Sylvia Barnette Butler

Funeral services for Mrs. Sylvia Barnette Butler of South Boston will be held Tuesday, September 23, 2003, at 1 p.m. in Jeffress Funeral Home Chapel, with burial in the Memorial Baptist Church Cemetery.

Brother Clarence Jones will officiate.

Mrs. Butler, 46, died Thursday, Sept. 18, 2003 at the Medical College of Virginia.

She was born in Washington, D.C., on March 20, 1957, a daughter of the late James Barnette and Queenia Sanford Barnette, and was married to Samuel Butler.

Mrs. Butler is survived by her husband, Samuel Butler; two daughters, Queenia Barnette and Samantha Hutcherson, both of South Boston; two sons, Mervin Traynham of Alton and Marvin Traynham of South Boston; three stepchildren, Ashley Butler, Alexis Butler and Samuel Butler III, all of Baltimore, Maryland; and five grandchildren.

Other survivors include two sisters, Courtney Barnette of South Boston and Brenda Johnson of Oxon Hill, Maryland; three brothers, Silas Barnette and Lionel Barnette, both of South Boston, and James Barnette Jr. of Newark, N.J.; two sisters-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

The family will receive friends at the home of Marvin Traynham, 220 Fairmont Apartments in South Boston.

Catherine Childress

A funeral service for Mrs. Catherine Bailey Childress was held Saturday at Mt. Pleasant CME Church, with burial in the church cemetery.

The Rev. Sandra Young conducted the services.

Mrs. Childress, 76, of Mountain Road, died Tuesday, September 16, 2003, in Augusta, Georgia.

She was born in Halifax County on February 15, 1927, a daughter of the late Samuel and Brady Bailey, and was married to Robert Earl Childress Sr.
Mrs. Childress was a member of the New Bethel Baptist Church.

She is survived by two sons, Robert Earl Childress Jr. of Detroit and Ronald Eugene Childress of Halifax, one daughter, Ellen Childress King of Augusta, Georgia, nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Other survivors include one sister, Cornelius Long of Queens, N.Y.; three brothers, Lewis Bailey of Queens, N.Y., John Bailey Sr. of Halifax and Sherman Bailey of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and other relatives and friends.

John Thomas Coleman

John Thomas Coleman of 2121 Wilson Memorial Trail, Vernon Hill, died Wednesday, September 17, 2003, at Halifax Regional Hospital. He was 75.

A funeral for Mr. Coleman was held yesterday, Sunday, September 21, 2003, at 2 p.m., at Ellis Creek Baptist Church.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Coleman was born in Halifax County on March 14, 1928. He was the son of the late John Thomas Coleman Sr. and the late Sarah Lacks Coleman.

He was a member of Court Street Baptist Church.

Coleman is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Olivia Wilkins of Brooklyn, N.Y. and Mrs. Loretta Wright of Madison Heights.

Also surviving are seven sisters, Ms. Estelle Coleman and Mrs. Eva Bates of South Boston, Ms. Mozelle Coleman of Yanceyville, N.C., Mrs. Mazy Brown of Halifax, Mrs. Lenora Bowman and Mrs. Pearl Coleman of New York, Ms. Katherine Coleman of Vernon Hill and Mrs. Pauline Cousins of New Jersey, and one brother, Paul Coleman of Vernon Hill.

Six grandchildren, one great grandchild, two sisters-in-law and many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends also survive.

James Douglas King

A graveside service for James Douglas King was held Sunday at Oak Ridge Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Russell Lee conducting the service.

Mr. King, 84, died Thursday, Sept. 18, 2003 at his South Boston residence.

A Halifax County native, he was born November 5, 1918, a son of George Benjamin King Sr. and Dorothy Bondurant King, and was married to Sue Guill King.

Mr. King was a co-owner of G.B. King & Son Inc., a business started by his father in 1914, until 1989.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of South Boston.

Mr. King is survived by his wife, Sue G. King of South Boston; one daughter, Pamela King Green of Locust Hill, Va.; one stepson, John W.J. Warren of Greenville, N.C.; one granddaughter, Kimberely Green Bratton of Apex, N.C.; and two great-grandsons.

Other survivors include two sisters, Dorothy King Meeler of South Boston and Edna King Stone of Blackstone.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Bessie A. King, and four brothers, George Benjamin Jr., Kenneth Cameron, Thomas E. and Nelson Burrus King.

Larvee Cassada Lacks
A funeral service for Mrs. Larvee Nina Cassada Lacks was held Saturday, September 20, 2003, at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel in South Boston, with burial at the Lacks Family Cemetery off of Black Walnut Road.

