A. Wayland Young
A.Wayland Young, 71, of Carrollton, died Friday, February 13, 2004, at his home.
He was a native of Halifax County, a peninsula resident since 1951, and a Carrollton resident since 1977.
Mr. Young retired with 36 years of service as a supervisor in the Newport News Shipbuilding nondestructive testing department.
He was a member of Warwick Memorial United Methodist Church in Newport News, St. Tammany Lodge #5, A.F. &A.M. in Hampton and a former member of A.S.N.T.
Mr. Young is survived by his wife, Naomi C. Young, one sister, Annie Y. Satterfield of Seaford, one brother, A. Swanson Young and wife Hilda D. of Kernersville, N.C., and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his infant daughter, his parents, Stephen and Hallie Young, one sister, Virginia Y. Heath, and three bothers, Walter D., Clifton D. and James E. Young.
Funeral services will be held today, February 16, at 10 a.m. at Peninsula Funeral Home with the Rev. Steven Plymate and the Rev. Amanda Garber officiating.
Burial will follow in Parklawn Memorial Park.
Louella Carrington Yancey
Louella Carrington Yancey, 54, of 1029 Carrington Trail, Alton died January 18, 2004 at Medical College of Virginia in Richmond.
Mrs. Yancey was born in Halifax County on June 18, 1949, the daughter of the late George Carrington and Pauline Tuck Carrington, and was married to the late Wallace Junior Yancey. She was a member of Mayo Grove Baptist Church, and was formerly employed by Tultex, Inc.
Survivors include two daughters, Michelle Jones of Rougemont, N.C. and Wytonia Yancey of Alton; one son, Harold Carrington of Alton; three sisters, Odell Carrington and Carolyn Barnett, both of Alton, and Paula Burrell of Temple Hill, Md.; one brother, Harold Ray Carrington of Alton; four grandchildren; and one son-in-law, Jerry Jones. She was preceded in death by one brother, George Thomas Carrington.
Funeral services for Mrs. Yancey will be held tomorrow, January 22 at 2 p.m. at Mayo Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Lawrence Wilkerson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Ruth Elizabeth Green Younger
Graveside services for Mrs. Ruth Elizabeth Green Younger were held Sunday, February 8, 2004 at the Oak Ridge Cemetery in South Boston.
The Rev. Dr. Tim Cannon officiated.
Mrs. Younger, of South Boston, died Friday, February 6, 2004, at the Halifax Regional Hospital.
She was 80.
Mrs. Younger was the daughter of the late William Munford Greet Sr. and Vallie Watson Green.
She was the wife of the late Roy L. Younger and was a member of the First Baptist Church.
Mrs. Younger was employed by Powell Funeral Home for many years as a secretary and bookkeeper.
She is survived by one sister, Christine G. Overbey of Richmond, four nieces, Roslyn O. Harris of Richmond, Beverly G. Thomason of Halifax, Pam G. Drumheller of Richmond and Donna S. Conrad of Bascom, Fl., and five nephews, Charles W. Green and David M. Green, both of South Boston, William M. (Bill) Green III and Franklin T. Overby, both of Richmond, and Stephen Sauter of Northport, N.Y.
She was preceded in death by her son, Thomas Warren "Tommy" Younger, her parents, a sister, Rosalie G. Sauter and two brothers, William Munford Green Jr. and Beverly Russell Green.

Dodson Garland
Dodson Garland, 78, of Baltimore, Md., passed away on October 13, 2003.
Mr. Garland was born in Halifax County on October 20, 1924, the son of the late Willie and Melinda Garland. He was married to Lydia Hughes Garland and was a member of Mason Chapel Baptist Church.
His survivors include his wife; sister: Lovely Adelia Barksdale and God-child: Butch.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, Oct. 18 at 1 p.m. at the Mason Chapel Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery.
Dodson Garland (alternate obituary)
On October 13, 2003, Dodson, formerly of Carver Road; beloved husband of Lydia Inell Garland and devoted brother of Lovely Barksdale. He is also survived by seven sisters-in-law, one brother-in-law, 16 nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, one godchild Butch, numerous cousins and friends.

Helen Estes Garland
Mrs. Helen Estes Garland, 74, wife of James D. “Jimmy” Garland Sr., died Wednesday, December 24, 2003, at her residence.
Mrs. Garland was a member of First Baptist Church and owner and secretary-treasurer of Garland & Estes Oil Company in Chase City.
Funeral services were held Friday at First Baptist Church with interment in Woodland Cemetery in Chase City.
Mrs. Garland is survived by her husband, James Garland Sr., one son James D. Garland Jr., and wife Theresa of South Boston, a daughter, Patricia A. Garland of Richmond, brothers Edwin Estes and Robey Estes, sisters Mary Speight, Ruth Tanner and Margaret Hupp, all of Richmond, grandchildren Courtney A. Garland and Casey D. Garland of South Boston, and a number of nieces and nephews.

