Lowell Albert Waller
Lowell Albert Waller, 72, of 1083 Sandy Ridge Road, Nathalie died November 29, 2003. He was the husband of Nancy Burton Waller.
Mr. Waller was born in Halifax County April 8, 1931, the son of Robert Samuel Waller and Lillie King Waller. He was a member of Oak Grove Methodist Church and co-owner of Robert's Quick Stop.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Robert A. Waller of Nathalie; two daughters, Lisa K. Waller of Williamsburg and Catherine C. Waller and husband, H.T., of Nathalie; and one grandson, J. Alan Waller of Nathalie.
A funeral service for Mr. Waller will be held at 2 p .m. today, December 3, at Clover Bottom Baptist Church with the Revs. James Crocker, Sam Caldwell and Bob Newcomb officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Crystal Barbour Washington
Crystal Barbour Washington, 79, of New York, formerly of Nathalie, died July 11, 2003 at St. Luke Hospital in Newburgh, N.Y.
She was born in Halifax County on February 20, 1924, the daughter of Joshua A. Barbour and Lillian Ewell Barbour and was married to George Washington Sr. She was a member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, George Washington Jr., of N.Y.; one daughter, Gwendolyn W. Deverteuls of N.J.; one grandchild, Taieshia Washington; two sisters, Rosa Dunklin of Mt. Vernon, N.Y. and Ruth Hendricks of Philadelphia, Pa.
Funeral services for Mrs. Washington will be held July 17 at 2 p.m. at Hickory Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. A.L. Dean officiating. Burial will follow in the Barbour Family Cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, and other times at the home of George Washington Jr., 4170 Chestnut Road, Nathalie.
Curtis Waskey Sr.
Former South Boston resident and businessman Curtis Ray Waskey Sr. died Monday in his Alberta home.
He was 68.
Mr. Waskey is the former owner of Waskey Cleaners in South Boston.
A native of South Boston, Mr. Waskey was a retired real estate entrepreneur both in Halifax County and Virginia Beach.
He was the third of four generations to operate Waskey Cleaners.
Mr. Waskey owned the business for 15 years, from 1984 to 1999, before he sold it to his son, Curtis Waskey Jr., the current operator.
He was preceded in death by his parents, L.P. (Buster) Waskey and Mary Waskey, as well as a brother, Lewis Peyton Waskey III.
Curtis Waskey Sr. is survived by his wife, Geneva Conner Waskey and their five children, Curtis R. Waskey Jr., and his wife, Alice of South Boston; Tony L. Waskey Sr. and his wife, Barbara, of Mundelein, Il.; Dennis A. Waskey and his wife, Gail, of Virginia Beach; Mary W. Mattice and her husband, Bob, of Chesapeake; and Mark Waskey and his wife, Regina, of Midlothian, Va.; nine grandchildren, Curtis III, Mathew Troy, T.J., Julie Marie, Kenneth, David, Jennifer, Crystal and Hannah; and a brother, Phillip Wayne Waskey Sr., of South Boston.
A private graveside service will be conducted at a later date.
Keith Hamilton Watts
Keith Hamilton Watts, 31, of 1081 Cluster Ridge Trail, South Boston died August 11, 2003 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mr. Watts was born in Richmond on February 17, 1972. He was a member of Grace Baptist Church and a member of Hyco Hunting Club. He was a part-time employee of Midway Mechanical Heating & Air Conditioning.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia 'Ginny' Owen Watts; his mother, Teresa W. Crenshaw and her husband, Roger; his father, William Harry Watts Jr. and his wife, Bonnie; one daughter, Abbie Dare Watts; one son, Dawson Lee Watts; one sister, Ashley Brooke Watts, all of South Boston; one brother, David Rodney Watts and his wife, Tara, of Scottsburg; his maternal grandfather, Leonard Lee Wilbourn; his maternal grandmother, Lula W. Wilbourn; and his paternal grandmother, Dorothy Pool Watts, all of South Boston. Mr. Watts was preceded in death by a brother, Christopher Brad Watts.
Services will be held at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel Friday, August 15, at 2 p.m.
The family will receive friends at Brooks Funeral Home Thursday evening between 7:00 and 9:00.
