Lura Maxine Talley
Lura Maxine Talley, 80, of 4059 E. Hyco Road, South Boston, died September 4, 2003 at The Woodview.
Ms. Talley was born in Halifax County on September 25, 1922, the daughter of Ida Hudson Cole and Tom Talley. She was a member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one sister, Patsy C. Hughes of Birmingham, Ala.; one brother, George Wallace Cole of South Boston; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Graveside services for Ms. Talley were held September 6 at 11 a.m. in Oak Ridge Cemetery with the Rev. Tony Sisk officiating.

John Carl Allred
John Carl Allred Jr., 69, husband of Susan Muse Allred, died September 10, 2003 in a S.C. hospital.
Mr. Allred was born November 3, 1933, in Durham, N.C., the son of the late John Carl Allred and Mabel Smart Allred. He is a graduate of the University of Richmond and the University of North Carolina. He was a past director of Physicians' Services at Sheltering Arms Rehabilitation Hospital in Richmond, a senior vice president of Allred and Associates, a vice president and senior broker of Anderson and Strudwick, and the dean of students at Virginia Intermont College.
Mr. Allred is survived by his wife; three sons, Joseph B. Allred, Andrew F. Allred, and Benjamin T. Allred and his wife, Marie, of Richmond; a stepdaughter, Elizabeth C. Scott of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; one sister, Betty A. Ferguson and her husband, Murry, of Blowing Rock, N.C.; two granddaughters, Julia Kittrell Allred and Ann Garrett Allred of Richmond.
A memorial service for Mr. Allred will be held September 13, in Christ Episcopal Church, Mt. Pleasant at 3 p.m. Burial will be in Virgilina Cemetery, Virgilina, Tuesday, September 16 at 10:30 a.m.

Mary Buster Canada
Mary Buster Canada, 87, of 8068 Coles Ferry Road, Nathalie died September 10, 2003 at Berry Hill Nursing Home.
She was born in Halifax County on March 8, 1916, the daughter of the late Allen Buster and Paulina Garrett Buster and was married to the late Floyd Alexander Canada. She was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses.
Survivors of Mrs. Canada include four daughters, Clarrinza Guthrie and Connie Jones, both of Nathalie, Mary Christine Garrett of Clover and Shirley Jones of Skipwith; two sons, James Canada and Johnnie Canada, both of Nathalie; 18 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mamie Reid of Nathalie; and one stepsister, Mollie Barksdale of New York, N.Y.
Funeral services for Mrs. Canada will be held September 13 at 11 a.m. at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses. Burial will follow in Ellis Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the home.
Anthony Lacy Guthrie
Anthony Lacy Guthrie, 73, of 1025 Crossroads Trail, Nathalie died September 10, 2003 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
He was born in Halifax County on July 4, 1930, the son of the late Joe Henry Guthrie and Winnie Brown Guthrie and was married to Clarrinza Canada Guthrie. He was a member of Traynham Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife; one stepdaughter, Sylvia Canada of Nathalie; two stepsons, Linwood Canada of Fredericksburg and Sherman Canada of Nathalie; three stepgrandchildren; one great-step-grandchild; one brother Charlie Guthrie of Texas; and one daughter-in-law, Athea Dunn Canada of Fredericksburg.
Funeral services for Mr. Guthrie will be held September 13 at 3 p.m. at Traynham Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. William Keen officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

James Franklin Lawson
James Franklin Lawson, 78, of 1032 Cherry Hill Church Road, South Boston, died September 9, 2003 at his home.
He was born February 27, 1925, in Halifax County to the late Aaron Lawson and the late Susie Faulkner Lawson. Mr. Lawson was a retired truck driver and had served in the United States Navy.
Survivors include four sisters, Annie M. Crawley, Mary Owen and Alie Tuck, all of South Boston, and Beulah Murphy of Washington, D.C.; two brothers, Daniel Lawson of South Boston and Otis Lawson of Hampton.
