Charlie Harrison Self
Charlie Harrison Self, 88, of Roxboro, N.C. died December 5, 2003 at Roxboro Nursing Center.
Mr. Self was born in Chase City the son of Garfield and Sarah Ellen Hoyle Self. He was retired from the City of Roxboro and was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Julia Self; one son, C.G. Self and wife, Marion, of Roxboro; four grandchildren, Cathy Riggs, Greg Self, Judy Bledsoe and Michael Jones; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. December 7 at Brooks & White Chapel in Roxboro by the Rev. Ross Thompson. Burial took place in Burchwood Cemetery.

William Lowell Strickland
South Boston businessman and civic leader William Lowell Strickland, 82, died Sunday, Dec. 7, 2003 at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Mr. Strickland co-founded Electric Service Co. with the late Derward Collier in 1940.
The company remains in the family today with Mr. Strickland's son-in-law, Tom Raab, the owner/operator.
Mr. Strickland was a member of First Baptist Church, and is remembered as very active with the Downtown Friendship Mission.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II, was a founding member of the South Boston-Halifax County Historical Museum and was a member of the South Boston Planning Commission.
Mr. Strickland was born in South Boston on April 5, 1921, the son of Edwin Jesse Strickland and Martha Ella Green Strickland and was married to Dorothy Raine Shotwell Strickland.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Anne Harvey Raab and husband, Tom, of South Boston, and Betty Fleetwood Hoke and husband, Stephen, of Gurnee, Ill.; one sister, Frances S. Allison of Port Orange, Fla.; five grandchildren, Scott Raab of South Boston, Rebecca Raab of Wilmington, N.C., Lesley Hoke of Auburn, Ala., Catherine Hoke and Elisabeth Hoke, both of Gurnee.
Mr. Strickland was preceded in death by his wife; one brother, Cecil Strickland; and four sisters, Melissa Elva Strickland, Jessie Green Strickland, Hazel Edith Strickland and Margarette Elise Strickland.
A graveside service for Mr. Strickland will be held Friday, December 12, in Oak Ridge Cemetery at 2 p.m. The Rev. Dr. Russell Lee, the Rev. Dr. Tim Cannon, Jack Brown and Minnie Tingen will officiate.
The family will receive friends at the home, 837 North Main Street, South Boston.

John Faulkner Crenshaw Jr.
John Faulkner Crenshaw Jr., 63, of 913 Crenshaw Lane, South Boston died December 8, 2003 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mr. Crenshaw was born in Halifax County on August 12, 1940, the son of John F. Crenshaw Sr. and Pearl Epps Crenshaw, and was married to Susan Crenshaw.
Survivors include his wife; his mother of South Boston; three sons, Rickey Lee Crenshaw of South Boston, John F. Crenshaw III of Halifax and Kenneth Wayne Crenshaw of Newport News; one granddaughter, Kimber Leigh Crenshaw of Halifax; one brother, Ronald Lee Crenshaw; and two sisters, Jacqueline Austin of Greensboro, N.C. and Judy Foster of Danville.
A graveside service for Mr. Crenshaw will be held today, December 10 in Pleasant Grove Christian Church Cemetery at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Isaac Mooneyham officiating.
Kathleen Tilley Kendrick
Kathleen Tilley Kendrick, 87, of Ruffin, N.C. died December 7, 2003 at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today, December 10 at Shiloh Primitive Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Kendrick was born in Virginia to the late George W. and Daisy Hutcherson Tilley. She was a member of Shiloh Primitive Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Loraine Kendrick of the home, and Faye Beck and husband, Marvin, of South Boston; four sons, Harvey Kendrick and wife, Margaret, of Ruffin, Raymond Kendrick and wife, Jeanette, of Graham, N.C., Harold Kendrick and wife, Lorraine, of Reidsville, N.C., and George Kendrick and wife, Mildred, of Greensboro, N.C.; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Virginia Ore of Madison, N.C.
Mrs. Kendrick was preceded in death by one son, Charlie W. Kendrick; five sisters, Daisy Southard, Bessie Johnson, Nealy Griffin, Nellie Stutz and Margaret Dykes; and four brothers, George Robert Tilley, David Edward Tilley, James Lee Tilley and William Tilley.

