James Thomas Simpkins
SIMPKINS, JAMES THOMAS, 65 of Pearisburg, VA passed away Wednesday, May 2, 2007. Mr. Simpkins was born on February 2, 1942 in Snowville, VA and was a son of the late Waddie Thomas Simpkins and Lucille Moore Simpkins. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Simpkins. Mr. Simpkins was an U.S. Army and Air Force Veteran and was a retired employee of Alliant Tech Systems, (Radford Arsenal). He is survived by his wife Phyllis Tabor Simpkins of Pearisburg, one step daughter, Linda A. and Husband Bryan French of Peterstown, WV, one brother, Roger Simpkins of Snowville, two sisters, Wanda Simpkins of Blacksburg, Carolyn and husband Duane Vickerman of Denver, Co, one uncle, Don East of Pearisburg, one step granddaughter, Schallyne Stone, one step great grandson, Nathan Robertson, 4 nieces, Connie Viar, Kim Simpkins, Susan Viars, Christine Crouch and two nephews, Dean Simpkins and Bobby Boothe. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions are requested to be made to a Giles County Relay for Life team of your choice.
Rev. George Rowland Peters
PETERS, THE REV. GEORGE ROWLAND, Sr. of Pearisburg, passed away Saturday morning May 5, 2007, at his home in Pearisburg, VA following a brief illness. Mr. Peters was born on September 26, 1926 in Appalachia, VA and was a son of the late Dr. William Birdwell (W.B.) Peters and Georgia Harmon Peters. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Carl H. Peters, Sr. Herbert Peters, William Peters and one nephew, Carl H. Peters, Jr. Mr. Peters attended V.P.I. and graduated from Emory & Henry and Seminary of the University of the South in Sewanee, TN. Mr. Peters serviced churches in Galax, VA, Monroe, NC, Shreveport and Hammond, LA. Mr. Peters took early retirement for health reasons. He was also past executive director of the United Way of Giles County, taught chess to Giles County School students for many years and was a member of the Pearisburg Kiwanis Club. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Morris Peters of Pearisburg, one daughter, Susan P. & husband Shawn Croy of Eggleston, VA, two sons, George R. & Anita Peters, Jr. of Peterstown, WV, Stephen Peters of Narrows, four grandchildren, Ben, Mitchell and Karlie Peters and Logan Croy. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, May 7, 2007 at 1:00 pm at the Christ Episcopal Church in Pearisburg with the Rev. Bob Copenhaver assisted by the Rev. Caroline Kramer officiating with interment following in the Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends at the Givens Funeral Home in Pearisburg, Sunday evening from 6 – 8pm. Elizabeth Casey Turner
PEARISBURG, VA – Elizabeth Casey Turner, died April 12, 2007, in Muncie, IN. Born in Enoree, Spartanburg County, SC, Elizabeth lived most of her adult life in Pearisburg. Before marrying, she was employed at Celenese in Narrows when going to work meant a ferry ride across the New River. In 1940 she married
Kenneth Vernon Turner and the couple settled in Pearisburg where they raised their two children. Elizabeth was a talented seamstress and homemaker, was active for years in the Home Demonstration Club as well as being active in her church. In 2005, she moved to Westminster Village, Muncie, IN. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth, in 1995 and was the last of 5 children of Sallie Griffin Casey and James Andrew Casey. Surviving are her son, Kenneth V. Turner, Jr. and wife Cheryl of Anderson, IN; daughter, Alinda T. Uzel of King William, VA; and four grandchildren, Jayne Dean of Bridgewater, VA ; Stephen Turner of Anderson, IN ; Robert Wallace of Harrisonburg, VA ; and Sara Turner of Muncie, IN ; and 7 great-grandchildren. The family will welcome visitors at Givens Funeral Home in Pearisburg between 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. on Monday, April 16; a graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 17, at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Rich Creek.
