Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

Fred Lee Taylor

Fred Lee Taylor, 71, of 2039 Love Shop Road, Halifax, died September 23, 2003 at his home.

Mr. Taylor was born in Halifax County on March 29, 1932, the son of the late Fred Robert Taylor and Mary Hundley Taylor and was married to Rosie Brown Taylor. He was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses.

Survivors include his wife; four sisters, Clara Abbott of Nathalie, Corrine Watkins of Oxon Hill, Md., Mary Taylor of South Boston and Queen Dixon of Halifax.

Funeral services for Mr. Taylor will be held tomorrow, September 27, at 11 a.m. at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses with Bro. Phillip Lewis officiating. Burial will take place at Virginia Veterans Cemetery in Amelia, at a later date.

The family is receiving friends at the home.

William Burton Chappell Jr.

William Burton ‘Burt’ Chappell Jr., 49, of Julian, N.C., died at his home on September 18, 2003.

Funeral services were held September 20 at St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Greensboro, N.C. Burial followed at Lake View Memorial Park Cemetery. A reception was held at the Church of the Holy Spirit, where Mr. Chappell was a founding member.

Born August 13, 1954, in South Boston, he was the son of the late William Burton ‘Billy’ Chappell Sr. and Eva Brown Chappell. During his illness he was a volunteer at the American Cancer Society.

Mr. Chappell is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Carlton Chappell; one daughter, Erin Elizabeth Chappell; two sons, William Burton Chappell III and Seth Philip Chappell, all of the home; one sister, Penny Chappell-Lloyd and his brother-in-law, David Jesse Lloyd, of Halifax. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, John Phillip Chappell, Florrie Chappell Moore, Richard ‘Doc’ Brown and Mary Ellen Brown.

John Holland Cole

A funeral service for John Holland Cole of Lowery Road will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel, with burial at North Fork Baptist Church Cemetery in Virgilina.

The Rev. Bill LaWall will officiate.

Mr. Cole, 92, died Friday, Sept. 26, 2003 in Richmond.

The last 13 years Mr. Cole resided at his home with his granddaughter Jackie Marvel, her husband Beau, and great-grandchildren Sam and Brittney.

Mr. Cole, a retired farmer, attended North Fork Baptist Church and was a member of Hyco Road Ruritan Club.

He was born April 5, 1911, a son of the late John Robert Cole and Maddie Spencer Cole, and was married to the late Velma Lowery Cole.

He is survived by two sons, Marshall Cole of Chesterfield and Sherell Cole of Mechanicsville, two daughters, Joyce Cole Slaughter of Colonial Heights and Joan Cole Morgan of Richmond, nine grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Owen Mayfield Conner

Graveside services for Mr. Owen Mayfield Conner will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, September 29, 2003, at the Halifax Memorial Gardens.

The Rev. Jack Stewart will officiate.

Mr. Conner, of Old Cluster Springs Road in South Boston, died Friday, Sept. 26, 2003 at his home.

He was 68.

Mr. Conner was born in Halifax County on July 9, 1935 to the late Nannie Faulker Conner and the late Lewis Mayfield Conner and was married to the late Erlene Clayton Conner.

He was a veteran of the United States Army and was a retired truck driver for R.O. Harrell, Inc.

Mr. Conner is survived by one stepson, Dean Wilkerson and family of Mebane, N.C., three brothers, Raymond Allen Conner and wife Judy of Rockville, Maryland., William C. "Billy" Conner and wife Hazel of Bay City, Texas, Robert D. "Buck" Conner and wife Doris of South Boston, two sisters, Rosalie C. Perkins of Halifax and Joyce C. Hernandez of South Boston.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Roy Lee Conner.

Jessie Edward Crews

Funeral services for Mr. Jessie Edward Crews will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, September 30, 2003 at the Powell Funeral Home Chapel.

Burial will follow at the Halifax Memorial Gardens.

Mr.Crews died September 28, 2003 at his home.

He was 74.

Mr. Crews was born in Pittsylvania County on February 9, 1929 to the late Richard S. Crews and the late Pocohantas Holt Crews, was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and was married to Elgie Brunson Crews.

