Willie Lundra Coleman
Willie Lundra Coleman, 62, of South Boston, died Thursday, November 20, 2003, at the Woodview Nursing Home.
Mr. Coleman was born in Halifax County on November 17, 1941, the son of the late Samuel Roosevelt Coleman, Sr., and Mary Edmondson Coleman. He was a member of the St. Luke Apostolic Church.
Mr. Coleman is survived by one brother, Samuel Coleman Jr. of Columbus, Ga., one sister-in-law, Edith Coleman, a devoted cousin, Celia Ford and her husband Donald of South Boston, and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Mr. Coleman will be held Tuesday, November 25, at 1 p.m. at the St. Luke Apostolic Church with Elder Harry W. Betts, Jr., officiating.
Burial will follow in the Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery in Clover
The family will receive friends at the Jeffress Funeral Home Chapel tonight, November 24, from seven to eight p.m. and at other times at the home of Donald Ford, 1409 Llewellyn Avenue, South Boston.
Edward Lee ‘Buck’ Wilborne
Edward Lee ”Buck” Wilborne, 76, of Halifax, died Friday, November 21, 2003, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mr. Wilborne was born in South Boston on May 5, 1927, the son of the late William Wilborne and Viola Hall Wilborne and was married to the late Mary Ford Wilborne.
He was a veteran of the United States Navy and was a retired contractor and antiques dealer.
Mr. Wilborne was a member of the Woodmen of the World and the American Legion Post 8. After his retirement he enjoyed growing and selling his produce locally and as a vendor at the Danville Farmer’s Market.
He is survived by one daughter, Loretta Wilborne Bryson Hailey, and her husband, Michael, of Halifax, one sister, Inez Michaels of South Boston, two grandsons, Jonathan Edward Bryson of Orlando, Fla., and Patrick R. Bryson of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and one granddaughter, Carrie E. Bryson of Halifax.
Mr. Wilborne was preceded in death by one son-in-law, Doyle W. Bryson, one sister, Ethel Neal, and two brothers, Walter Wilborne and Earl Wilborne.
Graveside services were held for Mr. Wilborne yesterday, November 23, at Halifax Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Melvin Bradshaw officiating.

Clarence William Barley
Clarence William 'Pete' Barley died November 24, 2003 at the St. Barnabas Hospital in Bronx, N.Y.
Mr. Barley was born on February 29, 1936, in Halifax County the son of Mitchell Barley and Norva Tucker Barley.
Survivors include three brothers, Pearlie E. Barley and wife, Nellie, of South Boston, Arbie L. Barley and wife, Frances, of Linden, N.J. and James A. Barley and wife, Angela, of Dumfries; five sisters, Geneva Brown and husband, Beaufort, of Bronx, Carol Turner and husband, Cordie, of Teaneck, N.J., Barbara Barley of Norfolk, and Marjorie and Clara Barley, both of Woodbridge; and a special friend, Beatrice Dunbar.
Mr. Barley was preceded in death by two brothers, David and Wilson Barley.
Services will be held November 29 at Dunn and Sons Funeral Home in Halifax at 11 a.m. with burial in the family cemetery.
Lennie Coleman Fisher Sr.
Lennie Coleman 'Pete' Fisher Sr., 84, of 1093 Clinton Road, Nathalie died November 25, 2003 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mr. Fisher was born in Halifax County on March 8, 1919, the son of Thornton Fisher and Minnie Crews Fisher and was married to Helen Lewis Fisher.
He was a member of First Baptist Church Republican Grove, a charter member of the North Halifax Volunteer Fire Department, was a retired Halifax County Deputy Sheriff, farmer and tobacconist.
Mr. Fisher is survived by two sons, L.C. Fisher and Sherman Fisher, both of Nathalie; one daughter, Patricia F. Thomas of Halifax; three brothers, Watkins Fisher of Lynchburg, Barkley Fisher of Nathalie and Carl D. Fisher of Alexandria; two sisters, Mildred F. Roller of Mt. Laurel and Edna F. Guthrie of Halifax; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for Mr. Fisher will be held November 28 at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church Republican Grove with the Rev. Shelton Miles and the Rev. Dr. Melvin Bradshaw officiating. Burial will take place in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Powell Funeral Home tomorrow evening, November 27 from 7:00 until 8:30, and other times at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Sherman Fisher, 4027 Leda-Grove Road.

