Berkley Grey Duffey
Berkley Grey Duffey, 86, of 9191 Scuffletown Road, Randolph died July 29, 2003 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mr. Duffey was born in Charlotte County on January 16, 1917, the son of Frederick Duffey and Susie Cassada Duffey and was married to Mary Wade Duffey. He was of the Christian faith.
Survivors include one daughter and one son-in-law, Brenda D. Davis and husband, Robert, of Scottsburg; three sisters, Nellie Martin of Randolph, Corrine Watts of Fincastle and Hilda Nothat of N.J.; one brother, John Duffey of N.J.; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, Bernard Grey Duffey and Carl Burton Duffey; two daughters, Jean D. Ingram and Sylvia D. East; and two grandsons, Edward Davis and Jimmy East Jr.
Funeral services for Mr. Duffey will be held today, August 1, 2003 at 11 a.m. at Woodlawn Mausoleum Chapel in Chase City with the Rev. Richard Saunders officiating. Burial will take place in Woodlawn Mausoleum.

Mary Cole 'Dal' Ford
Mary Cole 'Dal' Ford, 83, of 1048 Cluster Springs Road, South Boston died July 29, 2003 in The Woodview.
Mrs. Ford was born in Halifax County on June 5, 1920, the daughter of Charlie W. Cole and Nannie Lowery Cole and was married to Robert C. Ford Sr. She was a member of Black Walnut Baptist Church and was a retired cafeteria worker at Cluster Springs Elementary School.
Services for Mrs. Ford will be held today, August 1 at Black Walnut Baptist at 2 p.m. with the Rev. H.V. Conner officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Survivors include two sons, Robert C. 'Bob' Ford Jr. and wife, Brenda of South Boston and Jerry Ford and wife, Nancy, of Richmond; one daughter, Charlotte Younger and her husband, Randy of South Boston; two sisters, Frances Chaney of Halifax and Alice Flannigan of Virginia Beach; two brothers, Stover Cole of Halifax and Ralph Cole of South Boston; three grandsons, Franklin Younger of Halifax, Rob Ford of South Boston, and Troy Ford of Crewe; one granddaughter, Elizabeth Ford of Richmond; three great-grandsons, Andrew Younger of Halifax and Zak and Ben Ford, both of South Boston; and one great-granddaughter, Nina Ford of Crewe.

Elwood Louis Harris
Elwood Louis Harris, 76, of Timberlake, N.C. died July 29, 2003 at his home.
Born in Mecklenburg County, he was the son of Walter Louis and Irene Hall Harris and husband of the late Rosemary Powell Harris.
Mr. Harris retired from Crown Aluminum after 20 years of service. He was a WWII Army Veteran and served as Commander Treasurer and Adjutant of the Person County Chapter of Disabled American Veterans. Mr. Harris was a member of Montwood Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon.
Survivors include his second wife, Lois Loftis Martin Harris; one daughter, Sandra H. Hicks of Hurdle Mills, N.C.; one son, Louis Harris of Roxboro, N.C.; five stepsons, Henry Martin, Jerry Martin, Robert Martin, Ray Martin and Johnny Martin, all of Roxboro; three stepdaughters, Alma Clayton, Ann Solomon and Faye Sullivan, all of Roxboro; one brother, John A. Harris of Roxboro; three sisters, Marion H. Clayton and Agnes H. Dunkley, both of Roxboro, and Maxine H. Moore of Timberlake; one stepbrother, Richard Saunders; five grandchildren, Donna Hicks, Stephen Hicks, Dustin Shotwell, Samantha Shotwell, and Jonathan Shotwell; 21 step-grandchildren; and 21 step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for Mr. Harris will be held today, August 1, at 2 p.m. at Brooks & White Funeral Home Chapel in Roxboro, with the Rev. Ross Thompson officiating. Burial will follow in Asbury United Methodist Church Cemetery in Halifax.

