McCROSKEY, TERESA (CARMAN) VIADOR, 79 of Pearisburg, VA, passed away Saturday morning, August 29, 2009 in Summerville, S.C. Mrs. McCroskey was born on February 18, 1930 in the Philippines and was a daughter of the late Pedro and Dorotea Yerro Viador. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Emory Clinton McCroskey, one sister and one brother. Mrs. McCroskey was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church in Pearisburg and was a retiree of Federal Mogul in Blacksburg. She is survived by two daughters, Gloria May Vass and her husband Garrie of Summerville, SC, Barbara Jean Sizemore and her husband Joe of Christiansburg, one son, William Clinton McCroskey and his wife Pamela of Pembroke, seven grandchildren, Keith, Regina, Patrick, Cari, Cami, Amanda, Trey and seven great grandchildren, Michael, Jessie, Houston, Kaylie, Cayden, Collin and Ava. The Catholic Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, September 1, 2009 at the Holy Family Catholic in Pearisburg at 11:00 am with Father John Prinelli officiating with burial following in the Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends at the Givens Funeral Home, Monday evening from 6 – 8 pm. Myrtle Joan (Joann) McKinney Munsey
MUNSEY, MYRTLE JOAN (Joann) McKINNEY, 79 of Roanoke, Va passed away September 9, 2009 at Roanoke Rehab Center. Mrs. Munsey was born on February 21, 1930 in Wyoming County, WV and was a daughter of the late Lacy Preston McKinney and Myrtle Garretson McKinney. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel H. Munsey, Jr., a special friend, Billy G. Ramsey, a brother, Lacy Dale McKinney and a sister Willa Kennemur. Joann graduated from Bluefield College and worked for Celanese Corp. in Narrows for ten years before becoming an entrepreneur, owning with her husband Mike’s Market in Pearisburg and then the Skyline Motel in Roanoke Co. She retired at 53 and had a passion for her family, friends, fishing and late night card games. She is survived by her son, Michael H. and wife Elise Campbell Munsey of Roanoke, two grandchildren, Joanna Elise Munsey Merritt and her husband Kevin, Daniel Preston Munsey and his wife Alexandra, two great grandchildren, Lindsay and Alexander Merritt all of Roanoke, VA, and a sister, Joyce Bonner of Rockville, MD. Graveside funeral services will be conducted Saturday, September 12, 2009 at 2:00pm at the Birchlawn Abbey in Pearisburg with Rev. Shahn Wilburn officiating with burial following in the Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends at Birchlawn Abbey from 1 – 2 pm Saturday before the service.
Mildred Cantley Genadopoulos
GENADOPOULOS, MILDRED CANTLEY, 88, of Pearisburg passed away Thursday, September 10, 2009 at Carilion Giles Memorial Hospital in Pearisburg. Mrs. Genadopoulos was born on August 4, 1921 in Winifrede, WV., and was a daughter of the late Clarence W. Cantley and Bessie Combs Cantley Daniel. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George J. Genadopoulos, two sisters, Uledene C. Bean, Jessie C. Dolan and one brother, Clarence V. Cantley. Mildred was a Marine Veteran of WWII. She went through basic training at Camp Lejeune, NC. before being transferred to Cherry Point, NC. where she was assigned to Navy Supply. Mildred and George owned and operated the Virginian Restaurant for over 30 years along with her brother-in-law and sister in law, Mike and Eula. She was also an original member of the Pearisburg Church of Christ. She is survived by her son, John G. Genadopoulos of Pearisburg, one brother, Panco Cantley and his wife Jackie of New Castle, two sisters, Mary C. Brammer of Charleston, WV., Connie C. Viars of Oveida, Fl. and several nieces, nephews and special friends. Funeral services will be held, Sunday, September 13, 2009 at 2:00 pm at the Givens Funeral Chapel in Pearisburg with entombment following in the Birchlawn Abbey in Pearisburg. Thomas Lee (Bud) Brotherton
THOMAS LEE (Bud) BROTHERTON, 79 of Pearisburg, VA, passed away Sunday night, September 20, 2009 in Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC. Mr. Brotherton was born on March 21, 1930 in Pearisburg, VA and was a son of the late Fred Sheffey Brotherton and Mary Woods Brotherton. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte Lee Nester, one brother, Robert Sheffey Brotherton, Sr. and one nephew, John Michael Brotherton. Mr. Brotherton was a Korean Marine Veteran, a member of the First United Methodist Church in Pearisburg, and member of the Giles Masonic Lodge # 106 A.F. & A.M. in Pearisburg and was a retired employee of Appalachian Power Company with 41 years service. He is survived by one brother, James F. Brotherton and his wife Margaret of Pearisburg, one niece, Marilyn B. Kingrea and her husband Jack of Pearisburg, two nephews, Robert Sheffey (Robin) Brotherton of Maybrook, VA, James F. Brotherton and his wife Jana of High Point, NC, three great nephews and two great nieces. Funeral services will be conducted, Wednesday September 23, 2009 at 2:00 pm at the Givens Funeral Chapel in Pearisburg with Dr. Brad Scott and Dr. Fred L. Austin officiating with entombment and a masonic service following in the Birchlawn Abbey in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends at the Givens Funeral Home Tuesday evening from 6 – 8 pm.
