Magdalene Wilkins Reese

Magdalene Wilkins Reese, 86, of South Boston died May 30, 2003 at Duke Hospital. She lived at Boston Commons and was a member of Union United Church of Christ in Virgilina.

Mrs. Reese was born and reared in Williamson, WVa. and was the daughter of the late Jack and Helen McGonnell Wilkins. She was preceded in death by her husband, William A. Reese Jr.

A graveside service will be held July 17 at 11 a.m. at Virgilina Cemetery in Virgilina.

Mrs. Reese is survived by three nephews, Charles Thomas Wayt of Las Vegas, Nev., Harold E. ‘Pete’ Wayt of Jacksonville, Fla., and William R. Wilkins of Virgilina; one niece, Mary Helen Wilkins Gravitt, also of Virgilina. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Jerome, Edward and Cecil Wilkins; and one sister, Katherine Wayt.

Friends will be received from 12-9 p.m. July 16 at the home of Mary Helen Gravitt, 1021 Seventh Street, Virgilina.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Virgilina Woman’s Club Cemetery Fund, c/o Mary Helen Gravitt or Virginia B. Bailey, P.O. Box 206, Virgilina, 24598.

Mary Lessie Reid

Mary Lessie Reid, 93, of Halifax, formerly of New York, died January 7, 2003 at The Woodview.

Ms. Reid was born in Halifax County on March 10, 1910, the daughter of Phenious Reid and Alice Sydnor Reid. She was a member of Ellis Creek Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sisters-in-law, Mary Reid of Baltimore and Edmonia Frazier of Clover.

Funeral services for Ms. Reid will be held tomorrow, January 10 at 11 a.m. at Crawford House Chapel in Halifax with the Rev. Sandy Palmer officiating.
Burial will follow at Ellis Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the service.

Lonie Wilkins Rice

Lonie Wilkins Rice, 88, of Clarksville, widow of Robert Kent Rice Sr., died July 20, 2003.

She was a homemaker and a member of Averett Baptist Church.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. July 22 at Watkins Cooper Lyon funeral Chapel with burial in the family cemetery in Nelson.

Mrs. Rice is survived by two daughters, Betsy Loftis of Nelson and Judith Whitlow of Buffalo Junction; one son, Robert Kent Rice Jr. of Nelson.

Anne Bernice Richardson

Anne Bernice Richardson, 85, of 6105 Philpott Road, South Boston died August 10, 2003 at Twin Oaks Convalescent Home.

Miss Richardson was born in Halifax County on September 23, 1917, the daughter of the late Ossie Richardson and Hannah Brooks Richardson. She was a member of Miller Memorial Baptist Church in Philadelphia, Pa. and also of Cross Road Baptist Church. She was a retired employee of the Veterans Administration.

Survivors include her caretaker, Sharon Marie Harris; her nephews and nieces; John Harris of south Boston, Ossie Harris of South Boston, Branch Coleman of Hollywood, Md. and Brenda Lee Chandler of Greensboro, N.C. Miss Richardson was also preceded in death by a sister, Alibeth Richardson.
Graveside services will be held August 14 at 11 a.m. at Cross Road Baptist Church with the Rev. Harvey Bigelow officiating.

The family is receiving friends at the home.

Johnnie Richardson

Johnnie Richardson, 73, of 1191 Waltman Trail, Vernon Hill died November 24, 2003 at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Mr. Richardson was born in Halifax County on March 20, 1930, the son of Willie Richardson and Classy Winbush Richardson and was married to Betty Hankins Richardson. He was a member of Mountain Grove Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife; four daughters, Annabell Winbush of Pinehurst, N.C., Emma Mitchell of Halifax, Bessie Fox of Sacramento, Calif. and Theresa Winbush of Danville; eight sons, Johnnie Richardson Jr. of Danville, Moses T. Richardson of Laurel Grove, Willie E. Richardson of Keeling, Johnnie Wayne Giggetts of Albany, N.Y., John Arthur Giggetts of Halifax Grover Giggetts of S.C., Marvin Giggetts of Fredricksburg, and Clarence Crews of Washington, D.C.; 33 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Hattie Brown of Baltimore, Md. and Dora Jackson of Chicago, Ill.; one brother, Grover Richardson of Chicago; three stepchildren, Brenda Roberts of South Boston, Sheila Giggetts of Albany and Robert Giggetts of Seneca Falls, N.Y.