Funeral services for Mr. Lawson will be held September 13 at 1 p.m. at Zion Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Thomas Bolden officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Military Rites will be provided by the American Legion Post 29 Honor Guard.
Lillie Brooks Pierce
Funeral services for Lillie Brooks Pierce, 96, of 107 Hunter Road, Brookneal, will be held September 13, 2003 at 2 p.m. at Henderson Funeral Chapel by the Revs. Gary Vernon and Leslie Rowsey. Burial will follow at Clover Bottom Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mrs. Pierce was born in Pittsylvania County on May 15, 1907, the daughter of the late Richard Nathan Brooks and Mary Neal Brooks, and was married to the late William Isiah Pierce. She was a member of Brookneal Church of God of Prophecy and was a homemaker.
Mrs. Pierce died September 10, 2003 in Lynchburg Health and Rehab. Center.
Survivors include one son, Clyde Pierce and wife, Frances, of Brookneal; six daughters, Virginia Seamster of Clover, S.C., Mary Rudder of Nathalie, Betty Rudder of Phenix, Barbara Fears and husband, John, of Brookneal, Katherine S. Hailey and husband, Stanley, of Nathalie, and Dorothy Martin of Brookneal; one sister, Lillian Payne of Gretna; one brother, Willie Brooks of Gretna; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Pierce was preceded in death by a grandson, Paul Seamster; two daughters, Mary Jane Pierce and Alice Core; two sisters; and one brother.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 7:30 this evening at Henderson Funeral Home, Brookneal, and other times at the home.
Earl D. Fisher
Earl D. Fisher, 70, of Richmond died September 11, 2003. He was born April 14, 1933, in Nathalie, the son of the late Presley Thornton Fisher and Minnie Crews Fisher. He was predeceased by his son, Randal Earl Fisher; a sister, Mary Fisher Allen; and a brother, Clarence Fisher.
Mr. Fisher was a United States Navy Veteran of the Korean conflict and served aboard the USS Neptune. He was an employee of Reynolds Metal for 32 years retiring in 1989. He was a member of Falling Creek Baptist Church where he served as a deacon.
Survivors include his wife, Frances Jones Fisher; a daughter, Jeannie Meade and her husband, Monroe; a son, Jeffrey and his wife, Cindy; grandchildren, Justin, Daniel, Bailey and Chris Fisher his stepdaughters, Kay Jensen and her husband, Kim, Sharon Dardoufas and her husband, Chris, and Mitzi Sizemore; step grandchildren, Kameron and Kristen Jensen, Jillian and George Dardoufas, Nathan Schold and Mason Sizemore; sisters, Mildred Roller and her husband, Frank, Edna Guthrie and her husband, David; brothers Lennie ‘Pete,’ Barkley, Carl and Watkins and his wife, Elaine.
A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
Sydnor Wade Knight
Sydnor Wade Knight, 63, of South Boston, died September 11, 2003, at her residence.
Mrs. Knight was born in Halifax County on November 12, 1939, the daughter of the late Arthur Lee Wade and Myrtle Pointer Wade and was married to George William Knight. She was a former Hardee’s restaurant manager.
Mrs. Knight is survived by her husband; two daughters, Jacqueline D. Ford of South Boston and Tammy D. Humphrey of Oakland, Calif., one son, William T. Ford of South Boston, nine grandchildren, six great grandchildren, two sisters, Jeraline Myers of Schenectady, N.Y., and Marion Hester of South Boston, two brothers Willis L. Wade of Hercules, Calif., and Clifton Wade of San Francisco, Calif., one son-in-law, three brothers-in-law, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Mrs. Knight will be held at the chapel of Jeffress Funeral Home today at noon. Burial will follow in the Oak Ridge Cemetery.
Rebecca L. Palmer
Rebecca L. Palmer, 86, of Upper Marlboro, Md., formerly of Vernon Hill, died September 11, 2003 at Mariner Health of greater Laurel Facility in Laurel, Md.