John Prentice Garland Sr.
John Prentice Garland Sr., 76, of 1107 New Bethel Road, Alton died September 22, 2003 at Berry Hill Nursing Home.
Mr. Garland was born in Bluefield, WVa. on July 21, 1927, the son of the late John 'Ned' Garland and Etta Chiles Garland and was married to the late Serena Hamlett Garland. He was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church, and was formerly employed by Dan River Mills, Inc.
Survivors include two daughters, Edna Fields of Alton and Joyce Garland of Semora, N.C.; one son, John Garland Jr. of Durham, N.C.; two sisters, Edith Hamlett of Semora and Dorothy Cunningham of South Boston; one brother, Alfred Garland of South Boston; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for Mr. Garland will be held September 26 at 2 p.m. at New Bethel baptist Church with the Rev. Harvey Bigelow officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Frances Milton Garnjost
Frances Collie Milton Garnjost, 85, of Bracey died December 27, 2003 at Community Memorial Health Center in South Hill.
Mrs. Garnjost was born in 1918 the daughter of John H. and May Ledbetter Collie of South Boston. She was first married to John M. Milton Sr. and then to Stanley L. Garnjost. She was a retired educator.
Survivors include one daughter, Susan M. Palma of Fairfield, Iowa; two sons, John M. Milton Jr. of Drakes Branch and F. Tucker Milton of Ithaca, N.Y.; one stepson, John T. Garnjost of Stamford, Conn.; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Mrs. Garnjost was also preceded in death by three brothers, Lewis, Edwin and John Collie.
Mrs. Garnjost was educated in South Boston schools before attending State Teacher's College (Longwood University) where she completed her A.B. with honors in English. She excelled in academics, was prominent in campus literary activities, and lettered in basketball; She was instrumental in starting the local chapter of-and achieving national status for-the Phi Zeta Sigma Sorority.
Upon graduation, she became a member of the faculty of Randolph Henry High School. After her first marriage they relocated to Martinsville where she taught high school, was active in Little Theater, and was nominated for Woman of the Year. In 1954, she and her family moved to Fairfax County where she taught French at Annandale High. She was chairman of the language department and installed a chapter of the National French Honor Society.
Mrs. Garnjost completed her M.A. in French at Emory University in Atlanta, Ga., where she met and married her second husband, Mr. Garnjost. She became assistant professor of modern language at LaGrange College in Ga.; acting chairman of the modern foreign language department at Longwood College; and part-time professor at multiple campuses of the Northern Virginia Community College. She also pursued doctoral studies at the Universil de Strasbourg, France, and the Universil de Lavat in Quebec. During her semi-retirement, Mrs. Garnjost collaborated on the text, 'French phonics' for Americans and presented papers to Modern Language Association (MLA) National Convention in San Francisco, Calif. and New York.
Interment for Mrs. Garnjost at Oak Ridge Cemetery in South Boston is private. A memorial service will be held at Main Street United Methodist Church on February 5, 2004. Details will be available from Powell Funeral Home in South Boston.

Mabel Carter Gibbs
Mabel Carter Gibbs, 95, of Annapolis, Md. died September 23, 2003 at The Woodview Nursing Home in South Boston.
Mrs. Gibbs was born in Bristol, Tenn. January 12, 1908, the daughter of James E. Carter and Mary Anderson Carter and was married to Charles E. Gibbs. She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Annapolis, and was retired librarian and music instructor with Arundel County, Md. Public Schools. Mrs. Gibbs was a active member of Annapolis Order of Links, Inc. and Annapolis Chapter of the A.K.A. Sorority.
Survivors include one grandson, William T. Hayes of Atlanta, Ga. and one daughter-in-law, Regina Carden Hayes of Rochester, N.Y., formerly of Scottsburg. Mrs. Gibbs was preceded in death by one son, William W. Hayes.
Graveside services will be held September 29 at 2 p.m. at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Annapolis.
The family will receive friends Saturday afternoon from 4:00 until 5:00 at the Chapel of Jeffress Funeral Home in South Boston.
Hallie Richardson Glass
Hallie Richardson Glass, 94, of 3125 Birch-Elmo Road, South Boston died July 11, 2003 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mrs. Glass was born in Halifax County on March 17, 1909, the daughter of the late Fountain Richardson and Addie Huntley Richardson and was married to the late William Henry Glass. She was a member of Mountain Grove Missionary Baptist Church.
Survivors include six daughters, Hazel Glass, Fannie Stephens and Marie Crews, all of South Boston, Mildred Wood of Danville, Hattie Womack of Blairs and Anna Palmer of St. Petersburg, Fla.; three sons, William Glass of South Boston, Luther Glass of Vernon Hill, and James Williams of Springfield Garden, N.Y.; 73 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for Mrs. Richardson will be held today, July 14 at 1 p.m. at Mountain Grove Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Arthur Crews officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the home.
Samuel Leroy Glass
Samuel Leroy Glass, of Riverview Drive in Altavista, died Friday, July 18, 2003, at Lynchburg General Hospital.
He was 78.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, July 21, at the Central Baptist Church.
The Revs. H.V. Conner and Brady Willis will officiate.
Burial will follow in the Altavista Memorial Park.
Mr. Glass was born November 18, 1924 in Halifax County to the late Lacy M. Glass and Marie Conner Glass. He was married to the late Nellie Stevens Glass and was a member of Central Baptist Church and a retired employee of Virginia Power with 42 years of service.
Survivors include one daughter, Judy Mitchell and her husband Allen Ray of Altavista, two grandchildren, Sheryl M. Hicks and her husband Andy and Ryan Allen Mitchell, one great granddaughter, Erin Elizabeth Hicks, one brother, Jesse A. Glass Sr., of Nathalie and one sister, Vivian G. Smith of Nathalie.

