Dewey Wilson Anderson, 86, of 2255 Dr. Merritt Road, Nathalie, died August 19, 2003 at the Woodview.
Mr. Anderson was born in Halifax County on October 17, 1916, the son of Richard Tom Anderson and Annie Guthrie Anderson. He was married to Margaret Moore Anderson and was a member of the Catawba Baptist Church, Liberty Masonic Lodge, Woodmen of the World and Willis Hunting Lodge.
His survivors include a son: Kenneth D. and Patricia Anderson of Lake City, S.C.; grandson: Kenneth and Paula Anderson Jr. of Florence, S.C.; great-grandson: Dustin Anderson and sister: Frances and John Smith of Amelia Court House.
A graveside service was held August 21 at Catawba Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. David Dickerson officiating.
Frankie Dale Clay
Mr. Frankie Dale Clay, of Banister Road, Halifax, died August 22, 2003 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
He was 53-years-old at the time of his death.
Frankie Dale Clay was born in Oxford, N.C., on March 23, 1950, the son of Frank G. Clay and Estelle Clay Whitlow, and was married to Jeanette Ford Clay.
Frankie Dale Clay is survived by his wife, Jeanette Ford Clay of Halifax; one daughter, Sherry Clay of South Boston; four half-brothers, Wayne Conner of Halifax, Warren Conner of Halifax, Ricky Conner of Ringgold and Mickey
Conner of Ringgold; and one aunt, Barbara Ann Whitt of Roxboro, N.C.
A graveside service for Frankie Dale Clay were held yesterday at Vernon Hill Baptist Church, with Don P. Bagwell conducting the service.

Bernard Jackson Douglas
Bernard Jackson Douglas of Saxe, 82, died August 19, 2003.
His survivors include his wife: Lucille Watts Douglas; a daughter: Faye and Warren Rutledge of Red Oak; a son: Michael D. Douglas Sr. of Saxe; two grandchildren: Michael “Mickey” Douglas Jr. of Charlotte Court House and Angela “Bunn” Stimpson of Appomattox; a great-grandchild: Justin Edward Stimpson of Appomattox; a sister” Margaret D. Satterfield of Nathalie. He was preceded in death by his parents: Stonewall Jackson and Pearl Jones Douglas and three brothers: Roy, James and Hubert Douglas.
A funeral service was held August 22 at the Providence Presbyterian Church with interment in the church cemetery.
Alice Abbott Hedrick Stevens
Funeral services for Mrs. Alice Abbott Hedrick Stevens will be held Tuesday, August 26, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Townes Memorial Chapel.
The Rev. Thomas Shepherd will officiate.
Burial will follow in the Highland Burial Park.
Mrs. Stevens died Friday, August 22, 2003 at the Roman Eagle Nursing Home in Danville.
She was born on June 7, 1906 in Chatham to the late Thomas Stephen Abbott and the late Alice Taylor Abbott.
Mrs. Stevens was married to the late Charles W. Stevens.
She was previously married to the late Jessie Lee Hedricks.
Mrs. Stevens was a homemaker and attended Grace Design United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Dorothy Hedrick Sowers, five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Stevens was preceded in death by one daughter, Edna Hedrick Gauldin, one son, Bernard L. Hedrick and two grandchildren.
Naomi Jean Waller
Naomi Jean Waller, 44, of Swinging Bridge Road, Brookneal, died Friday, August 22, 2003, at her home.
Ms. Waller was born in South Boston on January 6, 1959, the daughter of Nancy Waller Kress of Brookneal.
She was of the Baptist faith and a former employee of the Goodwill Store in Altavista.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by one son, Christian Lee Waller of Rustburg; one daughter, Nancy Catherine Waller of Naruna; one brother, Sidney Earl Waller of Appomattox; five sisters, Debra Brizendine of Halifax, Martha Harrison of Lynchburg, Rayleen Harris of Brookneal, Penny Hammock of Brookneal and LaVerne King of South Boston; and two grandchildren.
A funeral service will for Naomi Jean Waller will be held today at 2 p.m., at Henderson Funeral Home Chapel, Brookneal, with the Rev. Larry Martin conducting the service.
Interment will be in the Wickliffe Cemetery.
Meredith Duncan
Meredith Duncan, 89, of 1160 Greens Folly Road, South Boston, died August 24, 2003 at Berry Hill Nursing Home.
Ms. Duncan was born in Halifax County on April 22, 1914, the daughter of the late John Duncan and Callie Tucker Duncan. She was a member of Berry Hill Baptist Church.
Survivors include one brother, Edgar Duncan of Richmond; and a devoted niece, Leatrice Hunt of Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
Funeral services for Ms. Duncan will be held today, August 27 at 1 p.m. at Berry Hill Baptist with Bishop Donald Rudolph officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the church from noon until 1 p.m. on Wednesday.