Mr. Richardson was preceded in death by one brother, Charlie Richardson.

Funeral services will be held tomorrow, November 29 at 11 a.m. at Mountain Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Arthur Crews officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the Chapel of Jeffress Funeral Home this evening, November 28 from 6:00 until 7:00, and other times at the home.

Michael Sanford Richardson

Michael Sanford Richardson, 42, of 1013 Birch Trail, Nathalie died September 30, 2003 in South Boston.

Mr. Richardson was born in South Boston on February 20, 1961, the son of Maxine Anderson Richardson and the late Sanford Garfield Richardson. He was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include one son, David Allen Richardson of South Boston; one brother, Mark W. Richardson of Clarksville; one sister, Wanda Gayle R. Hancock of South Boston and two grandchildren. Mr. Richardson was preceded in death by one sister, Kathy Dale Richardson.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. today, October 3 at Henderson Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Rodney Barwick.

Annie Jeffress Rickman

Annie Jeffress Rickman, 93, of Clover died September 18, 2003 at Berry Hill Nursing Home.

Miss Rickman was born in Halifax County on December 22, 1909, the daughter of James Thomas Rickman and Lottie Lacks Rickman. She was a member of Mt. Laurel United methodist Church where she was the oldest living member. She was a member of the choir and taught Sunday School.

Miss Rickman taught second grade in the Halifax County school System for 43 years teaching at Clays Mill, Bethel, Mt. Laurel, Red Level, and Scottsburg.

Survivors include two sisters, Agnes Dollaye of Chester and Alice Hardie of Lexington, Ky.; two brothers, Isaac 'Ike' Rickman and wife, Frances, of Richmond, and Irvin Rickman and wife, Louise, of Mechanicsville; another sister-in-law, Mildred Rickman of Clover. She was preceded in death by a brother, James Thomas Rickman Jr.

Funeral services for Miss Rickman will be held tomorrow, September 20 at 2 p.m. at Mt. Laurel United Methodist church with the Revs. Wayne Rickman and Don Pizzeck officiating. Burial will take place in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Powell Funeral Home this evening from 6:00 until 8:30.

William Thornton 'Billy' Ridgeway

William Thornton 'Billy' Ridgeway, 73, of 1221 Perth Road, Nathalie died October 9, 2003 at his home. He was the husband of Irene Tuggle Ridgeway.

Mr. Ridgeway was born in Halifax County on May 17, 1930, the son of the late John Ferris Ridgeway Sr. and Mattie Bomar Ridgeway. He was a member of Childrey Baptist Church, a Navy Veteran of the Korean Conflict and retired mechanic for Adams Lumber Company.

In addition to his wife, survivors include one son, Ricky T. Ridgeway and wife, Renee, of Nathalie; two grandchildren, W. Tanner and Reagan Ridgeway of Nathalie; one step-grandson, Bruce Anderson of South Boston; three sisters, Catherine Ridgeway, Roberta R. Booker and Jean Ridgeway, all of Nathalie.
He was preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters.

A funeral service for Mr. Ridgeway was held October 12 at 2:30 p.m. at Childrey Baptist Church by the Rev. Rodney Barwick. Burial followed in Childrey Baptist Church Cemetery.

Those wishing to give memorials are asked to consider Brookneal Rescue Squad or Halifax Regional Hospice.

Sylvia Robertson Roark

Mrs. Sylvia Robertson Roark of Danville, formerly of Halifax County, died September 6, 2003 at Roman Eagle Nursing Home.

Mrs. Roark was 88-years-old at the time of her death.

Mrs. Sylvia Robertson Roark was born October 14, 1914 in Crystal, West Virginia, the daughter of Fletcher Conrad Robertson and Cara Booth Robertson.

She was married to Silas Herman Roark Sr. and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Millstone.

Mrs. Roark is survived by two sons, Silas Herman "Buddy" Roark Jr., of Chatham, and James Fletcher Roark and wife Lynda of Stuarts Draft; three daughters, Patricia Roark Reynolds and husband Tom of Harrisonburg, Reita Roark Bowles and husband George Everett of Danville, and Brenda Roark Guill of Hillsboro, N.C.; 11 grandchildren; and 20 great grandchildren.

