Bettie Conner Lowery

Funeral services for Mrs. Bettie Conner Lowery of Sandy Beach Road, South Boston, were held Sunday at Glenwood United Methodist Church with burial in the church cemetery.

The Rev. Karen Sandervall and the Rev. Melvin Bradshaw conducted the service.

Mrs. Lowery, 84, died Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004 at Halifax Regional Hospital.

She was born March 7, 1920 in Halifax County, a daughter of the late Lennie Bruce Conner and Alice Lane Reagan Conner, and was married to the late Fred Hardy Lowery.

Mrs. Lowery was a homemaker.

She is survived by one son, Mike Lowery, and wife Kim of Scottsburg; one daughter, Sheila L. Vaughan, and husband Billy of South Boston; a grandson and two granddaughters, Christopher Lowery, Amanda Lowery and Mary Snead; two step-grandsons, Christopher Fisher and Jonathan Fisher; and one great-grandson, Dirik Allen Snead Jr.

Mrs. Lowery was predeceased by four brothers and four sisters.

Evelyn Comer Newcomb

Evelyn Comer Newcomb, 83, of 2003 Buckshoal Road, Virgilina, died August 3, 2004 in Halifax Regional Hospital.

Mrs. Newcomb was born April 13, 1921, in Halifax County, the daughter of the late Charlie Zebulon Comer and Maude Link Comer. She was married to the late Henry A. Newcomb, and was a member of Grace Baptist Church. She was a retired administrative assistant with South Boston Police Department.

Survivors include two sons, Gary Allen Newcomb and wife, Becky, and Harold Henry Newcomb and wife, Pam, all of South Boston; one daughter, Brenda Newcomb Pulliam; three granddaughters, Cynthia Newcomb, Mandy P. Hogg and Kristie S. Morris; two grandsons, Matthew Newcomb and Troy Pulliam; four great-grandchildren, Emma, Elaine and Ella Pulliam, and Kayleigh Morris; one brother, C.Z. Comer and wife, Peggy, of Warrenton; three sisters, Nira Wade and husband, Berley, and Carolyn Lawson and husband, Willie, all of Chester, and Dean Gaston and husband, David, of Villanova, Pa. She was also preceded in death by a son-in-law, Gerald Pulliam; and her stepmother, Lizzie W. Comer.

Funeral services for Mrs. Newcomb will be held today, August 6 at Grace Baptist Church with the Revs. Jack Stewart and Edward Newcomb officiating.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Connie Oakes McDowell

Funeral services for Mrs. Connie Oakes McDowell of Jones Ferry Road will be held today at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Christian Church.

The Rev. Issac Mooneyham will conduct the service, with burial at Halifax Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. McDowell, 67, died Friday, Aug. 6, 2004 at Duke University Hospital.

She was born October 13, 1936, a daughter of Joseph C. Oakes and Blanche Crews Oakes, and was married to Frank T. McDowell.

She was a member of Pleasant Grove Christian Church and was an avid gardener.

She is survived by her husband, Frank McDowell of Jones Ferry Road; two daughters, Wanda Odom and her husband, Steve, of The Woodlands, Texas, and JoAnn McWilliams and her husband, Danny, of Atlanta; four grandchildren, Stephen and Cody Odom of The Woodlands, Texas, and Samantha and Keith McWilliams of Atlanta; four sisters, Clara O. Lloyd of Burlington, N.C., Evelyn O. Webb, Martha O. Webb and Peggy Womack, all of Halifax; one brother, J. C. Oakes of Danville.

Diane Francina Brooks Owen

Diane Francina Brooks Owen, 53, of Willingboro, N.J., formerly of South Boston, died July 30, 2004 in Willingboro.

Mrs. Owen was born in Halifax County on July 29, 1951, the daughter of John Henry Brooks and Gracie Wilkerson Brooks, and was married to Leon W. Owen Jr. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Ferry Street, South Boston.

Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Yolanda Owen Smalls of San Antonio, Texas and Monica Owen Preshe of Newark, Del.; one son, Leon W. Owen III of Jersey City, N.J.; two grandchildren, Donte and Devin Smalls, both of San Antonio; her parents, of South Boston; four sisters, Thelma C. Dixon, Marilyn B. Brandon and Gloria D. Moore, all of South Boston and Linda J.

Brown of Wilmington, N.C.; two brothers, Henry Brooks of South Boston and Jerry Brooks of Hampton; and her mother-in-law, Marie Mosley of South Boston.

Funeral services for Mrs. Owen will be held tomorrow, August 5 at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church with the Rev. William M. Dixon officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the home of her parents, 821 Edmunds Street, South Boston.

Rev. Claude George Powers

Rev. Claude George Powers, 102, of Salem, died August 8, 2004.

Rev. Powers was born in Crawfordsville, Ind. and graduated from Life Bible College in Los Angeles, Calif. He first served as an evangelist and later as pastor of churches in Illinois, Ohio, North Carolina and Virginia.

Survivors include his wife, Hester Powers; sons and daughter-in-law, Will and Mary Powers and John Powers; daughter and son-in-law, Virginia and Dwight Jones; grandchildren, Mirinda Reynolds, Megan Reuter, Mariel Powers, Meris Powers, Rachel Talbott, Sarah Schmucker, Mary Jones and John Jones; great-grandchildren, Mikaila Reynolds, Barrett Reynolds, Zachary Powers.
Funeral services for Rev. Powers will be today, August 11, at 11 a.m. at Bethel Assembly of God, with Pastor Burt Franks officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery in Roanoke.

Frances Turner Reese

Frances Turner Reese, 93, of South Boston, died August 4, 2004 at The Woodview.

Mrs. Reese was born in Halifax County on March 5, 1911, the daughter of Ruth Barker Turner and Andrew S. Turner and was married to the late Roy W. Reese Sr. She was a member of Scottsburg Baptist Church, the Order of The Eastern Star, and was retired from Burlington Industries, Inc.

Survivors include one daughter, Alice R. Satterfield and husband, Bruce, of Halifax; one son, R. Wilson Reese Jr. and wife, Sylvia, of Halifax; two brothers, Hughes Turner and wife, Wilma, of Brunswick, Ga. and Banks Turner and wife, Pat, of Marietta, Ga.; and one granddaughter, Brenda S. Lecocq and husband, David, of Charlotte, N.C.

Mrs. Reese was also preceded in death by four brothers and five sisters.
Graveside services will be held today, August 6, at 2 p.m. at Oakland Cemetery, Scottsburg. The Rev. Terry Scearce will officiate.

Bruce Neal Drake

Bruce Neal Drake, age 51, of Winston-Salem, N.C. passed away August 2, 2004, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.

Mr. Drake was born March 14, 1953 in Mercer County, Pennsylvania, the son of Donald Eugene and Monteese Walker Drake. He was a graduate of Halifax County Senior High School class of 1971 and of Virginia Tech in 1977. He was an employee of Barker Claim Service as a property claims adjuster, also serving 26years at Crawford & Co. Insurance.

Mr. Drake was an active member of Main Street United Methodist Church where he served on the cemetery committee. He was also active and a board member in Scout Troop 944.

Surviving are his wife, Linda Taylor Drake, of the home; a son and daughter; Steven Neal and Lauren Anne Drake; two step daughters; Shannon Melissa and Megan Elizabeth Taylor; a brother, Rodney Drake and wife, Barbara; a sister; Karen Drake Bradley and husband, Richard; a niece; Kathryn Bradley, two nephews; David Drake and Andrew Bradley. Mr. Drake was preceded in death by his mother.

Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. today, August 6, at Main Street United Methodist Church by Dr. Al Ward. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

James Willie Duffey

Funeral services for Mr. James Willie Duffey will be held today at 2 p.m., with services at the Mt. Laurel United Methodist Church.

The Revs. Steve Byrd and Courtney W. Coffer will officiate.

Burial will follow in the Mt.Laurel United Methodist Church cemetery.