Eva Chandler Medlock
Eva Chandler Medlock, 58, of 1202 McPhail Drive, South Boston died July 31, 2003 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
She was born in Halifax County on October 18, 1944, the daughter of Roy Chandler and Marie Lester Chandler and was a member of White Oak Fork Baptist Church.
Survivors of Ms. Medlock include two daughters, Tanya Medlock of South Boston and Nicole Battle of Houston, Texas; one son, Todd Medlock of Houston; five grandchildren; her parents of Omega; one sister, Elaine Edmonds of Pomona, N.Y.; two brothers, Leroy Chandler of Halifax and Charlie Chandler of Virgilina. She was preceded in death by one sister, Beatrice Chandler.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow, August 2 at 2 p.m. at White Oak Fork Baptist Church with the Rev. Glenn Faulkner officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Wilford Wright Whitlow
Wilford Wright Whitlow, 60, of 218 Easley Street, South Boston died July 30, 2003 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mr. Whitlow was born in Person County, N.C. the son of Amos Thomas Whitlow and Lucie W. Gravitt and was married to Althea Adams Whitlow. He was a member of Second Baptist Church, and was a self-employed dry wall contractor.
Survivors include his wife; his mother; one son, Wilford A. 'Tony' Whitlow and his wife, Shelia, of Virgilina; one daughter, Tamra W. Whitt and her husband, Kevin, of Virgilina; three grandsons, William 'Will' Whitlow, Andrew Whitlow and Daniel Whitt; two granddaughters, Sara Whitt and Grace Whitt; and a special niece, Donna W. Francis and family of South Boston. Mr. Whitlow was preceded in death by his father; two brothers, Charles Whitlow and Kenneth Gravitt; and one sister, Judy Newcomb.
Funeral services for Mr. Whitlow will be held tomorrow, August 2 at 2 p.m. at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel.

Edith Loftis Satterfield
Edith Loftis Satterfield, 84, of 200 Monroe Street, South Boston died July 31, 2003 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mrs. Satterfield was born in Halifax County on May 7, 1919, the daughter of William Andrew Loftis and Sara Ollie Loftis and was married to Osborne Robert Satterfield. She was a founding member and Sunday school teacher of Ash Avenue Baptist Church. She was also a member of the Tuesday Woman’s Club.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Sue Satterfield of Afton; two sisters, Bertha Gravitt and Dorothy Brown, both of South Boston; two granddaughters, Shannon Kanner of Dahlonega, Ga. and Laine Satterfield Boise of Idaho; one grandson, Tuck Satterfield of Durham, N.C.; and one great-granddaughter, Elyse Kanner of Dahlonega. Mrs. Satterfield was preceded in death by four brothers, Andrew, Jack, Dan and Roy Loftis.
Funeral services were held August 3 at 3 p.m. at Ash Avenue Baptist Church with the Rev. John Eure officiating. Burial followed in Oak Ridge Cemetery.

William Edward ‘John’ Stevens
William Edward ‘John’ Stevens, 76, of Danville died August 1, 2003 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Stevens was born May 25, 1927, in Halifax County the son of Claude Stevens and Nadie Huffman Stevens.
He was employed with Dan River Mills for 25 years and was a member of Arbor Baptist Church. Mr. Stevens was a Veteran of the US Army during WWII serving with the Military Police in Germany.
Survivors include three daughters, Martha Payne and her husband, William of Richmond, Carolyn Jane Stevens of Lawrenceville and Donna Ruth Stevens of Ringgold; two sons, Danny Edward Stevens and his wife, Mary, of Danville, and Matthew Sterling Stevens and wife, Cathy, of Alton; one sister, Mabel Bowen of Virgilina; grandchildren, Ann Stevens Adams, Amanda Stevens, Alyesa Stevens, William Payne IV, Stephanie Payne McGriffin, Clarence Thompson and Rebecca Stevens; and his great-grandchildren, Morgan Thompson, Madison Payne, Caleb Adams, Jody Adams and William Adams. Mr. Stevens was preceded in death by one son, William Edward Stevens Jr.
Services were held August 3 at 4 p.m. at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel in Danville with the Rev. Averette Witcher officiating. Burial with military rites followed in Arbor Baptist Church Cemetery in Halifax County.
Ollie S. Taylor
A funeral service will be held for Ollie S. Taylor of Mechanicsville at 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 5, 2003, at Nelsen Funeral Home.
Interment will be at Washington Memorial Park.
Mrs. Taylor, 84, died Saturday, August 2, 2003.
She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Howard J. Taylor Sr., a son Howard J. Taylor Jr. and his wife, Brenda, two grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren, as well as a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Mrs. Taylor was retired from the American Tobacco Company, and was a member of Antioch Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends on Monday from 2-4 p.m. as well as from 6-8 p.m. at the Nelsen Funeral Home.
Wilford Wright Whitlow

Joseph Daniel Alderson
Joseph Daniel Alderson, 82, of 1680 Carrington Road, Red Oak died August 3, 2003 at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Mr. Alderson was born in Halifax County on July 17, 1921, the son of Samuel Alderson and Lottie Mae Jennings Alderson and was married to Ruby Haskins Alderson. He was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Nannie A. Jackson and Patsy A. Lennon, both of South Boston; three sons, Augusta Combs and Samuel Alderson, both of Bridgeport, Conn. and Joseph Alderson Jr. of Petersburg; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two stepdaughters, Julie Anderson of Trenton, N.J. and Elaine Brown of Schenectady, N.Y.; and one stepson, Monte Joshua of Red Oak.
Funeral services for Mr. Alderson will be held August 8 at 11 a .m. at Mt. Olive Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. James Crowder officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Garden cemetery.

