Gladys Edna Baker
BAKER, GLADYS EDNA, 88 of Narrows, VA passed away Tuesday night, October 14, 2008 at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley, WV. Mrs. Baker was born on May 30, 1920 in Richwood, WV, and was a daughter of the late Joseph Robert Baker and Nannie Whitt Baker. Besides her parent, she was preceded in death by one brother, Ellis Baker and two sisters, Sadie Baker and Millie Du Pre. Mrs. Baker was a member of the Church of Christ in Pearisburg, VA and was a retired employee of the Celanese Plant with over 40 years of service. She is survived by six sisters, Goldie Gabbert of Frankford, WV, Shirley Culp of Renick, WV, Hazel and husband Rick Crawford of Shady Spring, WV, Betty Jo Baker of Cocoa, Fl, Dreama Baker and husband David Polk of Daniels, WV, Patricia and husband John Medding of Kenova, WV, four brothers, George and wife Aleda Baker of Coppers Cove, TX, Alfred Baker of Shady Spring, WV, Walter and wife Dee Baker of Renick, WV and Arnold Baker of Piney View, WV and 19 nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Friday, October 17, 2008 at 2:00 at the Givens Funeral Chapel in Pearisburg, VA with burial following in the Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends at the Givens Funeral Home Friday from 1 – 2 pm before the service.
Robert DeWayne Bowen
BOWEN, ROBERT DEWAYNE, 73 of Pearisburg, VA. passed away at his home Saturday morning, October 18, 2008. Mr. Bowen was born on July 29, 1935 in Cherokee, OK. He was a son of the late Orval and Nellie Lou Culver Bowen. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers Dennis E. Bowen and William D. Bowen. Mr. Bowen was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church in Pearisburg. He had a great love of his Catholic faith and was actually discerning a call to the priesthood when he met the lovely woman who would be his wife for more than 43 years during which they raised five children. He taught his family how to live and how to love, and his greatest joy in life was his family. He was an avid, or is that “rabid” fan of the Oklahoma Sooner football team. He and his wife were the owners and operators of The Music Shop in Blacksburg for over 30 years. He was also an accomplished classical guitarist and was a member of the Mood Makers Dance Band in the 1970’s and 80’s. He is survived by his wife of more than 43 years Phyllis Marie Loudy Allen Bowen of Pearisburg, two daughters, Iva Jean Allen Van Hemert and husband John of Pearisburg, Joaquita Bowen Martin and husband Bryan of Chugiak, AK, three sons, John A. Allen and wife Nancy of Roanoke, J. Tracy Allen and wife Alice of Pearisburg, Joaquin D. Bowen and wife Leanne of Pulaski, two sisters, Mary Lou Etzel and husband Nat of Canby, OR, Judy Messelink and husband Bert of Nashville, TN, one brother Thomas D. Bowen and wife Marion of Washougal, WA, eight grandchildren, Private Nathan Allen, USMC, Jesse Allen and wife Caryl, Christine Allen, William Allen, Justin and Katrina Van Hemert, Calvin and Katy Martin, one great granddaughter, Alexia Allen, two sisters-in-law, Patricia Bowen of Bel Air, MD and Velda Bowen of Mineral Wells, TX, and a brother-in-law, Ralph Loudy and wife Barbara of Kingsport, TN. A Holy Catholic Funeral Mass will be held at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Pearisburg Wednesday, October 22, 2008 at 12:15 pm, with Father John Prinelli officiating. A private family interment will preceed the Mass. The family will receive friends at the Givens Funeral Home in Pearisburg Tuesday from 6 – 8 pm. Acie Lewis Perdue
PERDUE, ACIE LEWIS, 73 of Glen Lyn, VA., passed away Monday morning, October 20, 2008 at Riverview Nursing Home in Rich Creek, VA. Mr. Perdue was born on January 21, 1935 in Giles County, VA and was a son of the late James Harrison Perdue and Josephine Kidwell Perdue. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Ruth Parker Perdue and 15 brothers and sisters. Mr. Perdue was a member of the Boilermakers union # 45. He is survived by one son, Jubal Dean Perdue and wife Mary of Peterstown, WV, one daughter, Mauricia Perdue Shanks and husband Joe Shanks, Jr. of Pearisburg, one brother, Jesse Perdue of Rich Creek, one sister, Betty Lou Goode of OH, four grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Graveside funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 22, 2008 at 3:00 pm at the Perdue Family cemetery in Glen Lyn, VA with the Rev. Ward Harris officiating.