David Orvil Stafford
STAFFORD, DAVID ORVIL, 86 of Pearisburg, VA and Clifton Forge, passed away, Monday, September 21, 2009 at Allegheny Hospital in Clifton Forge, VA. Mr. Stafford was born on February 27, 1923 in Princeton, WV and was a son of the late Robert Luther Stafford and Blanche Frances Kelley Stafford. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Hazel Stafford Crosier Tickle and Kathleen Stafford Gautier. Mr. Stafford was an Air Force Veteran. He is survived by one sister, Carrie Stafford Trout of Pearisburg, two nephews, Ronnie Trout of Pearisburg and Gary Trout and his wife Edith G. of Roanoke. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, September 24, 2009 at 2 pm at the Givens Funeral Chapel in Pearisburg with Dr. Fred L. Yvonne Meadows Dickerson
YVONNE MEADOWS DICKERSON, 69 of Pearisburg, Va. left for her heavenly home on Monday, September 28, 2008 at Augusta Nursing Home in Fishersville, VA. Mrs. Dickerson was born on November 19, 1939 and was a daughter of the late Floyd Philip (Bruzz) Meadows and Katherine Irene Ramsey Meadows. Mrs. Dickerson was employed by the Celanese Corporation in Narrows for 25 years and is the former wife of Bobby Dickerson of Christiansburg, VA. Yvonne will forever be remembered by her devoted brothers: Aaron Ramsey, Washington, D.C.; Floyd "Buddy" Meadows Jr.; and Alex Meadows, both of Pearisburg, Va, adored children: Jacqueline Dickerson-Hunter & husband John, Tampa, Florida; Philip Dickerson and wife Ginele, Baltimore, Maryland; Barbara Jean Dickerson-Slaughter and husband Reginald, Staunton, VA., treasured grandchildren: Erika Yvonne Hunter, Tampa, Florida; Adam Philip Dickerson, Columbia, Maryland; Jessica Irene Hunter, Tampa, Florida; Mark Allen Dickerson, Baltimore, Maryland; Benjamin Thornton Slaughter and Sarah Lacy Slaughter both of Staunton, Va, beloved lifelong friend Alma Mae Hutchinson, Pearisburg, Va, Roger Wagner, Dublin, Va, whom she cherished like a son, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends. Yvonne loved the Lord, and cherished her family, her children and grandchildren were the love of her life and she shared in their every accomplishment no matter how small. She had a love of travel, especially to visit her children & grandchildren. She loved life and spread her enthusiasm to all that she met; she never met a stranger and always gave of herself. She had a heart of gold. A Celebration of her life will be held Saturday, October 3, 2009 at 1:00 pm at the First Baptist Church, Virginia Heights in Pearisburg with the Rev. Norma June Crosier Bales, 77 of Pearisburg, VA passed away Sunday morning October 11, 2009 at her home. Mrs. Bales was born on April 29, 1932 and was a daughter of the late Clinton Roscoe Crosier and Gertrude Baker Crosier. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by 1 sister and 4 brothers. Mrs. Bales was a retired employee of First Union Bank in Pearisburg and was a member of Angels Rest Fellowship in Pearisburg. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Ivan G. Bales, Sr., of Pearisburg, one son, Ivan G. Bales, Jr. of Pearisburg, three grandchildren, Christopher T. Bales, Ashley M. Bales, Matthew W. Bales and one sister and brother-in-law Phyllis C. and Odell Martin of Pearisburg. Charles Robert Hartwell
CHARLES ROBERT HARTWELL, 77 of Pearisburg, VA, went to be with the Lord Monday evening, October 12, 2009 at Carilion Giles Memorial Hospital in Pearisburg. Mr. Hartwell, also known as "Haney", was born on March 3, 1932 and was a son of the late Oaky Johnson Hartwell and Margaret Linsenmyer. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Lutishia Gibson Hartwell and one sister, Gloria H. Taylor. Mr. Hartwell worked for the Giles County School System from 1963 – 1990. While teaching school, he also worked for the N & W Railroad in the rail yard in Bluefield, WV for 27 years. Mr. Hartwell was also a past member of Eggleston Masonic Lodge #309 A.F. & A.M. He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law Dee Dee and Bobby Terry of Pearisburg, one step son, David W. Smith of Pearisburg, five grandchildren, Christina and her husband Gene Neice, Shalane Terry, Tim and Garrett Smith, Miranda Quesenberry and three great grandchild. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, October 15, 2009 at 1:00 pm with the Rev. Eddie Kendall officiating with burial following in the Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6 – 8 pm at the Givens Funeral Home in Pearisburg. Full military honors will be given by American Legion Post #68 in Narrows American Legion Post #311 and VFW Post #6000 in Narrows.
