Derick Charles Eli Hammock
Mr. Derick Charles Eli Hammock, 19, of Cedar Lane, Halifax, died Wednesday, July 21, 2004, at his home.
He was born in Birmingham, Alabama, on March 23, 1985.
He was the son of Charles Rickie Hammock and Sandi Mauldin Hammock.
Mr. Hammock was a graduate of Halifax County Senior High School, a member of the First Presbyterian Church in South Boston, the Halifax Volunteer Fire Department and the News Ferry Hunt Club.
He is survived by: his mother, Sandi Mauldin Hammock of Halifax; two sisters, Amanda Hammock and fiance Rolando Toyos of Memphis, TN, Christie Noblin and husband Steve of Halifax; his grandmother, Dorothy Armstrong Hammock of Red Bay, Alabama; two nephews, Tyler Wayne Noblin and Aaron Elijah Noblin, both of Halifax; and a number of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
A memorial service was held Saturday, July 24, with the Rev. Dr. Russell Lee, the Rev. Ed Melvin and the Rev. Terry Blevins officiating.

Harvey Christopher Baynes
Harvey Christopher Baynes, 82, of Roanoke, passed away Friday, July 23, 2004.
A funeral service was held Monday, July 26, 2004 at Oakey’s Funeral Service and interment followed at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Roanoke.
Mr. Baynes was a native of Halifax County and was married to Virginia Green Baynes, formerly of South Boston.
Mr. Baynes was a retired Exxon employee and drove charter buses for a number of years.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Baynes is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Larry Rakes of Roanoke, two sisters, Essie B. Tune of Roanoke and Ruth B. Guthrie of Durham, N.C.; and a number of nephews and nieces.
Robert B. Burton Jr.
Robert B. Burton Jr., 38, of Reidsville, N.C. died July 25, 2004. He was the son of Robert B. Burton Sr. and Alice Jean Lloyd, and a native of Halifax County.
Mr. Burton was employed with Culp Finishing and was a member of Providence Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Neatherly Potter Burton of the home; his mother of South Boston; his father and stepmother, Rebecca Burton of Blanch, N.C.; three daughters, Ashley Dean Burton of Lynchburg, Rachael Michelle Burton and Hannah Grace Burton of the home; one son, Justin Lee Burton of Jacksonville, N.C.; one sister, Teresa Sutula of Jacksonville; four brothers, Allen Dale Burton and Thomas Nola Martin, both of South Boston, Thomas Anthony Wade of Deneine, New Mexico, and Jimmy Carson Wade Jr. of Madison, N.C. He was preceded in death by one brother, Douglas Eugene Burton.
Graveside services for Mr. Burton will be held tomorrow, July 29 at 11 a.m. at Providence Baptist Church by the Rev. John W. Martin.
The family will receive friends this evening, July 28, from 7:00 until 8:30 at Marley Funeral Home in Yanceyville, N.C., and other times at the home of Robert Potter in Yanceyville, and Mr. and Mrs. Burton of Blanch.
Hazel Lorain Claiborne Gatewood
Hazel Lorain Claiborne Gatewood, 57, formerly of South Boston, died July 21, 2004.
Graveside services for Mrs. Gatewood will be held tomorrow, July 31, at 4 p.m. at Five Forks Baptist Church Cemetery with the Revs. Sandy Palmer and Moses Dixon officiating.
Lena Frances Good
Lena Frances Good, 76, of South Boston died July 29, 2004 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
She was born December 20, 1927, in Halifax County the daughter of Henry and Cora Good.
Funeral arrangements will be handled by Powell Funeral Home. They were incomplete at press time.
Arthur Kendrick Hite
Arthur Kendrick Hite, 85, of Clarksville, husband of Shannon Tillotson Hite, died July 27, 2004 in South Boston.
Born in the Buffalo Springs area, he was the son of Steven Bedford and Emma Owen Hite.
Retired from Burlington Industries, Mr. Hite was a deacon and trustee of Antioch Baptist Church and served on the cemetery committee.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today, July 30 at Antioch Baptist Church with the Rev. Greg Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Hite is survived by a daughter, Judy Hite Williams of Chase City; one son, Wendell Kendrick Hite of South Boston; sisters, Josie Jones of Clarksville and Lottie Boyd of South Boston; grandchildren, Wendy Lee Knott, Stuart Kendrick Hite, Elaine Kelly Bluhm, Rhonda W. Witt; and great-grandchildren, Kelsey Lee Knott, Allie Bluhm, Erich Bluhm, Danielle Witt and Darcy Witt.