Mrs. Palmer was born in Halifax County on April 24, 1917, the daughter of Tom Leigh and Maria Sweeney Leigh.
Funeral services were held September 14 at 2 p.m. at Blue Rock Pentecostal Church in Vernon Hill with Elder D. Johnson officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Michele Rose Poppe
Michele Rose Poppe, 51, of Nathalie, died September 13, 2003, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mrs. Poppe was born in Point Pleasant, N.J., on April 19, 1952, the daughter of Anthony J. Festa and Dorthy Tedessco Festa and was married to Ross Poppe.
She was a member of the St. Paschal Catholic Church.
Mrs. Poppe is survived by her husband; three sons, Joseph Poppe and wife, Jackie, of Richmond, Richard Lapham and wife, Charlene, of Groton, Conn., and Timothy Poppe of Brick, N.J., two daughters, Kathleen Poppe of Toms River, N.J., and Renee Brinson and husband, Mike, of Raleigh, N.C., one grandson, Anthony James Lapham of Groton, Conn., one sister, Annette Queck and husband, Bill, of Brick, N.J., and one special niece, Michele Griffin, of Westwood, N.J.
Funeral services for Mrs. Poppe will be held Tuesday, September, 16, at St. Paschal Catholic Church at 11 a.m. with Sister Edna Maier officiating.
The family will receive friends at the Powell Funeral Home tonight from seven to 8:30 p.m. and all other times at the home.

Mary Christine Smith Spencer
Mary Christine Smith Spencer, 88, of South Boston, died September 12, 2003 at the Woodview.
Mrs. Spencer was born in Halifax County on June 28, 1915, the daughter of Lee Toliver Smith and Mary Beth Weatherford Smith and was married to Guy Henry Spencer Sr.
She was a member of the Main Street United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Spencer is survived by two sons, Guy H. Spencer Jr. and wife, Donna Kay, of Houston, Texas, and Lee Toliver Spencer and wife, Sandra, of Wilson, N.C., four granddaughters, Elizabeth Brooke Spencer and Katherine Blair Spencer, both of Wilson, N.C., Sara Beth Spencer and Angela Rena Spencer, both of Houston, Texas, and two grandsons, Matthew Guy Spencer and Samuel Wayne Lee Spencer, both of Houston, Texas.
Funeral services for Mrs. Spencer will be held Tuesday, September 16, in the Powell Funeral Home Chapel at 7 p.m. with the Rev. Doug Martin officiating.
Burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery Wednesday, September 17, at 10 a.m.

Mildred Dixon Weatherford
Mildred Dixon Weatherford, 86, of 4106 Chatham Road, Halifax, died September 11, 2003 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mrs. Weatherford was born in Halifax County on April 15, 1917, the daughter of Samuel Luke Dixon and Mattie Moore Dixon and was married to William Burton Weatherford Sr. She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church where she was a member of the church choir and president of the United Methodist Women. She was a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.
Survivors include her husband; one daughter and son-in-law, Margaret W. Hudson and husband, Eric, of South Boston; one son and daughter-in-law, William B. Weatherford Jr. and wife, Diane, of Halifax; one brother, Roger J. Dixon and his wife, Wanda, of Richmond; one sister, Elizabeth Dixon Robertson of Roanoke; two grandsons, Bryon Eric Hudson and wife, Julie, of Danville, and Timothy Lee Weatherford of Halifax; two step-grandchildren, Mark Conner of Richmond and Marie Jones and husband, Keith of Thomasville, N.C.; two great-grandsons, Benjamin Hudson and Ethan Hudson; one step-great-granddaughter, Emily Grace Jones. Mrs. Weatherford was preceded in death by an infant son, three brothers and two sisters.
Funeral services were held September 14 at 2 p.m. at Asbury United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Roger Wilborn officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Carlton F. Saunders
Carlton F. Saunders of Richmond, died September 15, 2003 at his home.
