William Ray Saunders
Funeral services for William Ray Saunders will be held today at 10 a.m. at Finch and Finch Chapel with the Rev. Brady Willis officiating.
Interment will follow at Ellis Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mr. William Ray Saunders of East Hurt Road, Hurt, died Friday, Aug. 20, 2004 at Gretna Health Care Center.
He was 66.
He was born in Halifax County on May 23, 1938. He was the son of Raymond Melvin Saunders and the late Thelma Fallen Saunders, and was married to Lanie Pido Saunders.
Mr. William Ray Saunders was a member of New Prospect Baptist Church and Campbell Lodge #316 AF and AM. He was also a U.S. Army veteran and a retired employee of Babcock and Wilcox.
He is survived by: his wife, Lanie Pido Saunders; his father, Raymond Melvin Saunders; three sons, Donald Saunders, William Saunders and Jeffrey Saunders; two daughters, Teresa Saunders and Jerry Irby; and grandchildren.
Rena Lacks Williams Conner
A funeral service for Mrs. Rena Lacks Williams Conner of Scottsburg will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Church of God of Prophecy with burial in the church cemetery.
The Rev. Courtney Coffer and the Rev. Tom Warren conducting the service.
Mrs. Conner, 96, died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2003 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
She was born in Charlotte County on November 20, 1906, a daughter of Robert Linwood Lacks and Mrs. Lucy Brown Hall Lacks, and was married to Lewis Nelson Conner.
Mrs. Conner was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy.
She is survived by five daughters, Florence Williams Davis of Gretna, Dorothy Williams Sneed of South Boston, Myrtle Conner Day of South Boston, Fannie Conner Burton Aman of Brooksville, Florida, and Mary Daniel Andersen of Richmond.
Also surviving are three sons, Charlie Bailey Conner of South Boston, Clinton Hagood Conner of Hampton and Robert Nelson Conner of Richmond.
Other survivors include four sisters, Bessie Myrtle Lacks of Saxe, Cinda Stover Lacks of Richmond, Bertha Alma Womack of Vernon Hill and Frances Hagood King of Scottsburg, and one brother, Robert Berkley Lacks of Richmond, 27 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by six sisters, Lena Townsend, Lottie Lacks, Audie Lacks, Mary Lacks, Eva Lacks, Dorothy Wade, and by her first husband, Flave A. Williams Sr., and two sons, Flave A Williams Jr. and Lewis N. Conner Jr.
The family will receive friends at Powell Funeral Home on Monday from 7:00-8:30 p.m., and at other times at the residence, 9004 James D. Hagood Highway, Scottsburg.
Fulton William Edmonds
Funeral services for Mr. Fulton William Edmonds will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, September 2, 2003, with services at the Christ Temple Blue Rock Holiness Church.
Elder Donald Johnson will officiate.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Mr. Edmonds, of Easley Street in South Boston, died Friday, August 29, 2003, at his residence.
He was 62.
Mr. Edmonds was born in Halifax County on December 25, 1940 to the late Henry Hurt Edmonds and the late Beatrice Hargrove Edmonds.
He was a member of the Christ Temple Blue Rock Holiness Church.
Mr. Edmonds is survived by four daughters, Doraline Miller and Susan Miller, both of Bridgeport, Ct., and Mildred Miller and Bridget Miller, both of Statford, Ct., one son, Donnie Miller of Bridgeport, Ct., 18 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, six sisters, Dorothy Younger, Annie Crawley, Beatrice Tyner and Hazel Edmonds, all of Bridgeport, Hallie Sparks of South Boston and Carolyn Jackson of Rochester, N.Y., nine brothers, Nathaniel Edmonds of Chatham, Henry Lloyd, Joseph Edmonds and Preston Edmonds, all of South Boston, Elijah Edmonds, Irving Edmonds, Gregory Edmonds, James Edmonds and Calvin Edmonds, all of Bridgeport, three aunts and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Sydney Wayne Barnett Sr.
Sydney Wayne Barnett Sr., 'BB', age 60, of Lot 9 Love Shop Trailer Park, South Boston, died September 4, 2003 at Duke University Medical Center.
Mr. Barnett was born in Charlottesville on July 14, 1943, the son of Sydney Wayne Barnett and Thelma Tyree Barnett. He was employed as a carpenter.
Survivors include one daughter, Sylvia Lewis of Mt. Laurel; two sons, Jeffrey F. Barnett of Halifax and Barry A. Barnett of South Boston; one sister, Phyllis B. Almond of Amelia; two half-sisters, Donna Mannoff of Palm Springs, Calif and Delores Truitt of Roanoke; six grandsons, Brandon, Chad and Nicholas Lewis, Wayne, Jeffrey and Alexander Barnett; and four granddaughters, Felicia, Amanda, Anna and Katia Barnett. Other than his parents Mr. Barnett was preceded in death by one son, Sydney Wayne Barnett Jr.
Services will be held at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel tomorrow, September 6, at 2 p.m.
The family will receive friends this evening from 7:00 until 8:30 at Brooks Funeral Home, and other times at the home.
Nancy Wall Crowell
Nancy Wall Crowell, 78, of South Boston, died September 1, 2003 at The Woodview.
Mrs. Crowell was born in South Boston on October 24, 1924, the daughter of Harry Payne Wall and Effie Wall and was married to Thomas A. Crowell. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include one son, Andy Crowell of South Boston; one daughter, Carolyn Hutchinson and husband, Dan, of Richmond; two grandsons, Lee Hutchinson and Andy Aubrey, both of Richmond.
Graveside services for Mrs. Crowell were held yesterday, September 4 at Oak Ridge Cemetery at 4 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Russell Lee officiating.