Mr. Duffey died Saturday, July 31, 2004, at The Woodview.

He was 77.

Mr. Duffey was born in Halifax County on September 26, 1926, the son of the late Allie Schoolfield Duffey and the late Mamie Lou Williams Duffey.

He was a retired employee of Craddock & Terry, was a farmer and was a member of the Mt. Laurel United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Carrie Bell Duffey of South Boston; one daughter, Carolyn Wilson and husband Glenn of Clover; two sons, Ray Duffey and wife Bonnie and James Duffey, all of South Boston, eight grandchildren; Sandy W. Cabaniss of Clover, Cindy W. Collins of Crystal Hill, Johnny Wilson of Clover, Shawnie W. Cline of South Boston, Misty Jordan of Clarksville, Tasha Burton of Winston Salem, N.C., Cody Duffey of South Boston and Brooke Duffey of South Boston; and six great-grandchildren, E.C. Collins, Jessica Collins, Savanna Cabaniss, Jared Cabaniss, Gavin Jordan and Chase Burton.

Harvey Christopher Baynes

Harvey Christopher Baynes, 82, of Roanoke, passed away Friday, July 23, 2004.

A funeral service was held Monday, July 26, 2004 at Oakey’s Funeral Service and interment followed at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Roanoke.

Mr. Baynes was a native of Halifax County and was married to Virginia Green Baynes, formerly of South Boston.

Mr. Baynes was a retired Exxon employee and drove charter buses for a number of years.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Baynes is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Larry Rakes of Roanoke, two sisters, Essie B. Tune of Roanoke and Ruth B. Guthrie of Durham, N.C.; and a number of nephews and nieces.

Mildred Crawley Williams Barksdale

Funeral services for Mrs. Mildred Crawley Williams Barksdale will be held tomorrow at 2 p.m. with services at the Owens Grove Baptist Church.
The Rev. John Leigh will officiate.

Burial will follow in the Williams Family Cemetery.

Mrs. Barksdale, of Cherry Hill Church Road in South Boston, died Friday at Halifax Regional Hospital.

She was 100.

The family is receiving friends at the Cherry Hill Church Road residence.
Mrs. Barksdale was born in Halifax County, on August 26, 1903 and was the daughter of the late Mr. Sam Crawley and Mrs. Martha Jane Traynham Crawley.

She was first married to the late Mr. Robert Edward Williams and later married to the late Mr. Samuel Barksdale.

Mrs. Barksdale was a member of the Owens Grove Baptist Church.

Survivors include one son, Albert Williams and his wife Elizabeth of South Boston; a daughter, Kathryn Boxley of South Boston; two sisters, Susie Oliver Clay and Mildred Rogers, both of South Boston; one stepdaughter, Lake Hill of Hopewell; ten grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Samuel Earl Barksdale Sr.

Samuel Earl Barksdale Sr., 49, of 3241 Ball Park Loop, Halifax, died August 5, 2004 in Halifax.

He was born in Halifax County on June 8, 1955, the son of Emma Lee Womack Barksdale and the late Harvey Lee Barksdale. He was a member of Mayo Grove Baptist Church and New Bethel Baptist Church and was a U.S. Army Veteran.

Survivors include one son, Samuel E. Barksdale Jr. of Richmond; one sister, Stacy Barksdale of South Boston; six brothers, Robbin Barksdale of Danville, Harvey Barksdale of Greensboro, N.C., Alfred Barksdale of Lynchburg, Daniel Barksdale and Johnnie Barksdale, both of Halifax, and Sandy Barksdale of Hampton.

Funeral services for Mr. Barksdale will be held today, August 9 at 2 p.m. at New Bethel Baptist Church in Halifax with the Rev. Deane Clarke officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Nadine H. Bennett

Nadine H. Bennett, 69, of Randolph died August 9, 2004. She was the widow of Reuben C. Bennett.

