Rupert Carroll Coates
Rupert Carroll Coates, 71, of Mountain Road, Halifax, died Friday, July 9, 2004, at his home.
Mr. Coates was the son of the late Walter H. Coates and Mae Tuck Coates and was married to Geraldine Tuck Coates.
Mr. Coates was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, the American Legion Post 8, and was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict.
Mr. Coates is survived by: his wife, Geraldine Tuck Coates of Halifax, and a number of nieces and nephews. He is predeceased in death by two brothers, John Thomas Coates and Ronald Carter Coates; one sister, Audrey Coates Walden; two half brothers, Willie P. Coates and Clarence Coates; and two half sisters; Lillian Coates Thornton Woody and Gertrude Coates Claytor.
Funeral services will be held Monday, July 12, at 2 p.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church, Halifax, with the Rev. David Booher and the Rev. Shelton Miles officiating. Burial will follow in Halifax Memorial Gardens.

Edith Canada Duncan Jennings
Edith Canada Duncan Jennings, 59, of Thompson Store Road, Vernon Hill, died Friday, July 9, 2004, in Charlotte County.
Mrs. Jennings was born in Halifax County on May 18, 1945, and was the daughter of Mrs. Carrie Sydnor Canada and the late Allen William Canada, Sr. She was married to Mr. Robert J. Jennings.
Mrs. Jennings is survived by her husband, Robert J. Jennings; for daughters, Mrs. Edith Christine Walker of South Boston, Ms. Eva Duncan of Alexandria, Ms. Laura Logan of Lynchburg, and Ms. Wanda Dunkley of South Boston; two sons, Clarence Duncan, Jr. of South Boston, and Jesse Duncan of Alta Vista; her mother, Mrs. Carrie Canada of South Boston; 20 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sons-in-law; four brothers-in-law; two sisters-in-law; six aunts, and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends, including the devoted Ms. Lucille Edmunds of South Boston.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 13 at 12 noon with services at the First Baptist Church on Ferry Street, with Rev. William Dixon officiating. Burial will follow in the Oak Ridge Cemetery.
The family is receiving friends at the residence, 3205 Thompson Store Road, Vernon Hill, and at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Donnell Walker, 112 Webster Street, South Boston.
Mason Anderson
Mason 'Doc' Anderson, 78, of 1173 Joe Jackson Trail, Halifax died July 10, 2004 at his home.
Mr. Anderson was born in Halifax County on September 29, 1925, the son of the late Jerry Lee Anderson and the late Mary Petty Anderson, and was married to Evelyn Easley Anderson. He was a member of Elkhorn Baptist Church and Hiram Lodge #2 AM&FM in Washington, D.C.
Survivors include his wife; his children, John A. Glass and wife, June, of Clinton, Md., Sarah Anderson of Laurel, Md., Erna M. Anderson of Capitol Heights, Md., Mason Anderson Jr. and wife, Lacreasha, of Germantown, Md., and Jerry L. Anderson and wife, Vernice, of Clinton; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for Mr. Anderson will be held July 17 at 11 a.m. at New Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. Willie N. Yancey officiating. Burial will follow in Elkhorn Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends July 16 from 6-9 p.m. at Dunn & Sons Funeral Home, 540 North Main Street, Halifax, and other times at the home.
William Hensley Hundley Jr.
William 'Bill' Hensley Hundley Jr., 78, of Greensboro, N.C. died July 12, 2004 at Moses Cone Hospital.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow, July 15 at Lawndale Baptist Church, of which he was a member, with the Rev. Dr. Joe Giaritelli officiating.
Mr. Hundley was a native of Fitzpatrick, WVa., the son of the late William Hensley Hundley Sr. and Bessie Mae St. Clair Hundley, and was married to Virginia Shaw Hundley. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served during World War II where he earned 11 battle stars and a citation from Admiral Nimitz. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a deacon at his church.