Elsie Surber Edwards
Ms. Edwards, of Charlotte, NC, formerly of Pearisburg, Va. was born March 23, 1916 and died Oct 10, 2009. She retired as Purchasing Agent for Giles Memorial Hospital after 20 years of service.Elsie and husband, Stuart, moved to Charlotte in 1998 and resided at Merrywood on Park Road. After 61 years of marriage Stuart died in 2003, and Elsie continued living a fruitful Christian life. She served as one of Merrywood’s Ambassadors, and was leader of the weekly Vesper service, as well as teaching her beloved Sunday School class at Mouzon United Methodist.
Ms. Edwards’ Sunday School teaching included over 35 years at First United Methodist Church in Pearisburg, Va., where she founded "The Willing Workers" class.
Elsie’s voice mail stated: "This is the day that the Lord has made" Even a phone call to her could lift a person’s spirits.
A funeral service is scheduled for 11:00 Sat, Oct. 17 at Birchlawn Abbey in Pearisburg,Va. A Memorial Service will be held at Merrywood on Park Road in Charlotte Sunday Oct. 18 at 5:00 pm.
Elsie Edwards is survived by daughter Beth and her husband Wes Argabrite of Charlotte, NC.,son Charles Edwards and his wife Nancy of Palmyra, Va., Grandchildren: Jason Edwards, Anna Edwards and Tresa Wilhelm. Great-grandchildren: Bryce Edwards, Logan Wilhelm and Peyton Wilhelm.

Clarence (Mullie) Coleman Mulheren, Jr.
Clarence (Mullie) Coleman Mulheren, Jr., 85, of Pearisburg, VA., passed away in his home surrounded by loving family and friends on October 27, 2009. Mullie was born on February 7, 1924 in Hinton, WV. to the late Clarence Coleman Mulheren, Sr. and Ethel Mary Hornbarger Mulheren. Mullie was very proud to have served his country in the Pacific Theater during World War II and the Korean Conflict as a member of Underwater Demolition Team 3, which later became the Navy SEALs. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal with the Combat "V"; Pacific Theater Ribbon; American Theater Ribbon; Victory Medal; and the Korean Presidential Unit Citation. He was made an Honorary Seal in 2002 and served as Honorary Chaplain of the UDT-SEAL Association on Little Creek Base in Virginia Beach. He was the Secretary-Treasurer of UDT 3 and enjoyed attending UDT-SEAL reunions through the years. Mullie was a graduate of Concord College where he played Varsity football and where he met his soul mate and wife-to-be. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Pearisburg for 52 years and enjoyed singing in the Chancel Choir all of those years. He served as a lay speaker for church. Mullie was a teacher in Physical Education and Business for 34 years. He was Head of the Business Education Department at Giles High School. Mullie coached football, basketball, cross country, and track. He coached two state championship cross-country teams. Mullie served as a leader for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes at Giles High School. He mentored and encouraged many students and athletes who have kept in touch with him through the years. Mullie served 22 years as Recreation Director for the Town of Pearisburg, where he taught thousands to swim. He was a member of the VFW and the American Legion. He was a 50-year member of the Lions Club where he served many years as secretary. He was a member of Giles Masonic Lodge #106 in Pearisburg, served on the Board of Directors and as Secretary of the Giles Education Association Federal Credit Union. Mullie was Secretary of the Retired Teachers Association. He was a member of the Auxiliary at Carilion Giles Memorial Hospital.
In addition to his parents, Mullie was predeceased by one sister, Helen M. Ney. Surviving Mullie is his beloved and devoted wife, Ann Yeager Mulheren, to whom he was married
for 56 ˝ years. He is also survived by son, Kelly C. Mulheren, of Mechanicsville, son, M. Patrick Mulheren, of Costa Rica, daughter, Kimberly M. Norton and son-in-law Raymond J. Norton, of Norfolk; sister, Shirley M. Kincaid, of Manassas; granddaughter, Rachel Mulheren, of Harrisonburg; grandson, John Mulheren, of Blacksburg, and granddaughter, Ann Grace Norton, of Norfolk; a special nephew, Clarence Ney, and his family; many other family members, and a multitude of friends. Mullie was devoted to God, family, and friends. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, October 31, 2009 at 2:00 pm on the First United Methodist Church in Pearisburg, VA with Dr. Brad Scott officiating with interment following at Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg, VA. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6 – 8m pm at the Givens Funeral Home in Pearisburg.
