Tommy Ray Clay
Tommy Ray Clay, 56, of Boydton died at his home. He was the son of the late Elmer Jasper Clay and Irene Tuck Clay.
Mr. Clay was a retired truck driver and was of the Baptist Faith.
Survivors include his mother of South Boston; one daughter, Ginger Clay of Raleigh, N.C.; one son, Tommy Ray Clay Jr. of Raleigh; two brothers, Robert Shawn Clay of South Boston and Walter Danny Clay and wife, Colleen B. Clay, of Winterville, N.C.
A graveside service for Mr. Clay was held May 31, 2004 at Halifax Memorial gardens with the Rev. Dr. John Eure officiating.
Ellis Martin Hazelwood
Ellis Martin Hazelwood, 84, of 1140 Mt. Laurel Road, Clover died June 1, 2004 at the home of her daughter.
Mrs. Hazelwood was born in Halifax County on July 4, 1919, the daughter of the late George Oliver Martin and Kate Whittimore Martin and was married to the late William T. Hazelwood. She was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy.
Survivors include four sons, Sam Hazelwood of South Boston, and James, Ronald and Roger Hazelwood, all of Clover; three daughters, Margaret Seamster of Skipwith, Carrie Wilmouth of Nathalie and Mary Newcomb of Clover; one brother, Archer Martin of Halifax; two sisters, Louise Martin of Scottsburg and Rosa Kincaid of Clover; 18 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Hazelwood was also preceded in death by two brothers, John and Ed Martin.
Funeral services will be held at Church of God of Prophecy on June 5 at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Courtney W. Coffer officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Brooks Funeral Home Friday night from 7 until 9, and other times at the home of Mary Newcomb, 2144 Mill Road, Clover.
Selma Owen Murphy
Selma Owen Murphy, 98, died June 1, 2004. Born July 15, 1905, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of James Thomas Owen and Georgianna Crane Owen. Mrs. Murphy was a lifetime member of Oakland United Methodist Church.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Elbert Murphy; two sons, Herbert O. Murphy and Roland B. Murphy; three sisters, Ola O. Shelton, Ruby O. Oakes and Minnie O. Murphy; four brothers, John, Elgin, Eddie and Spurgeon Owen; and a son-in-law, Malcolm Francis.
Mrs. Murphy is survived by three daughters, Mary M. Harris and husband, William J., of Chatham, Lois M. Clark and husband, Ryland, of Nathalie, and Faye Francis Tucker and husband, Fletcher, of Evington; two daughters-in-law, Patsy Murphy of Appomattox and Audrey Murphy of Chatham; three sisters, Janie O. Shields, Anna O. Hayden, and Irene O. Yeatts, and one brother, Richard Owen, all of Danville; 16 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.
A graveside funeral will be held at Oakland United Methodist Church June 3 at 11 a.m. with the Revs. Travis E. Witt and David Dickerson officiating.
The family will be at the residence of William H . Harris, 801 Tightsqueeze Road in Chatham.

Meredith Holderby Harrell
Meredith Holderby Harrell, 84, of South Boston died June 3, 2004 at her home.
Mrs. Harrell was the daughter of the late Andrew Roberdeau Holderby III and Clotilde Woods Holderby and was the wife of the late Richard O. Harrell Jr. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of South Boston.
Survivors include two daughters, Meredith 'Bobbie' Harrell Tayler of Rougemont, N.C. and Caroline Wingfield Harrell and husband, Edwin T. Cramer, of Marshall; one son, Richard O. Harrell III and wife, Frances, of South Boston; seven grandchildren, Meredith Davenport of New York, N.Y., Molly Davenport of Lafayette, La., Marcus Taylor of Roxboro, N.C., Richard O. Harrell IV, Winston Harrell, David Harrell and Parker Harrell, all of South Boston.
Funeral services for Mrs. Harrell will be held tomorrow, June 5, at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Russell Lee conducting the service. Burial will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the home this evening, from 3 until 5, and from 7 until 9.

Margaret Rebecca Solomon Loyd
Margaret Rebecca Solomon Loyd, 59, of 1018 Dan River Church Road, South Boston, died June 3, 2004 at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Mrs. Loyd was born in Halifax County on December 1, 1944, the daughter of Wallace Jordan Solomon and Margaret Frances Chaney Solomon and was married to Bobby Lee Loyd. She was a member of Center United Church of Christ.
Survivors include her husband; her parents of Halifax; one son, Wallace Spencer Loyd of South Boston; one daughter, Margaret LeAnn Loyd of South Boston; one grandson, Zachary Tyler Loyd of South Boston; and one daughter-in-law, Michelle Henderson Loyd of South Boston.
Funeral services for Mrs. Loyd will be held tomorrow, June 5 at 2 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. John Wilder officiating. Burial will follow in Union United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Fred L. Sydnor
Fred L. Sydnor, 70, of 1132 Lower Liberty Road, Nathalie died June 1, 2004 at his home.