Mr. Hundley was a retired store manager with Tucker-Jones Furniture and was currently employed with Burtner Used Appliances.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Christine Parsons and Jo Robertson. His survivors include his wife; one son, William 'Bill' Hensley Hundley III and Cindy Nash of Greensboro; one brother, Dr. Ralph Hundley of Indianapolis, Ind.; four sisters, Mary Simpson of Roanoke, Norma Akers of Raleigh, N.C., Peggy Langford of Vienna, and Dorothy Straightift of Wilmington, Del.; three grandchildren, Martin Hundley, Elliott Hundley and Cindy Wilson; two great-grandchildren, Kayla Wilson and Hayley Wilson; and a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Ruby and Robert Robertson of Roanoke.
The family will receive friends this evening, July 14 from 7:00 until 9:00 at Forbis & Dick Funeral service North Elm Street.

Edward Brown Lindsey
Edward Brown Lindsey, 78, of Saxe died July 13, 2004.
Born November 28, 1915, in Campbell County, he was the son of the late Chapman Brown Lindsey and Alma Rice Lindsey. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lena Grove Lindsey; three infant children; four brothers, and one sister.
Survivors of Mr. Lindsey include three children, Michael W. Lindsey and his wife, Faye, of Clover, Dolly Lindsey Gilbert and husband, Jesse, of Forest, and Danny Lindsey of Randolph; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a half brother, Frank Lindsey of South Boston.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow, July 15 in the Southhall United Methodist Church with burial in the Saxe Community Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Browning Funeral Home in Keysville from 7:00 to 8:30 this evening, July 14.
John Thomas Moore
John Thomas Moore, 73, of Powell, Tenn. died July 11, 2004 at Baptist Hospital of East Tennessee, Knoxville.
Mr. Moore was born March 14, 1931 in Chatham, the son of Flournoy Bouldin Moore and Grace Elizabeth Marilla Moore, and was married to Bonnie Marshall Moore of the home. He entered the U.S. Navy in 1948, serving in the Korean Conflict and was a Machinist Mate Chief Senior Petty Officer. He graduated from Linestone College with cum laude honors, and before his retirement, Mr. Moore was a purchasing agent for Westinghouse Electric Corporation.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Johnny Moore; one daughter, Brenda Moore Wilson of Charlotte, N.C.; six brothers, Shelton Moore, Lawrence 'Phil' Moore, William 'Ruben' Moore, Douglas Moore and Keister Moore, all of Danville, and Kenneth Moore of Port Orange, Fla.; four sisters, Serrelya Blalock of Pfafftown, N.C., Jean Maggio of Port Orange, Anne Arbogast and Carolyn Meggison, both of Danville; one grandson; and one great-grandson.
Mr. Moore was also preceded in death by two brothers, Bouldin Moore and Guy Hoover Moore.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow, July 15 at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel in Danville at 11 a.m. Burial with Military Honors by American Legion Dan River Post #1097 Honor Guard will be at Danville Memorial Gardens.

Warren Harding Thomas
Warren Harding 'Fuzzy' Thomas, 83, of Clarksville died July 11, 2004 in South Boston.
The son of George W. and Eliza Redd Thomas, he was born in Mecklenburg County.
Graveside services were held July 13 at 11 a.m. at Gravel Hill Church Cemetery.
Mr. Thomas is survived by his nieces and nephews, Nancy Hatcher, Brenda Waggoner and Willie Lee Waggoner, all of South Boston, Roy Allen Waggoner of Chester, Walter Thomas of Virgilina, and Ann Smiley and Wayne Thomas, both of Clarksville.
Dorothy Mae Vassar
Dorothy Mae Vassar, 61, of 103 Rosehill Drive, South Boston died July 9, 2004 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Ms. Vassar was born in Halifax County on September 29, 1942, the daughter of John D. Vassar and Bessie Seay Vassar, both deceased. She was a member of Clover United Methodist Church.
Survivors include three sisters, Mary V. Tharpe of Clover, Joyce V. Moon of Saxe, and Mabel V. Hall of Evington. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a brother, John D. Vassar Jr.
Graveside services were held July 11 at 2 p.m. at Mt. Laurel United Methodist Church Cemetery. The Rev. Bonnie Pizzeck officiated.