Frances Maxey Turnbull
Frances Maxey Turnbull, 87, of Clarksville died July 28, 2004 in Clarksville.
Born in Clarksville, she was the daughter of the late George Claiborne and Vivian Jones Maxey and was married to the late Irby Turnbull Jr.
A retired teacher, Mrs. Turnbull taught in Halifax and Mecklenburg counties. She was a member of Clarksville Baptist Church where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow, July 31. The Rev. Wade Tucker will officiate. Burial will be private.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Keith Martin of Hyde Park, Vt.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Irby III and Kay Turnbull of Boydton and George and Susan Turnbull of Elmo; four granddaughters and three grandsons.
The family will receive friends from 7:30 until 9:00 this evening, July 30, at Watkins Cooper Lyon Funeral Home in Clarksville.

Laura Juanita Hudson Wallace
Laura Juanita Hudson Wallace, 93, of Halifax died July 26, 2004 at the Woodview.
Mrs. Wallace was born in Halifax County on November 1, 1910, the daughter of the late Charles Paul Hudson and Alice J. Hudson, and was married to the late Frank Wallace. She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church.
Funeral services will be held today, July 30 at 11 a.m. at Christ Episcopal Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Survivors of Mrs. Wallace include one sister, Alice French of Palm Springs, Fla.; one grandson, James Ross of Halifax; five great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; two step-great-grandchildren; one step-great-great-grandson; and devoted friends, Calvin and Pauline Younger of Halifax.
Catherine Delaney Yeatman
Catherine Delaney Yeatman, 4-year-old daughter of Alfred M. and Michelle Anderson Yeatman, died July 27, 2004 at her home in Fredericksburg.
Other than her parents she is survived by her brother, Trevor, and a sister, Corrin, both of the home; maternal grandfather, Phillip Anderson of Nathalie; paternal grandparents, John and Rebecca Harrington of Fredericksburg, Alfred M. Yeatman Jr. of Newport News. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandmother, Catherine Moore Hudgins.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today, July 30, at St. George’s Episcopal Church in Fredericksburg with the Revs. Joan Peacock and Tricia Hamilton Mack officiating. A graveside service will be held at Halifax Memorial Gardens Saturday, July 31 at 1 p.m.
Linda Lee Chatten
Linda Lee Chatten, 52, of 1018 Robin Trail, Vernon Hill, died August 23, 2004 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mrs. Chatten was born in Baltimore, Md. on January 21, 1952, the daughter of the late William and Norma Downey.
Survivors include one daughter, Nancy Coleman; and two grandchildren.
Graveside services for Mrs. Chatten were held August 31 at noon in the Shockoe Baptist Church Cemetery.
Betty Little Long
Betty Little Long, 65, of Roxboro, N.C., died August 31, 2004 at Person Memorial Hospital in Roxboro.
Born in Halifax County, she was the daughter of the late Robert Lee and Martha Wilson Little, and the wife of the late Emmitt Long. She worked for Longhurst Cotton Mill.
Survivors include one son, Emmitt Long Jr. of Roxboro; one daughter, Teresa L. Regan of Roxboro; two grandchildren, Bradley Regan and Emily Regan. Mrs. Long was preceded in death by one sister, Bernice Snead.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow, September 2, at Brooks & White Funeral Home Chapel in Roxboro by the Rev. Blanche Gilbert. Burial will follow in Burchwood Cemetery.
The family will receive friends this evening, September 1, from 7:00 until 8:30 this evening at the Funeral Home.
Jacob T. Sims Sr.
Jacob T. Sims Sr., 78, of Baltimore, Md., formerly of Halifax County, died August 14, 2004.
Mr. Sims was born in Scottsburg on May 3, 1926, the son of the late Patrick H. Sims and Lillian B. Sims and was married to Frances Young Sims. He was a United States Navy Veteran.
Survivors include his wife; four children and three sons-in-law, Yvonne Turner and husband, Jeffery, of Woodstock, Darlene Copeland and husband, Adiel, of Atlanta, Ga., Jacob Sims Jr. of Baltimore, and Angela Ceja and husband, Jerry, of Denver, Colo.; 10 grandchildren, OSC Terrance R. Sims and wife, Christina, of the US Navy, San Diego, Calif, Shawnee, Linda, Samantha, Michele, Patrick, Samuel, Imani, Dominique and Jerry Jr.; three great-grandchildren, Cori Page, Taylor Jacob and LaHav; two sisters, Margaret Carden of Scottsburg and Josephine Tanner of Richmond; and one brother, Edward Sims of Scottsburg.