The Rev. Ronnie Talley officiated.

Mrs. Lacks, 58, a homemaker, died Thursday, Sept. 18, 2003 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
She was born January 19, 1945 in Halifax County.

Mrs. Lacks is survived by her husband, Bobby G. Lacks of Randolph; a son,
Stacy Lacks, also of Randolph; two sisters, Carolyn Cassada of Red Oak and Marilyn Terriaght of Hampton; two brothers, Olivine Cassada of Red Oak and Ronald Cassada of Chase City.

Other survivors include two grandsons, Brandon Lacks and Jarred Lacks, two granddaughters, Heather Lacks and Autumn Lacks.

Mrs. Lacks was predeceased by her father and mother, Noel and Ruby Cassada, two sons, Bobby Bret Lacks and Rocky Lane Lacks, and one brother, Waddel Cassada.

Geraldine Smith

A funeral service for Mrs. Geraldine Waddell Smith was held Sunday, September 21, at Dan River Baptist Church, with burial in the church cemetery.

The Rev. John Eure and the Rev. Leonard Watlington officiated.
Mrs. Smith, 62, died Thursday, Sept. 18, 2003 at Duke University Hospital.

She was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on Sept. 12, 1941, a daughter of James Z. Waddell Sr. and Helen Kessler Waddell and was married to Oliver Blane Smith.

She was a member of the Dan River Baptist Church and was retired from Wachovia Bank.

Mrs. Smith is survived by her husband, Oliver Blane Smith of Highland Hills Drive, Halifax; two daughters, Kimberly Ann Koenig of Virginia Beach and Kellie Farrar Wilkins of Alton; two sons, Jeffrey Wayne Farrar of Culpeper and Adam Blane Smith of Halifax; and three stepsons, Dr. Carrington Duane Smith of Santa Barbara, California, Jeffrey Dale Smith of Halifax and Gerald Vann Smith of South Boston.

Other survivors include one sister, Shirley Snyder of French Creek, West Virginia, one foster sister, Dorothy Green of Greensboro, N.C., and eight grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, James Richard Farrar, and by one brother, James Z. Waddell Jr.

Woodard Harris Spell

A funeral service for Woodard Harris Spell will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel, with burial in Oak Ridge Cemetery with military rites.

The Rev. Bob Watts and the Rev. Andy Bawtree will conduct the service.
Mr. Spell, 77, died Saturday, Sept. 20, 2003 at Halifax Regional Hospital.

He was a member of the American Legion and the Sons of Confederate Veterans, and served in the U.S. Navy.

He was born January 30, 1926 in Princeton, N.C., a son of Woodard Harris Spell Sr. and Herchel Davis Spell Brewer, and was married to Sara Lawrence Spell.

Mr. Spell is survived by his wife, Sara Spell of Halifax; five daughters, Gayle Spell Clements of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Susan Spell McCormick of St. Simons Island, Georgia; Libby Phillips of Richmond; Sandra Spell McGregor and Patricia Spell Barger, both of South Boston; and four sons, Larry Steven Spell of Sutherlin; David Woodard Spell, Glenn Harrison Spell and John Lawrence Spell, all of Halifax.

Also surviving are one half-sister, Shirley Every; one half-brother, Glenn Harris Spell of Princeton, N.C.; three stepchildren, Sara Katherine MacQueen of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, William M. Phillips of St. Augustine, Florida, and Rebecca Teague of Savannah, Georgia; 12 grandchildren, one great-grandchild and five step-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Woodard Harris Spell III, in 1998.
The family will receive friends at Powell Funeral Home on Monday from 7:00-8:30 p.m., and at other times at his home, 7071 Chatham Road.

John Prentice Garland Sr.

John Prentice Garland Sr., 76, of 1107 New Bethel Road, Alton died September 22, 2003 at Berry Hill Nursing Home.

Mr. Garland was born in Bluefield, WVa. on July 21, 1927, the son of the late John 'Ned' Garland and Etta Chiles Garland and was married to the late Serena Hamlett Garland. He was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church, and was formerly employed by Dan River Mills, Inc.

Survivors include two daughters, Edna Fields of Alton and Joyce Garland of Semora, N.C.; one son, John Garland Jr. of Durham, N.C.; two sisters, Edith Hamlett of Semora and Dorothy Cunningham of South Boston; one brother, Alfred Garland of South Boston; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for Mr. Garland will be held September 26 at 2 p.m. at New Bethel baptist Church with the Rev. Harvey Bigelow officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family is receiving friends at the home.

Rosalie Steube Woltz

Rosalie Steube Woltz, 75, of 11197 Bill Tuck Highway, Buffalo Junction, died September 19, 2003 at her home.

