Alma Glasscock Kimball
Alma Glasscock Kimball, 78, of Chase City, died Thursday, December 25, 2003, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mrs. Kimball was born on January 15, 1925, the daughter of Theodore Glasscock and Hester Gordon Glasscock.
She was the widow of William “Bill” Adams and Johnny Kimball. She was a lifelong Baptist.
Mrs. Kimball is survived by one son, William J. “Sonny” Adams of Richmond, four daughters, Sylvia A. Lloyd of Buffalo Junction, Brenda F. Hinkle of Boydton, Catherine A. Fitts of Scottsburg and Cynthia A. Young of Littleton, N.C., eleven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two daughters, Audrey Newcomb and Mary Elizabeth Adams, and one son, Dwayne E. Adams.
Graveside services were held on Saturday, December 27, at 2 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Bob Watts officiating.

Hazel Crenshaw Kinsler
Hazel Crenshaw Kinsler, 78, of 6062 Newbill School Road, Clover died October 7, 2003 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mrs. Kinsler was born in Virginia on December 20, 1924, the daughter of the late O.B. Crenshaw, Elnora H. Crenshaw and Catherine H. Rigali. She was married to the late Grady Lester Kinsler; was a member of Hunting Creek Baptist Church; and was a retired employee of Daystrom.
Funeral services will be held at Hunting Creek Baptist Church today, October 10 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Tony Sisk officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Survivors of Mrs. Kinsler include two daughters, Wanda K. Hazelwood and husband, Millard, of Clover, and Nora Throckmorton and husband, Charles, of Scottsburg; one sister, Rose Abele of Amelia; one brother, Frank Rigali of Sandston; two grandsons, Greg and Daryl Hazelwood; two granddaughters, Lesley T. Reaves and Staci T. Elliott; two great-grandsons, Roman Scott and Alden Dean Hazelwood; and one great-granddaughter, Kerrie McKenzie Reaves. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Tony Rigali and Odell Crenshaw; and one sister, Annie Kinsler.

Sydnor Wade Knight
Sydnor Wade Knight, 63, of South Boston, died September 11, 2003, at her residence.
Mrs. Knight was born in Halifax County on November 12, 1939, the daughter of the late Arthur Lee Wade and Myrtle Pointer Wade and was married to George William Knight. She was a former Hardee’s restaurant manager.
Mrs. Knight is survived by her husband; two daughters, Jacqueline D. Ford of South Boston and Tammy D. Humphrey of Oakland, Calif., one son, William T. Ford of South Boston, nine grandchildren, six great grandchildren, two sisters, Jeraline Myers of Schenectady, N.Y., and Marion Hester of South Boston, two brothers Willis L. Wade of Hercules, Calif., and Clifton Wade of San Francisco, Calif., one son-in-law, three brothers-in-law, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Mrs. Knight will be held at the chapel of Jeffress Funeral Home today at noon. Burial will follow in the Oak Ridge Cemetery.
Evan Hardy (Gus) Lacy Jr.
Evan Hardy (Gus) Lacy Jr., age 77, of Fork Union, a former South Boston resident and 1998 inductee into the South Boston-Halifax County Sports Hall of Fame, died December 26, 2003 at University of Virginia Medical Center.
A funeral for Mr. Lacy was held December 28, 2003 at the Fork Union Baptist Church, with burial in the Fork Union Cemetery.
Lacy was born March 25, 1926, in South Boston, the son of Camila Wimbish Lacy and Evan Hardy Lacy, both of whom preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Barbara Bransford Lacy.
Survivors include his two sons, Evan Hardy Lacy III (Susan), and Hunter Bransford Lacy (Wendy) and Sonny Randle.
He is also survived by a brother, Louis Wimbish Lacy, and three grandchildren, Russell Lacy, Alicia Lacy and Jennifer Pate.
Mr. Lacy graduated from C.H. Friend High School in South Boston in 1943 and served in the United States Navy in the South Pacific during World War II.
He graduated from the University of North Carolina with a Bachelor’s Degree in 1948 and from the University of Virginia with a Master’s Degree in Education in 1968.
He was a 1944 letterman in football at UNC.
A member of the Fork Union Baptist Church, and a Deacon since 1952, Lacy was on the staff of Fork Union Military Academy from 1948-1992.
Lacy taught English from 1948 until 1969, after which he was Director of Admissions until his retirement. He also served as the Director of Development and Director of Alumni Affairs.
Known as Coach Lacy to many of the cadets, he was assistant football coach from 1948-1956, head track coach from 1949-1963, and cross country coach from 1949-1962.
He was also Assistant Athletic Director to coach Rosie Thomas from 1955-1965.
FUMA track teams coached by Lacy won state track championships in 1957, 1960 and 1963.
The track at FUMA was named for him several years ago and the Gus Lacy Track Classic is held every spring at FUMA.
Mr. Lacy served on the Fluvanna County School Board from 1964-1972 and was chairman from 1968-1972.
He served as the President of the Virginia School Boards Association from 1970-1971.
Mr. Lacy officiated basketball and football on the high school level from 1951-1978 and was Commissioner of the Piedmont Basketball Officials Association from 1955-1978.
He was the director of the Sonny Randle Football Camp from 1963-1975.