Larry Wayne Gilmore
Graveside services for Mr. Larry Wayne Gilmore will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the Crystal Hill Baptist Church cemetery.

Mr. Gilmore, of Alexandria and formerly of Halifax County, died Friday, October 10, 2003 in North Carolina.
He was 53.
Mr. Gilmore was born in Halifax County on November 9, 1949, a son of the late Otis Gilmore and Dorothy Odell Gilmore.
Survivors include his mother, three children, Nina and Montrel of Alexandria, and Victor of Herndon, numerous grandchildren, five aunts, Alice W. Carr of Alexandria, Marie Breedlove of Halifax County, Hilda Dixon of Richmond, Sylvia Gilmore of Maryland and Gladys Gilmore of Fayetteville, N.C., and a host of other relatives and friends.
Percy Peele Glasscock
Percy Peele Glasscock, 83, of Buffalo Junction died November 30, 2003 at his home.
Mr. Glasscock was married to Lois Link Glasscock. He was an Army Veteran of World War II, was a member of Gravel Hill Baptist Church, was a retired farmer and also worked in construction.
Funeral services were held December 2 at Watkins Cooper Lyon Chapel in Clarksville at 11 a.m. Burial followed in Gravel Hill Cemetery.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Glasscock is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Irvin and Gloria Glasscock of South Boston and J.T. and Sharon Glasscock of Buffalo Junction; three grandchildren, Adam Glasscock, April Glasscock and Diana Satterfield; one great-granddaughter, Angela Satterfield; and one sister, Alma Kimball of Chase City.
Selena Muse Gomes
Selena Muse Gomes, 80, of 11031 Chatham Road, Vernon Hill died July 20, 2003 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mrs. Gomes was born in Halifax County on November 11, 1923, the daughter of Andrew Muse and Hallie Lee Muse and was married to Richard Gomes. She was a member of New Zion Baptist Church.
Survivors include her children, Andrew, Wayne, Haywood, Claudette, Patricia, Jean, Ricardo, Yolanda, Sidney and Christine; 52 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Regina Crawford.
Funeral services for Mrs. Gomes will be held at 1 p.m. July 26 at New Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. Willie N. Yancey officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services, and other times at the home.
Lily Dale McCraw Gosney
Lily Dale McCraw Gosney, 78, of South Boston died December 4, 2003 in South Boston.
Mrs. Gosney was born in Halifax County May 14, 1925, the daughter of Samuel Mansfield McCraw and Annie Woody McCraw. She was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Cheryl G. Watts; two sons, Robert E. Gosney and wife, Barbara, and Mark A. Gosney and wife, Pill; four grandchildren, Gwendolyn G. Erickson, Mary Enid Gosney, Laura Gosney and Matthew Gosney; one step-granddaughter, Twila W. Wallace; one great-granddaughter, Kirsten Wellons; one step-great-grandson, Cedric Wallace; and one brother, Bernard McCraw.
Funeral services for Mrs. Gosney will be held tomorrow, December 6 at 7 p.m. with visitation to follow at Powell Funeral Home.

Leola Easley Graves
Leola Easley Graves, 84, of Easley Lane, died Saturday, November 29, 2003, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
She was born in Thrift, N.C., on May 2, 1919, the daughter of the late Rev. Thomas Henry Easley and Rosa J. Coleman Easley and was married to the late Alonzo Cleveland Graves.
She was a member of the St. Luke C.M.E. Church.
Mrs. Graves is survived by two daughters, Sharon Graves of Halifax and Karen G. McLellan of Stanford, Conn., seven sons, Rev. L.T. Graves of Rego Park, N.Y., Forest L. Graves of Seattle, Wash., James Gregory Graves of Stanford, Conn., Don B. Graves of Halifax, Dean B. Graves of Suitland, Md., Bishop Alan B. Graves of Halifax and Napoleon G. Graves of Woodbridge, 17 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Mrs. Graves was preceded in death by one son, Alonzo Dwight Graves.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 3, at 11 a.m. at the Main Street United Methodist Church, North Main Street, South Boston, with the Rev. Lawrence T. Graves officiating and Dr. Benjamin J. Whipper, Jr., providing the eulogy.
Burial will follow in the Halifax Memorial Gardens.
After 11 a.m. Tuesday, the remains will lie-in-state at the Crawford house, 721 North Main Street, Halifax, where the family will be receiving friends from 7 until 8 p.m.