Queen La’Bella Brown
Infant Queen LaBella Brown, daughter of Yolanda White and Derrick Brown died July 11, 2004 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Infant Brown is survived by her parents, of South Boston; one sister, Nya Brown of South Boston; one brother, derrick Brown Jr. of South Boston; her paternal grandfather, Charles Brown of Arlington; her maternal grandmother, Linda Henderson of Halifax; her great-grandmothers, Gertrude Byrd and Martha Brown, both of Halifax. She was preceded in death by two grandparents, Queen White and Alice Brown.
Graveside services were held July 15 at 3 p.m. at County Line Baptist Church Cemetery.
Florence Willetta D. Carrington
Florence Willetta Daniel Carrington, 76, of 1128 Alphonse Dairy Road, South Boston died July 13, 2004 at Berry Hill Nursing Home.
Mrs. Carrington was born in Mecklenburg County on November 9, 1927, the daughter of the late John Henry Daniel and Virginia Wilkerson Daniel and was married to the late James Irving Carrington. She was a member of Jeters Chapel Baptist Church.
Survivors include one sister, Mossie Meadows of Baltimore, Md.; four nephews, George and Randolph Scott, both of South Boston, Henry Daniel of Durham, N.C. and Rudy Daniel of Baltimore.
Funeral services for Mrs. Carrington will be held tomorrow, July 17 at 2 p.m. at Jeters Chapel Baptist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery.

John Nathaniel Morton
John Nathaniel Morton, 56, of 403 Rosser Avenue, South Boston died July 9, 2004 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mr. Morton was born in New York on April 12, 1948, the son of John Morton Sr. and the late Marjorie Taylor Johnson and was married to the late Sheila Betts Morton. He was a member of St. Luke Apostolic Church.
Survivors include his father of Clover; two daughters, Denisha Morton of South Boston and LaQuan Morton of New York; two sisters, Marjorie Brinkley of Baltimore, Md. and Brenda Fox of New York; two brothers, Walter Morton of Decatur, Ga. and Kenneth Johnson of Teaneck, N.J.; six grandchildren; one stepson, Lamont Thomas of South Boston; and his father and mother-in-law, Bishop and Mrs. Harry Betts Sr. of South Boston.
Funeral services for Mr. Morton will be held today, July 16 at 1 p.m. at St. Luke Apostolic Church with Elder Harry J. Betts officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery.
Annie Jones Sydnor
Annie Jones Sydnor, 87, of North Main Street, Halifax died July 10, 2004 at Berry Hill Nursing Home.
Mrs. Sydnor was born in Halifax County on June 7, 1917, the daughter of the late Walter Jones and Olivia Dodson Jones, and was married to the late Owen Sydnor. She was a member of Banister Hill Baptist Church, and was a retiree of J.P. Taylor Tobacco Company.
Survivors include one son, John Traynham and daughter-in-law, Mavis Traynham, of Ft. Washington, Md.; two sisters, Lottie Traynham of Clover and Mildred Brown of New Haven, Conn.; nine grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
After 5 p.m. today, July 16, the remains will lie-in-state at Crawford House, 721 N. Main Street, Halifax, where funeral services will be held July 17 at 11 a.m.
The Rev. Mattie Carr will officiate. Burial will follow in Banister Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.
Charles Henry Snead III
Charles Henry Snead III, 50, of Chase City, formerly of Halifax County, died July 14, 2004 at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Mr. Snead was born in Halifax County on August 2, 1953, the son of the late Charles Henry Snead Jr. and Irene Pleasants Snead. He was married to Linda Toombs Snead and was a member of Bethel Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors of Mr. Snead include his wife; his mother of Clover; two daughters, Tanisha Smith of Chase City and Felicia Snead of Boydton; two sons, Devon Dunaway of Birmingham, Ala. and Christopher Snead of Chase City; five sisters, Gwendolyn Harp Vaughan and Sheena Price, both of Detroit, Mich., Sharon Smith of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla., Yvette Dunkley and Shernitha Douglas, both of Clover; two brothers, Reginald Snead of Oswego, N.Y. and Ronnie Snead of Drakes Branch; four grandchildren; and his grandmother, Angie Vaughters Snead of Randolph.