Jackie Owen Miles
Jackie Owen Miles, 64, of 2108 College Street, South Boston, died August 24, 2003 at Duke University Medical Center.
Mr. Miles was born in Halifax County on December 18, 1938, the son of Culetheius Miles and Frances Oliver Milles and was married to Serita Beard Miles. He was a member of Dan River Bethel Baptist Church and was a former employee of Burlington Industries, Inc.
Funeral services for Mr. Miles will be held August 29 at 1 p.m. at Dan River Bethel Baptist Church with the Rev. James L. Thomas officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Angela Brown of Baltimore, Md.; one son, Roger Miles of Ft. Lewis, Wash.; seven grandchildren; three sisters, Denise Parker of Ga., Lynette James of Fla. and Wanda Claiborne of Roxboro, N.C.; five brothers, Bobbie Nelson Miles of Cocoa, Fla., William C. Miles of Queens, N.Y., Terry Humphrey and Tracey Humphrey, both of Roxboro, and Lynn Humphrey of South Boston; one son-in-law, Edward Brown; one daughter-in-law, Nikita Miles; and his mother-in-law, Lucy Beard of South Boston.
Mr. Miles was preceded in death by one son, Timothy 'Timmy' Miles.
The family will receive friends at the Chapel of Jeffress Funeral Home tomorrow evening, from 7:00 until 8:00, and other times at the home.
Rev. Samuel Lloyd Stephens
Rev. Samuel Lloyd Stephens, 84, of 1611 Elliott Avenue, South Boston, died August 25, 2003 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Rev. Stephens was born in Gaffney, S.C. September 22, 1918, the son of the late Samuel Stephens and Jeanette Morehead Stephens and was married to Ethel Perkins Stephens. He pastored Mizpah Presbyterian Church of South Boston, Gethsemane Presbyterian Church of Drakes Branch, and also churches in Amelia and Lawrenceville. Rev. Stephens was a former member of the Business and Professional Men's Club.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Lynnda S. Oliver of South Boston and Jacqueline Stephens of Brooklyn, N.Y.; four sons, Rev. Albert Robinson Jr. of Elizabeth City, N.C., Samuel Stephens Jr. of Virginia Beach, Kenneth Stephens of Napersville, Ill., and Derek Stephens of Chesapeake; 10 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; two sisters, Irene S. Hunt of Charlotte, N.C. and Sula S. Richardson of Indianapolis, Ind.; and one brother, Dr. Clarence F. Stephens of Conesus, N.Y.
Funeral services for Rev. Stephens will be held tomorrow, August 28 at 2 p.m. at Dan River Bethel Baptist Church with the Revs. A.C. Robinson Jr. and James L. Thomas officiating. Burial will follow in Halifax Memorial Gardens.

Ruth Roach Weatherford
Ruth Roach Weatherford, 88, of 2630 L.P. Bailey Memorial Highway, Halifax, died August 26, 2003 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mrs. Weatherford was born in Pittsylvania County on October 23, 1914, the daughter of Norman Lee Roach and Ellie Edwards Roach and was married to Archie Smith Weatherford. She was a member of First Baptist Church Republican Grove.
Survivors include six daughters and sons-in-law, Shelby W. Hardy and husband, Alex, of Danville, Charline W. Bennett and husband, Jimmy, Verona W. Allen and husband, Dennis, all of Halifax, Delma W. Redd and husband, Dean, of Java, Kay W. Burton and husband, John, of South Boston, and Carolyn W. Doss and husband, Lynnie, of Evington; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Franklin L. Weatherford and wife, Linda, Langston Weatherford, Tony Weatherford and wife, Kathy, Larry Weatherford and wife, Jeanine, all of Danville; four sisters, Velma McGregor and Sue Hankins, both of Gretna, Lizzie Dalton of Newport News, and Mary Barbour of Martinsville; 21 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; another son-in-law, Ronald Gammon, widow of Ellie W. Gammon.
Mrs. Weatherford was preceded in death by one daughter, Ellie W. Gammon; two sons, Kenneth Ray Weatherford and Roy Allen Weatherford, and one grandchild, Roy Wayne Weatherford.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow, August 28 at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church Republican Grove with the Rev. Shelton Miles III officiating. Burial will take place in Asbury United Methodist Church Cemetery.

James Henry Buster
James Henry Buster, age 100, of Clarkton Road, Nathalie, died August 25, 2003 in Lynchburg.
Mr. Buster was the son of the late Rev. Thomas B. Buster and the late Mary Ann Clark Buster and was married to the late Ruth Buster.
Survivors include one sister, Mary E. Buster, of the home; and one sister-in-law, Mary Emma Buster of Nathalie.
