Ruby Clarkson Hylton
Ruby Clarkson Hylton of Pearisburg passed away on Tuesday, May 26, 2009, at the age of 94. She was the daughter of the late Oliver Marshall Clarkson and Pearl Hoke Clarkson and was born in Laurel Branch, Monroe County, W.Va. on July 19, 1914. She was preceded in death by her husband Joseph G Hylton, her twin brother Talbert N. Clarkson, her brother F. Vernon Clarkson, and her sister Orean Clarkson Lipes.
She was educated in Monroe County public schools and attended Marshall College, Huntington W.Va. and Concord College, Athens, W.Va. Before moving to Giles County she taught school in Monroe County, West Virginia and Allegheny and Craig County, Virginia. Her last 20 years as an educator were spent teaching English, Social Studies, and World Geography at Giles High School in Pearisburg.
She was a faithful member of the Pearisburg First United Methodist Church and former president of the United Methodist Women of the Church. She was a member of the Pearisburg Woman’s Club, having served as president for two terms, a charter member of Alpha Delta Kappa, a Teacher Sorority, and a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.
She is survived by two sons and five grandchildren: Dr. Joseph Gordon Hylton and wife Monica of Charlottesville, and Miles Talbert Hylton, an attorney in Roanoke; grandchildren Jessica Hylton of Salem, and Veronica, Elizabeth, Caroline and Joseph Gordon Hylton III of Charlottesville. She is also survived by five nieces and nephews: Jeanne Guthrie and Rosemary Stamper of New Castle, Caroline Carpenter and Schuyler Clarkson of Staunton, and Donna Odom of Richmond.
The funeral will be held at First United Methodist Church in Pearisburg at 2 p.m., on Friday, May 29. The service will be conducted by Rev. Ronnie Mutter and the Rev. Brad Scott. Visitation will be held at Givens Funeral Home in Pearisburg from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday. The family will also meet with friends at the church one hour prior to the services. Burial will follow in Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg.
Nickie Lee Johnson
NICKIE LEE JOHNSON, 55 of Pearisburg passed away Saturday, May 23, 2008 in Pearisburg, VA. Nickie was born on April 27, 1954 in Pearisburg and was a son of the late Samuel Lewis Johnson and Maudie Mae Pyles Johnson. Nickie is survived by his sister, Nedica (Sissy) J. Simpkins and her husband Roger of Eggleston, two half brothers, Earl Gene Johnson and his wife Judy of Ingram Village, and Allen Johnson of Dublin. Graveside funeral services will be conducted Saturday, May 30, 2009 at 11:00 at the Wilburn cemetery, Wilburn Valley Rd., Pearisburg. The family will receive friends one hour before the service from 10 – 11 pm.
Carolyn Eaton Markle
MARKLE, CAROLYN EATON, 63 of Pearisburg, VA went to be with the Lord, Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at Montgomery Regional Hospital in Blacksburg. Mrs. Markle was born on October 24, 1945 in Bluefield, WV and was a daughter of Emory L. Eaton and the late Louise Riggins Eaton. Besides her mother, she was preceded in death by one brother, Greg Eaton. Mrs. Markle was a graduate of Narrows High School, a member of the First United Methodist Church in Pearisburg where she was an active member of the choir, a member of the New River Valley Realtor Association, a member of the Triangle Ruritan Club and a member of the Giles County Chamber of Commerce. She is survived by her husband, Larry Markle of Pearisburg, one daughter and son-in-law, Angela M. and Dennis Williams of Salem, one son and daughter-in-law, Jason and Kelly Markle of Salem, one sister, Brenda and Dale Smith of Rich Creek, one brother, Gary and Marsha Eaton of Rich Creek and three grand children, Logan and Lexi Williams and Jordyn Markle. Funeral services will be conducted, Saturday, June 27, 2009 at 11:00 am at the First United Methodist Church in Pearisburg with Dr. Brad Scott officiating with burial following at 2:00 pm in the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Roanoke, VA. The family will receive friends at the Givens Funeral Home, Friday evening from 6 – 8 pm. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Lymphoma Cancer Research.