Earl Weatherford
Earl Weatherford, 82, of 3150 Ridge Road, Vernon Hill died July 16, 2003 at The Woodview.
Mr. Weatherford was born in Caswell County, N.C. on November 12, 1920, the son of Luther and Nettie Weatherford, and was married to Mamie Barksdale Weatherford.
Survivors include four brothers, James Weatherford of Halifax, Calvin Weatherford of N.C., Billy and Clifton Weatherford, both of Danville; seven sisters, Elizabeth Barksdale of Halifax, Annie Ladd of Garnerville, N.C., Dolly Richerson of South Boston, Lottie Farmer, Gladys Mays and Joan Barker, all of Danville.
Funeral services for Mr. Weatherford will be held today, July 18 at 2 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Rudolph Jacobs officiating. Burial will take place in Halifax Memorial Gardens.
Ruth Roach Weatherford
Ruth Roach Weatherford, 88, of 2630 L.P. Bailey Memorial Highway, Halifax, died August 26, 2003 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mrs. Weatherford was born in Pittsylvania County on October 23, 1914, the daughter of Norman Lee Roach and Ellie Edwards Roach and was married to Archie Smith Weatherford. She was a member of First Baptist Church Republican Grove.
Survivors include six daughters and sons-in-law, Shelby W. Hardy and husband, Alex, of Danville, Charline W. Bennett and husband, Jimmy, Verona W. Allen and husband, Dennis, all of Halifax, Delma W. Redd and husband, Dean, of Java, Kay W. Burton and husband, John, of South Boston, and Carolyn W. Doss and husband, Lynnie, of Evington; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Franklin L. Weatherford and wife, Linda, Langston Weatherford, Tony Weatherford and wife, Kathy, Larry Weatherford and wife, Jeanine, all of Danville; four sisters, Velma McGregor and Sue Hankins, both of Gretna, Lizzie Dalton of Newport News, and Mary Barbour of Martinsville; 21 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; another son-in-law, Ronald Gammon, widow of Ellie W. Gammon.
Mrs. Weatherford was preceded in death by one daughter, Ellie W. Gammon; two sons, Kenneth Ray Weatherford and Roy Allen Weatherford, and one grandchild, Roy Wayne Weatherford.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow, August 28 at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church Republican Grove with the Rev. Shelton Miles III officiating. Burial will take place in Asbury United Methodist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends this evening at Powell Funeral Home from 7:00 until 8:30, and other times at the home.

Mildred Dixon Weatherford
Mildred Dixon Weatherford, 86, of 4106 Chatham Road, Halifax, died September 11, 2003 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mrs. Weatherford was born in Halifax County on April 15, 1917, the daughter of Samuel Luke Dixon and Mattie Moore Dixon and was married to William Burton Weatherford Sr. She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church where she was a member of the church choir and president of the United Methodist Women. She was a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.
Survivors include her husband; one daughter and son-in-law, Margaret W. Hudson and husband, Eric, of South Boston; one son and daughter-in-law, William B. Weatherford Jr. and wife, Diane, of Halifax; one brother, Roger J. Dixon and his wife, Wanda, of Richmond; one sister, Elizabeth Dixon Robertson of Roanoke; two grandsons, Bryon Eric Hudson and wife, Julie, of Danville, and Timothy Lee Weatherford of Halifax; two step-grandchildren, Mark Conner of Richmond and Marie Jones and husband, Keith of Thomasville, N.C.; two great-grandsons, Benjamin Hudson and Ethan Hudson; one step-great-granddaughter, Emily Grace Jones. Mrs. Weatherford was preceded in death by an infant son, three brothers and two sisters.
Funeral services were held September 14 at 2 p.m. at Asbury United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Roger Wilborn officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Pauline Ruth B.B. West
Pauline Ruth Bourne Bullock West, 84, of 55 Mimosa Drive, Halifax died November 15, 2003 at her home.
