Clara Lucas Dennis
DENNIS, CLARA LUCAS, 87 of Pearisburg passed away Sunday, July 6, 2008 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke, VA. Mrs. Dennis was born in Summers Co., WV, on March 20, 1921 and was a daughter of the late Jacob Chapman Lucas and Rhoda Vest Lucas. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil (Major) Edward Dennis, four sisters, Margaret Davidson, Thelma Lewis, Della Quesenberry, Bertie Wooten, two brothers, Corbett Lucas, Frank Lucas and Lucille Dennis who was her best friend, neighbor and sister-in-law for over 50 years. Mrs. Dennis was a faithful member of the Faith Temple Pentecostal Holiness Church in Pearisburg. She is survived by her daughter, Sherry Dennis Tickle of Pearisburg, two grandchildren, Aaron Matthew Tickle and wife Amanda of Goochland, VA, Jared Dennis Tickle of Pearisburg, three great grandchildren, Jacob Xavier Tickle, Nicole Brooks Tickle and Macie Madison Tickle and one sister, Nellie L. Bennett of Hinton, WV and many special nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, July 10, 2008 at 2:00 pm at the Faith Temple Pentecostal Holiness Church in Pearisburg with the Rev. Roy Burton officiating with burial following in the Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends at the Givens Funeral Home Wednesday evening from 6 – 8 pm. David William Francis Sr.
David William Francis Sr., 89, formerly of Pearisburg, Va., passed away Thursday, July 31, 2008, at Lewis Gale Hospital, in Roanoke, Va. Mr. Francis was born on December 21, 1918, in Swansonville, Va., and was the son of the late James Madison and Worta Thomas Francis. In addition to his parents, Mr. Francis was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Maxine Cumbee Francis; three sisters, Mrs. T.P. (Annie) Smith, of Danville, Va., Mrs. Edward (Julia) Grant, of District Heights, Md., and Mrs. Belle Steele, of Boca Raton, Fla.; and a brother, Joseph Francis, of Swansonsville, Va. Mr. Francis served in the United States Army, Air Force and was a veteran of World War II. He was a long time associate with Givens Funeral Home, a retired salesman, and a member of the First United Methodist Church, in Pearisburg, where he attended the Pop Finley Class. He is survived by a son, David Francis Jr., and wife, Debbie, of Blacksburg, Va.; one sister, Mrs. Wesley (Lucy) Scarce, of Danville, Va.; and a grandchild, Teresa Francis, and husband, Ron Maybaum, of Blacksburg, Va. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, August 2, 2008, at the First United Methodist Church, in Pearisburg, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Brad Scott and Dr. Fred L. Austin officiating with burial following in the Birchlawn Burial Park, in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends at the Givens Funeral Home, in Pearisburg, Friday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church, in Pearisburg, or to the Blacksburg Methodist Church. The family would like to thank the employees at Wheatland Assisted Living and the ICU nurses and staff at Lewis Gale Hospital for their assistance and kindness.
Charles Carson Hodge
HODGE, CHARLES CARSON, 81 of Pearisburg, VA passed away Wednesday, August 27, 2008 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Mr. Hodge was born on August 1, 1927 in Bane, VA, and was a son of the late Charles A. and Mary Carper Hodge. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mildred H. Barton. Mr. Hodge was a WWII Army Veteran, a retired employee of the Celanese Plant in Narrows with 42 years service, a member of Providence United Methodist Church, member of the White Gate Ruritan Club that he dearly loved, and was a member of the RSVP, NRCA and American Legion Post # 311. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Irene Kelly Hodge of Pearisburg, one daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Benny Johnson of Gretna, one son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Izma Hodge of Pearisburg, two brothers, Danny Hodge and Wife Loretta of Pearisburg, Newton Hodge of Greenville, SC, two sisters, Betty Muncy and Husband Jess of Moneta, Rowana H. Kelly of Greenville, SC, one granddaughter, Angela Huff and one great granddaughter, Brooke Huff. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, August 30, 2008 at 11:00 am at the Givens Funeral Chapel in Pearisburg with the Rev. Ted Anders, Rev Eddie Kendall officiating with entombment following in the Birchlawn Abbey in Pearisburg, VA. Garnet Earl Martin