Mr. Sydnor was born in Halifax County on September 20, 1933, the son of the late Ed Lee Sydnor and Katie Mosley Sydnor and was married to Nettie Johnson Sydnor. He was a deacon at Ellis Creek Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife of the home; six Godchildren, Gloria Lee Powell of Roxboro, N.C., Barry Mabins, Wayne Mabins, Darlene Mabins, Kim Stone and Gregory Mabins, all of Nathalie; one brother, Joe Sydnor of Nathalie; two sisters, Katie Coleman of Clover and Sally Bett Coleman of Nathalie; one God sister, Christine Mabins of Nathalie; two devoted friends, Waverly Jennings and Sandra Smith, both of Nathalie; two sisters-in-law, Olivia Sydnor and Mary Liza Johnson, both of Nathalie; three brothers-in-law, Charles Coleman of Clover, Charlie Jennings and Jimmy Coleman, both of Nathalie.
Funeral services for Mr. Sydnor will be held June 6 at 2 p.m. at Ellis Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Rodney Forest officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Virginia Guill Throckmorton
Virginia Guill Throckmorton, 89, of Scottsburg died June 1, 2004 at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Bud Countrymen in Rockbridge County.
Mrs. Throckmorton was born in Halifax County on September 1, 1914, to the late Ethan Allen and Florida Virginia Guill, and was married to the late Alton Hagood Throckmorton. She was a member of South Boston Seventh Day Adventist Church.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and Bud Countrymen of Rockbridge County and Doris and James Carter of Virgilina; two granddaughters and husbands, Tammy and Tommy Pool and Deborah and Brock Thomas; one grandson and his wife, Lloyd and Sheila Smith; a grandson, Jamie Carter and his fiance', April Compton; four great-grandsons, Will and Gabe Pool, Alex Carter and Landon Thomas; and one sister, Anne B. Beckedorff of Greensboro, N.C.
Funeral services for Mrs. Throckmorton will be held today, June 4 at 2 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with Pastors Garland Day and Jeff Taylor officiating. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery at Scottsburg.
Benjamin Morton Clark
Benjamin Morton Clark, 83, of 2191 Bill Tuck Hwy., South Boston, died August 16, 2004 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mr. Clark was born in Halifax County on July 29, 1921, to the late William M. and Carrie Gravitt Clark. He was a member of Seven Oaks Baptist Church and the American Legion Post 8.
His survivors include his wife: Elizabeth M. Clark; son: Charlie and Linda Clark of South Boston; two daughters: Lorene Clark of South Boston and Shirley and Alan Taylor of Brookneal; three sisters: Mary Sybl Morris, Inez Womack of Halifax and Mildred Womack of Alton; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son: Lee Clark; sister: Arline Lowery; and four brothers: Ronald, Morrell, Robert and William Clark.
A funeral service was held August 18 at Brooks Funeral Home with the Rev. Walter Yancey and Rev. Rudolph Jacobs officiating. Burial was held at Halifax Memorial Gardens.

Kelly Madison
Kelly Madison, 68, died August 13, 2004 in Miami, Fla.
His survivors include two sisters: Essie Richardson and Conyers Weston of South Boston.
A funeral service will be held Sat., August 21, at 2 p.m., at McWhite Funeral Home in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.
William Robinson Tuggle
William Robinson Tuggle, 51, formerly of South Boston, died August 18, 2004.
Mr. Tuggle was the son of Margaret Chatham Tuggle and the late Aubrey Gray Tuggle.
His survivors include his mother; sister: Margaret Miller; and two brothers: Cass C. Tuggle and Aubrey G. Tuggle.
A private service will be held in Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond.
James William ‘Jim’ Cavanaugh
Funeral services for Mr. James William Cavanaugh will be held today at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Tim Cannon officiating.
Burial will follow at Halifax Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Cavanaugh of Nottingham Drive, South Boston, died Friday at Halifax Regional Hospital.
He was 89.
Mr. James William Cavanaugh was born April 15, 1915 in Netcong, N.J. He was the son of the late Thomas Cavanaugh and Dorretta Mooney Cavanaugh and was married to Gladys Norman Cavanaugh.
He was a retired insurance agent with State Farm Insurance.
Mr. Cavanaugh was a member of the First Baptist Church, a member and former president of the Lacy Bible class, a former Sunday school teacher, former Sunday school superintendent and former Deacon.
He was also a charter and lifetime member of the Halifax County Rescue Squad, a founding member of the local Alzheimers Support Group and a member of Faulkner Memorial Masonic Lodge #98.
