Funeral services for Mrs. Frances Williams Brown will be held Tuesday, September 14, 2004, at 2:30 p.m. at the Wesley Chaple C.M.E.
The Rev. Michele Parker will officiate.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Brown, of Porter Lane in South Boston, died Friday, September 10, 2004, at her residence.
She was 66.
Mrs. Brown was born in Halifax County on January 28, 1938, the daughter of the late Vernell Lacy Beard and was reared by Acre Williams and the late Frances Williams.
She was married to Charlie Brown and was a member of Wesley Chapel C.M.E. Church.
Mrs. Brown is survived by her husband; two daughters, Tina Brown and Iris Brown, both of South Boston; four sons, Carl Williams of South Boston, Kenneth Williams, Michael Williams and Charlie Brown, all of Brooklyn, NY; her father; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; six uncles; four aunts; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
The family will receive friends at the chapel of Jeffress Funeral Home Monday from 7 until 8 p.m.
Ernest Carrington Farmer
A visitation service for Mr. Ernest Carrington Farmer will be held Tuesday, September 14, 2004, from 11 a.m. until noon at the Jeffress Funeral Home Chapel.
The Rev. William Dixon will officiate.
Burial will follow in the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church cemetery.
Mr. Farmer, of Landover, Md. and formerly of Halifax County, died at Prince George's Community Hospital Center.
He was 62.
Mr. Farmer was born in Elizabeth, NJ. on November 29, 1942 was was the son of Arthur and Myrtle Arnold. He was reared by his grandfather, the late Ernest R. Farmer and was a member of the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.
He is survived by his companion, Christine Bell; two daughters, Gloria Deyo of Alexandria and Jacqueline Farmer of Forestville, Md; one son, Ernest Farmer Jr. of Washington; two step-daughters, Rosa Bell of Landover, Md. and Novella Whitman of Forestville, Md.; four brothers, Jessie Boxley, Kester Boxley and Alexander Boxley, all of South Boston, and Arthur Arnold of Union, NJ; 10 grandchildren; two sisters-in-law; a devoted friend, Harold Owens of South Boston and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Dean Monroe Puryear
Funeral services for Mr. Dean Monroe Puryear, retired county magistrate and owner of Puryear Farms and Puryear Tires, will be held Monday, September 13, at 2 p.m. with services at the Brooks Funeral Home Chapel.
The Revs. Don Davdson and Jason Bryant will officiate.
Burial will follow in the Cherry Hill United Methodist Church cemetery.
Mr. Puryear, of Huell Matthews Highway in South Boston, died Saturday, September 11, 2004, at the Duke University Medical Center.
He was 75.
Mr. Puryear was born in Danville on October 29, 1928, the son of the late Lottie Francis Toler Puryear and the late Samuel Ernest Puryear Sr.
He was a member of Cherry Hill United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Rebecca Clark Puryear; two sons, Grayson Dean Puryear Sr. and wife Gail and John Samuel Puryear and wife Kathreen; one daughter, Patsey Puryear Harris, all of South Boston; one brother, S.E. "Poochie" Puryear Jr. and wife Dorris of Raleigh, NC; six grandchildren, Grayson Dean Puryear Jr., and wife Carol, Becky Clark and husband Dennis, Michael Dean Harris, Brandy Harris Oakley, Sydney Puryear and Madison Puryear; and one great-grandchild, Eric Oakley.

Henry Norman Weatherford
Henry Norman ‘Skip’ Weatherford, 92, of 1502 Moore Street, South Boston died September 9, 2004 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mr. Weatherford was born April 26, 1912, in South Boston the son of the late Charles Wellons Weatherford and Angel Itura Norman Weatherford and was married to Ruby Clark Weatherford.
Mr. Weatherford was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church and was retired from the U.S. Postal Service.
Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Shirley Weatherford Gathright of Richmond; one son, Marshall Norman ‘Skip’ Weatherford of Hampton; four grandchildren, Heath Gathright of Mechanicsville, James Gathright of Waynesboro; Sandra Ann Weatherford of Hampton, and Amy Weatherford Brown of Amissville; and one great-grandchild, Emily L. Brown of Amissville. Mr. Weatherford was preceded in death by a brother, Raymond Weatherford.
A funeral service will be held today, September 13, at Powell Funeral Home Chapel at 11 a.m. The Rev. Bob Johnston will officiate. Burial will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery.