Funeral services for Mr. Buster will be held tomorrow, August 30 at 1 p.m. at New Shiloh Baptist Church in Nathalie with the Rev. Sylvester Crawley officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Douglas W. Conner
Douglas W. Conner, a Richmond attorney and the longtime president of the Historic Monument Avenue and Fan District Foundation, died Wednesday, August 27, 2003, after suffering a stroke. He was 67.
Mr. Conner helped establish the foundation, which raises money to buy and renovate Fan District properties. He was the foundation’s president from its beginnings in 1976 until about 1990. He was a former member of the city’s Monument Avenue Commission.
Admitted to the Virginia State Bar in 1961, Mr. Conner was an estate planner who practiced in an office in his stately Georgian Revival home overlooking the Robert E. Lee statue on Monument Avenue.
Colleagues remember Mr. Conner for his efforts in founding the Advanced Estate Planning and Administration Seminar and for convincing fellow attorneys that the program could be successful.
He was chairman of the seminar, held annually at the Tides Inn in Irvington, until his death.
“He was the father and the guiding light of the program,” said Frank A. Thomas III, president of the Virginia Bar Association. "He took pride in making it work every year. The seminar has grown from a local program to a nationally recognized seminar in the field.”
Harry J. Warthen III, a partner in the firm of Hunton & Williams, added that the seminar “was Doug’s great contribution to the bar and to the citizens of the state.
“It was his idea ... his creature, and he ran it for 24 years. The last conversation I had with him was how to celebrate the 25th anniversary next year. I don’t know of any other single man effort like that in law in Virginia."
Mr. Conner was a former president of the Estate Planning Council of Richmond. He also served on the estate-planning councils at the College of William and Mary and the University of Richmond. He earned degrees from both institutions.
Survivors include his wife, Carole Coleman Conner; three daughters, Paige Conner Totaro of Alexandria, Shannon Coleman Conner and Douglas Conner Edwards, both of Richmond; a son, Patrick Duncan Conner of Richmond; a brother, Henry A. Conner Jr. of Richmond; two sisters, Kathryn Conner Ingram of Richmond and Reba Conner Lacks of Marietta, Ga.; and three granddaughters.
A memorial service will be held today, August 29, at 11 a.m. at St. James's Episcopal Church.
Hassie Singleton Fitzgerald
Hassie Singleton Fitzgerald of Omega died August 23, 2003 at Memorial Hospital in Chattanooga, Tenn. at the age of 78.
She was born in Halifax County on February 6, 1925, the daughter of the late Jessie Walker Singleton and Martha Puryear Singleton, and was married to the late Robert James Fitzgerald. She was a member of Jeters Chapel Baptist Church.
Survivors of Mrs. Fitzgerald will be held tomorrow, August 30, at 10 a.m. at Jeters Chapel Baptist with the Rev. Roderick Fitz officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends this evening from 7:00 until 8:00 at the Jeffress Funeral Home Chapel.
Gloria Hope Palmer
Gloria Hope Palmer of Crystal Hill died August 28, 2003 at The Woodview. She was born in Halifax County on April 12, 1927, and was 76 years old.
Ms. Palmer was the daughter of Robert Daniel Palmer and Sue Hunt Palmer and was a member of Crystal Hill Southern Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sisters, Katherine Bell of Danville and Edith Ray Leach of Atlanta, Ga.; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Graveside services for Ms. Palmer will be held Monday, September 1, 2003 at Crystal Hill Southern Baptist Church Cemetery at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Ed Griffin officiating.
Myra Averett Anderson
Myra Averett Anderson, 79, of Bellevue Road, Halifax died May 28, 2004 at The Medical Center in Plano, Texas.
She was the daughter of the late William James Averett and Greta Clark Averett and was married to the late Henry Belt Anderson.
Mrs. Anderson was a member of First Baptist Church and was a retired cafeteria manager within the Halifax County School System.
Survivors include four sons, David Barry Anderson and wife, Bobbi, of South Boston, William Lewis 'Chip' Anderson and wife, Theo, of North Logan, Utah, Albert Jackson Anderson and wife, Cheryl, of Richardson, Texas, and Craig Mason Anderson and wife, Janet, of Midlothian; one sister, Kathlyne A. Russell of Scottsburg; six grandchildren, Stephen Anderson of Richmond, Stephanie Beth Anderson of South Boston, Molly and Katy Anderson, both of N. Logan, Utah, Joshua and Lauran Anderson, both of Midlothian. Mrs. Anderson was also preceded in death by one sister, Lonie Averett, and one brother, Jack Averett.
Graveside services will be held June 5 at 11 a.m. at Dan River Baptist Church Cemetery with the Revs. H.V. Conner and Jack Stewart officiating.