Mrs. Roark was preceded in death by her husband, Silas Herman Roark Sr., and one grandson, Silas Herman "Si" Roark III.

Funeral services for Mrs. Sylvia Robertson Roark will be held tomorrow, September 9, at 2 p.m., at First Baptist Church of Millstone, with the Rev. Dr. Tom Reynolds and the Rev. Jeff Bedwell conducting the service.
Burial will take place in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Powell Funeral Home today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and other times at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Reita and George Everett Bowles, 3733 Mount Cross Road, Danville.

John Herbert Robbins Sr.

John Herbert Robbins Sr., 87, of 1736 Haskins Street, South Boston died October 14, 2003 at The Woodview.

Mr. Robbins was born in Whiteville, N.C. on April 18, 1916, the son of the late Julias Whitfield Lenzie Robbins and Etta Mae McNeil Robbins and was married to Margaret Needham Robbins. He was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church, Scottish Rite Mason with Morotock Masonic Lodge 210 Danville, American Legion Post 8, World War II Army Veteran and a Virginia Army National Guardsman with 39 years of service and with rank of Chief Warrant Officer.

Survivors of Mr. Robbins include his wife of South Boston; two daughters, Anne R. Bramlitt of South Boston and Karen R. Oliver of Chelmsford, Mass.; one son, John Herbert 'Robyn' Robbins Jr. of Clover; one sister, Louise R. Wester of Laurinburg, N.C.; six grandchildren, Margaret Anne Chappell of Portsmouth, Ian Robbins of Blacksburg, Aimee' Robbins of Radford, Austin and Alex Robbins, both of Clover, and Jacob Oliver of Albany, N.Y. Mr. Robbins was preceded in death by one sister, Retha Sasser; and four brothers, Carl, Earl, Howard and Edward Robbins.

Funeral services will be held October 17 at 2 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Doug Martin and J.C. Raper officiating. Eulogy will be by Major General (Ret.) Carroll Thackston. Burial will take place in Halifax Memorial Gardens with Masonic and Military Rites.

The family will receive friends at Powell Funeral Home Thursday evening from 7:00 until 8:30, and other times at the home.

Vanessia Jennings Roberts

Vanessia Jennings Roberts, 89, of South Boston, died Friday, December 26, 2003, at The Woodview.

She was born in Halifax County on April 30, 1914, the daughter of James Thomas Jennings and Hattie H. Epps Jennings.

Mrs. Roberts was a member of First Baptist Church of South Boston and was a retired sales clerk at Leggett’s Department Store.

She is survived by two daughters, Freda R. Hacker of Colonial Heights and Carolyn R. Glass of Halifax, one sister, Inez J. Parker of South Boston, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Roberts was preceded in death by one daughter, Gloria Marie Roberts, and one grandson, James H. Glass, Jr.

Funeral services will be held today, December 29, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church in South Boston.

Burial will follow in the Halifax Baptist Church Cemetery.

Joan Conner Sadler

Joan Conner Sadler, 68, of 1906 Norwood Avenue, South Boston died October 30, 2003 at Duke University Medical Center.

Mrs. Sadler was born in Halifax County on September 16, 1935, the daughter of Raymond M. Conner and Elizabeth Rickmon Conner and was married to Charles G. Sadler. She was a member of Ash Avenue Baptist Church and worked for 44 years as chief program technician with the ASCS Office.

Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Lynn S. McKinney and husband, Johnny, of Halifax and Patricia S. Chappell and husband, Kelly, of Halifax; one granddaughter, Sarah Laughorn of Halifax; three grandsons, Johnny and Jared McKinney and Lance Chappell, all of Halifax; one brother, Raymond M. Conner Jr. of South Boston; and one sister, Ann c. Buchanan of Ark.

Funeral services for Mrs. Sadler were held November 2 at 4 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. John Eure officiating. Burial followed in Halifax Memorial Gardens.

Bryan Jennings Sanford

Funeral services for Mr. Bryan Jennings Sanford will be held Tuesday, August 19, 2003, at 1 p.m. at the Sunflower Baptist Church.

The Rev. Robert Tucker will officiate.

Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military honors.

Mr. Sanford died at his residence at the age of 56.