Susan Katherine Rehm Kirkpatrick
KIRKPATRICK, SUSAN KATHERINE REHM, 51 of Pearisburg, VA. went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 4, 2009 at Carilion Giles Memorial Hospital in Pearisburg. Mrs. Kirkpatrick was born on April 26, 1958 in Queens, NY and was a daughter of the late Edward Rehm and Christine Suess Rehm. Mrs. Kirkpatrick taught for 20 years at Bayside Lutheran School in Flushing, NY before coming to Virginia and had been teaching third grade at Macy McClaugherty School in Pearisburg for the last six years. She is survived by her husband, Michael N. Kirkpatrick of Pearisburg, one son and daughter-in-law, Brian W. and Emily Kirkpatrick of Tuscaloosa, Ala., and two sisters, Linda and her husband Michael Corsetti of Maspeth, NY and Veronica and Robert Meyer of Whiting, NJ. A Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, August 8, 2009 at 2:00 pm at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Pearisburg with Father John Prinelli officiating with burial following in the Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. Marguerite Grace Compton Ahalt
AHALT, MARGUERITE GRACE COMPTON, 93, formerly of Pearisburg and Vinton, passed away Thursday, August 6, 2009 at Radford Nursing and Rehab. Center in Radford. She was preceded in death by her husband of sixty years, Paul Edwin Ahalt, one son, Paul Frederick Ahalt, one grandson Frederick Whitfield Ahalt, one brother, Paul Compton and one sister, Constance Kaylor. Mrs. Ahalt was a homemaker, a member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Pearisburg and was active in many civic organizations. She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Ahalt Brooks and her husband Richard of Poquoson, her daughter-in-law, Georgia Ahalt of Afton, her granddaughter, Paula Skulina and her husband David of Lynchburg, two grandsons, James Brooks and Michael Brooks of Norfolk and her great granddaughter, Reese Ahalt of Culpeper. She is also survived by a special cousin, Freeman Funk of Fredericksburg, her sister-in-law, Catherine Ahalt of Frederick, MD, her brother-in-law, Maurice Ahalt and his wife Regina of Middletown, MD, her niece Jane Crews of Farmville, her nephews Ed Compton of Myrtle Beach, SC, James Kaylor of Port St. Lucie, FL. and David Kaylor of Atlanta, GA. Graveside funeral services will be held Monday, August 10, 2006 at 11:00 am at the Mountain View cemetery in Vinton with the Rev Linda Motley officiating. Eloise Denton Huffman
HUFFMAN, ELOISE DENTON, 91 of Pearisburg went to be with the Lord Monday, August 10, 2009 in Greensboro, NC. Mrs. Huffman was born on October 22, 1917 in Ripplemead, VA, and was a daughter of the late Odey Ernest Denton and Betty Price Denton. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Marshall Huffman, one sister, Dorothy Simerly and one brother, George Denton. Mrs. Huffman was a long time, faithful member of the Pearisburg Baptist Church. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Eloise will be dearly missed by her family. She is survived by on daughter, Joyce Brumback and husband George, one son, David Huffman and wife Vickie, granddaughters, Candace Folden, Jamie Trotta and husband Joe, grandsons, Eddie Huffman and wife Diane, William Raynor and great grandsons, Logan and Tyler Huffman, step granddaughter, Ciri Fenzel and husband John, step-great grandson Luke Fenzel and step grandson Scott Raynor. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, August 12, 2009 at the Pearisburg Baptist Church at 10am with the Rev. Eric Keith Keffer
KEFFER, ERIC KEITH, 51 of Pearisburg, VA went to be with the Lord on August 18, 2009 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Eric was born on January 13, 1958 in Pearisburg, VA and was the son of Elbert Lane Keffer and Evelyn Loraine Harrell Keffer. Eric was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Rufus and Elizabeth Riddle Harrell and his paternal grandparents, E. Lee and Minnie Exie Martin Keffer. Eric graduated from Giles High School in 1976 and received 2 associate’s degrees from New River Community College. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Pearisburg and was a member of the Giles Masonic Lodge # 106 A.F. & A.M. Besides his parents, Eric is survived by his son, Kelley Lane Keffer of Pearisburg, a grandson, Tyson Lane Keffer, a sister and brother-in-law, Sherry and Tim Saville of Blacksburg and a nephew Shane Saville of Blacksburg. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, August 21, 2009 at 2:00 pm at the Givens Funeral Chapel in Pearisburg with the Rev. E.C. Lewis (Jack) Paris Anderson, Jr.
ANDERSON, Jr., LEWIS (JACK) PARIS, 76 of Pearisburg, VA. passed away Sunday morning, August 23, 2009 at his home. Jack was born on July 26, 1933 in Pearisburg and was a son of the late Lewis Paris Anderson, Sr. and Lillian Riggs Anderson. Beside his parents he was preceded in death by a grandson, Issak Paris Anderson. Jack was a member of Giles Lodge #106 A.F. & A.M., the Kazim Shrine Temple in Roanoke and a member of the Giles Shrine Club. He is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Lois Jeanette Smith Anderson of Pearisburg, two sons, Mark Anderson and his wife Beth of Pearisburg, Hans Anderson and friend Mary Hale of Pearisburg and two grandchildren, Rhiannon and Kayleigh. Memorial services will be held, Saturday, August 29, 2009 at the Givens Funeral Home in Pearisburg at 3:00 pm.
