William Horace "Sam" Guill, 53, of 6009 Green Level Road, Scottsburg, died August 19, 2003 at his home.
Mr. Guill was born in Halifax County on September 4, 1949, son of Orpha S. and Joseph Guill. He was employed with Lewis Tree Service.
His survivors include his wife: Susan W. Guill of Scottsburg; his mother; three daughters: Brittany and Brandy Guill of Scottsburg and Elizabeth Guill of South Boston; brother: Jack Guill of Scottsburg; sister: Mary "Sweetpea" Goodwin of Scottsburg and friend: Carroll Carter. He was predeceased by his father and a brother: C.L. Guill.
A graveside service will be held Thursday, August 21 at 11 a.m. at Clover Cemetery with the Revs. Jason Murray and Aubrey Heath officiating.

Anthony Lacy Guthrie
Anthony Lacy Guthrie, 73, of 1025 Crossroads Trail, Nathalie died September 10, 2003 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
He was born in Halifax County on July 4, 1930, the son of the late Joe Henry Guthrie and Winnie Brown Guthrie and was married to Clarrinza Canada Guthrie. He was a member of Traynham Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife; one stepdaughter, Sylvia Canada of Nathalie; two stepsons, Linwood Canada of Fredericksburg and Sherman Canada of Nathalie; three stepgrandchildren; one great-step-grandchild; one brother Charlie Guthrie of Texas; and one daughter-in-law, Athea Dunn Canada of Fredericksburg.
Funeral services for Mr. Guthrie will be held September 13 at 3 p.m. at Traynham Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. William Keen officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Clarrinza Canada Guthrie
Clarrinza Canada Guthrie, 68, of 1025 Crossroads Trail, Nathalie died Thursday, December 4, 2003 at her home.
Mrs. Guthrie was born in Halifax County on September 8, 1935, the daughter of Floyd Alexander Canada and Mary Buster Canada and was married to Anthony Lacy Guthrie. She was a member of Ellis Creek Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Sylvia Canada of Nathalie; two sons, Linwood Canada of Fredericksburg and Sherman Canada of Nathalie; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two brothers, James Canada and Johnnie Canada, both of Nathalie; three sisters, Mary Garrett of Clover, Shirley Jones of Skipwith and Connie Jones of Nathalie.
Funeral services for Mrs. Guthrie will be held today, December 8 at 11 a.m. at Ellis Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Rodney Forrest officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Ralph Winfred Guthrie
Ralph Winfred Guthrie, of Brookneal, died Friday, October 31, 2003, at Lynchburg General Hospital.
He was 70.
Mr. Guthrie was born in Halifax County on April 3, 1933, a son of Betty Jones Guthrie of Gladys and the late Brace Thelbert Guthrie and was married to Ruby Martin Guthrie.
He was a member of West End Baptist Church and a retired employee of Lynchburg Foundry.
Survivors include his wife, his mother, one daughter, Vanessa Mann and husband Billy of Phenix, three sons, Winfred Guthrie and wife Cindy and Nathaniel Guthrie and wife Iris, both of Appomattox, and Winston Guthrie and wife Susan of Lynchburg, four bothers, William Guthrie of Johnson Mountain, Tony Guthrie of Gladys, Stafford Guthrie of Brookneal and Stanley Guthrie of Palo Alto, three sisters, Idell Epperson and Hattie Lane, both of Brookneal, and Kathy Mason of Monroe, eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Mr. Guthrie was preceded in death by one sister, Avis Jackson.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today, November 3, at West End Baptist Church with the Rev. Larry Martin officiating. Interment will follow in Catawba Baptist Church Cemetery in Nathalie.
Callie Perkins Hall
Callie Perkins Hall, 91, of 330 Leigh Street, South Boston died December 17, 2003 at her home.
Mrs. Hall was born in Halifax County on February 29, 1912, the daughter of Jim Perkins and Lena Farmer Perkins and was married to Thurman Robert Hall.
Survivors include one daughter, Debra Hall of South Boston; one sister, Emma Fuerstenberg of Halifax; and a number of nieces and nephews.
A graveside service for Mrs. Hall will be held tomorrow, December 20 at 11 a.m. at Oak Ridge Cemetery with the Rev. Don Bryant officiating.
The family will receive friends this evening from 7:00 until 8:00 at Powell Funeral Home.

