Edith Bowling Tucker
Funeral services for Mrs. Edith Bowling Tucker will be held at 2 p.m. today, with services at the Clover Bottom Baptist Church.
The Rev. James Crocker will officiate.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Tucker, of Cherry Creek Road in Nathalie, died Friday, October 15, 2004, at the Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Brookneal.
She was 81.
Mrs. Tucker was born in Coopers, West Virginia, on November 15, 1922, the daughter of the late William Bowling and the late Lora Lester Bowling.
She was married to Thelbert Starkey Tucker and was a member of the Clover Bottom Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband, survivors include one son, Steve Moore and wife Janice of Nathalie, one grandson, Steve Moore Jr. and wife Pam of Nathalie, one great-grandson, Thomas Moore of Nathalie, two sisters, Doris (Pat) Whitehead of Nathalie and Yvonne Keene and husband Elton of Hopkinsville, Ky.
Mrs. Tucker was preceded in death by two brothers, Lewis Bowling and Jimmy Bowling and one sister, Helen Moore.
The family will receive friends at the Cherry Creek Road residence of Steve and Janice Moore.
Memorials may be made to the North Halifax Volunteer Fire Department or the charity of your choice.
James Daniel Ewell
Mr. James, Daniel Ewell, of Sandy Beach Road in South Boston, died Friday, October 15, 2004, at the McGuire Veteran’s Administration Medical Center in Richmond.
He was 57.
Mr. Ewell was born in Halifax County on September 2, 1947, the son of George Ewell and the late Annie Barksdale.
He was a member of the St. Mark Baptist Church in Alton.
Mr. Ewell is survived by his father, two daughters, Stephanie Lipscomb of Baltimore, Md. and Tonya Ewell of Roxboro, one son, Michael Ewell of Baltimore, Md., four sisters, Georgia Thrower of Virginia Beach, Sally Malone of Alton, Amanda Crowder and Wanda Stephens of South Boston, three brothers, Willie Ewell, Sylvester Ewell and Phillip Ewell Sr., all of South Boston, two aunts, one uncle, one great-uncle, two grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephhews, other relatives and friends.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at the Jeffress Funeral Home Chapel and also at the home of his father, George Ewell, 6192 Philpott Road in South Boston.
A private funeral service will be held at a later date.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Turbeville Fire Department.
Larry Dale Hatchett
Larry Dale Hatchett, 60, of 2076 Brooklyn Road, Sutherlin, died October 14, 2004 at his home.
Mr. Hatchett was born in Bedford County, Tenn. on June 10, 1944, the son of the late Kennard Hatchett and Minnie Young Hatchett, and wasamarried to Hilda Fears Hatchett. He was self-employed, co-owner of Hilda’s Concessions and was former manager of Heck’s.
Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Michele and husband, Kelvin beck, of Dry Fork; one grandson, Jonathon Kent Beck of Dry Fork. He was preceded in death by one sister, Johneda Hatchett.
A funeral service for Mr. Hatchett was held Sunday, October 17, at 2 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Allen Holder officiating. Burial followed in Providence Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
Annie Vera Puryear Slagle
Funeral services for Mrs. Annie Vera Puryear Slagle will be held at Brooks Funeral Home at 2 p.m. today.
Interment will follow in Virgilina Cemetery.
Mrs. Slagle died Friday, Oct. 15, 2004 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
She was 101.
Mrs. Slagle was born on December 22, 1902 in Virgilina.
She was honored as the oldest high school graduate of Virgilina Public School on its 100th Anniversary in 1999.
She was also a member of the Union Christian Church in Virgilina.
Mrs. Slagle was a housewife and a merchant, and along with her husband, Willie, was in the grocery business in Virgilina for many years.
Mrs. Slagle was the daughter of James Franklin Puryear and Susan Tillotson of Virgilina. She was preceded in death by her husband, William (Willie) Robert Slagle Sr. and a daughter, Laraine Slagle, her oldest son, William Robert Slagle Jr., and two grandchildren, E.P. Slagle and Deborah Jo Fulghum and one great-grandchild, Rebecca Slagle McDonald.