Virgina Puryear Cole
Virgina Puryear Cole, 80, of East Hyco Road died Thursday, November 27, 2003, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
She was born in Halifax County on January 15, 1923, the daughter of the late W. L. Puryear and Myrtle Whitt Puryear and was married to the late Grover Cleveland Cole.
She was a retired department manager of Roses and was a member of Black Walnut Baptist Church.
She is survived by one son, Jerry Cole of South Boston, two sisters, Ann Bruce of Virginia Beach and June Young of Virgilina, and one brother, J. B. Puryear of Cluster Springs.
Mrs. Cole was preceded in death by one son, Larry Dean Cole, four brothers, Earl Puryear, Clarence Puryear, Fred Puryear and Robert Puryear and two sisters, Eva Long and Louise Caprio.
Funeral services for Mrs. Cole were held Saturday, November 29, at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dave Cline officiating.
Mrs. Cole was buried
in Halifax Memorial Gardens.
Ruth Williamson Dodson
Ruth Williamson Dodson, 69, of Cowboy Lane, Nathalie, died Saturday, November 29, 2003, at her home.
She was the wife of William Edward Dodson.
Ruth Williamson Dodson was born in Campbell County on March 4, 1934, a daughter of the late Robert J. Williamson and Hallie Hudson Williamson.
She was a member of Wesleyan Memorial Methodist Church.
In addition to her husband, Ruth Williamson Dodson is survived by two daughters, Diane D. Saunders and husband, David of Halifax, and Debbie D. Lloyd and husband Ricky of Nathalie; one brother, Eldridge Williamson of Altavista; two sisters, Evelyn Worsham of Hurt and Doris Cox of Lynch Station; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted today, December 1, at 11 a.m., at the First Baptist Church of Millstone, with the Rev. Robert Watts officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Dodson’s daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Ricky Lloyd, 1199 Cody Road, Nathalie.

Leola Easley Graves
Leola Easley Graves, 84, of Easley Lane, died Saturday, November 29, 2003, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
She was born in Thrift, N.C., on May 2, 1919, the daughter of the late Rev. Thomas Henry Easley and Rosa J. Coleman Easley and was married to the late Alonzo Cleveland Graves.
She was a member of the St. Luke C.M.E. Church.
Mrs. Graves is survived by two daughters, Sharon Graves of Halifax and Karen G. McLellan of Stanford, Conn., seven sons, Rev. L.T. Graves of Rego Park, N.Y., Forest L. Graves of Seattle, Wash., James Gregory Graves of Stanford, Conn., Don B. Graves of Halifax, Dean B. Graves of Suitland, Md., Bishop Alan B. Graves of Halifax and Napoleon G. Graves of Woodbridge, 17 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Mrs. Graves was preceded in death by one son, Alonzo Dwight Graves.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 3, at 11 a.m. at the Main Street United Methodist Church, North Main Street, South Boston, with the Rev. Lawrence T. Graves officiating and Dr. Benjamin J. Whipper, Jr., providing the eulogy.
Burial will follow in the Halifax Memorial Gardens.
After 11 a.m. Tuesday, the remains will lie-in-state at the Crawford house, 721 North Main Street, Halifax, where the family will be receiving friends from 7 until 8 p.m.