He was born in Halifax County on April 28, 1947, to the late Governor Sanford and the late Virginia Jennings Sanford.

Mr. Sanford was married to Lizzie Baker Sanford and was a member of the Sunflower Baptist Church.

He was a retired Master Sergeant in the United States Air Force.

Mr. Sanford is survived by his wife, one sister, Carolyn Davis of South Boston, one brother, Lorenzo Sanford of Danville, two step-daughters, Gwendlyn D. Hunters of Syracuse, N.Y. and Doretta Clark of Houston, Tx., three step-grandchildren, two brothers-in-law, five sisters-in-law and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Edgar Allen Satterfield

Edgar Allen Satterfield, 70, of 105 Oak Court, South Boston, died September 8, 2003 at his home.

Mr. Satterfield was born in Halifax County on September 9, 1932, the son of William Walter Satterfield and Maggie Mae Jones Satterfield. He was a member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church and was an Army Veteran

Survivors of Mr. Satterfield include one daughter, Mary Beth S. Thompson of Buffalo Junction; one son, Brent Satterfield and wife, Antoinette, of South Boston; three sisters, Helen S. Hayes of South Boston, Velvie S. Gholston and Bettie S. Seamster, both of Richmond; one brother, W.B. 'Barkley' Satterfield of LaGrange, N.C.; three grandchildren, Kelsey Thompson of Buffalo Junction, Hannah Satterfield of Carrboro, N.C. and Kevin Brent Satterfield and wife, Jamie, of South Boston. Mr. Satterfield was preceded in death by four sisters, Effie S. Caldwell, Frances S. Hastings, Pauline S. Thompson and Bernice 'Dillie' Evans; six brothers, william E. Jessie Hugh, Thomas Howard, John Robert, Paul Irvin and Marvin Morell 'Mutt' Satterfield.
Graveside services will be held today, September 10, at Liberty United Church of Christ Cemetery at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Melvin Bradshaw officiating.

Mildred McDowell Satterfield

Mildred McDowell Satterfield, 79, of 1076 Cowford Road, Halifax died October 7, 2003 at Duke University Medical Center.

Mrs. Satterfield was born in Pittsylvania County on February 12, 1924, the daughter of the late Willard L. McDowell and Pearl Henry McDowell and was married to Raymond Bruce Satterfield. She was a member of Scottsburg United Methodist Church, WOW #127; and Halifax Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary.

Survivors of Mrs. Satterfield include two daughters, Brenda S. Burgess Wright of Winter Haven, Fla., and Carolyn S. Talley of Oxford, N.C.; one son, Richard Wayne Satterfield of Winter Haven; five brothers, Wallace McDowell of Charlottesville, Leroy McDowell of Niceville, Fla., Willie Norman McDowell of Pinellas Park, Fla., Ray D. McDowell of Atlanta, Ga. and Warren McDowell of Ringgold; four grandchildren, Lindy Satterfield and Adrienne Burgess, both of Halifax, Nicole and Jason Talley, both of Oxford; one great-grandchild, Miranda Satterfield of Halifax; and one step great-grandchild, Robert McDonald Jr., of Halifax.

Funeral services for Mrs. Satterfield will be held October 10, 2003 at 3 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Mt. Vernon Baptist Church Cemetery with WOW Rites.

The family will receive friends at Powell Funeral Home Thursday evening from 7:00 until 8:30, and other times at the home.

Ronald Allen Satterfield

Ronald Allen Satterfield, 59, of 1061 Bass Trail, South Boston died October 5, 2003 at his home.

He was born in South Boston on April 11, 1944, the son of the late Herbert Allen Satterfield and Boneze Wall Satterfield Walton, and was married to Barbara Louise Lipscomb Satterfield.

Survivors of Mr. Satterfield include his wife; one daughter, Lisa S. Clardy and husband, Roger, of Alton; two grandchildren, Dinetta and Mykala Clardy, both of Alton; two sisters, Barbara Ann Covington of South Boston and Susan Cavanaugh of Walterboro, S.C.; one brother, David Satterfield of Alton; his mother of South Boston; and three devoted friends, Maggie, Douglas and Julia Oliver, all of Alton.

Funeral services for Mr. Satterfield will be held today, October 8 at 11 a.m. at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Rudolph Jacobs officiating. Burial will take place in Mt. Carmel Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
