Harold Woodrow Robertson
ROBERTSON, HAROLD WOODROW, 95 of Pearisburg, VA., (Thessalia Community), passed away Saturday, March 22, 2008 at Riverview Nursing Home in Rich Creek, VA. Mr. Robertson was born on April 28, 1912 in Thessalia and was a son of the late Tyler Sutton Robertson and Della R. Robertson. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lura Elizabeth St. Clair Robertson, one son, Harold Douglas Robertson, two brothers and two sisters. Mr. Robertson was a member of the Thessalia Methodist Church, was the postmaster of Thessalia for 26 years and was a R.F.D. carrier out of Pearisburg for 5 years. He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Daniel H. (Danny) and Lawanda Robertson of Pearisburg, VA., one brother, Owen Robertson of Richmond, VA, five grandchildren, Daniel Todd Robertson and wife Dana, Lora Anderson and husband Jerry, Joseph L Perkins and wife Donetta, Steve D. Perkins, Della Jean Millirons, seven great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, March 25, 2008 at 11:00am at the Thessalia United Methodist Church with Charles Henderson and the Rev. Paula Campbell officiating with burial following in the Thessalia cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Givens Funeral Home Monday evening from 6 – 8 pm, please use Woodrum Street entrance. Geraldine (Jerry) Buckland Houchins
HOUCHINS, GERALDINE (JERRY) BUCKLAND, 81 of Pearisburg, VA passed away Thursday, March 27, 2008 at Carilion Giles Memorial Hospital in Pearisburg. Jerry went home to the Lord’s House to join her husband Granville Houchins, her parents, Darrell and Edith Johnson Buckland, her sisters, Flora McKlarney, Sylvia Munsey, Betty Lou Poff, her brother, Darrell Hampton Buckland, Jr. and a nephew Arvel Hampton Thompson. Jerry was born on May 14, 1926 in Giles County, VA. She was the third child out of eight, one boy and seven girls. She was a member of the Ingram Village United Methodist Church and was a retiree of the Celanese Plant in Narrows, VA. She is survived by, 3 sisters, Lois Thompson of Kelleysville, WV, Luella Lafon of Salem, VA, Clara Ruth Miller of Peterstown, VA., a special cousin who was like a sister, Charlotte Faulkner of Peterstown, two brothers-in-law, Lawrence Poff of Roanoke, Roscoe Houchins of Pearisburg, two sisters-in-law, Gladys Lucas and Pauline Riddle of Pearisburg. She is greatly loved and will be forever in the hearts of her many nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 30, 2008 at 2:00pm at the Givens Funeral Chapel in Pearisburg with the Rev. Shahn Wilburn officiating with burial following in the Birchlawn Burial Park. The family will receive friends at the home of Jerry Houchins and at Givens Funeral Home Saturday evening from 6 – 8 pm. The family would like to give a special thanks to the care providers, the Staff at Giles Memorial Hospital and Dr. Walker for their love, time and effort. Louise Laura Dillon
DILLON, LOUISE LAURA, 90 of Stuarts Draft, Va., died Sunday evening, March 30, 2008 at Augusta Medical Center in Fishersville, VA. Born on October 22, 1917, she was the last surviving child of the late Henry Lee and Ida Elizabeth Farmer Dillon. Preceding her in death were brothers and sisters, Raymond Dillon, Robert Dillon, Ernest Dillon, Naomi D. Gordon and Maime D. Echols, as well as nephews Mitchell and Gale Echols, Frankie Lee Gordon, niece Mary G. Coombs and great nephew Gregory Skurupey. Miss Dillon was employed by the Commonwealth of Virginia for 45 years as secretary for the Commonwealth Treasurer and administrative assistant for the Department of Industrial Development. She was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church, Richmond, where she worshipped and served as communion steward, member of the Arlene Rundasell Circle, and assisted in the Centenary Walk-In-Ministry. A resident of Richmond for 65 years, she moved in 2005 to Augusta County to be near her nephew and his wife, Bill and Jean Dillon of Waynesboro. Additional survivors include sister-in-law Mary T. Dillon, Pearisburg, niece Billie Gene Dillon Farmer, Pulaski, Elizabeth G. and Berlin Tuttle, Columbus, MS, Arlene E. and Fred Skurupey, Blacksburg, Mary Cathryn D. and Larry Lyons, Roanoke, nephews, Shirley B. and Ruth Echols, Blacksburg, Robert R. and Laverne Dillon, Roanoke and Larry C. and Judy Dillon, Lancaster, PA. Several great nieces and nephews and several cousins also survive. Visitation will be 11:00am – 12:00 noon, Wednesday, April 2, 2008 at Givens Funeral Home, Pearisburg, VA. A graveside service will be held at 2:00pm in Birchlawn Burial Park, Pearisburg with Dr. Fred L. Austin officiating. On Friday, April 4, 2008, a memorial service will be held in the Chapel of Centenary United Methodist Church, Richmond at 2:30pm with Dr. Jim Boice. Family will receive friends following the service. Yong Ja (Kim) Stafford
STAFFORD, YONG JA (KIM), of Staffordsville, VA passed away Thursday morning at Giles Memorial Hospital in Pearisburg, VA. Mrs. Stafford was born in Korea on September 19, 1938. She was a member of the Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church in Bane for 50 years. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, James E. Stafford of Staffordsville, one daughter, Mary Kim Stafford of Staffordsville, one son, James Stuart Stafford of Bay City, TX, three grandchildren, Joshua Yong Wolfe, Jessica R. Stafford, Victoria Marie Donithan and one great grandchild, Makenzie Paige Wolfe. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, March 16, 2008 at 2:00pm at the Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church in Bane with the Rev. Paula Campbell and Rev Wayne Monroe officiating with burial following in the Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. WALTERS, ODESSA JONES, 91 of Pearisburg, VA. went to be with the Lord on March 22, 2008 at Carilion Giles Memorial Hospital in Pearisburg, VA. Mrs. Walters was born on April 26, 1916 in Ballard, WV. And was a daughter of the late Pleasant (Pleas) Jones and Nannie Brooks Jones. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Buford Elwood Walters, one brother and seven sisters. Mrs. Walters was a member of the Pearisburg Baptist Church. She is survived by many nieces, nephews and special friends. BROWN, DOROTHY LINK, 86 of Pearisburg, VA, (Bane Community), passed away Friday, March 21, 2008 at the Salem Rehab Center in Salem, VA. Mrs. Brown was born on April 20, 1921 in Giles County and was a daughter of the late Harve Link and Lena Caldwell Link. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Parris S. (Jack) Brown, two brothers, Garthan and Roylence Link and one sister, Mildred Link. Mrs. Brown was a member of Riverview Baptist Church in Ripplemead, VA. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Brenda B. & Bill Simpson of Roanoke, one son, James Harvey Brown and companion Tina Bragg of Pearisburg, one sister, Lenora Carr of Pearisburg, four grandchildren, Michael and Wife Janette Brown, Kim and Husband Sherman Shrewsberry, Jamie and Wife Amanda Brown, Allen Brown and one great grandchild, Ethan Brown. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, March 24, 2008 at 11:00am at the Givens Funeral Chapel in Pearisburg with the Rev. Lydia Ruth Stafford Foster
Foster, Lydia Ruth Stafford, age 94, of Pearisburg went home to be with her Lord on Feb. 14, 2008. Daughter of the late James E. Stafford and Hattie Kirk Stafford, Lydia was preceded in death by her husband, Wesley B. Foster, four brothers, Emory, Tuck, Wilson and Roy Stafford, and a beloved great-grandson, Jesse Aaron Coffey. She had a great love for her family and was a devoted and caring mother, grandmother and sister. Her life was a reflection of her love for the Lord, and her sweet spirit was an inspiration to everyone who knew her. A deeply faithful woman, her Bear Springs United Methodist Church family, of which she was a lifetime member, meant much to her. She served as a Sunday school teacher for many years. She leaves to cherish her memory, two daughters, Shirley Foster Stafford of Jeffersonton, Va., and Dottie Foster Perdue and husband Wesley of Pearisburg, Va. Grandchildren Martha Stafford Coffey and husband Jesse, Marvin and wife Saralyn Stafford, Marion Stafford Butterworth and husband Bill, Michael Stafford and friend Sharon Burnette, Russell Perdue and wife Teresa, Rodney Perdue and friend Cindy Vaughn, and Robin Perdue Stafford and husband Rick will sorely miss their loving Maw Maw. Eleven great-grandchildren, Crystal Perdue Boggess and husband Mason; Rachel Coffey; Jessica Stafford; Brandon, Kyle and Carly Stafford; Benjamin, Tyler and Sarah Butterworth; and Ryan and Reggie Perdue mourn her passing. She also leaves behind one great-great grandchild who never failed to bring her joy, Rhea Perdue, daughter of Crystal Perdue Boggess. Her two sisters, Anna Lee Stafford of Montcalm, W.Va., and Viola Stafford Martin of Cashmere, W.Va., plus several nieces and nephews and a host of friends will miss her. Lastly, Lydia leaves behind two very special friends who loved and cared for her, Tracy Steele and Marilyn Mustard. Friends may call at Givens Funeral Home on Saturday, February 16, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be at Bear Springs United Methodist Church on Sunday, February 17, at 1:00 p.m. with the Reverend Kim Goddard and David Olinger officiating. Burial will follow at Birchlawn Burial Park.
Jack Edward Gordon
GORDON, JACK EDWARD, 88 of Pearisburg, VA passed away, Thursday morning, February 21, 2008 at Riverview Nursing Home in Rich Creek, VA. Jack was born on March 4, 1919 and was a son of the late James A. and Virginia Tabor Gordon. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Ola Mae Ratcliffe Gordon, his second wife, Ruby Clement Seldomridge Gordon, three stepdaughters, Shirley, Bonnie and Martha. Jack was a WWII Veteran having served in the Navy in the Pacific and Atlantic theaters from 1940-1947, as a Gunner’s Mate 1st Class and was a recipient of the Purple Heart twice. He served on the USS Chester, which was an escort for the USS Enterprise. After the war, he made his home in Pearisburg. He was employed at the RAAP in Radford for 30 years. He was member of Giles Lodge #106 A.F. & A.M. in Pearisburg for more than 50 years and was a Past Master. He was a life member of the VFW and was a member of the First Christian Church in Pearisburg. He is survived by two stepdaughters, Wanda S. Anderson and Sandra S. Stephens and her husband Rusty all of Wilson, NC. his sister, Iris G. and Husband David H. Farmer, a special niece, Judith G. Blackwell and her husband Clyde, seven other nieces and three nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, February, 23, 2008 at 11:00 am at the Givens Funeral Chapel in Pearisburg with the Rev. Bill Sleasman officiating with burial following in the Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family will receive friend at the Givens Funeral Home Friday from 5 – 7pm with a Masonic memorial at 6:30pm.. A full military service will be conducted at the gravesite by the VFW Post # 6000 in Narrows, and American Legion Post #68 in Narrows and # 311 in Pembroke. The family gratefully appreciates the care our loved one received at Wheatland in Christiansburg, and a special thanks to Peggy C. Kessler who took a special interest in his health and “went the extra mile” for him. Heartfelt thanks also to Riverview Nursing Home for their wonderful and compassionate Care.