Bernice Ann Motley Lacks
Bernice Ann Motley Lacks, 81, of 1033 Mosley Ferry Rd., Clover, died July 2, 2003 at Twin Oaks Convalescent Home.
Mrs. Lacks was born in Pittsylvania County on October 4, 1921, the daughter of the late U.T. Motley and Lilly Garner Motley and was married to the late Thomas Wilson Lacks Sr. She was a member of Clover Baptist Church where she was the choir director and organist. Mrs. Lacks was a retired salesperson with Leggett Department Store.
Survivors include one daughter, Cheryl Pace of Hockessin, Del.; one son, Thomas Wilson Lacks Jr. and his wife, Cathy, of Hayes, N.C.; two brothers, Julian Motley of Wake Forest, N.C. and U.T. Motley of Danville; two sisters, Linwood M. Snead of Danville and Janell M. Robbins of Martinsville; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by one sister, Teresa M. Critz; and one brother, Gerald Motley.
Funeral services for Mrs. Lacks will be held at Clover Baptist Church tomorrow, July 5 at 2 p.m. with the Revs. Tom Walker and Julian Motley officiating. Burial will follow in Clover Cemetery.
The family will receive friends this evening between 7:00 and 8:30 at Clover Baptist Church, and other times at the home.

Frank Lacks Sr.
Mr. Frank Lacks Sr., 72, of Mt. Laurel Road, Clover, died Tuesday, December 23, 2003, at his residence.
He was born in Halifax County on October 10, 1931, a son of the late James Lacks and Iola Moseley Lacks, and was married to Esther Wright Lacks.
Mr. Lacks was a member of St. Matthew Baptist Church. He was a retired longshoreman.
He is survived by his wife, Esther Lacks, one daughter, Mrs. Joann Darby of Orlando, Fla., one son, Frank Lacks Jr. of Ludwigsburg, Germany, two sisters, Mrs. Janie Boulware and Mrs. Clarise Foster, both of Clover, one brother, Josephus Lacks of Baltimore, one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Uli Lacks, four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, one godson, Robert Lee Knight of Virginia Beach, and a host of relatives and friends.
A funeral service for Mr. Lacks was held Sunday, Dec. 28, at St. Matthew Baptist Church with the Rev. Whitfield Scott officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Frances Oliver Lacks
Frances Oliver Lacks, 82, of Randolph died Wednesday, November 26, 2003, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mrs. Lacks was born in California on December 8, 1920, the daughter of the late Burton Oliver and Lucille Nbeshakai Oliver and was married to the late Peter Lacks Jr.
Mrs. Oliver is survived by two sons, Gerald L. Lacks and Nathaniel M. Lacks, both of Randolph, one brother, Ambrose Oliver of Albuquerque, N. Mex., two daughters-in-law, one sister-in-law, nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Robert E. Lacks and James D. Lacks.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 2, at 1 p.m. in the Chapel of Jeffress Funeral Home with Brother Phillip Lewis officiating.
Burial will follow in the Greater Solid Rock Full Gospel Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friend at the residence, 5122 Black Walnut Road, Randolph.
Heno Cornelius Lacks Jr.
Heno Cornelius Lacks Jr., 66, of 1074 East Oak Hill Drive, Halifax died October 30, 2003 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mr. Lacks was born in Charlotte County on November 2, 1936, the son of Heno Cornelius Lacks Sr. and Dorothy Powell Lacks.
Survivors include three sisters, Evelyn Lacks and Betty Bailey, both of Kittrell, N.C., and Agnes Harris of Henderson, N.C.; his mother of Halifax; and a number or nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Mr. Lacks were held November 1 at 2 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Terry Scearce and Rudolph Jacobs officiating. Burial followed in Halifax Memorial Gardens.
Larvee Cassada Lacks
A funeral service for Mrs. Larvee Nina Cassada Lacks was held Saturday, September 20, 2003, at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel in South Boston, with burial at the Lacks Family Cemetery off of Black Walnut Road.
The Rev. Ronnie Talley officiated.
Mrs. Lacks, 58, a homemaker, died Thursday at Halifax Regional Hospital.
She was born January 19, 1945 in Halifax County.
Mrs. Lacks is survived by her husband, Bobby G. Lacks of Randolph; a son,
Stacy Lacks, also of Randolph; two sisters, Carolyn Cassada of Red Oak and Marilyn Terriaght of Hampton; two brothers, Olivine Cassada of Red Oak and Ronald Cassada of Chase City.
Other survivors include two grandsons, Brandon Lacks and Jarred Lacks, two granddaughters, Heather Lacks and Autumn Lacks.
Mrs. Lacks was predeceased by her father and mother, Noel and Ruby Cassada, two sons, Bobby Bret Lacks and Rocky Lane Lacks, and one brother, Waddel Cassada.
Lennis Edward Lacks
Lennis Edward Lacks, 73, of 5097 Black Walnut Road, Randolph died August 6, 2003 at his home.
He was born in Halifax County on January 9, 1930, the son of Arthur Jackson Lacks and Ida Williams Lacks and was married to Margaret Duffey Lacks. Mr. Lacks was a member of Mt. Laurel United Methodist Church.
His survivors include his wife; two sons, Keith Edward Lacks and Jeffrey Miles Lacks, both of Randolph; two sisters, Blanche Duffer of Burlington, N.C. and Mary Brinn of Randolph; and two grandchildren, Dana and J.J. Lacks, both of Randolph.
Graveside services for Mr. Lacks will be held today, August 8 at Mount Laurel United Methodist Church Cemetery at 2 p.m. The Rev. Don Pizzeck will officiate.