MARTIN, GARNET EARL, 81 of Pearisburg, VA passed away Sunday, June 29, 2008 at Carilion Giles Memorial Hospital in Pearisburg. Mr. Martin was born on July 21, 1926 in Gap Mills, WV and was a son of the late Hampton Martin and Essie Hunter Martin. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Buron and Lloyd Martin and two sisters, Glenna Martin Lucas and Waver Martin. Mr. Martin was a WWII Army Veteran, a retired employee of the Celanese Corp with over 45 years of service and was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Pearisburg for over 58 years. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Nancy McCormick Martin of Pearisburg, one daughter and son-in-law, Diana Martin Clark and husband Dale of Christiansburg, one son and daughter-in-law, Richie and Penny Martin of Pearisburg, five grandchildren, Rev Sarah Martin Slack and husband David, Jennifer Clark Trotter and husband Tommy, Aaron Martin, Brad Clark and Nikki Martin, three brothers and sisters-in-law, Odell and Phyllis Martin, Foster and Mabel Martin, both of Pearisburg, Haven and Doris Martin of Roanoke, special sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law and many nieces and nephews. ALBERT, GEORGE RALPH, 91 of Staffordsville, VA passed away Tuesday evening, July 1, 2008 at Carilion Giles Memorial Hospital in Pearisburg, Va. Mr. Albert was born on August 12, 1916 in Staffordsville, VA and was a son of the late Riley Hoge Albert and Elsie Brooks Meadows Albert. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Blanche Winifred Johnston Albert and one son Barry Wayne Albert. Mr. Albert was a WWII Army Veteran, a member of the Giles Historical Society, the Newburn Historical Society and the American Legion Post #68 in Narrows American Legion Post #311 and VFW Post #6000 in Narrows. He is survived by three daughters and son-in-laws, Doris & Eddie Williams of Dublin, Elsie & Bill Fern of Mechanicsville, VA., Sonya & Boyce Falls of Bullock, NC, one daughter-in-law Dixie Lafon Albert of Pearisburg, six grandchildren, Sheila Meadows, Dreama Shultz, Scarlett Williams, Misti Williams, Jason Falls and Jeremy Falls, two step-grandchildren, Sherry Stafford, Charles Stafford, five great grandchildren and special caregivers, Sarah Eads and Stephanie Hudson. PENNINGTON, LOUISE WILBURN, 81, of Pearisburg, VA. passed away Saturday night, July 5, 2008 at Carilion Giles Memorial Hospital in Pearisburg, VA. Mrs. Pennington was born in Pearisburg on September 18, 1926 and was a daughter of the late Emmett Woodson Wilburn and Edna Journell Wilburn. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Kent Ray Pennington; one son, Kent Wilburn Pennington; two sisters, Mary Evelyn Gilbert, Gladys Ruth Pritchard, two brothers, Clarence Wilburn, Graham Lewis Wilburn and many nieces and nephews. Louise was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Pearisburg for over 50 years and was a retired employee of the Kroger Co. Mrs. Pennington’s ancestors include John Chapman, who received the first land grant in the area and William Wilburn who was one of the first settlers of Giles County. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra P. and Gary W. Johnson of Asheville, NC; Linda P. and Raymond G. Luttner of Brunswick, OH; two grandchildren, P. Andrew Johnson of Annapolis, MD and B. Parker Johnson of Brooklyn, NY; one brother-in-law Merel B. Pennington and wife Frances of Lakeland, FL; one nephew C. Woodson Wilburn and wife Dot of Salem, and niece, Mary Jane Russell of Danville. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, July 10, 2008 at 11:00am at the Givens Funeral Chapel with the Dr. Fred L. Gavin Thomas Fore
Gavin Thomas Fore, beloved infant son of David Thomas Fore and Alma Vandegrift Fore of Pearisburg, VA, was born prematurely at Montgomery Regional Hospital on June 4, 2008, at 4:33 PM and died at 4:50 PM. While heaven welcomes him, his parents, Alma and David; brother, Landon Robert Fore; grandparents, Becky and Dell Sutphin of Pearisburg, Tom and Susan Fore of Dublin; great-grandfather Carroll Thompson of Pulaski, uncles and aunts, Jonathan and Kellie Fore of Draper and Perry and Nikki Vandegrift of Pearisburg; as well as cousins, special Mamaw Peggy and Mike Frye of Wytheville, and other family, who were looking forward to loving him here will miss him greatly. Services delivered by the Reverend David J. Lones will be held at Givens Funeral Home in Pearisburg on Tuesday, June 10, 2008, at 10AM to be immediately followed by a private family time at Birchlawn cemetery, Pearisburg, Virginia.

Mrs. Bradley was born on February 24, 1925 in Kelleysville, WV and was a daughter of the late Ernest W. Davis, Sr., and Anna Mae Dent Davis. Besides her parents, Mrs. Bradley was preceded in death by her husband, Noah Preston Bradley and two brothers, Coye Davis and Ernest W. Davis, Jr. Mrs. Bradley was a retired employee of the Celanese Plant in Narrows. She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Douglas P. and Kathleen Bradley of South Egremont, Mass., two grandchildren, Benjamin and Jessica Bradley and two sisters, Violet Waldron of Clearwater, FL., and Joyce Cooper of Kegley, WV.