Joseph Drew Jr.
Joseph Drew Jr., 42, of Edison, N.J. died Sept. 9, 2004 in New Jersey.
Born in Halifax County on July 1, 1962, he was the son of Joseph Drew Sr. and Jeraline Gallimore Drew, and was a member of Mt. Hope Baptist Church in Metuchen, N.J.
Funeral services for Mr. Drew will be held tomorrow, September 16 at 2 p.m. at Salem Baptist Church in Red Oak with the Rev. Harry Lee Williams officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Survivors include one daughter, Jessica Drew of New Jersey; one son, Russell Drew of Dover, N.J.; his parents of Scottsburg; two sisters, Sylvia Lockette of Lake Hopatcong, N.J. and Cynthia Drew of Marbleton, Ga.; and one brother, Johnny Drew of Dover.
The family will receive friends at the home of his parents, 2211 Dryburg Road, Scottsburg.
Carl W. Furches
Carl W. Furches of Johnson City, Tenn. died September 12, 2004 at the age of 90.
He is survived by four sons, Carl E. Furches and wife, Ronnia, of South Boston, Billy Jack Furches and wife, Susan, of Greenville, S.C., Bob Furches and wife, Nancy, of Talbott, and James Furches and wife Betty, of Johnson City; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Mr. Furches was preceded in death by his wife, Pearl Furches.
Funeral services will be conducted by Morris-Baker Funeral Home in Johnson City on September 14.
Sloan Miller
Sloan Miller, 63, of Cluster Springs died September 10, 2004 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Friday, September 17, 2004 at 2 p.m. at Owens Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. John Leigh officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Mr. Miller was born in Halifax County on March 13, 1941, the son of the late John Henry Miller and Annie Frances Mason Miller. He was a member of Owens Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include six sisters, Joan Johnson of Cluster Springs, Ruth Smith of Brooklyn, N.Y., Pauline Gorden and Kay Swift of Orlando, Fla., Regina Bouldin of Bronx, N.Y. and Elizabeth Crowder of Mayo; and one brother, Lawrence Miller of Cluster Springs.

Nancy Russell Morgan

Mrs. Morgan of Vaughan Street in South Boston, died Friday, Sept. 17, 2004 at her residence at the age of 67.
She was born in Halifax County on November 29,1936, the daughter of Rebecca Bowen Russell and the late Frank Otto "Red" Russell. She was married to John Morgan.
Mrs. Morgan was a retired book keeper for Maddox Oil Company and a member of the McCanless Memorial UMC for over 50 years, where she was a member of the U.M.W, treasurer of the Memorial Fund and a choir member.
Mrs. Morgan is survived by: her husband, John Morgan; a son, Ralph Morgan and wife Raquel of South Boston; two grandsons, Justin and Jamie Morgan, both of South Boston; an aunt, Lucille Hobstetter of South Boston; a sister-in-law, Lillian Thomas of South Boston; a niece, Patricia Long of Wilmington, N.C.; a nephew, Billy Thomas and wife Sharon of South Boston; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Luther Hunter Rudd
Funeral services for Halifax County native Mr. Luther Hunter Rudd will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Sunflower Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert Tucker officiating.

Mr. Rudd of Durham, N.C., died Thursday, Sept. 16, 2004 at Veterans Administration Medical Center in Durham.
He was 65.
Mr. Rudd was born in Halifax County on March 27, 1939, and was the son of the late Garland Rudd and Annie Mayo Rudd.
He was an Army veteran, a member of the Union Baptist Church in Durham, and a former member of the Sunflower Baptist Church.
Mr. Rudd is survived by: a companion, Marion Edwards Rudd; seven sisters, Margaret Bates of Vernon Hill, Mary E. Rudd of Halifax, Thelma B. Connelly and Julia Whitaby, both of New Haven, Conn., Mattie Kay and Nannie Rhone, both of Philadelphia, and Hattie McGregor of Cromwell, Conn.; three brothers, John Garland Rudd of Philadelphia, William Rudd of Baltimore, and Billy Darnell Rudd of Hamden, Conn.; two step-children, Clifton Edwards and Shirley Edwards, both of Durham; three step-grandchildren; four brothers-in-law; three sisters-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by a brother, James Rudd.
Hewill Henry Throckmorton
Mr. Hewill Henry Throckmorton of South Boston died Friday, Sept. 17, 2004 at his home.
Mr. Throckmorton was born October 23, 1929, in Halifax County and was 74-years-old at the time of his death.
He was the son of the late Abraham Walter Throckmorton and the late Nora Vaughan Throckmorton and was married to Virginia Lacks Throckmorton of South Boston.
He was a member of the Scottsburg Baptist Church and was a retired excavator.
Mr. Throckmorton is survived by his wife; one daughter, Phyllis T. Hudson and husband Donnie of Scottsburg; one son, Larry Throckmorton of Scottsburg; one sister, Eulalia T. Thomas of Scottsburg; one stepson, Danny Moorefield and wife Dorothy of Halifax; one stepdaughter, Nancy Estes and husband Skip of Roanoke; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Evelyn Beatrice Throckmorton.
Funeral services for Mr. Throckmorton were held yesterday at Scottsburg Baptist Church, with the Rev. Terry Scearse officiating.
Burial was at Oakland Cemetery in Scottsburg.

