Grady Franklin Vaughan, 90, of Clarksville, widower of Reba Rollison Vaughan, died September 28, 2003.
He was a retired employee of J.P. Stevens.
Survivors of Mr. Vaughan include one daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Bud Didyoung of Holden Beach, N.C.; one son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Pat Vaughan of Clarksville; daughter/granddaughter, Deborah Roberts of Richmond; one sister, Virginia Hess of Abbeville, S.C.; three other grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Vaughan was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

Johnnie Oscar Cole
Johnnie Oscar Cole, 75, of New York, formerly of South Boston, died Sept. 28, 2003 in New York.
Mr. Cole was born in South Boston on September 25, 1928, the son of the late George W. Cole and Lou Fannie Bowman Cole and was married to Eleanor Woods Cole. He was a member of Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church in Jamaica, N.Y., and was a former member of Berry Hill Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Edward Cole of London, England and Johnny Cole of Marlton, N.J.; one daughter, LaTonya Doctor of Hopewell; two brothers, Frank Cole of South Boston and Arthur Lee Cole of Long Island, N.Y.; seven sisters, Ruby Pannell of Halifax, Bessie Cole, Clarice Hubbard, Gladys Hartridge, Lillie Moore and Dorothy Whitlock, all of South Boston, and Lena Edmonds of Alton; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and three Godchildren.
A funeral service for Mr. Cole will be held October 6 at 1 p.m. at Berry Hill Baptist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery.

Steven Eugene Hooper
Steven Eugene Hooper, 56, of Burlington, N.C. died September 30, 2003 at the Hospice Home.
Mr. Hooper was born in Alamance County, N.C., the son of Buck and Louise Hooper of Burlington and was married to Kit Hooper. He was employed by Glen Raven Mills for 22 years and Unichem for three years, was a member of Union United Church of Christ, Virgilina.
He was a graduate of UNC at Chapel Hill, N.C., and received a Master's Degree at Elon University.
A funeral service for Mr. Hooper will be held at 1:30 p.m. today, October 3 at Union United Church of Christ with the Rev. Dick Graves of Wake Forest, N.C. officiating. Burial will follow in Virgilina Cemetery.
Survivors other than his wife include two daughters, Mrs. Kirke Hooper Sander and husband, David, of Wake Forest, and Molly Campbell Hooper of Charlottesville; one grandson, Steven Nathaniel Sander; his parents; two sisters, Bette H. Stuckey and husband, David, and Elaine H. Sawyer and husband, Richard, all of Fletcher, N.C.

Eva Mary Brandon Jeffreys
Eva Mary Brandon Jeffreys, 76, of Baltimore, Md., formerly of Halifax County, died September 30, 2003.
Mrs. Jeffreys was born in Halifax County on March 23, 1927, the daughter of the late Charlie Edward Brandon and Sarah Jane Brandon and was married to the late John Herman Jeffreys. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Cherry Hill in Baltimore, and was a former member of Greater Brandon Chapel Missionary Baptist Church.
Survivors include three sons, Charles, Ernest McCoy and John Anthony Jeffreys; three brothers, Clifton, Edward and Charlie E. Brandon, all of Alton; eight grandchildren; three daughters-in-law, the Rev. Frances Jeffreys, Eunice Jeffreys and Jean Jeffreys, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Mrs. Jeffreys will be held October 5 at 2 p.m. at Greater Brandon Missionary Baptist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery.

Michael Sanford Richardson
Michael Sanford Richardson, 42, of 1013 Birch Trail, Nathalie died September 30, 2003 in South Boston.
Mr. Richardson was born in South Boston on February 20, 1961, the son of Maxine Anderson Richardson and the late Sanford Garfield Richardson. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include one son, David Allen Richardson of South Boston; one brother, Mark W. Richardson of Clarksville; one sister, Wanda Gayle R. Hancock of South Boston and two grandchildren. Mr. Richardson was preceded in death by one sister, Kathy Dale Richardson.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. today, October 3, 2003 at Henderson Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Rodney Barwick.
Lessie Leona Dunn Fowler
Lessie Leona Dunn Fowler, 92, of Vernon Hill, died October 3, 2003 at her home
Mrs. Fowler was born in Pittsylvania County on December 9, 1911, the daughter of Ernest Pierce Dunn and Carrie Thompson Dunn and was married to William E. Fowler. She was a member of St. Johns Episcopal Church.
Survivors include her husband; one sister, Helen Walton, of Vernon Hill, and one brother, Newman Dunn, of South Boston.
Funeral services for Mrs. Fowler will be held tomorrow, October 7, 2003, at 11 a.m. at St. Johns Episcopal Church with the Rev. David Booher conducting the service. Burial will take place in the church cemetery.