Funeral services for Mr. Snead were held July 18 at 2 p.m. at Bethel Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. William Hicks officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Robert Edwin ‘Bobby’ Winstead
Funeral services for Robert Edwin “Bobby” Winstead of Spring Avenue South Boston, will be held today, July 19, at 2 p.m. with services at First Baptist Church, Ferry Street, South Boston.
Mr. Winstead died Friday, July 16, 2004, at Halifax Regional Medical Center.
He was 58.
Mr. Winstead was born to the late Edwin Winstead and Louise Vass Winstead on November 21, 1945, and was married to Judith Coleman Winstead. He was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church, was a U.S. Army veteran, and was employed with Sprint.
Mr. Winstead is survived by his wife: Judith Coleman Winstead; one son, Derick Winstead of Fort Bragg, N.C.; one daughter, Miss Brandi LaShell Winstead of the home; his mother, Mrs. Louise Winstead of South Boston; two grandchildren, Mountour D. Winstead and Kianna T. Winstead; his daughter-in-law, Mrs. Yvette W. Winstead; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
The family will receive friends at the home and also at the home of Mrs. Louise Winstead, 1813 North Main Street in South Boston.
Agnes Warren Daniel
Agnes Warren Daniel, 79, of Roxboro, N.C. died July 19, 2004 at Person Memorial Hospital.
Born in Lakeland, Fla. she was the daughter of the late C.E. Warren and Gussie Warren, stepdaughter of the late Claudia Warren. She is preceded in death by two brothers, Morris and Eugene Warren.
Mrs. Daniel is survived by her husband, Dr. Earl W. Daniel; one sister, Annie Mae Fogler of Whittier, Calif; two daughters, Margaret Daniel Bradsher and husband, David, of Roxboro, and Katherine Daniel Baxter and husband, John, of Burlington, N.C.; three grandsons, Larry "Guy' Ferguson Jr. and his wife, Bonnie, of Summerfield, N.C., Fred Ferguson and wife, Sally, of Fuquay Varina, N.C. and Jason Baxter of Raleigh, N.C.; two step-grandsons, David Bradsher Jr. and wife, Pilar, and Matt Bradsher, all of Raleigh; great-grandchildren, Daniel, Casey, Abbey and Reed Ferguson; and two step-great-grandchildren, Tyler and Jessica Leli.
She was a member of Roxboro Baptist Church and sang in the choir, was a past Sunday school teacher and member of the WMU. Mrs. Daniel was a member of the West Baraca Sunday school class, a member of the Antique Automobile Association and served as Tour chairperson. She was instrumental in the organization of the Roxboro Exchangette Club, served as president of the ladies auxiliary of the NC Chiropractic Association, and served as a precinct judge and registrar with the Person County Board of Elections.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow, July 22 at Roxboro baptist Church with the Rev. DePre Sanders officiating. Burial will follow at Person Memorial Cemetery.
The family will receive friends this evening, July 21 at Brooks & White Funeral Home in Roxboro from 7:00 until 8:30.

L.C. Glass, 79, of 14174 Mountain Road, Vernon Hill died July 18, 2004 at his home.
Mr. Glass was born January 20, 1925, in Halifax County the son of the late William H. and Julia K. Glass and was married to Adell Ferrell Glass, who survives.
He was a member of Mountain grove Missionary Baptist Church, a member of the Trustee Board and Cemetery Committee.
Survivors in addition to his wife include four daughters, Julia L. Powell and Peggy A. Glass, both of South Boston, Sheila V. Wimbush of Vernon Hill and Annette M. DeJournette and husband, Cleveland, of Danville; two brothers, William Glass and wife, Mae Lizzie, of South Boston, and James William and wife, Dorcus, of Spring Garden, N.Y.; six sisters, Hattie Womack and Mildred Wood, both of Danville, Marie Crews, Hazel Glass, Fannie Stephens and husband, Jack, all of South Boston, and Anna Palmer and husband, Earl, of St. Petersburg, Fla.; 13 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for Mr. Glass will be held tomorrow, July 22, at 1 p.m. at Mountain Grove Missionary Baptist Church with Dr. Arthur E. Crews officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Viewing will be from 4-8 p.m. today, July 21 at the chapel of Howerton Funeral Home in Chatham.