George Bernard Hamilton
Bishop George Bernard Hamilton, 77, of Atlantic City, N.J., formerly of South Boston, died October 5, 2003 in N.J.
Bishop Hamilton was born in Halifax County on January 9, 1926, the son of the late William Hamilton and Mary Hamilton and was married to the late Alice Harrison Hamilton. He was a WWII Army Veteran, and was pastor of Holy Church of the Living God for over 31 years.
Survivors include one daughter, Ann E. Drake and her husband, Lorenzo, of Cleveland, Ohio; three grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; four sisters, Emily Driggins of Baldwin, N.Y., Anne Nelson of Memphis, Tenn., Vivian Clark and Geneva Coles, both of South Boston; one brother, Levi Hamilton and his wife, Amelia, of South Boston.
Viewing for Bishop Hamilton will be held at the Chapel of Jeffress Funeral Home in South Boston Sunday, October 12 from noon until 2 p.m. Burial will follow at the Pounds Family Cemetery, 1154 Old Grubby Road, South Boston
Beatrice Earl Snow Hamlett
Beatrice Earl Snow Hamlett, 90, of 3081 North Terry's Bridge Road, Halifax died November 20, 2003 at The Woodview.
Mrs. Hamlett was born in Caswell County, N.C. on March 9, 1913, the daughter of Jim Snow and Maggie Thaxton Snow and was married to the late George Lee Hamlett. She was a member of Harmony United Methodist Church.
Survivors include four daughters, Lorene Weaver of South Boston, Ruby Howerton and Joyce Jones, both of Alton, and Shirley Lewis of Halifax; one son, Alton Hamlett of Alton; one sister, Mildred Solomon Daniels of South Boston; three brothers, Franklin Snow of South Boston, Johnny Snow of Burlington, N.C. and Melvin Snow of Hickory, N.C.; 17 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by two sons, George Hamlett Jr. and Ricky Hamlett.
Graveside services will be held tomorrow, November 22 at 10 a.m. at Halifax Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Dennis Ball will officiate.

Elwood Louis Harris
Elwood Louis Harris, 76, of Timberlake, N.C. died July 29, 2003 at his home.
Born in Mecklenburg County, he was the son of Walter Louis and Irene Hall Harris and husband of the late Rosemary Powell Harris.
Mr. Harris retired from Crown Aluminum after 20 years of service. He was a WWII Army Veteran and served as Commander Treasurer and Adjutant of the Person County Chapter of Disabled American Veterans. Mr. Harris was a member of Montwood Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon.
Survivors include his second wife, Lois Loftis Martin Harris; one daughter, Sandra H. Hicks of Hurdle Mills, N.C.; one son, Louis Harris of Roxboro, N.C.; five stepsons, Henry Martin, Jerry Martin, Robert Martin, Ray Martin and Johnny Martin, all of Roxboro; three stepdaughters, Alma Clayton, Ann Solomon and Faye Sullivan, all of Roxboro; one brother, John A. Harris of Roxboro; three sisters, Marion H. Clayton and Agnes H. Dunkley, both of Roxboro, and Maxine H. Moore of Timberlake; one stepbrother, Richard Saunders; five grandchildren, Donna Hicks, Stephen Hicks, Dustin Shotwell, Samantha Shotwell, and Jonathan Shotwell; 21 step-grandchildren; and 21 step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for Mr. Harris will be held today, August 1, at 2 p.m. at Brooks & White Funeral Home Chapel in Roxboro, with the Rev. Ross Thompson officiating. Burial will follow in Asbury United Methodist Church Cemetery in Halifax.