He is survived by: his wife, Gladys Norman Cavanaugh of South Boston; a daughter, Brenda C. Siffert of South Boston; a son, James W. Cavanaugh Jr. and wife, Susan, of Walterboro, S.C.; a sister, Frances C. Sumski of Stanhope, N.J.; four grandchildren, Jeff Siffert and wife, Pam, of Chesterfield, Donna C. Craven and husband, Johnny, of Walterboro, S.C., Bill Cavanaugh and Jason Cavanaugh, both of Walterboro, S.C.; six great-children, Ariel N. Siffert of South Boston, Shelby R. Craven, Sarah L. Craven and Miles Cavanaugh, all of Walterboro, S.C. and Courtney E. Siffert and Tiffany L. Siffert of Chesterfield.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Peg Cavanaugh and a grandson, Joe Siffert.

Francis Robertson Shearin
Funeral services for Mrs. Francis Robertson Shearin, of Poplar Creek Street in South Boston, will be held today at 2 p.m. in the Brooks Funeral Home Chapel.
The Rev. Jack Stewart will officiate.
Burial will follow in the Oak Ridge Cemetery.
Mrs. Shearin died at Halifax Regional Hospital on Saturday, August 21, 2004.
She was 70.
Mrs. Shearin was born in Halifax County on July 7, 1934, the daughter of the late Pete Colombus Robertson and Gaynell Phillips Robertson. She was married to the late Ernest F. Shearin and was a homemaker.
Survivors include two daughters, Kathy S. Madera and husband Antonio of South Boston and Gaye S. Clay and husband Mickey of Greensboro, N.C.; one step-daughter, Linda Anderson and husband Tom of Nathalie; one step-son, Charlie Shearin and wife Virginia of Brookneal; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Gail Diana Coles Mitchell
Funeral services for Mrs. Gail Diana Coles Mitchell of Nathalie will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Bethlehem Baptist Church.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Mitchell died Thursday, Aug. 19, 2004 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
She was 44.
Mrs. Mitchell was born in Halifax County on June 28, 1960.
She was the daughter of the late Riley Evans Coles Sr. and Martha C. Coles. She was married to Joseph Davis Mitchell Sr.
Mrs. Mitchell was a member of the Bethlehem Baptist Church and was employed by Berry Hill Nursing Home.
She is survived by: her husband, Joseph Mitchell Sr.; a daughter, La'Tonya Miller of Nathalie; two sons, Lawrence Miller Jr. of South Boston and LeAnthony Miller of Nathalie; three stepchildren, Sandra Mitchell and Katina Powell, both of Scottsburg and Joseph Mitchell Jr. of Keysville; six sisters, Mary L. Dabbs of Peekskill, N.Y., Cheryl Darden, Gloria M. Coles, Clara A. Coles, Lou A. Coles, all of Scottsburg; Julia L. Coles of Clover; three brothers, Earl E. Coles of Danville, Riley E. Coles Jr. of Clover, James C. Coles of Peekskill, N.Y.; four grandchildren, two aunts, one great-aunt, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Alice Coleman Mynor
Alice Coleman Mynor, 81, of 2206 Logan Rd., Java, died August 19, 2004 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mrs. Mynor was born on April 16, 1923 in Halifax County, the daughter of the late Charlie Henry and Betty Alice Logan Coleman. She was a member of the Elkhorn Baptist Church were she served as a member of the Trustee Ministry, Trustee Aid Ministry, Missionary Ministry, Usher’s Ministry, Deaconess Ministry and Chairwoman of the Library and Prison Ministry.
Her survivors include a sister: Leona Coleman (Elijah) of Philadelphia, Pa.; and two sisters-in-law: Deanna and Pearl Coleman of Java. She was preceded in death by her husband: Arthur J. Mynor; three sisters: Rosa and Thelma Coleman and Mable Smith; and four brothers: John, Jim, Vattell and Clarence Coleman.
A service will be held today, August 23, at 11 a.m., at the Elkhorn Baptist Church with the Dr. C. Lewis Motley officiating. Interment will follow in the Logan-Coleman family Cemetery, Java. The family will receive friends at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of the service.
Deloris Hill Prunty
Deloris Hill Prunty, 72, of Washington, D.C., died August 12, 2004.
Mrs. Prunty was born on February 28, 1932 in Halifax County to the late George and Effie Hill. She was a graduate of Virginia State College in Petersburg and was a Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) retiree. She was a member of St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church, Washington, D.C.
Her survivors include her daughter: Darnese Hill of Eatontown, N.J.; two brothers: George Hill of Victoria and Owen Hill (Dorothy) of Philadelphia, Pa.; three sisters: Elsie Watson of New York City, N.Y., Verna Phifer (Walter) of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Joyce Hill of Hyattsville, Md.; and sister-in-law: Pearl Hill.
She was preceded in death by three brothers: Cedric, Howard and Leon Hill; and three sisters: Pearl Fletcher, Theresa Harrison and Aileen Hill.
A service was held August 18 at St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church with Father Mark Hughes officiating.