Funeral services for Mr. Sims were held August 20 at 11 a.m. at New All Saints Roman Catholic Church at Liberty Heights Avenue, Baltimore, Md. Father Edward Miller officiated.
Geneva Tuck Anderson
Mrs. Geneva Tuck Anderson of South Boston, died Thursday, Sept. 2, 2004 at Halifax Regional Medical Center.
She was 69.
She was born in North Carolina in 1935.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.
William McKinley Hawkins
William McKinley Hawkins, 88, of Hunting Creek Road, Crystal Hill died September 2, 2004 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mr. Hawkins was born in Halifax County on February 7, 1916, the son of the late William Henry Hawkins and Emma Johnson Hawkins and was married to the late Lottie Mae Williams Hawkins. He was a World War II Army Veteran.
Survivors include one daughter, Patricia Thaxton of Nathalie; one son-in-law, James Roger Thaxton of Nathalie; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for Mr. Hawkins will be held Sunday, September 5, at 11 a.m. at Crawford House Chapel in Halifax with the Rev. James E. Traynham officiating. Burial will follow in the Hawkins Family Cemetery.
The family is receiving friends at the home of Mr. and Mrs. James Thaxton, 1068 Dr. Lacy Trail, Nathalie.
David Nathaniel Jones, Jr.
David Nathaniel Jones Jr., 57, of Danville died August 31, 2004 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
He was born July 17, 1947, in Milton, N.C. the son of the late David Jones Sr. and the late Jewell Carrington Jones.
Survivors of Mr. Jones include two daughters, Vanessa Boynton of Charlotte, N.C. and Carletta Jones of Roanoke; one son, Orlando Glass of Halifax County; two sisters, Carletta Bauldwin of Alton and Melissa Brandon of Virginia Beach; two brothers, Terry Jones and Eustice Jones, both of Danville; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services for Mr. Jones will be held tomorrow, September 4 at 1 p.m. at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Cross Roads Baptist Church Cemetery in Turbeville. The Rev. Preston Medley will officiate.
The family will receive friends at the home of his sister, Carletta Bauldwin, 2095 Coleman Drive, Alton.
Julian Sizemore
Former Halifax County Clerk of Court Julian Sizemore died Sunday, Sept. 5, 2004 at his home in Halifax.
Sizemore served as clerk of court from 1975-1988 and as deputy clerk of clerk from 1955-1975.
The Halifax County native was a member of Beth Car Baptist Church, where he had served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher.
Mr. Sizemore was a charter member of the Halifax Lions Club and also a member of the Halifax Fire Department.
He graduated from William and Mary College in 1943, and served in the Air Corps from 1943-1945. He worked for the Commissioner of Revenue from 1946-1955, when he became Halifax County Deputy Clerk of Court.
Born October 19, 1920, he was a son of Georgia and Richard Sizemore of Halifax County.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy Chaffin Sizemore, one daughter, Alice Sizemore Graves of Roanoke, two sons, Richard Hall Sizemore of Richmond and Ray Sizemore of Waterloo, South Carolina; two stepchildren, Kathryn Holt Pearson of Richmond and Richard Holt of Wayne, Pennsylvania; three grandchildren, five step-grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Roselle Bell Sizemore.
Geneva Tuck Anderson
Geneva Tuck Anderson, 69, of 1300 North Main Street, South Boston died September 2, 2004 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
She was born in North Carolina on February 28, 1935, the daughter of William Irby Tuck and Minerva Thomas Tuck.
Mrs. Anderson was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Survivors include one son, Gregory Long of Danville; two daughters, Cynthia Alldred Watson of Ringgold, and Diane Alldred Ches of Owens Mill, Md.; her mother of South Boston; two brothers, Robert Curtis Tuck and Ray Nathaniel Tuck, both of South Boston; three grandchildren, Jaime Watson and Rachael Watson, both of Ringgold, and Benjamin Estes of Richmond; and three great-grandchildren.
A funeral service for Mrs. Anderson was held September 4 at 11 a.m. at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mack Bugg officiating. Burial followed in Halifax Memorial Gardens.