He is survived by his wife, four sons, Steven Lloyd Crews of South Boston, Jesse Crews Jr., of Tallahassee, Fl., Richard Crews of Leesburg, Joseph Crews of Harrisonburg, Pa., two daughters, Debbie Bledsoe of Port St. John, Fl., and Antoinette Waldie of Scottsburg, two stepdaughters, Sharon Harris of Greensboro, N.C. and Betty Ann Thompson of Remington, Va., two step-sons, Kim Hall of South Boston and Curtis S. Hall of Jacksonville, Fl., one brother, Warnie Crews of Lynchburg, one sister, Lorine Hall of South Boston, 26 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Stuart Wayne Harris
Funeral services for Stuart Wayne Harris of Terrys Bridge Road will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel, with burial in Oak
Ridge Cemetery.

The Rev. Dennis Ball will officiate.

Mr. Harris, 54, died Friday, Sept. 26, 2003, at his home in Scottsburg.
He was a truck driver for Arney Lloyd Trucking, and a member of the Baptist faith.

Mr. Harris was born May 3, 1949, a son of the late Wade Harris and Corrie Mae Moss Griffin, and is married to Meria M. Harris.

He is survived by his wife, one stepdaughter, Lisa L. Lowery of Alton and husband Monty, two stepsons, Earl Long of Alton and wife Gail, and Kenneth Eugene Long of Ellettsville, IN., and wife Debra, two half brothers, John Robert Griffin of Halifax and wife Mary Lynn, and Larry Griffin of Acworth, Georgia, and wife Kim, six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and five nieces and nephews.

The family requests that those wishing to give memorials please consider the Scottsburg Volunteer Fire Department or Clover Volunteer Fire Department.

Addie Elizabeth Via Hylton

Addie Elizabeth Via Hylton, 78, of Collinsville died September 23, 2003 at Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Hylton was born in Patrick County on February 8, 1925, the daughter of the late Solomon G. Via and Lucy Jane Bryant Via and was married to the late E.G. Hylton Jr. She was of the Baptist Faith.

Survivors include one daughter, Vickie H. Hill and husband, Edward, of Trinity, N.C.; two sons, Jerry Hylton and wife, Jean, of Scottsburg and Gene Hylton and wife, Nancy, of Mansfield, Ohio; one brother, Coy Via and wife, Lauren, of Fieldale; one sister, Vera Joyce of Collinsville; six grandchildren, Ryan, Shawn, Joshua and Terry Hylton and Lauren and Sarah Hill; three great-grandchildren, Seth, Jagger and Adam Hylton. Mrs. Hylton was also preceded in death by two brothers, Buren and Vernon Via; and three sisters, Ocie McAlexander, Elsie Janney and Myrtle Tilley.

Funeral services for Mrs. Hylton were held September 27 at 2 p.m. at Roselawn Chapel Funeral Home in Martinsville with Pastor George Gorman officiating. Burial followed in Roselawn Burial Park.

Michael T. Powell
Funeral services for Michael T. Powell will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at New Zion Baptist Church with interment in the church cemetery.

The Rev. Willie N. Yancey will conduct the service.

Mr. Powell, 53, of Nunnley Bridge Road, Vernon Hill, died Thursday, September 25, 2003, at Halifax Regional Hospital.

He was born September 10, 1949 in Halifax County, a son of the late Annie Coles Powell and Earl. C. Powell, and was married to Julia Glass Powell.

Mr. Powell was a member of New Zion Baptist Church, a member of the Usher Board, Hospitality Auxiliary and the Male Chorus.

He was employed by J.P. Stephens for 23 years.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Michael T. Powell Jr. and Wakenia of South Boston and Luther V. Powell of Vernon Hill, two daughters, Shonda Easley of Alton and Tammi Powell of South Boston, and his father, Earl C. Powell, and stepmother Inez Powell, both of Nathalie.

Other survivors include three brothers, Collidge Powell and Vanessa, Willard Powell and Tracy Powell and Veronica, all of Nathalie, three sisters, Marion Brame and Andrew of Forestville, Maryland, Debra Walton and William of South Boston, and Gloria Powell of Nathalie, eight grandchildren, his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Luther and Adell Glass, three sisters-in-laws, three uncles and three aunts.