Mrs. West was born in Charleston, W.Va. on April 3, 1919, the daughter of Edwin R. Bourne and Cora A. Bourne. She was married to George Robert Bullock Jr. and Ralph Leland West, and was a member of Beth Car Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Ruth Gallaher and husband, Gerald, of Tomball, Texas and Leisa Bullock-Atha and husband, Bobby, of Halifax; two sons, George Robert Bullock III and wife, Marilyn, of New Hope, Pa. and Richard Tyler Bullock of Atlanta, Ga.; nine grandchildren, Kelly Wagnon and Gerald Gallaher Jr., both of Tomball, Travis Haynes of Charleston, W.Va., Stacey Atha of Halifax, Jason Testerman of Cincinnatti, Ohio and Justin Testerman, of Minneapolis, Mn., Meredith Bullock, Jillian Bullock and Sterling Bullock, all of Atlanta, Ga.; and seven great-grandchildren.

Queen Wade White
Queen Wade White, 67, of Grubby Road, Halifax died January 5, 2003 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mrs. White was born August 10, 1936, the daughter of Solomon Wade and Mattie Wade and was married to William White. She was a member of County Line Baptist Church.
Survivors include four daughters, Barbara Edmunds of Richmond, Carolyn White of Frederick, Md., Linda Henderson of Halifax and Deborah Barnette of South Boston; one son, Michael White of Halifax; one stepson, Jerry Ragsdale; two sisters, Bessie Ferrell of South Boston and Thelma White of New York; two brothers, Kenneth Womack of Md. and Walter Womack of South Boston; 35 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; one aunt, Marie Ferrell of the home; a devoted nephew, George Sparrow; and Emily Edgar whom she raised.
A funeral service for Mrs. White will be held tomorrow, January 10 at County Line Baptist Church at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Otis Dillard officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Jessie Lee Hudson Whitlow
Jessie Lee Hudson Whitlow, 93, of Greensboro, N.C. died November 2, 2003 at Beacon Place.
Funeral services will be held today, November 5 at 2 p.m. at Forbis & Dick Guilford Chapel with burial to follow in Guilford Memorial Park.
Mrs. Whitlow was born in Halifax County to the late Henry Archer and Fannie Ford Hudson. She was a member of Glenwood Presbyterian Church and retired from Thalheimers Department Store.
Survivors include one daughter, Augusta Whitlow Bowen and her husband, Lynwood, of Greensboro; grandchildren, Lyn C. Bowen and his wife, Sylvia, of Greensboro and Gary L. Bowen and his wife, Donna, of Chapel Hill, N.C.; five great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Nancy Elizabeth Whitlow, 77, of 1228 Fenton Street, South Boston died June 16, 2003 at her home.
Ms. Whitlow was born in Halifax County on July 15, 1925, the daughter of John Henry Whitlow and Sallie Adams Whitlow.
Survivors include one brother, David Whitlow of Charlotte, N.C.; and one sister-in-law, Dora West Stubblefield of South Boston.
A memorial service for Ms. Whitlow will be held July 26 at Powell Funeral Home Chapel at 4 p.m. with the Rev. John Wilder officiating.
Wilford Wright Whitlow
Wilford Wright Whitlow, 60, of 218 Easley Street, South Boston died July 30, 2003 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mr. Whitlow was born in Person County, N.C. on February 4, 1943, the son of Amos Thomas Whitlow and Lucie W. Gravitt and was married to Althea Adams Whitlow. He was a member of Second Baptist Church, and was a self-employed dry wall contractor.
Survivors include his wife; his mother; one son, Wilford A. ‘Tony’ Whitlow and his wife, Shelia, of Virgilina; one daughter, Tamra W. Whitt and her husband, Kevin, of Virgilina; three grandsons, William ‘Will’ Whitlow, Andrew Whitlow and Daniel Whitt; two granddaughters, Sara Whitt and Grace Whitt; and a special niece, Donna W. Francis and family of South Boston. Mr. Whitlow was preceded in death by his father; two brothers, Charles Whitlow and Kenneth Gravitt; and one sister, Judy Newcomb.
Funeral services for Mr. Whitlow were held August 2 at 2 p.m. at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jim Smith and Ricky Whitlow officiating. Burial followed in the Jones Family Cemetery in Virgilina.

Edward Lee ‘Buck’ Wilborne
Edward Lee ”Buck” Wilborne, 76, of Halifax, died Friday, November 21, 2003, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mr. Wilborne was born in South Boston on May 5, 1927, the son of the late William Wilborne and Viola Hall Wilborne and was married to the late Mary Ford Wilborne.
He was a veteran of the United States Navy and was a retired contractor and antiques dealer.