Louis Hardwell Lacks Jr.
Louis Hardwell Lacks Jr., 78, of 1272 Blounts Crossing Trail, Clover died October 8, 2003 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mr. Lacks was born in Halifax County on February 19, 1925, the son of the late Louis Hardwell Lacks Sr. and Winnie Blackstock Lacks, and was married to Gladys Duffey Lacks. He was a member of Mt. Laurel United Methodist Church and was an Army Veteran of WWII.
Survivors include his wife; four daughters, Debbie Thompson and husband, Sam, of Halifax, and Jill Wilmouth and husband, Andy, of Scottsburg, Carol Matthews of Belmont, N.C., and Janice Guill and husband, Nelson, of Clover; one son, Louis 'Billy' Hardwell Lacks III and wife, Jane, of Clover; five grandsons and one granddaughter; one brother, Howard W. Lacks of Halifax; and two sisters, Catherine Throckmorton of Sandston and Edith Simbles of Austin, Texas.
Funeral services for Mr. Lacks will be held tomorrow, October 11 at 2 p.m. at Mt. Laurel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Don Pizzeck officiating.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Powell Funeral Home this evening, October 10 from 7:00 until 8:30, and other times at the home.

Mary Newcomb Lacks
Mary Newcomb Lacks, 68, of Keysville died December 12, 2003.
Mrs. Lacks was a CNA with Bednar's Rest Home. Her survivors include three daughters, Margaret 'Beth' Roop of Colonial Heights, Joan Martin of Scottsburg, and Ann Moorefield of South Boston; two sons, Leon Lacks of Shacklefords and Mark Lacks of Keysville; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Joe Newcomb of Drakes Branch and John Newcomb of Scottsburg.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. December 15 at Wood Funeral Service in Chase City. The Rev. Dewey Baker conducted the service. Burial followed in Mt. Laurel United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Mell J. Lacy Jr.
Mell J. Lacy Jr. died July 8, 2003 in Oklahoma City, Okla.
A native of Halifax County, he attended Virginia Military Institute. Mr. Lacy served as a Judge Advocate officer in the Air Force, retiring in 1990 with the rank of colonel.
Survivors include his wife, Janice, of the home; one daughter, Meredith Williamson and her husband, David, and three grandchildren, Hannah, Rebekah, and Daniel Williamson.
A memorial service was held at 10:30 a.m. July 12 at North Colonial Chapel of Vondel L. Smith & Son Mortuary. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery in the spring.

Sarah Katherine Harris Lamb
Sarah Katherine Harris Lamb, 88, of the 4000 block of Dock Landing Road, Chesapeake died November 22, 2003 in a Portsmouth hospital.
Mrs. Lamb was born on February 2, 1915, in Morehead City, N.C. to the late Nora Styron Harris and the Rev. Edwin R. Harris. She grew up in the Virgilina/Aarons Creek area of Virginia and later attended Wingate College where she served as class agent for the Class of 1936. She also attended Old Dominion University and was a third grade teacher in the Norfolk County and Portsmouth public school systems.
As a descendent of the settlers on Portsmouth Island, N.C., she enjoyed the Outer Banks and during her retirement years, resided mostly in Nags Head, where she was an active member of the Nags Head Baptist Church and the Outer Banks Senior Chorus at the Baum Center.
Mrs. Lamb was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel H. Lamb. She is survived by her daughter, Martha Lamb Hoban of St. Paul, Minn.; a son, Samuel H. Lamb II and his wife, Astrid Heinrich-Lamb, of Virginia Beach; five grandchildren, Andrea Krage Minear and her husband, Mike, Michael Krage and his wife, Liz, Kathleen Krage Rehberg, Sean Hoban Clark and her husband, Will, and Oliver Sebastian Lamb; her great-grandchildren, Matthew Minear, Jason Krage, Amanda Krage, Liam Clark, Clint Minear, Nicole Minear White and her husband, Tommy, and their daughter Isabella Ann White.
A memorial service, followed by a reception, was held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 6, at Nags Head Baptist Church. Pastor Rick Lawrenson officiated.