He was the son of the late Clarence and Edna Saunders and was married to Dianne Plumbo Saunders.
Survivors include his wife; three children, Margaret Wagenknecht and her husband, George, Sherrie Houser and husband, Eric, and Michael Saunders and wife, Amie; four grandchildren, Miranda Gayle Winn, Diana Jean Wagenknecht, Emily Houser and Cole Saunders; two brothers, Henry L. Saunders of Midlothian and Clinton Ray Saunders of Richmond; four sisters, Margaret Sims, Shirley Reeson and Dorothy Overacre, all of Richmond, and Brenda Anderson of Halifax.
Funeral services for Mr. Saunders will be held at 2 p.m. today, September 17, at Bliley's Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Dale Memorial Cemetery.
Mary Liza Bates Harris
Mary Liza Bates Harris, 88, of 1024 College Street, South Boston, formerly of Nathalie, died September 17, 2003 in South Boston.
Mrs. Harris was born in Halifax County on February 27, 1915, the daughter of Harry Lee Bates and Sarah Poindexter Bates and was married to David Harris. She was a member of Sunflower Baptist Church.
Survivors include two brothers, Richard W. Bates of Nathalie and Dr. Jesse J. Bates of South Boston; one sister-in-law, Marian W. Bates of Richmond. Mrs. Harris was preceded in death by one son, Rodney Harris; and one brother, H. Louis Bates.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow, September 20 at 3 p.m. at Sunflower Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert Tucker officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Annie Jeffress Rickman
Annie Jeffress Rickman, 93, of Clover died September 18, 2003 at Berry Hill Nursing Home.
Miss Rickman was born in Halifax County on December 22, 1909, the daughter of James Thomas Rickman and Lottie Lacks Rickman. She was a member of Mt. Laurel United methodist Church where she was the oldest living member. She was a member of the choir and taught Sunday School.
Miss Rickman taught second grade in the Halifax County school System for 43 years teaching at Clays Mill, Bethel, Mt. Laurel, Red Level, and Scottsburg.
Survivors include two sisters, Agnes Dollaye of Chester and Alice Hardie of Lexington, Ky.; two brothers, Isaac 'Ike' Rickman and wife, Frances, of Richmond, and Irvin Rickman and wife, Louise, of Mechanicsville; another sister-in-law, Mildred Rickman of Clover. She was preceded in death by a brother, James Thomas Rickman Jr.
Funeral services for Miss Rickman will be held tomorrow, September 20 at 2 p.m. at Mt. Laurel United Methodist church with the Revs. Wayne Rickman and Don Pizzeck officiating. Burial will take place in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Powell Funeral Home this evening from 6:00 until 8:30.
Amethyst Adams Bebber
A memorial service for Mrs. Amethyst May Adams Bebber will be held Sunday, September 28, 2003, at Cherry Hill United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Jason Bryant officiating.
Visitation will be at the home at 2243 Ponderosa Road, South Boston.
Mrs. Bebber, 78, a retired restaurant owner, died Thursday, Sept. 18, 2003 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
She was a member of the Greenpointe Writer's Group in Greenville, N.C., and an author and publisher of Halifax County history.
Mrs. Bebber was born May 25, 1925 in Pennsylvania, a daughter of the late William and Callie Palmer Adams.
She is survived by her husband, James C. "Jake" Bebber of South Boston, two sons, Kenneth Palmer and wife Deborah of Concord, N.C., and Michael Palmer and wife Lori of Greenville, N.C.
Also surviving are three stepsons, J.C. Bebber Jr. of Hesperia, California, Dennis Gene Bebber of Mt. Dora, Florida, and Don Wayne Bebber of Vero Beach, Florida, and one stepdaughter, Jane Carol Walrod of Martinsville, and two sisters, Jewel McCormick of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Agate Briley of South Boston, seven grandchildren, nine step-grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by one grandchild.
