Rev. Samuel Lloyd Stephens
Rev. Samuel Lloyd Stephens, 84, of 1611 Elliott Avenue, South Boston, died August 25, 2003 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Rev. Stephens was born in Gaffney, S.C. September 22, 1918, the son of the late Samuel Stephens and Jeanette Morehead Stephens and was married to Ethel Perkins Stephens. He pastored Mizpah Presbyterian Church of South Boston, Gethsemane Presbyterian Church of Drakes Branch, and also churches in Amelia and Lawrenceville. Rev. Stephens was a former member of the Business and Professional Men's Club.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Lynnda S. Oliver of South Boston and Jacqueline Stephens of Brooklyn, N.Y.; four sons, Rev. Albert Robinson Jr. of Elizabeth City, N.C., Samuel Stephens Jr. of Virginia Beach, Kenneth Stephens of Napersville, Ill., and Derek Stephens of Chesapeake; 10 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; two sisters, Irene S. Hunt of Charlotte, N.C. and Sula S. Richardson of Indianapolis, Ind.; and one brother, Dr. Clarence F. Stephens of Conesus, N.Y.
Funeral services for Rev. Stephens will be held tomorrow, August 28 at 2 p.m. at Dan River Bethel Baptist Church with the Revs. A.C. Robinson Jr. and James L. Thomas officiating. Burial will follow in Halifax Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the Chapel of Jeffress Funeral Home this evening from 7 until 8 o'clock, and other times at the home.
Alice Abbott Hedrick Stevens
Funeral services for Mrs. Alice Abbott Hedrick Stevens will be held Tuesday, August 26, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Townes Memorial Chapel.
The Rev. Thomas Shepherd will officiate.
Burial will follow in the Highland Burial Park.
Mrs. Stevens died Friday, August 22 at the Roman Eagle Nursing Home in Danville.
She was born on June 7, 1906 in Chatham to the late Thomas Stephen Abbott and the late Alice Taylor Abbott.
Mrs. Stevens was married to the late Charles W. Stevens.
She was previously married to the late Jessie Lee Hedricks.
Mrs. Stevens was a homemaker and attended Grace Design United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Dorothy Hedrick Sowers, five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Stevens was preceded in death by one daughter, Edna Hedrick Gauldin, one son, Bernard L. Hedrick and two grandchildren.
William Edward ‘John’ Stevens
William Edward ‘John’ Stevens, 76, of Danville died August 1, 2003 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Stevens was born May 25, 1927, in Halifax County the son of Claude Stevens and Nadie Huffman Stevens.
He was employed with Dan River Mills for 25 years and was a member of Arbor Baptist Church. Mr. Stevens was a Veteran of the US Army during WWII serving with the Military Police in Germany.
Survivors include three daughters, Martha Payne and her husband, William of Richmond, Carolyn Jane Stevens of Lawrenceville and Donna Ruth Stevens of Ringgold; two sons, Danny Edward Stevens and his wife, Mary, of Danville, and Matthew Sterling Stevens and wife, Cathy, of Alton; one sister, Mabel Bowen of Virgilina; grandchildren, Ann Stevens Adams, Amanda Stevens, Alyesa Stevens, William Payne IV, Stephanie Payne McGriffin, Clarence Thompson and Rebecca Stevens; and his great-grandchildren, Morgan Thompson, Madison Payne, Caleb Adams, Jody Adams and William Adams. Mr. Stevens was preceded in death by one son, William Edward Stevens Jr.
Services were held August 3 at 4 p.m. at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel in Danville with the Rev. Averette Witcher officiating. Burial with military rites followed in Arbor Baptist Church Cemetery in Halifax County.
William Lowell Strickland
South Boston businessman and civic leader William Lowell Strickland, 82, died Sunday at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Mr. Strickland co-founded Electric Service Co. with the late Derward Collier in 1940.
The company remains in the family today with Mr. Strickland's son-in-law, Tom Raab, the owner/operator.
Mr. Strickland was a member of First Baptist Church, and is remembered as very active with the Downtown Friendship Mission.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II, was a founding member of the South Boston-Halifax County Historical Museum and was a member of the South Boston Planning Commission.
Mr. Strickland was born in South Boston on April 5, 1921, the son of Edwin Jesse Strickland and Martha Ella Green Strickland and was married to Dorothy Raine Shotwell Strickland.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Anne Harvey Raab and husband, Tom, of South Boston, and Betty Fleetwood Hoke and husband, Stephen, of Gurnee, Ill.; one sister, Frances S. Allison of Port Orange, Fla.; five grandchildren, Scott Raab of South Boston, Rebecca Raab of Wilmington, N.C., Lesley Hoke of Auburn, Ala., Catherine Hoke and Elisabeth Hoke, both of Gurnee.
Mr. Strickland was preceded in death by his wife; one brother, Cecil Strickland; and four sisters, Melissa Elva Strickland, Jessie Green Strickland, Hazel Edith Strickland and Margarette Elise Strickland.
A graveside service for Mr. Strickland will be held Friday, December 12, 2003, in Oak Ridge Cemetery at 2 p.m. The Rev. Dr. Russell Lee, the Rev. Dr. Tim Cannon, Jack Brown and Minnie Tingen will officiate.
The family will receive friends at the home, 837 North Main Street, South Boston.

