Carlton F. Saunders of Richmond, died September 15, 2003 at his home.
He was the son of the late Clarence and Edna Saunders and was married to Dianne Plumbo Saunders.
Survivors include his wife; three children, Margaret Wagenknecht and her husband, George, Sherrie Houser and husband, Eric, and Michael Saunders and wife, Amie; four grandchildren, Miranda Gayle Winn, Diana Jean Wagenknecht, Emily Houser and Cole Saunders; two brothers, Henry L. Saunders of Midlothian and Clinton Ray Saunders of Richmond; four sisters, Margaret Sims, Shirley Reeson and Dorothy Overacre, all of Richmond, and Brenda Anderson of Halifax.
Funeral services for Mr. Saunders will be held at 2 p.m. today, September 17, at Bliley's Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Dale Memorial Cemetery.
Ty’Keria LaShell Saunders
Infant Ty'Keria LaShell Saunders, 3 months old, of 1050 Bane Street, South Boston died December 20, 2003 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
She was born in South Boston on September 11, 2003, the daughter of LaTroy Saunders and LaToya Birch.
Survivors include her parents; one sister, Marquasia of South Boston; her twin brother, Ty'Shaun Saunders of South Boston; maternal grandparents, Wayne Fallen and Wanda Fallen of South Boston; Bobby Birch and Eurline Birch of South Boston; great-grandmothers, Ada Barksdale of Halifax, Elizabeth Birth of South Boston and Mattie Williams of Hartford, Ct.
Funeral services for Infant Saunders will be held today, December 24 at 11 a.m. at Traynham Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. William Keen officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Verta Palmer Scott
Verta Palmer Scott, 72, of South Boston, died Thursday, November 6, 2003, at Duke University Medical Center.
She was born in Halifax County on May 10,1931, a daughter of the late Lottie Palmer Logan and was married to the late Tom C. Scott. She was a member of the Five Forks Baptist Church.
Mrs. Scott is survived by four daughters, Mary C. Jackson of Nathalie, Delois Brown of Winstom Salem, Janice Claiborne of Melborne, Fla., and Barbara C. Brame of Clinton, Md., four sons, Jesse Claiborne, Jr. of San Antonio, Wayne L. Claiborne and Charles E. Claiborne, both of Newport News, and Dwight Scott of Scottsburg, 12 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, three sons-in-law, three daughters-in-law and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, including a devoted friend, James Drummond.
Funeral services for Mrs. Scott will be held today, November 10, at 1 p.m. at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Moses Dixon officiating.
Burial will follow in the Five Forks Baptist Church Cemetery.

Elvin Curtis Seamster Jr.
Elvin Curtis Seamster Jr., 68, of 725 Riely Avenue, South Boston died December 29, 2003 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mr. Seamster was born in Halifax County on October 4, 1935, the son of Elvin Curtis Seamster Sr. and Nannie Conner Seamster and was married to Edith Estes Seamster. He was a retired police officer with the Town of South Boston and was a member of Ash Avenue Baptist Church.
Survivors include a stepdaughter, Teresa Long Milton of Glen Rose, Texas; one stepson, Timmy Long of Fla.; three sisters, Mildred S. Moore of Appomattox, Virginia S. Ledbetter and Joyce S. Dawson, both of Halifax; two brothers, Frank L. Seamster of Alton and Elijah 'Butch' Seamster of Nathalie; and two stepgrandchildren. Mr. Seamster was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Henry J. Seamster.
A funeral service will be held today, December 31 at 2 p.m. at Ash Avenue Baptist Church with the Rev. John Eure officiating. Burial will follow in Halifax Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the church for one hour prior to the service and other times at the home.