John Stewart Perkins
John Stewart Perkins, 88, of 2000 Vaughan Street, South Boston died September 4, 2003 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mr. Perkins was born in Halifax County on December 7, 1914, the son of Paul John Perkins and Catherine Jane Perkins Perkins and was married to Mae Palmer Perkins. He was a member of Emanuel Episcopal Church.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Joyce P. Thomasson of Altavista, Penny P. Owen and Tammie P. Thacker, both of Hurt; one son, Kenneth A. Perkins of South Boston; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren
Graveside services for Mr. Perkins will be held today, September 5 at Emanuel Episcopal Church Cemetery at 3 p.m. with the Rev. David Dickerson officiating.

Douglas Eugene Ragland
Douglas Eugene Ragland, 68, of 1402 Irish Street, South Boston, died September 2, 2003 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mr. Ragland was born in Halifax County on March 5, 1935, the son of James Ragland and Helen Harris Ragland. He was married to Marva Nesbit Ragland and was a retired employee of the United States Postal Service.
Survivors include his wife of the home; one daughter, Helen Ragland of Brooklyn, N.Y.; three sons, Jarvis Ragland of Bronx, Charles Ragland of New Brunswick, N.J. and Douglas Paul Ragland of Brooklyn; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandson; three sisters, Virginia R. Oliver of Brooklyn, Dorothy R. Faulkner of Virgilina and Lillian R. Wade of Queens, N.Y.; one brother, Jimmy Ragland of Virgilina. Mr. Ragland was preceded in death by one daughter, Theresa Ragland.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow, September 6, at 2 p.m. at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses with Brother Clarence Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery.