Viola Bracken Shomo
SHOMO, VIOLA BRACKEN, of Pearisburg, VA. died of natural causes Saturday, October 4, 2008 at Pulaski Health and Rehab. Mrs. Shomo was born on June 28, 1913 in Kanawha County, West Virginia and was the daughter of the late Rev. Robert and Augusta Hemmings Bracken. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Willis D. Shomo, one brother, Charles Bracken, six sisters, Naomi Bracken, Betty Dunn, Anne Maxwell, Marietta Francis, Faye Hutsenpillar and Eloise Kite. Mrs. Shomo was a fifty-year resident of the Fort Branch area of Pearisburg, an active member of the Pearisburg Presbyterian Church and a well-loved and respected friend and neighbor. She is survived by her sons and their families, Ron and Ruth Shomo of Dover, Delaware, Bill and Jan Shomo of Fort Lauderdale, FL, Chuck and Barbara Shomo of Pulaski and one brother, Bob Bracken of Pembroke. Her gentle ways and kind heart will live on in the memories of five grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted October 8, 2008 at 11:00am at the Givens Funeral Chapel in Pearisburg with the Rev. Shirley M. Larson and Rev Hugh Kilgore officiating with burial following in the Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends at Givens Funeral Home from 10 – 11pm Wednesday before the service. Mary Frances Ratcliffe Morris
MORRIS, MARY FRANCES RATCLIFFE, 80 of Pearisburg, VA passed away Sunday evening at Riverview Nursing Home in Rich Creek, VA. Mrs. Morris was born on August 1, 1928 in Pearisburg and was a daughter of the late Joseph and Sadie Gautier Ratcliffe. Beside her parents, she was preceded in death by a baby sister, Margie and son-in-law C. Jefferson Stafford. Mrs. Morris was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Pearisburg. She was also a retired employee of the Celanese Corp. in Narrows with over 30 years of service. She is survived by three daughters, Linda M. and Bob Candelieri of Pearisburg, Barbara M. Stafford of Pearisburg, Rhonda M. and Billy Reynolds of Christiansburg, one sister Kathleen R. and Bill Ballard of Pearisburg, six grandchildren, Chris Mann of Newburn, NC, Bobby Candelieri of Savannah, GA, Lance Reynolds of Christiansburg, Elizabeth Stafford of Baltimore, MD, Lindsay Reynolds of Richmond and Mary Stafford of Roanoke, VA and two nieces, Sandy Peters of Lynchburg and Mary Ann Graham of Blacksburg and a special life long friend, Ann Sanders of Salem. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, October 8, 2008 at 2:00 pm at the First United Methodist Church in Pearisburg with Dr. Brad Scott and Dr. Fred L. Herman Bailey Stephens
STEPHENS, HERMAN BAILEY, 94, of Pearisburg, VA passed away Tuesday, October 7, 2008 at Carilion Giles Memorial Hospital in Pearisburg. Mr. Stephens was born on July 28, 1914 in Honaker, VA and was a son of the late Charles Edward and Edna Johnston Stephens. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Garnett, Raymond and Joseph Stephens, two sisters, Christine McGinnis and Mae Baker. Mr. Stephens was an Army Veteran of WWII, a retired electrician from the Celanese Plant in Narrows and was a lifelong member of the Green Valley United Methodist Church in Eggleston, VA. He is survived by his wife, Alta Skiles Stephens of Pearisburg, four sons, Glenn Stephens and wife Georgie of Wilmington, NC, Gary Stephens, Mark Stephens and wife Angie, and Keith Stephens and wife Michelle, all of Pearisburg, two daughters, Donna Collins of Pearisburg, Lois Stephens and husband Cliff Reynolds of Newport, thirteen grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and one great, great grandchild. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, October 9, 2008 at 2:00 pm at the Givens Funeral Chapel in Pearisburg with the Rev. Ronnie Duncan and Rev. Betty Roberts officiating with burial and military honors given by American Legion Post #68 in Narrows American Legion Post #311 and VFW Post #6000 in Narrows following in the Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. Nadine Clara Woods Perkins