Sylvester Faye Seate
Sylvester Faye Seate, 75, of Nelson died July 14, 2003. He was the widower of Narvis Puryear Seate.
Mr. Seate was a graduate of Oak Hill High School, a Veteran of the U.S. Air Force, served as a deacon of Nelson Baptist Church, and retired from Burlington Industries, Inc. after 45 years of service.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today, July 16, at Nelson Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery.
Survivors of Mr. Seate include two sons and daughters-in-law, Jackie S. and Sandra Seate of Clarksville and Frederick 'Larry' and Donna Seate of Virgilina; one daughter and son-in-law, Anna and Derwood Hall of Nelson; one brother, Worth Seate of Charlotte, N.C.; two sisters, Maxine Jackson of Skipwith and Lois Clayton of Roxboro, N.C.; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and close friends Paul Fuller and Roy Sandifer.
Charlie Harrison Self
Charlie Harrison Self, 88, of Roxboro, N.C. died December 5, 2003 at Roxboro Nursing Center.
Mr. Self was born in Chase City the son of Garfield and Sarah Ellen Hoyle Self. He was retired from the City of Roxboro and was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Julia Self; one son, C.G. Self and wife, Marion, of Roxboro; four grandchildren, Cathy Riggs, Greg Self, Judy Bledsoe and Michael Jones; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. December 7 at Brooks & White Chapel in Roxboro by the Rev. Ross Thompson. Burial took place in Burchwood Cemetery.

Leanna Brown Simmons
Leanna Brown Simmons, 97, of 1028 Gabrieline Lane, Crystal Hill died December 26, 2003 at her home.
Mrs. Simmons was born in Halifax County on October 15, 1906, the daughter of Bennie Brown and Ella Wheeler Brown and was married to Jacob Richardson Simmons. She was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church.
Survivors include four daughters, Irene Jennings of Nathalie, Kathleen Bailey of Crystal Hill, Gracie Tiller of Baltimore, Md. and Rose Cherry of New York; four sons, Jacob R. Simmons, Leroy Simmons and Leon Simmons, all of New York and Clinton Simmons of Albany, N.Y.; 39 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; four sisters, Josephine Diallo, Eva Collins, Madeline Wolfe and Carole Mjaanes, all of Nathalie.
A funeral service for Mrs. Simmons will be held today, December 31 at 1 p.m. at Ellis Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Rodney Forrest officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Geraldine Smith
A funeral service for Mrs. Geraldine Waddell Smith was held Sunday, September 21, 2003, at Dan River Baptist Church, with burial in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Smith, 62, died Thursday at Duke University Hospital.
She was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on Sept. 12, 1941, a daughter of James Z. Waddell Sr. and Helen Kessler Waddell and was married to Oliver Blane Smith.
She was a member of the Dan River Baptist Church and was retired from Wachovia Bank.
Mrs. Smith is survived by her husband, Oliver Blane Smith of Highland Hills Drive, Halifax; two daughters, Kimberly Ann Koenig of Virginia Beach and Kellie Farrar Wilkins of Alton; two sons, Jeffrey Wayne Farrar of Culpeper and Adam Blane Smith of Halifax; and three stepsons, Dr. Carrington Duane Smith of Santa Barbara, California, Jeffrey Dale Smith of Halifax and Gerald Vann Smith of South Boston.
Other survivors include one sister, Shirley Snyder of French Creek, West Virginia, one foster sister, Dorothy Green of Greensboro, N.C., and eight grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, James Richard Farrar, and by one brother, James Z. Waddell Jr.

Mary Gates Snead
Mary Gates Snead of Portsmouth, the widow of E. Hobson Snead, died October 5, 2003 in Portsmouth. She was the daughter of the late Harry B. and Camilla Dorsey gates.
Mrs. Snead, a native of South Boston, and a resident of Portsmouth since 1936, was a retired supervisor from the office of the Commissioner of Revenue of the City of Portsmouth. She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church; Portsmouth General Hospital Auxiliary; Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Museum; Community Concert Association; and the Beazley Center.
She is survived by three nephews, R. Bailey Gates of LaGrange, N.C., Harry G. Gates II of Goldsboro, N.C., and Dr. Robert H.E. Gates Jr. of Colorado Springs, Col.
A funeral service for Mrs. Snead will be held at 10 a.m. October 10 in St. John's Episcopal Church in Portsmouth by the Rev. Ronald E. Greiser Jr. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery, South Boston at 3 p.m.