William Whitfield Conner

William Whitfield 'Jack' Conner, 81, of 5099 Old Cluster Springs Road, South Boston died September 29, 2003 at his home.

Mr. Conner was born in Halifax County on September 19, 1922, the son of the late Lucas Lee Conner and the late Callie McCormick Conner and was married to Sallie Frances Morris Conner who survives.

He was a member of Black Walnut Baptist Church, was a Army Veteran and a retired employee of Daniel Construction Company.

A funeral service for Mr. Conner will be held today, October 1 at 2 p.m. at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Rudolph Jacobs officiating. Burial will follow in Black Walnut Baptist Church Cemetery.

Other than his wife, survivors include two daughters, Jane C. Shephard of Turbeville and Marie C. Trimble of South Boston; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Mr. Conner was also preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.

Louise Payne Mize

Louise 'Lou' Payne Mize of Mauldin, S.C., formerly of South Boston, died September 28, 2003 at National Health Care in Mauldin.

Born on September 18, 1926, Mrs. Mize was the daughter of the late John Holland Payne and Snowie Holley Payne in Dry Fork. She was married to the late Claude A. Mize.

Mrs. Mize was a member of Halifax Presbyterian Church where she had once served as a deacon.

Survivors include one daughter, Debbie and son-in-law, James H. Vanhoy Jr., of Mauldin; one son, John B. 'Johnnie' Mize; grandchildren and great-grandchildren of Danville; two sisters, Florence P. King and husband, Ronnie, of Danville and Patsy P. Walker of Danville; a nephew, Ronnie Walker and his wife, Peggy, of Greensboro, N.C.; also, an extended family from South Boston, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Arthur, Gina Walker and Coral Elder.

Funeral services for Mrs. Mize will be held October 2 at 11 a.m. at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Terry Blevins officiating. Burial will follow at Halifax Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends this evening, October 1, from 7:00 until 8:30.

Page Eugene Sowell

Page Eugene Sowell, 81, of Brookneal, died September 29, 2003 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Carolyn Lacks Sowell.

Mr. Sowell was born in Campbell County on January 31, 1922, the son of the late Sandy Martin Sowell and Josie Kate Worsham Sowell. He was a member of Brookneal United Methodist Church, Brookneal Odd Fellows Lodge, Sugar Hill Hunt Club, and Brookneal Sportsmen's Club. Mr. Sowell was a retired employee of Campbell County Sheriff's Department with 19 years of service and former Sheriff.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Joan S. Gillispie and husband, Richard, of Nathalie, Joyce S. Poe and husband, Kenneth Wayne, of Altavista; five grandchildren, Rhonda Austin and husband, Eddie, Steven Crabtree and wife, Kelly, all of Brookneal, Barry T. Davis of Nathalie, Angela Moon and husband, Ronald, and Kevin Poe, all of Altavista; two great-grandchildren, Ronald Owen Moon III and Kaylena Page Crabtree; two brothers, Walter Sowell of Brookneal and Ed Sowell and wife, Janice, of Gladys; one sister, Emma S. Monroe and husband, W.D., of Brookneal.
Mr. Sowell was preceded in death by a sister, Dolly Dunnigan; three brothers, Irvin, Aubrey and Kenneth Sowell, and two half-brothers, Martin and Wingfield Sowell.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today, October 1 at Henderson Funeral Home Chapel in Brookneal by the Rev. Allen Murphy. Burial will follow in Wickliffe Cemetery.

Lila Mae Powell Trent

Lila Mae Powell Trent, 87, of South Boston died September 26, 2003 at The Woodview.

Mrs. Trent was born in Halifax County on May 13, 1916, the daughter of Charlie P. Powell and Ethel Barksdale Powell and was married to Herman Watkins Trent. She was a member of Second Baptist Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Elizabeth T. Cole of South Boston; two sons, Radford Trent and Hal Trent, both of South Boston; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by one son, Curtis Trent.

Funeral services for Mrs. Trent were held September 28 at 2 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jim Smith officiating. Burial followed in Halifax Memorial Gardens.