Mary Liza Bates Harris
Mary Liza Bates Harris, 88, of 1024 College Street, South Boston, formerly of Nathalie, died September 17, 2003 in South Boston.
Mrs. Harris was born in Halifax County on February 27, 1915, the daughter of Harry Lee Bates and Sarah Poindexter Bates and was married to David Harris. She was a member of Sunflower Baptist Church.
Survivors include two brothers, Richard W. Bates of Nathalie and Dr. Jesse J. Bates of South Boston; one sister-in-law, Marian W. Bates of Richmond. Mrs. Harris was preceded in death by one son, Rodney Harris; and one brother, H. Louis Bates.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow, September 20 at 3 p.m. at Sunflower Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert Tucker officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Stuart Wayne Harris
Funeral services for Stuart Wayne Harris of Terrys Bridge Road will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel, with burial in Oak
Ridge Cemetery.
The Rev. Dennis Ball will officiate.
Mr. Harris, 54, died Friday, Sept. 26, 2003, at his home in Scottsburg.
He was a truck driver for Arney Lloyd Trucking, and a member of the Baptist faith.
Mr. Harris was born May 3, 1949, a son of the late Wade Harris and Corrie Mae Moss Griffin, and is married to Meria M. Harris.
He is survived by his wife, one stepdaughter, Lisa L. Lowery of Alton and husband Monty, two stepsons, Earl Long of Alton and wife Gail, and Kenneth Eugene Long of Ellettsville, IN., and wife Debra, two half brothers, John Robert Griffin of Halifax and wife Mary Lynn, and Larry Griffin of Acworth, Georgia, and wife Kim, six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and five nieces and nephews.

Robert 'Bob' Mansel Hart Sr.
Robert 'Bob' Mansel Hart Sr., 61, of Clarksville and the husband of Martha Wilkinson Hart, died October 29, 2003 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mr. Hart was born in Ellsworth, Maine and was a graduate of Ellsworth High School. He was a reporter and sports writer for the South Hill Enterprise and prior to that worked with the Mecklenburg Sun. He was a school bus driver for Mecklenburg County for 16 years and a member of Mecklenburg County Life Saving and Rescue Squad for 10 years.
Funeral services for Mr. Hart will be held at 2 p.m. November 2 at Watkins Cooper Lyon Chapel in Clarksville with burial in Oakhurst Cemetery.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Hart is survived by daughters, Elizabeth Contino of Haverbill, Ma. and Margaret Hart of Clarksville; sons, Mark Brown of Greensboro, NC and Robert M. Hart Jr. of Clarksville; brothers, Thomas Hart of Franklin, Me, and John Hart of Hamden, Me; and nine grandchildren.

Mirandie Brankley Herndon, 86, of South Boston died November 17, 2003 at her home.
She was born in Mecklenburg County on March 30, 1917, the daughter of John Whitest Brankley and Olympia Ellington Brankley and was married to Wilford N. Herndon.
Mrs. Herndon was a member of First Baptist Church and the DAR-Berryman Green Chapter.
Survivors include one son, Wilford N. Herndon Jr. and wife, Carolyn, of Charlottesville; one daughter, Sandra Herndon Fuller and husband, Rawley, of Burlington, N.C.; two brothers, John S. Brankley and Harvey C. Brankley, both of Chase City; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for Mrs. Herndon will be held today, November 19 at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Tim Cannon officiating. Burial will take place in Oak Ridge Cemetery.

Eric Alonzo Hester, 44, of Baltimore, Md, formerly of Halifax County, died October 25, 2003 in Maryland.
He was born in Halifax County on September 4, 1959, the son of Robert Allen Hester and Agnes Knight Hester.
Survivors of Mr. Hester include one daughter, Erica Arlena Hester of Baltimore; three brothers, David Hester of Halifax, George Hester of South Boston and Michael Hester of R Raleigh, N.C.; five sisters, Teresa Wilson of Columbus, Ohio, Sylvia McCraw of Norfolk, Rosalind Lacks of Randolph, Vanessa Washington of Randallstown, Md. and Hope Davis of South Boston.
A memorial service for Mr. Hester will be held November 1 at 3 p.m. at the Chapel of Jeffress Funeral Home with Brother Rodney Davis officiating.

