Chafee, Sen. John H., 77, a GOP moderate who served Rhode Island in the Senate for nearly a quarter-century, died Sunday of heart failure at Bethesda Naval Hospital. A descendant of one of the families that helped settle Rhode Island, Chafee fought in two wars and was a three-term governor before winning his Senate seat in 1976. (See Obituary, Page A3.)
Foveaux, Jessie Lee, 100, whose plainspoken autobiography, "Any Given Day: The Life and Times of Jessie Lee Brown Foveaux," sparked a bidding war among publishers before it was bought and published in 1997 by New York-based Warner books, died Saturday in Manhattan, Kan.
Hughes, H. Stuart, 83, who ran unsuccessfully against Edward M. Kennedy for the Senate in 1962, died in San Diego Thursday.
Quinn, Robert, 72, the longtime director of NBC's "Tonight" show when Johnny Carson was host, died of cancer Thursday in Malibu, Calif.
Soprani, Luciano, 53, an Italian fashion designer, died of cancer Saturday in Milan, Italy.
Tucker, Albert, 84, a groundbreaking painter who was the first Australian artist to have work purchased by New York's Museum of Modern Art, died of heart disease Saturday in Melbourne, Australia.
Willis, Bobby, 57, husband and manager of pop star Cilla Black, died Saturday in London. He had been diagnosed with cancer and was being treated for pneumonia. Black's hits include "Anyone Who Had a Heart" and "You're My World," and she has been hostess of the television show "Blind Date."
