Lizzie Odell Dugger Bracy Tucker
Funeral services for Mrs. Lizzie Odell Dugger Bracy Tucker will be held today at 1 p.m. at the Elkhorn Baptist Church in Nathalie with the Rev. Dr. C. Lewis Motley officiating.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Tucker of Elkhorn Road in Java, died Thursday at the Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C.
She was 82.
Mrs. Tucker was born in Greenville County, Va., on February 18, 1922 to the late Tommie Ray Dugger and Inez Haithcoach Dugger. Mrs. Dugger was first married to the late Ransome Bracy and later married to the late Willis Tucker.
She was a member of the Elkhorn Baptist Church.
Mrs. Tucker is survived by: five daughters, Mozell Hardy of Landover, Md., Esther Lee and Catherine Moody, both of Garysburg, N.C., Doretha English of Egg Harbor Township, N.J., Inez Bracy of DeLand, Fla. and Andrea Barksdale of Java; one son, Thomas Bracy of Camp Springs, N.C.; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; three sons-in-law, one daughter-in-law, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Mrs. Tucker was preceded in death by two brothers, Langford Dugger and Thomas Andrew Dugger.
Haywood Walker III
Haywood Walker III, 44, of Logan Street, South Boston , died September 27, 2004.
Mr. Walker was born in New York, N.Y. on February 15, 1960, the son of Haywood Walker Jr. and Nancy Lee Tucker Walker and was married to LaTasha Waller Walker. He was employed by Boston Lumber Company.
Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Diamond Walker; two stepsons, Jaheim Waller of South Boston and Justice Waller of Vernon Hill; his parents; seven brothers, Hal Walker of Brooklyn, N.Y., Harvey L. Walker, Harry J. Walker, Darren Maxell, Henley Walker, Roy Junior Hargrove and Lawrence Watson; three sisters, Wendy C. Walker, Darnice Jones and Melissa Mason; his mother-in-law, Sheila Edmonds; and his father-in-law, Alex Cook.
Funeral services for Mr. Walker were held October 2 at 3 p.m. at Fellowship Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert Wimbish officiating.
Pattie Beth Edmonds
Pattie Beth Edmonds, 88, of 2155 Asbury church Road, Vernon Hill, died October 2, 2004 at Berry Hill Nursing Home.
Ms. Edmonds was born in Halifax County on September 16, 1916, the daughter of the late Phil Edmonds and Melissa Womack Edmonds. She was a member of New Zion Baptist Church.
Survivors include one sister, Rebecca Sands of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews. Ms. Edmonds was preceded in death by one brother, William Edmonds; and two sisters, Lucille Womack and Gertrude Edmonds.
Funeral services will be held today, October 6 at 1 p.m. at Crawford House Chapel in Halifax. Burial will follow in New Zion Baptist Church Cemetery.
Roy Edward Elder
Roy Edward Elder, 69, formerly of Scottsburg, died October 3, 2004 at Woodview Nursing Home.
Mr. Elder was born in Campbell County on October 27, 1934, the son of the late William ‘Willie’ David Elder and Minnie Singleton Elder-Smith. He was of the Baptist faith and a retired farmer.
Survivors include one brother, Howard Elder of Nathalie; four sisters, Beatrice Fears of Danville, Minnie Weatherford of Petersburg, Susie Tanksley and Estella Guill, both of Nathalie; two stepbrothers, Charlie Smith of Roxboro, N.C. and Horace Smith Jr. of Charlottesville; one stepsister, Florence Hite of South Boston.
Mr. Elder was preceded in death by two sisters, Valerie Mae Hall and Hazel Butler-Wright; and three brothers, Arthur L. Elder, James W. Elder, and Barkley ‘Junior’ Elder.
A graveside service will be held today, October 6, at 2 p.m. in Falling River Baptist Church Cemetery. The Rev. Andrew Ferguson will officiate.
Joanna Hood Gardner
Joanna Hood Gardner, 82, of Williamsburg, formerly of Athens, Ga., and Halifax County, died October 3, 2004 at Williamsburg Hospice House.
Mrs. Gardner was born in New Castle, Pa. on May 24, 1922, the daughter of Willard H. and Helen Lyons Hood. She attended Penn State University.
During her years in Athens, Mrs. Gardner was a charter member of the Athens Hospital Auxiliary and continued her auxiliary work in South Boston. She was a 50 year member of DAR and Wimodausis.
Survivors include her husband, Dale W. Gardner; her son and daughter-in-law, Don and Selena Gardner of Gainesville, Ga.; her daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Gary Massie of Williamsburg; grandchildren, Tracey Gardner and husband, Michael Kelley, of Cummings, Ga., Scott Gardner of Atlanta, Ga., Erin Massie and her husband, Brad Hogge, Max Massie and Caitlin Massie, all of Williamsburg, and Allison Kelley.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Lucie Jones Whitlow Gravitt
Lucie Jones Whitlow Gravitt, 86, of 111 Wren Street, South Boston, died October 3, 2004 at her home.
Mrs. Gravitt was born in West Virginia on September 6, 1918, the daughter of the late Robert Jones and Bertha Matthews Jones. She was first married to Amos Thomas Whitlow and later to Claude Marcus Gravitt.
Mrs. Gravitt was of the Baptist faith.
Services will be held at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel today, October 6, at 1 p.m. Burial will follow in the Virgilina Cemetery.
Survivors of Mrs. Gravitt are one daughter-in-law, Althea Whitlow of South Boston; one sister, Vivian Stevens of Roanoke; three grandsons, Tony Whitlow, Jerry Duffer and Chris Duffer; six granddaughters, Tamara Whitt, Donna Francis, Vanessa Hughes, Renee Duffey, Candy Gravitt, and Tracy Hudson; 21 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by three sons, Charles Whitlow, Wilford Whitlow and Kenneth Gravitt; one daughter, Judy Newcomb; one grandson, Bryant Duffer; and one great-grandchild, Troy Madison Hughes.