Bessie Patrick Stewart
Bessie Patrick Stewart, 40, of 1010 Dana Court, South Boston died November 19, 2003 in South Boston.
Ms. Stewart was born in Halifax County on March 12, 1963, the daughter of Leroy Patrick and Annie Vass Patrick. She was a member of First Baptist Church of News Ferry and was employed by Wachovia Bank.
Survivors include one daughter, Kiera Stewart of the home; one son, Travis Stewart of the home; five sisters, Mary Patrick and Ella Bowman, both of South Boston, Flo Macklin of Reidsville, N.C., Phyllis Wright of Ft. Washington, Md. and Elizabeth Patrick of Washington, D.C.; one brother, William Patrick of South Boston; one sister-in-law, Christina Patrick; and two brothers-in-law, Robert Wright and Richard Macklin.
Funeral services for Ms. Stewart will be held tomorrow, November 22 at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Ferry Street, South Boston with the Rev. Ronnie Keene officiating. Burial will follow in the First Baptist Church of News Ferry Cemetery.

Annie Wilborn Switzer
Annie Wilborn Switzer, 55, of Nathalie died October 11, 2003 at her home.
Mrs. Switzer was born April 13, 1948, in Halifax County, the daughter of the late John Thomas Wilborn and Mary Elizabeth Seamster Wilborn and was married to Kenneth Wayne Switzer. She was a member of the Millstone Baptist Church.
Mrs. Switzer is survived by her husband, two daughters, Pamela Sue Switzer and Patricia Parrish Bryant, both of Nathalie, two sons, Roger Lee Parrish, of Burgaw, N.C., and Michael Wayne Parrish of Selma, N.C., two stepsons, Barry Wayne Switzer of Durham and John Paul Switzer of Olive Branch, Miss., three brothers, William Wilborn, Robert Wilborn, both of Nathalie, and Clyde Wilborn of Scottsburg, three sisters, Frances King and Mary Hancock, both of Nathalie, and Nancy Walker of Redhouse, Va., and 17 grandchildren.
Funeral services for Mrs. Switzer will be held Tuesday, October 14, at 2 p.m. at the Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bob Watts conducting the service.
Burial will take place in the Millstone Baptist Church Cemetery.

Floyd Wesley Sydnor
Floyd Wesley Sydnor, 71, of Brooklyn, N.Y., formerly of Campbell County, died at Staten Island Hospital in New York.
He was born in Campbell County on October 23, 1932, the son of the late Willie Sydnor and Fannie Miller Sydnor.
Survivors of Mr. Sydnor include his four sisters, Clarissa Williams of Arlington, Hazel Saxon and Hester Jones, both of Washington, D.C. and Learlean Hemphill of Temple Hill, Md.
Funeral services for Mr. Sydnor will be held November 7, 2003 at 11 a.m. at Hills Creek Baptist Church in Gladys with the Rev. John Price officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Lura Maxine Talley
Lura Maxine Talley, 80, of 4059 E. Hyco Road, South Boston, died September 4, 2003 at The Woodview.
Ms. Talley was born in Halifax County on September 25, 1922, the daughter of Ida Hudson Cole and Tom Talley. She was a member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one sister, Patsy C. Hughes of Birmingham, Ala.; one brother, George Wallace Cole of South Boston; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Graveside services for Ms. Talley were held September 6 at 11 a.m. in Oak Ridge Cemetery with the Rev. Tony Sisk officiating.

Shirley Newton Tarbert
Shirley Newton Tarbert, 90, widow of Allie Clifton Tarbert, died July 23, 2003.
Mrs. Tarbert was a homemaker and a member of Nelson Baptist Church.
The Rev. Jim McAlister conducted funeral services at 2 p.m. July 24 at Nelson Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Tarbert is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Frances and Charles Winckler of Virgilina; one sister, Rita Lowery of Newport News; one brother, Garnett Newton of Nelson; two grandchildren, Allen Daniel Cosner and wife, Kate, and Samuel Ora Cosner and wife, Erica, all of Virgilina; two great-grandchildren, Devin Cosner and Marissa Cosner. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Tommy, Rommie and Roy Newton; and two sisters, Ruth Duell and Gertie Rice.
Fred Lee Taylor
Fred Lee Taylor, 71, of 2039 Love Shop Road, Halifax, died September 23, 2003 at his home.
Mr. Taylor was born in Halifax County on March 29, 1932, the son of the late Fred Robert Taylor and Mary Hundley Taylor and was married to Rosie Brown Taylor. He was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses.
Survivors include his wife; four sisters, Clara Abbott of Nathalie, Corrine Watkins of Oxon Hill, Md., Mary Taylor of South Boston and Queen Dixon of Halifax.
Funeral services for Mr. Taylor will be held tomorrow, September 27, at 11 a.m. at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses with Bro. Phillip Lewis officiating. Burial will take place at Virginia Veterans Cemetery in Amelia, at a later date.