Weldon Harris Thrower
Mr. Weldon Harris Thrower, 81, of East Hyco Road in South Boston, died Saturday, Sept. 18, 2004 at Hunter Holmes McGuire Virginia Medical Center.
Mr. Thrower was born May 9, 1923, in Person County, N.C., the son of the late Thomas Jefferson Thrower and Rena Harris Thrower, and was married to Lois Cole Thrower of South Boston.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, a retired corrections officer at Camp 23 in Halifax County, and a member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church.
Weldon Harris Thrower is survived by his wife; one daughter, Rosa Lee Newton Eades of Halifax; two sons, Wayne Thrower and Jeff Thrower, both of South Boston; three sisters, Buline Clayton of Roxboro, Dora Lee King of Niceville, Fl., and Maxine Carey of Henderson, N.C.; five grandchildren; and one great grandchild, Ashely Watson of South Boston.
Mr. Thrower was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Weldon Thrower Jr.; a brother, William Thrower; and two grandsons, Kevin Thrower and Neal Thrower.
Funeral services for Weldon Harris Thrower will be held today, September 20, at 11 a.m. at Shady Grove United Methodist Church, with the Revs. Raymond McGarr and Don Davidson officiating.

James Hilton Wood
Mr. James Hilton Wood, 78, of Roxboro, N.C. died September 15, 2004 at Person Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Wood was born in Halifax County to the late Gertrude Nichols Eakes and Clarence Wood. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Henderson Wood.
Mr. Wood was a member of Olive Branch Baptist Church and a retired farmer.
Survivors include four children, Linda W. Spires and husband, Bill, of Columbia, S.C., Dale Wood and wife, Shirley, of Halifax, Barry Wood and wife, Kathy, of Durham, N.C., and Laura W. Wilson and husband, Noel, of Roxboro; four grandchildren, Jamie Spires, Thomas Spires, Amy Wood and Cassidy Wilson; one brother, Thomas ‘Pete’ Wood of Halifax; three sisters, Virginia Hite of Oxford, N.C., Peggy Anderson of Charlotte, N.C. and Eva Ellis of Hopewell.

Steven Douglas Kotter
Steven Douglas Kotter, 49, of 1099 Alphonse Dairy Road, South Boston died September 19, 2004 at Cluster Springs.
Mr. Kotter was born September 25, 1954, in Vincennes, Ind. He was the son of Larry Kotter and JoAnn Kotter, and was married to Mary Katherine Ward Kotter.
A Pharmacist with Eckerd Drug in Farmville, Mr. Kotter received his B.S. from N.C. State, Pharmacy degree from Ferris State College in Big Rapids, Mich. and his M.S. in Pharmacy from UNC. He was a member of Faith Community Church where he was an adult Sunday school teacher and elder.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Nathan James Kotter of South Boston, Daniel Jacob Kotter of Alameda, Calif., and Andrew Joseph Kotter of South Boston; his parents of Tere Haute, Ind.; one brother, Mike Kotter of Houston, Texas; and three sisters, Jean Bielby of Saganaw, Mich., Sharon Abdellah of Kalamozoo, Mich., and Cathy Kotter of Midland, Mich.
A memorial service for Mr. Kotter will be held tomorrow, September 23 at 2 p.m. at the Church of God of South Boston with the Rev. Dane Skelton officiating. Burial will be private.