Henry Ford Lowery
Henry Ford Lowery, 79, of Roxboro, N.C., died October 4, 2004 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mr. Lowery was born May 13, 1925, in Halifax County the son of the late Jessie Henry Lowery and Hallie Whitt Lowery, and was married to Maxine Watts Lowery. He was a member of Florence Avenue Baptist Church, a retired supervisor with Newport News Ship Building/Dry Dock, and was a U.S. Navy Veteran.
Funeral services will be held at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel today, October 6, at 4 p.m. with the Rev. Sean McKenzie officiating. Burial will follow in Halifax Memorial Gardens.
Survivors of Mr. Lowery include his wife; one daughter, Janice Hux and husband, Bill, of Virgilina; two sons, Wayne Lowery and wife, Phyllis, of Smithfield, and Steve Lowery of Charlotte, N.C.; two brothers, Bill Lowery of Hampton, and Roy Lowery of Virgilina; and one sister, Marie Dalton of Oxford, N.C.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, James, G.C., John D. and Ed Lowery; and two sisters, Rebecca Currin and Gladys Swain.

Raymond Lorraine Roberts
Raymond Lorraine Roberts, 81, of Madison, Wisc., died October 1, 2004 at Sebring Assisted Living Facility.
Mr. Roberts was born on November 17, 1922, in Halifax County, the son of Thomas Reekes Roberts and Lucy Careless Nash Roberts, and was first married to Margaret Hall Roberts, and later to Ann Currie Pieszak.
He was in the Army Air Force where he served with distinction in North Africa, Corsica and Italy as a crew chief. Mr. Roberts attended VPI, graduating with a degree in Agricultural Engineering. He was employed by Alster and Associates, retiring as Regional vice president of the company. He also served as a Boy Scout leader, and was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church.
Survivors include a son, Raymond Roberts and wife, Kathryn; daughters, Lynne Roberts Seigfried and husband, Dave, of Madison, Kay Roberts Day and husband, Lawrence, of Utica, N.Y., Lisa Pieszak of Orinda, Ca., ad Jennifer Pieszak Shiel, and husband, Barry, of Brookline, Ma.; a sister, Phebe Ward; and seven grandchildren.
A memorial service for Mr. Roberts will be held at 11 a.m. on October 15 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Madison.