Surviving are two sons, David Bennett and his wife, Joyce, Daryl Bennett and his wife, Tamara, all of Randolph; one daughter, Tammy Hall and her husband, Garnett, of Halifax; six grandchildren, Korin bennett, Michael Bennett, Timmy Bennett, Devin Hall, Drew Hall, and Dalyn Hall; two brothers, Garnett Harvey of Kansas and Gerald Harvey of Texas; and two sisters, Louise Hux of N.C. and Phyllis Elder of Brookneal.

Funeral services for Mrs. Bennett will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow, August 12, in the New Hope United Methodist Church, with burial in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Browning Funeral Home in Keysville from 7 to 8 this evening, August 11.

Isabel Scott Bolton

Isabel Scott Bolton, 77, of Saxe died August 9, 2004.

Mrs. Bolton is survived by her husband, Albert Matthew Bolton Jr.; four children, Kaye Bolton Lucado, Albert Matthew 'Matt' Bolton III, John Anthony 'Tony' Bolton, all of Saxe, Joan Bolton Tuck of Randolph and their spouses, David Lucado, Wanda Bolton and James S. Tuck; nine grandchildren, David Earl Lucado Jr., Paul Lucado, Jennifer Berkley, Suzanne Driskill, Melanie Currin, Matthew Bolton, Emily Bolton, Ryan Bolton and Jeremy Tuck; eight great-grandchildren, Julia Lucado, Trey Lucado, Kristen Lucado, Alyssa Berkley, Jarrett Driskill, Lonah Driskill, Ben Currin and Ethan Currin; two sisters, Joyce S. Wynn of Summerville, S.C. and Brenda S. Anderson of Richmond.

Mrs. Bolton was preceded in death by her parents, James W. Scott and Julia T. Scott; a sister, Dorothy S. Ailsworth; and two brothers, James R. Scott and David L. Scott.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today, August 11, 2004 in Lebanon United Methodist Church, Drakes Branch. The Rev. John Ward will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Robert B. Burton Jr.

Robert B. Burton Jr., 38, of Reidsville, N.C. died July 25, 2004. He was the son of Robert B. Burton Sr. and Alice Jean Lloyd, and a native of Halifax County.
Mr. Burton was employed with Culp Finishing and was a member of Providence Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Neatherly Potter Burton of the home; his mother of South Boston; his father and stepmother, Rebecca Burton of Blanch, N.C.; three daughters, Ashley Dean Burton of Lynchburg, Rachael Michelle Burton and Hannah Grace Burton of the home; one son, Justin Lee Burton of Jacksonville, N.C.; one sister, Teresa Sutula of Jacksonville; four brothers, Allen Dale Burton and Thomas Nola Martin, both of South Boston, Thomas Anthony Wade of Deneine, New Mexico, and Jimmy Carson Wade Jr. of Madison, N.C. He was preceded in death by one brother, Douglas Eugene Burton.

Graveside services for Mr. Burton will be held tomorrow, July 29 at 11 a.m. at Providence Baptist Church by the Rev. John W. Martin.

The family will receive friends this evening, July 28, from 7:00 until 8:30 at Marley Funeral Home in Yanceyville, N.C., and other times at the home of Robert Potter in Yanceyville, and Mr. and Mrs. Burton of Blanch.

William Wesley Burton

William Wesley Burton, 88, of 2119 Tobacco Road, Nathalie, died August 8, 2004, at The Woodview. He was the husband of the late Hessie Crews Burton.
Mr. Burton was born in Halifax County on February 12, 1916, the son of the late James Wesley Burton and Martha Marshall Burton. He was a member of Republican Grove Methodist Church and a retired farmer.

Survivors include one son, John Wesley Burton and his wife, Becky, of Nathalie; two daughters, Barbara B. Jefferson and husband, John, of Sandy Level, and Linda B. Saunders and husband, Louis, of Evington; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and one sister, Iris B. Swain of Richmond.

Graveside services for Mr. Burton will be held at 11 a.m. today, August 11, at Republican Grove Methodist Church by the Revs. Sam Caldwell and Robert Newcomb.