She is survived by: two sisters, Mabel Gravitte of Roxboro, N.C., and Edith Adkins of Virgilina; a son, Jack L. Slagle and wife Hallie of South Boston; a daughter, Esther Slagle Fulghum and husband Robert of Danville; ten grandchildren, William Robert Slagle III and wife Carolyn of Cluster Springs, Roger Slagle and wife Libby of Cluster Springs, Virgil Slagle and wife Joyce of Columbia, S.C., John Slagle and wife Gail of Salisbury, N.C., Barry Slagle and wife Connie of Halifax, Garry Slagle and wife Jennifer of Halifax, Scott Slagle of Clarksville, Robert Slagle Fulghum of Chicago, David J. Fulghum of Ashville, N.C., and Joseph C. DeFoleschampe and wife Donna of Boston; 14 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Carlos Fredrick Ray
Funeral services for Mr. Carlos Fredrick Ray will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Brooks Funeral Home Chapel.
Mr. Ray of Westmoreland Street in South Boston, died Sunday, Oct. 17, 2004 at The Woodview.
He was 74.
Mr. Ray was born on December 16, 1929, in Illinois. He was the son of the late Hurshel and Susan Bell.
Mr. Ray was a retired security guard for the City of Richmond and a U.S. Army veteran.
He is survived by: two daughters, Kathy Ray Scott of South Boston and Judy Dale Ray of Colonial Heights; a son, Hurshel Warren Ray of Annapolis; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.
Mr. Ray was preceded in death by a daughter, Pamela Ray Stewart, and a son, Harry Edward Ray.

David Lee Ballou
Funeral services for Mr. David Lee Ballou will be held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Paul C.M.E. Church with the Rev. Louis Leigh Jr. officiating.
Burial will follow at Union Grove C.M.E. Church Cemetery.
Mr. Ballou, of Sinai Road, died Saturday, Oct. 16, 2004 at his residence.
He was 62.
Mr. Ballou was born in Halifax County on June 7, 1942 to David Jenkins Ballou and the late Ida Venable Ballou Barksdale and was married to Rebecca Louise Ballou.
He was a member of County Line Baptist Church.
Mr. Ballou is survived by: his wife, Rebecca Ballou; four daughters, Barbara Ballou Robertson of Severn, Md., Joan Stephens Hodnett of Milton, N.C., Monica Ballou Jones of Danville, Eric Ballou of South Boston; two sons, Donald Ballou and Shon Ballou, both of South Boston; four sisters, Ruby Leigh of Halifax, Leslie Turner of Oxon Hill, Md., Gabrielle Ballou and Jennifer Ballou Thompson, both of Albany, N.Y.; three brothers, Howard Barksdale of Glen Burnie, Md., Frank Ballou and Hal Barksdale, both of South Boston; one adopted brother, Anthony Cousins of Eden, N.C.; ten grandchildren; three sons-in-law; one daughter-in-law; an aunt, Mattie Rone Williams of Halifax; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Julia Louise Coles
Julia Louise Coles, 40, of 2121 Chester Rd., Clover, died October 16, 2004 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Ms. Coles was born in Halifax County on October 8, 1964, the daughter of the late Riley E. Coles Sr. and Martha Coles Coles. She was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church.
Her survivors include two children: Daries and Cierra Coles of Scottsburg; five sisters: Mary Dabbs of Peekskill, N.Y., Cheryl Darden, Gloria Coles, Clara Coles and Lou Coles of Scottsburg; three brothers: Earl Coles of Danville, Riley Coles Jr. of Clover, James Coles of Peekskill; two brothers-in-law: Joseph Mitchell of Nathalie and Antonio Darden of Scottsburg; and a sister-in-law: Maribel Coles of Peekskill.
A funeral will be held tomorrow, October 21, at 1 p.m., at Bethlehem Baptist Church with Rev. Mattie Carr. Burial will be held in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Bethlehem Baptist Church today, Oct. 20, from 7-8 p.m.
George Washington Hill
George Washington Hill died October 10, 2004 in Victoria.
Mr. Hill was born in Halifax Co. on September 3, 1917, to the late George and Effie Hill, and attended Mt. Bethel Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran receiving the Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal, American Theater Ribbon, European-African-Meddle Eastern Theater Ribbon. He was married to the late Essie Smithson.
His survivors include his siblings: Elsie Watson of New York City, N.Y., Verna Phifer (Walter) of Brooklyn, N.Y., Joyce Hill of Hyattsville, Md., Owen Hill (Dorothy) of Philadelphia, Penn.; three sisters-in-law: Pearl Hill of Philadelphia, Iola Adams of Victoria and Hattie Smithson of Amherst; and two brothers-in-law: Odies Smithson (Mildred) of Culpepper and Donald Smithson (Geraldine) of Elmsfont, N.Y. He was preceded in death by his siblings: Cedric, Howard, Leon, Aileen Hill, Pearl Fletcher, Theresa Harrison and Deloris Prunty.
