January 16 at 2 p.m. at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jason Murray officiating. Burial will follow in Clover Cemetery.

Survivors of Mr. Williams include one son, Tommy Williams and wife, Linda, of Scottsburg; one daughter, Carolyn W. Wilmoth and husband, Kenneth, of Clover; two sisters, Blanche Canada of South Boston and Sally Austin of Scottsburg; two brothers, Frank Williams of Scottsburg and Jim Williams of South Boston; three granddaughters, Darlene and Jeanie Williams and Teresa Wilmoth Seamster; one grandson Ken Wilmoth; two great-grandchildren, Kelly and Heather Seamster; and a special friend, Tristan James 'T.J. Wade, of Charlotte Courthouse. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Patricia Ann Williams; and one son, Robert Page Williams.

Ashley Smith Williamson

Ashley Smith Williamson, 79, of 1223 Mt. Carmel Road, Alton, died February 1, 2004 at South Boston Manor.

Mr. Williamson was born in Halifax County on June 6, 1924, the son of the late Ona Lee Earp Williamson and William James Williamson. He was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church and was a retired farmer.

A graveside service was held February 3 at 3 p.m. at Calvary UM Church Cemetery with the Revs. David LeFon and Bob Huffman officiating.

Survivors of Mr. Williamson include two sisters, Myrtle W. Vernon of Alton and Theodora W. King of Raleigh, N.C. He was preceded in death by four sisters, Florence Elizabeth Williamson, Lucy S. Williamson, Cora Lee Williamson and Louise Williams; and one brother, James Monroe Williamson.

Desiree Kaye Propst Satterfield Willis

Desiree Kaye Propst Satterfield Willis, 48, of Sanford, N.C. died January 13, 2004.

Born in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Filmore Dodd and Dora Lee Conner Propst of South Boston.

Survivors include her husband, Robert Willis of Sanford; her father; stepmother, Betty Mann Propst; and one brother, Phil Propst, all of South Boston; three daughters, Dora Satterfield Briones and Sandy Satterfield Smith, both of Sanford, and Frankie Satterfield of Halifax; and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mrs. Willis will be held today, January 16 at 2 p.m. at Bridges Cameron Funeral Home in Sanford.

Ernest Green Wilmouth Jr.

Ernest 'Junie' Green Wilmouth Jr., 77, of 3000 McDonald Road, Scottsburg died March 9, 2004 at his home.

Mr. Wilmouth was born in Halifax County on July 19, 1926, the son of Ernest Green Wilmouth Sr. and Mertie Throckmorton Wilmouth and was married to Ida Moorefield Wilmouth. He was a member of Fork Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife; three sisters, Eleanor Rickman of Colo., Edith Crenshaw of Silver Spring, Md. and Shirley Snead of South Boston. He was preceded in death by one sister, Virginia Wilmouth; and one brother, Henry Wilmouth.

Funeral services for Mr. Wilmouth will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow, March 11 at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Rudolph Jacobs officiating.

Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery at Scottsburg.

The family will receive friends at Powell Funeral Home this evening, March 10, from 7:00 until 8:30.

Brad Thomas Wilson

Brad Thomas Wilson, 53, of Virgilina died Friday, March 5, 2004, at Halifax Regional Hospital.

He was born in Orange County, N.C., on March 17, 1950 and was married to Joan A. Daye.

Mr. Wilson is survived by his wife, two sons, Tommy Wilson and Casey Wilson, both of Hurdle Mills, N.C., one daughter, Candice Wilson of Hurdle Mills, N.C., two brothers, Mark Wilson and Charlie Wilson, both of Durham, N.C., and his godfather, Harold Tapp "Pop" of South Boston.

Memorial services will be held Tuesday, March 9, at 2:30 p.m. at Blue Wing Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Jennings officiating.

Robert Edward Wooding Sr.

Robert (Bobby) Edward Wooding Sr., 85, of Halifax County, died at his home on Saturday, February 21, 2004.

He was born in Halifax County on August 23,1918, the son of the late Robert Henry Wooding and Elizabeth Carter Wooding and was married to the late Louise Hendricks Wooding.

Mr. Wooding served as a Chief Petty Officer for the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Mr. Wooding won several awards for his work as a farmer and, in 1979, his work was recognized by the Soil and Water Conservation Commission with their Conservationist of the Year Award.

His work was a lso featured in the "Heart and Soil" documenteary produced by the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities.

He was a longtime member and former deacon of Beth Car Baptist Church.
Mr. Wooding is survived by one son, Robert Edward Wooding, Jr. of Halifax, two daughters, Susan Wooding Newton and husband Danny of South Boston and Elizabeth Wooding and husband Kenneth Cady of Palmyra, and one grandchild, Anya Elizabeth Wooding Cady.

He was preceded in death by one son, Samuel Joseph Wooding.

Graveside services will be held at the family cemetery in Halifax at 10 a.m. Friday, February 27, followed by a celebration of life at Beth Car Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the Halifax County Humane Society, P.O. Box 969, South Boston, Va. 24592; Halifax County Rescue Squad, 700 Hamilton Boulevard, South Boston, Va. 24592; or Halifax Regional Hospice, 2204 Wilborn Avenue, South Boston, Va. 24592.

Ethel Elizabeth Armbrister Wright

Memorial services for Mrs. Ethel Elizabeth Armbrister Wright will be held Monday, February 16, 2004, at 7:30 p.m., with services at the Brooks Funeral Home Chapel.

The Revs. Shelton Miles and James Crockett will officiate.

Funeral services will follow Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Dudley Mortuary in Bluefield.

Burial will follow in the Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton, W.V.
Mrs. Wright, of Stagecoach Road in Nathalie, died Saturday at the Halifax Regional Hospital.

She was 88.

Mrs. Wright was born in McDowell County, West Virginia on February 8, 1916, the daughter of the late Kathleen M. Armbrister and the late Cloyd Madison Armbrister. She was married to the late Weldon James "Happy" Wright.

She was a school teacher in McDowell County and was a member of the Northfork United Methodist Church, where she was the organist.

Mrs. Wright was also a member of the United Methodist Women and the Eastern Star.

Survivors include one daughter, Janice Wright Davis and husband Lee Roy, of Nathalie, one daughter-in-law, Lynette Wright of Daleville, two granddaughters, Sarah Hamlett and husband Bernard and Kathleen T. Jennings and husband Scottie, all of Brookneal.

She was preceded in death by one son, James Weldon Wright, II, two brothers, Cloyd Armbrister and Litz Armbrister and one sister, Hazel Jordan.
The family will receive friends at Dudley Mortuary in Bluefield Wednesday between the hours of 10 a.m. and 11 a.m.