Joseph Hayes Philpott
PHILPOTT, JOSEPH HAYES, 92 of High Point, N.C., formerly of Pearisburg, VA passed away April 24, 2007 in the Hospice Home at High Point. Mr. Philpott was born on August 23, 1914 in Gold Bond, VA and was a son of the late Benjamin Franklin Philpott and Maude Lena Britts Philpott. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by 4 brothers and 2 sisters. Mr. Philpott was a retired supervisor at the Celanese Plant in Narrows, VA, a longtime member and past Chief of the Pearisburg Volunteer Fire Dept. and was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Pearisburg. Mr. Philpott is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mamie Elmore Philpott of High Point, NC, one daughter and son-in-law, Trish P. and George Cooper of High Point, NC, three sons and two daughters-in-law, Joe and Carolyn Philpott of Martinsville, Dr. James and Jeane Philpott of Chattanooga, TN, Ronald H. Philpott of Pearisburg, four grandchildren, Ben Philpott, Sarah Philpott, Joey Philpott, Jessica Barker and three great grandchildren, Winn, Tate and Patrick. TAYLOR, DORIS GLOVER, 83 of Pearisburg, VA passed away Friday evening, April 27, 2007 at Riverview Nursing Home in Rich Creek, VA. Mrs. Taylor was born on April 21, 1924 in Tazewell Co., VA. Mrs. Taylor was preceded in death by her husband, John D. Taylor and her daughter Sonya E. Morris. She is survived by one daughter, Patti White and fiancée David Deibler of Radford, VA, two sons, James D. & wife Anna Taylor of Kire, VA, Dow N. and wife Pam Taylor of Botetourt, VA, two sisters, Bernice Hankins of Bishop, VA, Gay Whitt of Roanoke, seven grandchildren, Dulcie and husband Robert Conley, Kristen and Lauren White, Jared and Caleb Taylor, Rachael and Ethan Taylor and two great grandchildren, Matthew Tickle and Taylor Conley. NEICE, JERRY EUGENE, 58 of Ripplemead, VA, passed away on Friday, March 23, 2007. He was born on April 16, 1948 in Giles County and was the son of the late Douglas Neice. His mother, Hazel Meadows Neice survives him. He is also survived by his wife, Rosa Neice; three sons, Andy and Chrystal Neice, Gene and Christina Neice, Willie and Dianna Neice; one daughter, Missy Neice Lucas and Paul Lucas, all of Pearisburg, VA; two step-daughters, Angie Anderson of Ripplemead, VA, and Amanda and Kevin Lilly of Pulaski, VA; five brothers Ronnie and Loy Neice, Danny and Scottie Neice of Pearisburg, VA, Ferrell and Carolyn Neice of Roanoke, VA, Randy and Danniele Neice of Tennessee, and David and Tina Neice of Princeton, WV; two sisters Brenda and Tommy Bowles of Pearisburg, VA, and Lisa and Butch Mills of Peterstown, WV; ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild. MARTIN, LUCY ETHEL, 83, of Pearisburg, VA, passed away after a short illness on Sunday, March 25, 2007. She was born on May 12, 1923 in Pearisburg, VA and was the daughter of the late Fred and Mollie Woodyard Thompson. Her husband, Jack Martin, and her brother, Joe Thompson, preceded her in death. She is survived by two sons Jackie and Babette Martin of Pearisburg, VA, and John C. and Marion Thompson of Washington; two brothers, John and Juanita Thompson of Rich Creek, VA, and Fred and Dot Thompson of Salem, VA; two sisters Nancy Harrell of Pearisburg, VA, and Pat Whittaker of West Virginia; six grandchildren and several nephews, nieces and cousins. There will be a graveside service on Tuesday, March 27, 2007 at 2:00pm with the Rev. Gary Poff officiating at the Birchlawn Burial Park. There will be no public visitation. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Pearisburg Fire Department.

BURTON, ROWENA BRUMFIELD, 74 of Pearisburg, VA went to be with the Lord Thursday evening, April 5, 2007. Mrs Burton was born on September 16, 1932 in Giles County and was a daughter of the late Willie and Bertha Mae Hilton Brumfield. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James (Jim) Sibold Burton, a son, Robert Lee (Bobby) Burton. Mrs. Burton is survived by three daughters, Birdie B. & husband Doug Moye of Pearisburg, Anna B. & husband Alvin Holt of Pearisburg, Betty Burton of Pearisburg, one son, Jamie and wife Crystal Burton of Rich Creek, one daughter-in-law, Tonya M.