Beverly Craddock Shields Jr.
Beverly Craddock Shields Jr., 93, of Phenix died October 24, 2003 in Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Doris St. John Shields.
Born in Pittsylvania County January 5, 1910, he was a son of the late Beverly Craddock Shields Sr. and Mervye Hart Shields. Mr. Shields was a member of Midway Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife he is survived by two sons and their wives, Beverly Craddock Shields III and Jackie, of Halifax and M. Reid Shields and Margaret, of Appomattox; two grandchildren; one step-grandchild; two great-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren. Mr. Shields was preceded in death by two sisters and a brother, Annie Elizabeth Shields, Vaden C. Shields and Evelyn Shields Hamlett.

Patricia Wilborne 'Pat' Siddle, 50, of Keeling died October 8, 2003 at her home.
Mrs. Siddle was born in South Boston on February 28, 1953, the daughter of the late Jefferson Davis Wilborne Jr. and Lillie Mae Wilborne Wilborne and was married to Richard Thomas Siddle.
She was a member of North Main Baptist Church; the Racking Horse Association; the Tennessee Walking Horse Association; the Spotted Saddle Horse Association; and worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse at Riverside Health Care Center.
Survivors of Mrs. Siddle include her husband of the home; one son, William Travis Hite of Roanoke; one daughter, Tina Lynn McFarling of Danville; two stepdaughters, Frances Marie Siddle of Greensboro, N.C. and Joyce Charlene Wilson of Ringgold; one sister, Linda Gail Conner of South Boston; four brothers, Michael Ray Wilborne of South Boston, Jerry Allen Wilborne of Fort Myers, Fla., Timothy Glenn Wilborne of Orange Park, Fla. and Larry Davis Wilborne of Halifax; her mother of South Boston; two grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren.

Page Eugene Sowell
Page Eugene Sowell, 81, of Brookneal, died September 29, 2003 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Carolyn Lacks Sowell.
Mr. Sowell was born in Campbell County on January 31, 1922, the son of the late Sandy Martin Sowell and Josie Kate Worsham Sowell. He was a member of Brookneal United Methodist Church, Brookneal Odd Fellows Lodge, Sugar Hill Hunt Club, and Brookneal Sportsmen's Club. Mr. Sowell was a retired employee of Campbell County Sheriff's Department with 19 years of service and former Sheriff.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Joan S. Gillispie and husband, Richard, of Nathalie, Joyce S. Poe and husband, Kenneth Wayne, of Altavista; five grandchildren, Rhonda Austin and husband, Eddie, Steven Crabtree and wife, Kelly, all of Brookneal, Barry T. Davis of Nathalie, Angela Moon and husband, Ronald, and Kevin Poe, all of Altavista; two great-grandchildren, Ronald Owen Moon III and Kaylena Page Crabtree; two brothers, Walter Sowell of Brookneal and Ed Sowell and wife, Janice, of Gladys; one sister, Emma S. Monroe and husband, W.D., of Brookneal.
Mr. Sowell was preceded in death by a sister, Dolly Dunnigan; three brothers, Irvin, Aubrey and Kenneth Sowell, and two half-brothers, Martin and Wingfield Sowell.