Sarah Katherine Harris Lamb
Sarah Katherine Harris Lamb, 88, of the 4000 block of Dock Landing Road, Chesapeake died November 22, 2003 in a Portsmouth hospital.
Mrs. Lamb was born on February 2, 1915, in Morehead City, N.C. to the late Nora Styron Harris and the Rev. Edwin R. Harris. She grew up in the Virgilina/Aarons Creek area of Virginia and later attended Wingate College where she served as class agent for the Class of 1936. She also attended Old Dominion University and was a third grade teacher in the Norfolk County and Portsmouth public school systems.
As a descendent of the settlers on Portsmouth Island, N.C., she enjoyed the Outer Banks and during her retirement years, resided mostly in Nags Head, where she was an active member of the Nags Head Baptist Church and the Outer Banks Senior Chorus at the Baum Center.
Mrs. Lamb was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel H. Lamb. She is survived by her daughter, Martha Lamb Hoban of St. Paul, Minn.; a son, Samuel H. Lamb II and his wife, Astrid Heinrich-Lamb, of Virginia Beach; five grandchildren, Andrea Krage Minear and her husband, Mike, Michael Krage and his wife, Liz, Kathleen Krage Rehberg, Sean Hoban Clark and her husband, Will, and Oliver Sebastian Lamb; her great-grandchildren, Matthew Minear, Jason Krage, Amanda Krage, Liam Clark, Clint Minear, Nicole Minear White and her husband, Tommy, and their daughter Isabella Ann White.
A memorial service, followed by a reception, was held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 6, at Nags Head Baptist Church. Pastor Rick Lawrenson officiated.
Nancy Carolyn Perry Noblin
Nancy Carolyn Perry Noblin, 79, of 2085 Mountain Road, Halifax died December 8, 2003 at her home.
Mrs. Noblin was born in Halifax County on August 21, 1924, the daughter of Charles Edward Perry and May Blanks Hastings and was married to Lennis Wilbur Noblin. She was a member of Freedom Worship Center.
Survivors include one daughter, Judith P. Hudson of Halifax; one son, Robert A. Noblin Jr. of Halifax; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one great-great-grandchild.
A graveside service for Mrs. Noblin will be held tomorrow, December 11 in Halifax Memorial Gardens at 2 p.m. with the Revs. Stan Lawton and Ricky Whitlow officiating.
The family will receive friends at Powell Funeral Home this evening, December 10, from 7:00 until 8:30, and other times at the home.

Lou Fannie Crews Younger
Lou Fannie Crews Younger, 92, of 2212 Meadville Road, Halifax died December 6, 2003 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mrs. Younger was born in Halifax County on August 6, 1911, the daughter of Henry Crews and Daisy Logan Crews and was married to Herman Younger. She was a member of Banister Hill CME Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Inez Y. Powell of Halifax; four sons, Thomas Younger, Gordon Younger and Theodore Younger, all of Halifax, and Herman Ray Younger of Oxford, N.C.; 12 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for Mrs. Younger will be held December 12 at 1 p.m. at Banister Hill CME Church with the Rev. Frances Coates officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family is receiving friends at the home.
Willie Fry Brown
Willie Fry Brown, 91, of Richmond, widow of Harris Brown, died December 11, 2003.
Mrs. Brown was born in South Boston, the daughter of John Didlake Fry and Minnie Morton Fry.
Survivors include a sister, Mary Fry Fritch of Virginia Beach; a great-nephew, Catesby Jones of Richmond; two great-nieces, Brooke Jones Hodges of Baltimore, Md. and Elizabeth Jones Hiatt of Richmond.
Mrs. Brown was a graduate of Collegiate Schools, served in the American Red Cross during WWII. She was a member of Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church, the Junior League of Richmond, the Woman's Club.
Graveside services will be held at 11:30 a.m. tomorrow, December 13 in Hollywood Cemetery.