Mr. Wilborne was a member of the Woodmen of the World and the American Legion Post 8. After his retirement he enjoyed growing and selling his produce locally and as a vendor at the Danville Farmer’s Market.
He is survived by one daughter, Loretta Wilborne Bryson Hailey, and her husband, Michael, of Halifax, one sister, Inez Michaels of South Boston, two grandsons, Jonathan Edward Bryson of Orlando, Fla., and Patrick R. Bryson of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and one granddaughter, Carrie E. Bryson of Halifax.
Mr. Wilborne was preceded in death by one son-in-law, Doyle W. Bryson, one sister, Ethel Neal, and two brothers, Walter Wilborne and Earl Wilborne.
Graveside services were held for Mr. Wilborne yesterday, November 23, at Halifax Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Melvin Bradshaw officiating.

Mark Andrew Wilborne
A memorial service for Mark Andrew Wilborne of Nathalie will be held Sunday, Dec. 7, 2003, at 3 p.m. at Republican Grove First Baptist Church.
The Rev. Shelton Miles will conduct the service.
Mr. Wilborne was born in Lynchburg on October 21, 1966, and was raised on Mt. Cross Road in Danville.
He is survived by his wife, Deborah "Debbie" Hill Wilborne, and four children: Jennifer and Joshua Ellington, Joshua Drew Wilborne, Jessica Dawn Wilborne and Jordan Marie Wilborne.
Mr. Wilborne is also survived by his father, Marvin E. Wilborne Jr. of Danville, and his mother, Dorothy Walton Dix of Pelham, N.C., and one brother, Marvin Eddie Wilborne III of Danville, a sister, Tracie Wilborne Powell of Collinsville, and a half-sister, Tiffany Brooke Eanes, also of Danville.
The family will receive guests at the church fellowship hall after the memorial service.

The kiosk will be a permanent sign placed at the old boat ramp featuring a map of the park and the lake, with a designated section for fishermen to display pictures of the day's catch. Mary Catherine Newton Wilkins
Mary Catherine Newton Wilkins, 71, of 908 Edmunds Street, South Boston died November 12, 2003 at The Woodview.
Mrs. Wilkins was born in Halifax County on August 17, 1932, the daughter of Armstead Newton and Alice Terry Newton and was married to Willie Wilkins Jr. She was a member of Greater Mayfield Apostolic Church.
Survivors include five daughters, Barbara D. Wilkins of Los Angeles, Calif, Jacqueline D. Wilkins of Richmond, Deborah Hankins of Danville, Karen L. Wilkins of South Boston and Joyce N. Jones of Washington, D.C.; four sons, Elder Bernard Wilkins and Michael T. Newton, both of South Boston, Michael Wilkins of Fredericksburg and Edward E. Wilkins of Petersburg; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one sister, Alice Payne of Washington; and one brother, James Newton of South Boston.
Funeral services for Mrs. Wilkins will be held today, November 17 at 1 p.m. at Greater Mayfield Apostolic Church with Elder Bernard Wilkins and Pastor Leonia Palmer officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery.
Jill Lacy Will (2003)
A memorial service will be held today for community leader and volunteer Mrs. Jill Lacy Will of Love Shop Road, Halifax.
The 1 p.m. Monday service will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church, South Boston, with the Rev. Andy Bawtree officiating.
Mrs. Will, 44, died Friday at Halifax Regional Hospital.
She was born in Halifax County on September 15, 1959, the daughter of the late Charles Claiborne Lacy and Mildred Diani Lacy.
She is survived by her husband, William W. Will, three children, Farley, Lacy and Bailey, and a host of dedicated and loving friends.
She graduated from Halifax County Senior High School in 1977 and graduated from Virginia Tech in 1981 as a statistics major.
She was co-owner of the Solution Store, Inc. since 1986 and a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer.
Mrs. Will served on the YMCA Board of Directors, serving as president and treasurer, the Red Cross Board of Directors, serving as treasurer and vice-president, the United Daughters of the Confederacy, The United Way Board of Directors and as youth director of the United Friends Church Group.
Upon retiring from the Red Cross board after 12 years of service, she was presented the Clara Barton Meritorious Volunteer Leadership Award of 2003 for loyalty and distinguished service.