A funeral service was held October 15 at Mt. Bethel Baptist Church, Kenbridge, with the Rev. C.L. Hobbs officiating.
Leslie Woodrow Ragland
Leslie Woodrow Ragland, 75, of Newark, N.J., died October 15, 2004 in Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Ragland was born on January 21, 1929 in Halifax County, the son of the late Willie D. Ragland and Lillie Alderson Ragland. He was a retired brick mason and was a Marine veteran of the Korean Conflict.
His survivors include a sister: Eldbridge (Izetta) Miller (Gordon) of Gretna. He was preceded in death by his wife: Gladys Ragland, and brothers and sisters: Wilfred and David Ragland, Lillie Medley, Florine Gunn and Geneva Ragland.
A memorial service will be held Sat., Oct. 23, at 1 p.m., at Miller Funeral Home.
Joseph Anthony Schleigh Sr.
Funeral services for Mr. Joseph Anthony Sleigh Sr., will be held Thursday, October 21, 2004, at 8 p.m., with services at the Brooks Funeral Home Chapel.
The Rev. Randy Holmes will officiate.
Mr. Schleigh died Tuesday, October 19, 2004, at his Nottingham Drive home.
He was 75.
Mr. Schleigh was born on December 4, 1928, in New York, the son of the late John R. Schleigh and the late Coletta Prozeller Schleigh.
He was employed by Slagle Fire Equipment and was a member of the Lions Club and the Knights of Columbus in New York.
Mr. Schleigh is survived by his wife, Delores Ann Elliott Schleigh, one son, Joseph Anthony Schleigh Jr., one brother, John Schleigh Jr., two sisters, Rita S. Dunne and Phyllis S. Barfield, one brother, William Schleigh, two grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Joan Marie Schleigh, and one grandson, Lindsey Womack.

Marvin W. Vasser
Former Halifax County native Marvin W. Vasser died Sunday, Oct. 17, 2004 at his residence in Titusville, Fla.
He was 76.
Mr. Vasser was born in Nathalie on Aug. 18, 1928 and had been a Florida resident for the past 40 years.
He was a retired employee of Johnson Controls at the Space Center.
Mr. Vasser is survived by: his son, Robert M. Horn; his daughter, Emily R. Caudill; four grandchildren, Robert W. Horn, Michael A. Horn, Kailey A. Caudill and Megan E. Caudill, and two sisters, Geraldine Moorefield and Audrey Hill, both of Virginia.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Westside Baptist Church in Titusville.
Burial will follow at the Brevard Memorial Park.
Curtis Ross Cunningham
Curtis Ross Cunningham, 72, of South Boston died October 19, 2004 at Duke Medical Center, Durham, N.C.
Mr. Cunningham was born February 27, 1932, to the late Essie and Eddie Cunningham. He was a member of Cross Roads Baptist Church and was married to the late Delilah Gilmore Cunningham.
His survivors include a son: Curtis Kelvin (Aretha) Cunningham; daughter: Valiria (Allohn) Willis; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, October 23, at 11 a.m., at Cross Roads Baptist Church. Burial will be held in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church Friday, from 6-8 p.m.
William R. Russell
William R. 'Bill' Russell Sr., 78, died October 19, 2004 at Moses Cone Hospital.
Mr. Russell was a native of Farmville, the son of Charles Bouldin and Mattie Sue Loftis Russell. He attended Guilford College and Wake Forest University.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Corp during WW II and is a J.P. Stevens retiree. He was a member of First Baptist Church and was a member of the Barnabus Sunday school class.
His survivors include his wife: Barbara Tuck Russell; children: Lynne Russell Riddick (Hank) of Columbia, S.C. and Robert Russell (Lisa) of Greensboro, N.C.; grandchildren: Lindsey and Bryan Riddick and Bryce, Robert and Matthew Russell; and a sister, Lillian Russell Ridgeway of South Boston.
A funeral service will be held today, Oct. 22. at 1 p.m., at the First Baptist Church with Dr. Stephen Pressley officiating. Burial will follow in Westminster Gardens Cemetery.