Mrs. Woltz was born in Halifax County on September 5, 1928, the daughter of Edward Steube and Myrtle Talbott Steube and was married to Thomas Howerton Woltz. She was a member of Aarons Creek Baptist Church, the Order of the Eastern Star #145 and was a former leader of the Aarons Creek 4-H Club.

Survivors include two sons, Jerry Steube Woltz of Buffalo Junction and Edward Thomas Woltz and wife, Joni, of Virgilina; two grandchildren, Abby Paige Woltz and Ethan Owen Woltz, both of Virgilina; and one sister, Frances Steube Elliott of Halifax.

Funeral services for Mrs. Woltz were held September 21, 2003 at 2 p.m. at Aarons Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill McEntire officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Those wishing to give memorials are asked to consider Aarons Creek Baptist Church Building Fund.

Rosa Majors Davis

Rosa Majors Davis, 73, of 1925 Spring Avenue, South Boston, died September 21, 2003 at Prince George County Hospital in Cheverly, Md.

Mrs. Davis was born in Halifax County on November 19, 1929, the daughter of the late Artie Majors and Ella Jackson Majors. She was a member of Ebenezer CME Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Sandra Davis-Johnson of Forestville, Md. and Audrey Davis-Sehon of Sunnyval, Calif. Mrs. Davis was preceded in death by one son, Samuel Davis; and one daughter, Gloria Y. Davis.

Funeral services for Mrs. Davis will be held tomorrow, September 27, 2003 at 1 p.m. at Jeffress Funeral Home Chapel with Bishop Anthony Miller officiating. Burial will follow in Halifax Memorial Gardens.

The family is receiving friends at the home.

Mabel Carter Gibbs

Mabel Carter Gibbs, 95, of Annapolis, Md. died September 23, 2003 at The Woodview Nursing Home in South Boston.

Mrs. Gibbs was born in Bristol, Tenn. January 12, 1908, the daughter of James E. Carter and Mary Anderson Carter and was married to Charles E. Gibbs. She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Annapolis, and was retired librarian and music instructor with Arundel County, Md. Public Schools. Mrs. Gibbs was a active member of Annapolis Order of Links, Inc. and Annapolis Chapter of the A.K.A. Sorority.

Survivors include one grandson, William T. Hayes of Atlanta, Ga. and one daughter-in-law, Regina Carden Hayes of Rochester, N.Y., formerly of Scottsburg. Mrs. Gibbs was preceded in death by one son, William W. Hayes.

Graveside services will be held September 29, 2003 at 2 p.m. at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Annapolis.

The family will receive friends Saturday afternoon from 4:00 until 5:00 at the Chapel of Jeffress Funeral Home in South Boston.

James Bennie Matthews

James Bennie Matthews, 57, of Danville, died September 23, 2003 in Pittsylvania County.

Mr. Matthews was born May 3, 1946, in Mecklenburg County the son of Lemuel Perry Matthews and Pattie Fuller Matthews and was married to Phyllis Blackmon Matthews.

He was retired from Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company and was a member of Buffalo Junction Baptist Tabernacle and American Legion Post 325. Mr. Matthews served with the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War.

Survivors include his wife of the home; one daughter, Amber Matthews Barber and husband, Ryan Lee Barber, of Danville; one brother, William Perry Matthews and wife, Pattie Seat Matthews, of Buffalo Junction; one sister, Peggy Matthews Jacobs of Hopewell; his father of Buffalo Junction; and one grandson, Lleyton Matthew Barber of Danville.

Funeral services for Mr. Matthews will be held today, September 26, 2003, at 11 a.m. at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel in Danville. The Rev. David Pruitt will officiate. Burial will take place at 3 p.m. in Buffalo Junction Baptist Tabernacle Cemetery.

Col. Charles Clarke Mish

Col. Charles Clarke Mish USAF (Ret), age 85, of San Antonio, Texas died Tuesday, September 16, 2003.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mickie Mish.

Survivors include two sons, Stephen Clarke Mish and his wife, Jayne, of Corinth, Texas, and Thomas McDowell Mish and his wife, Dianne, of Southlake, Texas; grandchildren, Capt. Jerry D. Mish (USAF) and wife, Shaleigh, of Laughlin AFB, Katherine M. Mish, of Austin, Texas, and Lauren A. Mish, Southlake; one sister-in-law, Anne Barnette and husband, Milton, of Farmville, N.C.

Graveside services will be held September 29 at 10 a.m. at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. Chaplain Al Hockaday officiating.

Those who desire may make memorials to Air Force Village II Freedom House or the American Cancer Society.