Miriam Dougherty Hickey
Miriam Dougherty Hickey, 97, of 1329 Hodges Street, South Boston died December 2, 2003 at Twin Oaks Nursing Home.
Mrs. Hickey was born in Harrisburg, Pa. on March 25, 1906, the daughter of John E. Dougherty and Anna Bessie Foust Dougherty and was married to Dr. James C. Hickey. She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church and graduated from Hood College in 1928.
Survivors include two sons, James C. Hickey of Richmond and Thomas D. Hickey of South Boston; two grandchildren, James C. Hickey III of Jackson, Wyo. and Timothy D. Hickey of Chicago, Ill.; one great-grandson, Averett Wright Hickey of Chicago; and one sister, Elizabeth D. Good of Reading, Pa.
Funeral services for Mrs. Hickey will be held tomorrow, December 4 at 11 a.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church with the Rev. Andrew Bawtree officiating.
A graveside service will take place in Mt. Zion Cemetery in Pottstown, Pa. Friday at 2:30 p.m.

Albert Louis High
Albert Louis High, 76, of 5008 James D. Hagood Hwy., Scottsburg died November 27, 2003 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mr. High was born in Halifax County on December 31, 1926, the son of Daniel Louis High and Georgia Anna Allen High and was married to Georgia Ann Reeves High. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church where he was an Honorary Deacon and former Sunday school teacher. He also was a WWII US Army Veteran.
Survivors include his wife; one sister, Betty Jean High Brewer of Scottsburg. Mr. High was preceded in death by one brother, Willie High.
Funeral services were held November 29 at 2 p.m. at Bethel Baptist Church with the Revs. Anthony Reeves and H.V. Conner officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Leon Thomas Holcombe
Leon Thomas Holcombe, 86, of 1034 Cornelia's Lane, Nathalie died July 28, 2003 at his home.
Mr. Holcombe was born in Greenville, S.C. on July 1, 1917, the son of Loten Lavant Holcombe and Omey Case Holcombe and was married to Jessie Steele Holcombe.
Survivors include one son, Tommy Holcombe of Nathalie; three grandchildren, Christina Kelly of Hillsboro, N.C., Chrystal Jones of South Boston and John Thomas Holcombe of Nathalie; one great-grandchild, Gavin Thomas Holcombe of Nathalie; two brothers, Bill Holcombe of Spartanburg, S.C. and Lavant Holcombe of Seminole, Fla.; and two sisters, Nina Willis of Orlando, Fla. and Elizabeth Coggins of Greenville.

Steven Eugene Hooper
Steven Eugene Hooper, 56, of Burlington, N.C. died September 30, 2003 at the Hospice Home.
Mr. Hooper was born in Alamance County, N.C., the son of Buck and Louise Hooper of Burlington and was married to Kit Hooper. He was employed by Glen Raven Mills for 22 years and Unichem for three years, was a member of Union United Church of Christ, Virgilina.
He was a graduate of UNC at Chapel Hill, N.C., and received a Master's Degree at Elon University.
A funeral service for Mr. Hooper will be held at 1:30 p.m. today, October 3 at Union United Church of Christ with the Rev. Dick Graves of Wake Forest, N.C. officiating. Burial will follow in Virgilina Cemetery.
Survivors other than his wife include two daughters, Mrs. Kirke Hooper Sander and husband, David, of Wake Forest, and Molly Campbell Hooper of Charlottesville; one grandson, Steven Nathaniel Sander; his parents; two sisters, Bette H. Stuckey and husband, David, and Elaine H. Sawyer and husband, Richard, all of Fletcher, N.C.