PERKINS, NADINE CLARA WOODS, 81 of Pearisburg, VA passed away Sunday morning, September 7, 2008 at Riverview Nursing Home in Rich Creek, VA. Mrs. Perkins was born on July 27, 1927 in Giles County and was a daughter of the late Walter Woods and Florence Lucas Woods. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon Eugene Perkins and a daughter, Hazel Stephens. Mrs. Perkins is survived by four sons, Gary Perkins of Pearisburg, Phillip Perkins of Dublin, James Perkins of Rich Creek, Darrell Perkins of Pembroke, one daughter, Norma Walters of Pearisburg, fifteen grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. Graveside funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, September 9, 2008 at 11:00am at the Mountain View cemetery on Guinea Mountain in Pearisburg with Rev. Terry Mays officiating. Luther Haynes Butts, Jr.
BUTTS, Jr., LUTHER HAYNES, 81 of Pearisburg, VA departed this world to be with his heavenly father Saturday, September 13, 2008 in Pulaski Community Hospital in Pulaski, VA. Luther was born October 20, 1926 in Eggleston, VA to Luther Haynes Butts, Sr. and Mary Croy Butts. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters, Buford Butts, James Butts, Wilmont Butts, Elsie Buchanan, Nancy Ashworth, Louise Oberlin and Ruby Johnston. Luther graduated from Eggleston High School in 1945. Following high school, he served in the U.S. Army as a military police officer in Austria. Upon his return, he married
his “sweetie-pie”, Estelle, the love of his life. Luther retired from First National Exchange Bank in Pearisburg where he was employed for 30 years. He was an active member of First United Methodist Church for over 55 years, where he was treasurer, secretary of the Sunday school and head usher. He also was a founding member of the Pearisburg Kiwanis Club. Luther never met a stranger and always had a story for anyone who would listen. He loved the outdoors and took pride in his yard and garden. Luther leaves behind a loving wife of nearly 60 years, Estelle Williams Butts, a son, Mark Butts of Pearisburg, a daughter, Teresa Fields and husband Granville of Charlottesville, a granddaughter, Emily Moye and husband Scott, a grandson, Jeremy Fields of Richmond, one great-grandson Colton Moye, numerous brother-in-laws, sister-in-laws, and nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, September 16, 2008 at 2:00pm at the First United Methodist Church in Pearisburg with Rev. Brad Scott and Rev. Dr. Fred Austin officiating with burial and military honors following in the Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. Mrs. Johnston was born on January 28, 1908 in Roderfield, WV and was a daughter of the late John B. and Sarah Lucas Williams. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Shuler Johnston, one brother, Marshall E. Williams and four sisters, Kathren W. Ritchie, Evangeline W. Whitehead, Evelyn W. Lowery and Nell W. Kohut. Mrs. Johnston was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Pearisburg. She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, William M. and Vonda B. Johnston of Hardy, VA, one daughter, Carol J. Goodson of Raleigh, NC, two grandsons, Brian and Jeff Brady both of Raleigh, two granddaughters, Chandra J. Bratton and husband David of The Woodlands, TX, Anissa J. Calhoun and husband Paul of Roanoke, five great grandchildren, Randy, Emily and Julie Bratton of The Woodlands, TX, Tyler and Hanna Jarvis of Raleigh, NC and one brother John Daniel Williams of Pembroke.