Virginia Whitmore Daniel
Virginia Whitmore Daniel, 92, of Richmond died December 8, 2003 at her home.
Mrs. Daniel was born in Halifax County on February 13, 1911. She was married to William Morris Daniel.
She was a member of Florence Avenue Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school and served as church pianist. Mrs. Daniel graduated from Averett College. Following graduation she taught elementary school in Virgilina.
Survivors include one sister, Robbie W. Boehling of Richmond; and one brother, Robert B. Whitmore of Norfolk.
A funeral service for Mrs. Daniel will be held tomorrow, December 13 at 3 p.m. at Florence Avenue Baptist Church. The Rev. Sean McKenzie will officiate with burial to follow in Virgilina Cemetery.
Beatrice Hargrove Edmonds
Beatrice Hargrove Edmonds, 89, of Bridgeport, Conn., formerly of Halifax County, died December 6, 2003.
Mrs. Edmonds was born in Halifax County on September 1, 1914, the daughter of Elijah Hargrove and Annie Barksdale Hargrove and was married to Henry H. Edmonds. She was a member of Christ Temple Blue Rock Pentecostal Church.
Survivors include six daughters, Dorothy E. Younger, Annie R. Crawley and Beatrice O. Tyner, all of Bridgeport, Hallie M. Sparks of South Boston, Hazel E. Edmonds of Hamden, Conn. and Carolyn L. Jackson of Rochester, N.Y.; 10 sons, Nathaniel Edmonds of Chatham, Henry L. Edmonds, Preston W. Edmonds and Joseph H. Edmonds, all of South Boston, Elijah W. Edmonds, Irving A. Edmonds, Gregory M. Edmonds, Calvin E. Edmonds, Lawrence C. Edmonds and James O. Edmonds, all of Bridgeport; one stepson, Willie L. Womack of South Boston; two sisters, Dorothy M. White of Vernon Hill and Mildred Bruce of Bridgeport; one sister-in-law, Flossie Edmonds of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two grandsons that she raised, Gregory D. Edmonds and Andre L. Edmonds; 95 grandchildren; 225 great-grandchildren; and 55 great-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Edmonds was preceded in death by her husband; one daughter, Mary M. Chappell; two sons, Benjamin H. and Fulton W. Edmonds; three brothers, Alexander, Elijah and Herman Hargrove; and one sister, Alice Rebecca Hargrove.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow, December 13, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Mt. Olive Apostolic Holiness Church with burial in Christ Temple Blue Rock Apostolic Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
Tebe Cleveland 'Rip' Horton Jr.
Tebe Cleveland 'Rip' Horton Jr., 57, of 206 Summit Drive, South Boston died December 10, 2003 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mr. Horton was born in Halifax County on March 30, 1946, the son of Tebe Cleveland Horton Sr. and Bertha Thomas Horton. He was of the Holiness faith and was a truck driver for Fallen Truckling.
A graveside service will be held Sunday, December 14 at 2 p.m. at Halifax Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Harper Davis will officiate.
Survivors of Mr. Horton include one niece, Dale Snead of Halifax; and a special friend, Rachel Rakes of Martinsville. Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Margie Horton Vaughan and Odessa Horton Sink.
The family will receive friends at Brooks Funeral Home Saturday evening between 7:00 and 8:30, and other times at the home.
Mary Coleman Jones
Mary Coleman Jones, 79, of 1094 Mason Chapel Road, Alton died December 5, 2003 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mrs. Jones was born in Halifax County on October 7, 1924, the daughter of Willie Bouldin Coleman and Nannie Jones Coleman and was married to Sylvester Jones. She was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church.
Survivors of Mrs. Jones include her husband; two daughters, Classy Macklin of Beacon, N.Y. and Queen Figgs of Plainfield, N.J.; four sons, Hubert Jones of Plainfield, Ernest Jones, Fred Jones and James Jones, all of Beacon; one sister, Alma Hamlett of Plainfield; two brothers, Willie Yancey of Durham, N.C. and Jessie Cunningham of Goldsboro, N.C.; 22 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for Mrs. Jones will be held tomorrow, December 13 at 11 a.m. at New Bethel Baptist Church with the Rev. Harvey Bigelow officiating.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the church tomorrow morning from 10:30 until 11:00, and other times at the home.