Ollie S. Taylor
A funeral service will be held for Ollie S. Taylor of Mechanicsville at 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 5, 2003, at Nelsen Funeral Home.
Interment will be at Washington Memorial Park.
Mrs. Taylor, 84, died Saturday, August 2, 2003.
She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Howard J. Taylor Sr., a son Howard J. Taylor Jr. and his wife, Brenda, two grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren, as well as a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Mrs. Taylor was retired from the American Tobacco Company, and was a member of Antioch Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends on Monday from 2-4 p.m. as well as from 6-8 p.m. at the Nelsen Funeral Home.
Henry S. ‘Tommy’ Thompson
Henry S. "Tommy" Thompson, 84, of Lillington, N.C., formerly of Halifax County, died November 1, 2003.
He was the son of the late Frank Graham Thompson and Edna Robertson Thompson and was married to Bobby C. Thompson.
Mr. Thompson is survived by his wife of 61 years, two daughters, Robin Thompson of Dunn, N.C. and Holly Mayberry and her husband Les of Stoneville, N.C., two sons, Alan Thompson and his wife Sharon of New Bern, N.C. and David Thompson and his wife Artie of Henderson, Ky., eight grandsons and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, November 4, at the Lillington United Methodist Church in Lillington N.C.
Graveside committal services will follow at 3 p.m. at the Union United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Robert Leslie Thomas Sr.
Robert Leslie Thomas Sr., 69, of 1045 West Oak Hill Drive, Halifax died December 15, 2003 at his home.
Mr. Thomas was born in Halifax County on April 1, 1934, the son of William Ephraim Thomas and Leslie Hupp Thomas Bebber and was married to Edith Hazelwood Thomas. He was a member of Centerville Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Robert Leslie Thomas Jr. and wife, Carolyn, of Fishersville, Randy Douglas Thomas and wife, Patsy, of Vernon Hill, and Averett Vincent Thomas and wife, Dawn, of High Point, N.C.; two daughters, Tammy T. Daniel and husband, Eddie, of Alton, and Rhonda T. Powell and husband, Steve, of South Boston; his mother of South Boston; seven grandchildren, Robert Thomas III, Brian and Karen Satterfield, Percelia Powell, Frankie Puryear, Blake Powell, and Laurel Daniel; two brothers, Cary Thomas and wife, Doris, of South Boston, and Carl Vance Bebber and wife, Nancy, of Montpelier; two sisters, Dorothy T. Tuck and husband, Walter, of Roxboro, N.C., and Geneva T. Snow and husband, Franklin, of South Boston. Mr. Thomas was preceded in death by two brothers, William and Cecil Thomas.
A funeral service for Mr. Thomas will be held tomorrow, December 18 at 2 p.m. at Centerville Baptist Church with the Revs. Richard Saunders and Ralph Neal officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery.

Bertha Traynham
Ms. Bertha Traynham, 78, of Hunting Creek Road died December 19, 2003 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
She was born in Halifax County on January 1, 1925, a daughter of the late Samuel Traynham and Paige Morton Traynham.
Ms. Traynham was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church.
She is survived by her two daughters, Mrs. Ruby Bane and Mrs. Marie Roberts, both of New Haven, Conn., one sister, Mrs. Josephine Wade of South Boston, six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Ms. Traynham were held Saturday, Dec. 27, at 2:30 p.m. at Bethlehem Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery.
Sadie Royster Terry
Sadie Royster Terry, 82, of 1070 High Point Road, South Boston died December 30, 2003 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mrs. Terry was born May 26, 1921, in Victoria the daughter of William Henry and Virginia Howerton Royster and was married to Henry T. Terry Jr. She was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church where she served as deacon and Sunday school teacher.
Survivors include one son, Henry T. 'Hank' Terry III and wife, Susan, of South Boston; two daughters, Julia R. Terry of King, N.C. and Joyce T. Blevins and husband, James, also of King; two grandchildren, Adam T. Terry and Traci N. Terry, both of South Boston; two sisters, Sybil R. Zava and husband, Tom, of Oak Ridge, Tenn. and Josephine R. Barnes of Colonial Heights; and a sister-in-law, Kathryn T. Wilson, and husband, Baxter. Other than her parents and husband, Mrs. Terry was preceded in death by a brother, William E. Royster.
A funeral will be held tomorrow, January 1 at 2 p.m. from Wrenn-Yeatts, North Main Chapel by the Revs. Joseph Willis and Bill Wilkins. Burial will follow in Highland Burial Park.

Lila Mae Powell Trent, 87, of South Boston died September 26, 2003 at The Woodview.
Mrs. Trent was born in Halifax County on May 13, 1916, the daughter of Charlie P. Powell and Ethel Barksdale Powell and was married to Herman Watkins Trent. She was a member of Second Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Elizabeth T. Cole of South Boston; two sons, Radford Trent and Hal Trent, both of South Boston; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by one son, Curtis Trent.
Funeral services for Mrs. Trent were held September 28 at 2 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jim Smith officiating. Burial followed in Halifax Memorial Gardens.