Jeanette Denise Edmunds
Jeanette Denise Edmunds, 47, of 1058 Back Street, Halifax died August 3, 2003 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Miss Edmunds was born in Halifax County on April 10, 1956, the daughter of William Carrington Edmunds and Thelma Sadler Edmunds. She was a member of Banister Hill Baptist Church and was employed by Wal-Mart and the Halifax County Public School System.
Survivors include her parents of Halifax; one sister, Laura Paige of Halifax; four brothers, Nathaniel Edmunds of Hawaii, Israel Edmunds of Newark, N.J., Michael Edmunds of Richmond and Keith Edmunds of Atlanta, Ga.
Funeral services for Miss Edmunds will be held tomorrow, August 7 at 2 p.m. at Banister Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. William Carr officiating. Burial will follow in Piney Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

Sanford Lee Faulkner
Sanford Lee Faulkner, 74, of 2024 Virgie Cole Road, South Boston died August 4, 2003 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mr. Faulkner was born in Halifax County on March 2, 1929, the son of the late John Edward Faulkner and Mary Gertrude Gerst Faulkner. He was married to Mary Logan Faulkner, and was a member of Jeters Chapel Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Carmetta Waller of Clarksville; one grandson, Antawn Faulkner of South Boston; one sister, Clara E. Darden of Buffalo Junction; two sisters-in-law, Mae Fannie Faulkner and Nannie Lovelace, both of South Boston.
Funeral services for Mr. Faulkner will be held August 9 at 11 a.m. at Jeters Chapel Baptist with the Rev. Samuel Mitchell officiating. Burial will follow in the Faulkner Family Cemetery.

Lennis Edward Lacks
Lennis Edward Lacks, 73, of 5097 Black Walnut Road, Randolph died August 6, 2003 at his home.
He was born in Halifax County on January 9, 1930, the son of Arthur Jackson Lacks and Ida Williams Lacks and was married to Margaret Duffey Lacks. Mr. Lacks was a member of Mt. Laurel United Methodist Church.
His survivors include his wife; two sons, Keith Edward Lacks and Jeffrey Miles Lacks, both of Randolph; two sisters, Blanche Duffer of Burlington, N.C. and Mary Brinn of Randolph; and two grandchildren, Dana and J.J. Lacks, both of Randolph.
Graveside services for Mr. Lacks will be held today, August 8 at Mount Laurel United Methodist Church Cemetery at 2 p.m. The Rev. Don Pizzeck will officiate.

June Redford Palmer, 62, of 1210 N. Nichols Ferry Road, South Boston died August 6, 2003 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mrs. Palmer was born in Richmond on March 29, 1941, the daughter of Raymond Earl Redford and Mary Wright Redford and was married to John Palmer. She attended Bethel Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband; one son, John R. Palmer of South Boston; one daughter, Janet P. Kirkland of Hendersonville, N.C.; two brothers, Calvin and Lloyd Redford, both of Richmond; and one granddaughter, Anna Kirkland of Hendersonville.
Funeral services for Mrs. Palmer will be held today, August 8 at 11 a.m. at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Tony Brooks conducting the service. Burial will take place in Oak Ridge Cemetery.
Louise Lloyd Covington
Graveside services for Mrs. Louise Lloyd Covington will be held today at 2 p.m. at the Crystal Hill Southern Baptist Church cemetery.
The Rev. Ed Griffin will officiate.
Mrs. Covington died Saturday, August 9, 2003, at the Twin Oaks Nursing Home.
She was 93.
Mrs. Covington was born in Halifax County on January 16, 1910 to the late Charlie Lloyd and the late Mattie Moore Lloyd.
She was married to Willie Lewis Covington and was a member of the Winns Creek Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Elsie C. Hoy of Richmond, one son, Willie Thomas Covington of Danville, one sister, Thelma Martin of Randolph, one brother, Jessie Lloyd, three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