Lura Maxine Talley
Lura Maxine Talley, 80, of 4059 E. Hyco Road, South Boston, died September 4, 2003 at The Woodview.
Ms. Talley was born in Halifax County on September 25, 1922, the daughter of Ida Hudson Cole and Tom Talley. She was a member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one sister, Patsy C. Hughes of Birmingham, Ala.; one brother, George Wallace Cole of South Boston; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Garland West Fisher
Garland West Fisher, 89, of 3237 Chestnut Road, Nathalie, died September 4, 2003 at Autumn Care Nursing Home in Altavista.
Mr. Fisher was born in Halifax County on July 5, 1914, the son of Richard D. Fisher and Ora Roark Fisher and was married to Ruth DeJarnette Fisher. He was a member of Republican Grove United Methodist Church where he served as treasurer for 25 years. He was also a member of Hurt Masonic Lodge #312 and the Woodmen of the World.
Mr. Fisher was a retired farmer and drove a school bus for Halifax County Public Schools for 39 years.
Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Ruth Fisher Medley and husband, David, of Richmond; one son, Richard Marshall Fisher and wife, Dana, of Hurt; two grandchildren, Alicia F. Hedges of Raleigh, N.C. and Michelle L. Medley of Richmond; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Garland W. Fisher Jr.
Funeral services for Mr. Fisher were held Sunday, September 7 at 2 p.m. at Republican Grove United Methodist Church with the Revs. Bob Newcomb, Sam Cardwell and Latta Terry officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Hubbard, 98, of Halifax, died Saturday, Sept. 6, 2003, at The Woodview.
She was born in Richmond on July 17, 1905, a daughter of Alexander Forest Hubbard and Solena Ragland Moorefield Dunkley, and was married to Eugene Forest Hubbard.
Mrs. Hubbard was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church.
She is survived by one niece, Dr. Patricia Dunn of Greenville, N.C., and special friends Mrs. Annie Lee Montague of Raleigh, N.C. and her daughters Nancy Massey, Sue Daughtry and Janet Gropp, also of Raleigh, N.C.
Sylvia Robertson Roark
Mrs. Sylvia Robertson Roark of Danville, formerly of Halifax County, died September 6, 2003 at Roman Eagle Nursing Home.
Mrs. Roark was 88-years-old at the time of her death.
Mrs. Sylvia Robertson Roark was born October 14, 1914 in Crystal, West Virginia, the daughter of Fletcher Conrad Robertson and Cara Booth Robertson.
She was married to Silas Herman Roark Sr. and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Millstone.
Mrs. Roark is survived by two sons, Silas Herman "Buddy" Roark Jr., of Chatham, and James Fletcher Roark and wife Lynda of Stuarts Draft; three daughters, Patricia Roark Reynolds and husband Tom of Harrisonburg, Reita Roark Bowles and husband George Everett of Danville, and Brenda Roark Guill of Hillsboro, N.C.; 11 grandchildren; and 20 great grandchildren.
Mrs. Roark was preceded in death by her husband, Silas Herman Roark Sr., and one grandson, Silas Herman "Si" Roark III.
Funeral services for Mrs. Sylvia Robertson Roark will be held tomorrow, September 9, at 2 p.m., at First Baptist Church of Millstone, with the Rev. Dr. Tom Reynolds and the Rev. Jeff Bedwell conducting the service.
Burial will take place in the church cemetery.

Evelyn Hendren Faulkner, 56, of 1508 Ridge Street, South Boston, died September 7, 2003 at her home.
Mrs. Faulkner was born in Halifax County on August 11, 1947, the daughter of the late Richard Hendren Sr. and Lucinda Coates Hendren and was married to the late Edward Faulkner. She was a former employee of Tultex, Inc.
Survivors include one daughter, Sherrell Ragsdale of South Boston; one sister, Alberta Green of Danville; six brothers, Jesse Hendren, James Hendren, Robert Hendren and Richard Hendren Jr., all of South Boston, Samuel Hendren and John Hendren, both of Whitesville, N.C.; one son-in-law, Donald Ragsdale; three grandchildren; and one great-grandson. Mrs. Faulkner was also preceded in death by one son, Kelly D. Hendren; and one sister, Ethel Hodge.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow, September 11 at 1 p.m. at the Chapel of Jeffress Funeral Home with the Rev. Sandy Palmer officiating. Burial will follow in the Faulkner Family Cemetery.

Lacy Gunn Moore, 75, of 746 Magnolia Drive, South Boston, died September 7, 2003 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mr. Moore was born in Halifax County on March 24, 1928, the son of Garland Moore and Florence Moore and was married to Gladys Conner Moore. He was a member of The Church of God.
Survivors include his wife; and one son, Carroll Dean Moore of South Boston. He was preceded in death by a son, Gerald Kent Moore.
Graveside services for Mr. Moore will be held today, September 10 at Halifax Memorial Gardens at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Grant Dyer officiating.