Albert Louis High
Albert Louis High, 76, of 5008 James D. Hagood Hwy., Scottsburg died November 27, 2003 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mr. High was born in Halifax County on December 31, 1926, the son of Daniel Louis High and Georgia Anna Allen High and was married to Georgia Ann Reeves High. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church where he was an Honorary Deacon and former Sunday school teacher. He also was a WWII US Army Veteran.
Survivors include his wife; one sister, Betty Jean High Brewer of Scottsburg. Mr. High was preceded in death by one brother, Willie High.
Funeral services were held November 29 at 2 p.m. at Bethel Baptist Church with the Revs. Anthony Reeves and H.V. Conner officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Frances Oliver Lacks
Frances Oliver Lacks, 82, of Randolph died Wednesday, November 26, 2003, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mrs. Lacks was born in California on December 8, 1920, the daughter of the late Burton Oliver and Lucille Nbeshakai Oliver and was married to the late Peter Lacks Jr.
Mrs. Oliver is survived by two sons, Gerald L. Lacks and Nathaniel M. Lacks, both of Randolph, one brother, Ambrose Oliver of Albuquerque, N. Mex., two daughters-in-law, one sister-in-law, nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Robert E. Lacks and James D. Lacks.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 2, at 1 p.m. in the Chapel of Jeffress Funeral Home with Brother Phillip Lewis officiating.
Burial will follow in the Greater Solid Rock Full Gospel Church Cemetery.

Willie Bernard ‘Bill’ Melton
Willie Bernard “Bill” Melton Sr., 73, of Roxboro died Sunday, November 30, 2003, at his residence following a brief illness.
Mr. Melton was a native of Person County, N.C., the son of the late David Danton and Minnie Sue Shotwell Melton.
He was a retired Gunners Sergeant of the U.S. Marine Corp., and served during the Korean Conflict and was a member of the Dan River Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Hawkins Melton, two sons, Willie B. “Bernie” Melton Jr. and wife Mary C., of Scottsburg and David D. “Danny” Melton and wife Linda H., of Roxboro, two daughters, Janet M. Gentry and husband Ricky of Roxboro and Sharon M. Magee and husband Brent of Lebanon, Ind., one stepson, Donald Fletcher of Hurdle Mills, N.C., two stepdaughters, Janis F. Buchanon and husband Ricky of South Boston and Wanda Fletcher-Womack and husband Billy of Vernon Hill, one brother, James Melton of Creedmoor, N.C., four sisters, Margret M. Clayton of Roxboro, Helen M. Sherry and Nell Melton, both of Bunter, N.C., and Nancy Alexander of Winston Salem, N.C., six grandchildren, one great-grandchild, two step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.
Mr. Melton was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Reeves Melton, and one grandson, PFC Christopher P. Thompson.
Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, December 2, at 2 p.m. at the Strickland Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Tommy Robertson officiating.
Interment with military rites will follow in the Dan River Baptist Church Cemetery.

Charlie Hoover Vaughan
Charlie Hoover Vaughan, 74, of 1192 Murphy Grove Road, Halifax died November 28, 2003 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mr. Vaughan was born in Halifax on March 4, 1929, the son of Robert Junior Vaughan and Susie Moore Vaughan and was married to Virginia Moore Vaughan. He was a member of McKendree United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Nancy Matthews and husband, Harry, of Bullock, N.C., Betty Anderson and husband, Ricky, of Nathalie, and Tammie Loftis and husband, Donnie, of Halifax; three sons, Larry Vaughan and wife, Patricia, Wayne Vaughan, and Sammy Vaughan and friend, Betty Ann, all of Halifax; five granddaughters; four grandsons; and three brothers, Cecil Vaughan of South Boston, Elmer Vaughan and Bobby Vaughan, both of Halifax.
Mr. Vaughan was preceded in death by one sister, Doris V. Garber; and three brothers, Shirley Vaughan, James T. Vaughan and Junior Vaughan.
A funeral service was held November 30 at 2 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Bob Watts and Jack Gowen officiating. Burial followed in McKendree United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Stacy Todd Cook
Stacy Todd Cook, 31, of Saluda died November 30, 2003 in Yorktown.
Mr. Cook was born in Halifax County on November 12, 1972, the son of Archie Edward Cook of Benson, N.C. and Ruth Marie Lowery Bowen of Clarksville.
He was a auto mechanic and carpenter with Before & After Home Improvement.
Survivors of Mr. Cook include his parents; and one brother, Donnie Lee Cook and wife, Lucinda, of Saluda.
The family will receive friends at the home of his brother in Saluda Thursday evening from 6:00 until 8:00, and Friday evening from 6:00 until 8:00, at Brooks Funeral Home in South Boston.
Funeral services for Mr. Cook will be held Saturday, December 6, at 11 a.m. at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow in Black Walnut Baptist Church Cemetery.