Louise Lovelace Watson
Louise Lovelace Watson, 69, of 1412 Williams Street, South Boston, died October 3, 2004 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Ms. Watson was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on June 23, 1935, to the late Alphonso Allen Lovelace and Fannie Lee Lovelace.
Survivors include her companion, Benjamin Hunter; six daughters, Denise Ellis of Queens, N.Y., Tanya Watson, Shereice Hunter Beard, both of Brooklyn, N.Y., Tina Louise Watson and Kadedra Watson of Lexington, N.C.; three sons, Claude Watson of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Dwayne Watson of Rockville Center, Long Island, N.Y., and Tyrone Watson of Norfolk; one sister, Minnie Duncan of South Boston; one brother, Charles Lovelace of New York, N.Y.; 30 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Ms. Watson was preceded in death by one son, Ronald Watson.
Funeral services will be held October 7 at 1 p.m. at Crawford House Chapel in Halifax with the Rev. Sandy Palmer officiating. Burial will follow at Millstone Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family is receiving friends at the home.
Nannie Hall Chappell
Nannie Hall Chappell, 75, of 1200 Hunter Lane, South Boston, died October 4, 2004 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mrs. Chappell was born in Halifax County on December 25, 1928, the daughter of the late Schoolfield Hall and Mamie Petty Hall, and was married to the late James Chappell Sr. She was a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church in Virgilina.
Survivors include three sisters, Rosa Jones of Nathalie, Alberta Hall of Williamsburg, and Annie Mae Thaxton of South Boston; three brothers, McGuire Hall of South Boston, Carl Hall and John Hall, both of Alexandria; six stepchildren, James Chappell, Linwood Chappell, Harold Chappell, Doreatha Stovall, Hattie Sue and Charlotte Richardson, all of Md. Mr. Chappell was preceded in death by two brothers, Lawrence and Earlie Hall.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow, October 9, at 2 p.m. at Zion Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Thomas Bolden officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Emmogene Seamster Jones
Emmogene Seamster Jones, 56, of 1025 Harris Drive, South Boston, died September 30, 2004 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
She was born in Henderson, N.C. on April 15, 1948, the daughter of Albert Bernard Seamster and Della Adams Seamster.
Survivors include one son, Jason Lance Jones of South Boston; two brothers, Albert Seamster of Roxboro, N.C. and Robert H. Seamster of South Boston; and six half-sisters.
A graveside service for Ms. Jones will be held today, October 8, at 11 a.m. at Oak Ridge Cemetery with the Rev. Richard Saunders officiating.
Ryland Winn Hite
Ryland Winn Hite, 74, of Buffalo Springs died October 6, 2004 in South Boston.
Mr. Hite was born in Buffalo Springs to the late Overland Grey and Rosa Alice Griffin Hite, and was married to Marjorie Murray Hite. He retired from Burlington Industries Menswear Division with 45 years service, was a farmer and owner of H&B Farms. Mr. Hite attended Gravel Hill Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today, October 8, in the chapel at Watkins Cooper Lyon Funeral Home in Clarksville with the Rev. Bill McEntire officiating. Burial will follow in Grave Hill Cemetery.
In addition to his wife, survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Anthony Overton; his mother; one sister and brother-in-law, Joan H. and Carlton Bowen; and his grandchildren, Michelle, David and Thomas Grey Overton, all of Buffalo Junction.

Ethel Scott Dunn
Graveside services for Mrs. Ethel Scott Dunn will be held today at 11:30 a.m. at Ingram Christian Church Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Ed Moore officiating.
Mrs. Dunn of Mountain Road in Vernon Hill, died Friday, October 8, 2004, at the South Boston Manor.
She was 97.
She was born on October 19, 1906 and was married to the late Herbert Willingham Dunn.
Mrs. Dunn is survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

Louise Perkins Rinehardt
Louise Perkins Rinehardt, 87, of 228 Powell Road, South Boston, died October 8, 2004 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
She as born in Halifax County on January 10, 1917, the daughter of George Monroe Perkins and Lou Kate Perkins and was married to the late Coy R. Rinehardt. Mrs. Rinehardt was a member of Dan River Baptist Church.
Her survivors include one daughter, Betty R. Prozer of Branchville, N.J.; and one grandson, Joel Rinehardt of Fla.
A funeral service for Mrs. Rinehardt was held October 10, at 2 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Doug Gibson officiating. Burial followed in Oak Ridge Cemetery.
Frances Adea Strickland Allison
Frances Adea Strickland Allison, 92, of Port Orange, Fla., formerly of South Boston, died August 17, 2004.
Mrs. Allison was born in South Boston on September 2, 1911, the daughter of Edwin Jesse Strickland and Martha Ella Green Strickland. She was married to the late James Robert Allison Jr.
Survivors include one daughter, Ann Page Allison Malo of Port Orange; one son, Robert Edwin Allison of Key West, Fla.; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Allison was also preceded in death by four sisters, Melissa Elva Strickland, Jessie Green Strickland Lewis, Hazel Edith Strickland Daniel and Margaret Elise Strickland Wilder; and two brothers, Cecil Owen Strickland and William Lowell Strickland.
Graveside services will be held October 16 at 11 a.m. at Oak Ridge Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Russell Lee officiating.