Thomas Earl Short
Thomas Earl Short, 54, of Nathalie died Friday, November 7, 2003, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
He was born in Halifax County on October 16,1949, a son of Helen Watlington Short of Gretna and the late Cedric Earl Short and was married to Brenda Guthrie Short.
He was a member of Clover Bottom Baptist Church where he served as Chairman of the Board of Deacons, Sunday School director and Sunday School teacher.
He was the treasurer of the William Campbell Booster Club, on the Board of Directors of the Brookneal Sportsmen's Club, coached little league football and baseball and was an avid hunter and fisherman.
Mr. Short was the owner of Staunton River Realty, a certified real estate appraiser and a cattle farmer.
In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by three sons, Cedric William Short, Thomas Edward Short and James Earl Short, all of Nathalie, two sisters, Barbara S. Dell'Aria and husband Arthur of Nathalie and Shelvey S. Loyd and husband Robert of Beautort, N.C., father and mother-in-law William P. and Mildred H. Guthrie of Brookneal, two nephews, two nieces, two great-nephews and two great-nieces.
Funeral services were held Sunday, November 9, at Henderson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. James Crocker, the Rev. Charles O'Roark and the Rev. Jerry Jordan officiating.
Woodard Harris Spell (2003)
A funeral service for Woodard Harris Spell will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel, with burial in Oak Ridge Cemetery with military rites.
The Rev. Bob Watts and the Rev. Andy Bawtree will conduct the service.
Mr. Spell, 77, died Saturday at Halifax Regional Hospital.
He was a member of the American Legion and the Sons of Confederate Veterans, and served in the U.S. Navy.
He was born January 30, 1926 in Princeton, N.C., a son of Woodard Harris Spell Sr. and Herchel Davis Spell Brewer, and was married to Sara Lawrence Spell.
Mr. Spell is survived by his wife, Sara Spell of Halifax; five daughters, Gayle Spell Clements of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Susan Spell McCormick of St. Simons Island, Georgia; Libby Phillips of Richmond; Sandra Spell McGregor and Patricia Spell Barger, both of South Boston; and four sons, Larry Steven Spell of Sutherlin; David Woodard Spell, Glenn Harrison Spell and John Lawrence Spell, all of Halifax.
Also surviving are one half-sister, Shirley Every; one half-brother, Glenn Harris Spell of Princeton, N.C.; three stepchildren, Sara Katherine MacQueen of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, William M. Phillips of St. Augustine, Florida, and Rebecca Teague of Savannah, Georgia; 12 grandchildren, one great-grandchild and five step-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, Woodard Harris Spell III, in 1998.

Mary Christine Smith Spencer, 88, of South Boston, died September 12, 2003 at the Woodview.
Mrs. Spencer was born in Halifax County on June 28, 1915, the daughter of Lee Toliver Smith and Mary Beth Weatherford Smith and was married to Guy Henry Spencer Sr.
She was a member of the Main Street United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Spencer is survived by two sons, Guy H. Spencer Jr. and wife, Donna Kay, of Houston, Texas, and Lee Toliver Spencer and wife, Sandra, of Wilson, N.C., four granddaughters, Elizabeth Brooke Spencer and Katherine Blair Spencer, both of Wilson, N.C., Sara Beth Spencer and Angela Rena Spencer, both of Houston, Texas, and two grandsons, Matthew Guy Spencer and Samuel Wayne Lee Spencer, both of Houston, Texas.
Funeral services for Mrs. Spencer will be held Tuesday, September 16, in the Powell Funeral Home Chapel at 7 p.m. with the Rev. Doug Martin officiating.
Burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery Wednesday, September 17, at 10 a.m.

Mrs. Sprowl of Grotton, Conn., died August 6, 2003 at the Camelot Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center in New London, Conn.
She was the daughter of William E. and Mattie T. Vaughan Sr. of Scottsburg.
Mrs. Sprowl was married to the late Hugh L. Sprowl. She was very active with the Submarine Veterans of WWII in Groton.
Survivors include three sons, William Page of Uncasville, Conn., Hugh L.
Sprowl of Daytona Beach, Fl., and Edwin A. Sprowl of Lakeworth, Fl., a sister, Louise Bull of Williamsburg, one brother, William "Buck" Vaughan Jr. of Scottsburg, three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.