Janie Mayhew Hubbard
Janie Mayhew Hubbard, 90, of 1010 Peaks Trail, died Sunday, October 5, 2003, in Autumn Care of Altavista. Born March 7, 1013 in Halifax County, she was a daughter of the late Daniel Quitman Mayhew and Hattie Brown Mayhew. Her husband, Aubrey Blanks Hubbard, predeceased her.
Mrs. Hubbard was a member of Mulberry Baptist Church, a member of the Republican Grove Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and was a homemaker.
Rebecca Hubbard Dillard, Peggy Hubbard Rogers and Nellie G. Saunders survive her.
Funeral services for Mrs. Hubbard will be held at 2 p.m. October 7, at the Colbert-Moran Chapel in Gretna by Rev. Latta Terry. Burial will follow in Mulberry Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Tuesday one hour prior to the start of the service at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Allie Wilson McGregor
Allie Wilson McGregor, 84, of 5104 Mountain Road, Halifax died October 2, 2003 at The Woodview.
Mr. McGregor was born in Pittsylvania County on March 6, 1919, the son of Billy McGregor and Eva Tanksley McGregor and was married to Lelia Tanksley McGregor. He was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.
Survivors include six daughters, Violet Pleasant of South Boston, Betty Womack of Halifax, Ruth Lloyd of Winston-Salem, N.C., Lois Owens and Sandra Bibee, both of Ringgold, and Eunice King of Lynch Station; two sons, Wallace Dean McGregor of South Boston and Harry Wilson McGregor of Halifax; three sisters, Florence Adams and Dalia Redd of Halifax and Annie Davis of Chatham; 19 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services for Mr. McGregor were held October 5 at 2 p.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Cemetery with the Rev. Rudolph Jacobs officiating.
Frank Bowls Anderson Jr.
Frank Bowls Anderson Jr., age 86, of 2081 Langhorne Rd., Lynchburg, died October 3, 2003 at Avante' in Lynchburg.
Mr. Anderson was born August 8, 1917 in Halifax County, son of the late Frank B. Sr. and Mary Ellen Puffinbarger Anderson. He was a retired barber and was a member of the Barber's Union and Horizons Community Church in Stafford. He was married to the late Louise Newcomb Anderson.
His survivors include a daughter: Joan A. Vial of Lynchburg; brother: Hunter Anderson of Danville; grandson: G. Bryce Vial of Asheville, N.C. and granddaughter: Victoria Vial of Lynchburg.
Visitation will be held Friday, October 10 from 7-8:30 p.m. at Brooks Funeral Home.

Marguerite Watkins Daniel, age 88, of 1219 Seventh St., Virgilina, died October 7, 2003 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Miss Daniel was born in Halifax County on May 13, 1915, daughter of the late William Stonewall Daniel and Mollie Levister Daniel. She was a retired teacher from Virgilina Elementary School and a member of Union United Church of Christ. She was a former member of Virgilina Woman's Club, Virgilina PTA, VEA and Halifax Co. Education Association.
She is survived by a brother: Edwin L. Daniel of Virgilina and six nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three brothers: William M., Richard L. and John V. Daniel and two sisters: Jane D. Mackenzie and Frances D. Norwood.
Visitation will be held tonight, October 8 from 7-8:30 p.m. and at other times at the home.
A funeral service will be held Thursday, October 9 at 2 p.m. at Union united Church of Christ. Burial will be held in the Virgilina Cemetery.
Howard ‘Mack’ Elliott
Howard 'Mack' Elliott, 55, of Buffalo Junction died October 5, 2003 at his home.
Mr. Elliott was a graduate of Bluestone High School, a graduate of Richmond Technical Center. He graduated Cum Laude in Industrial Electricity and Summa Cum Laude in Blueprint Reading from Wytheville Community College. He was a veteran of the Vietnam conflict, was an employee of Pallet One and prior to that worked at Russell Stover.
Funeral services for Mr. Elliott were held October 7 at 2 p.m. at Buffalo baptist Tabernacle with burial in the church cemetery.

Stover Singleton James Sr.
Stover Singleton James Sr., age 88, of 1182 E. Hyco Rd., South Boston, died October 6, 2003 at his home.
Mr. James was born January 28, 1915 in Halifax County, son of the late Charles Aaron James and Josephine Noel Stevens James. He was a retired owner of Riverdale Exxon and served in the Army. He was a member of Ash Avenue Baptist Church, Woodmen of the World Lodge 106 and American Legion Post 8.
His survivors include his wife: May Wade Oliver James of South Boston; two sons: John Banks James of Alton and Stover S. James Jr. of Colorado Springs, Colo.; daughter: Wendy J. Woltz of Cary, N.C.; sister: Margaret J. Bennett of South Boston; granddaughter: Jessica Hope Woltz and grandson: Zachary Benjamin Woltz.

Mildred McDowell Satterfield, 79, of 1076 Cowford Road, Halifax died October 7, 2003 at Duke University Medical Center.
Mrs. Satterfield was born in Pittsylvania County on February 12, 1924, the daughter of the late Willard L. McDowell and Pearl Henry McDowell and was married to Raymond Bruce Satterfield. She was a member of Scottsburg United Methodist Church, WOW #127; and Halifax Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary.
Survivors of Mrs. Satterfield include two daughters, Brenda S. Burgess Wright of Winter Haven, Fla., and Carolyn S. Talley of Oxford, N.C.; one son, Richard Wayne Satterfield of Winter Haven; five brothers, Wallace McDowell of Charlottesville, Leroy McDowell of Niceville, Fla., Willie Norman McDowell of Pinellas Park, Fla., Ray D. McDowell of Atlanta, Ga. and Warren McDowell of Ringgold; four grandchildren, Lindy Satterfield and Adrienne Burgess, both of Halifax, Nicole and Jason Talley, both of Oxford; one great-grandchild, Miranda Satterfield of Halifax; and one step great-grandchild, Robert McDonald Jr., of Halifax.

Ronald Allen Satterfield, 59, of 1061 Bass Trail, South Boston died October 5, 2003 at his home.
He was born in South Boston on April 11, 1944, the son of the late Herbert Allen Satterfield and Boneze Wall Satterfield Walton, and was married to Barbara Louise Lipscomb Satterfield.
Survivors of Mr. Satterfield include his wife; one daughter, Lisa S. Clardy and husband, Roger, of Alton; two grandchildren, Dinetta and Mykala Clardy, both of Alton; two sisters, Barbara Ann Covington of South Boston and Susan Cavanaugh of Walterboro, S.C.; one brother, David Satterfield of Alton; his mother of South Boston; and three devoted friends, Maggie, Douglas and Julia Oliver, all of Alton.
