Willa Dean Harless French

Willa Dean Harless French of Pearisburg, VA went to be with the Lord on Thursday, June 16, 2005. She died at Giles Memorial Hospital. She was born in Waiteville, WV on July 9, 1935 to the late Aaron P. (Deck) and Ruth P. Harless. A devout Christian, dedicated wife, loving mother, and caring friend, Mrs. French was often described as “someone who daily lived her faith.” She was a member of the Rich Creek United Methodist Church and was actively involved for most of her life with the Ingram Village United Methodist Church. She is survived by her husband, Herman D. French, sister Dell Harry and brother-in-law Willard Harry of Pearisburg, daughter Ruth Ann Lytton and fiancée Derek Klock of Blacksburg, son Tony B. Harry and wife Terry of Peterstown, WV, and step-son Herman D. French, Jr. of St. Petersburg, FL. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 18, 2005 at 2 p.m. at Givens Funeral Chapel with the Reverend Aubrey Whitlow and Reverend Rick Franco officiating with entombment following in the Birchlawn Abbey. Friends may call on the family on Friday June 17, 2005 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Givens Funeral Chapel in Pearisburg. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to either Rich Creek United Methodist Church (108 Old Virginia Avenue, Rich Creek, VA ZIP); Ingram Village United Methodist Church (237 Bane Rd., Pearisburg, VA 24134); or to Operation Christmas Child, Samaritan’s Purse, P O. Box 3000, 801 Bamboo Road, Boone, NC 28607, the children’s “shoe box” charity that she had supported for years.

George Samuel (Sammy) Level

LEVEL, GEORGE SAMUEL (SAMMY), 56 of Blacksburg, formerly of Pearisburg, passed away Thursday evening, June 16, 2005 at Pulaski Community Hospital. Mr. Level was born on January 2, 1949 in Pearisburg and was a son of the late George Wallace Level and Irene McCormick Level. Mr. Level graduated Giles High School in 1967 and received his bachelors and masters degree from VA Tech. Mr. Level taught biology, earth science and math at Narrows High School for 32 years. He was the MACC Commissioner and a gifted coordinator. He is survived by his Aunt Gerry Eddy of Pearisburg, a cousin Judy Level Stafford of Pearisburg and numerous other cousins, many dear friends and a host of students. A memorial service will be held, Monday, June 20, 2005 at the Givens Funeral Chapel at 2:00 pm with Rev. Mike Biggs officiating. The family will receive friends at the Givens Funeral Home in Pearisburg on Monday from 1 – 2 pm. Interment icon will follow in the Salem Presbyterian Church cemetery in Organ Cave, WV at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Salem Presbyterian Church cemetery Fund at Rt 2, Ronceverte, WV 24970, the American Heart Association or to a charity of your choice.

Nancy Duncan Lucas

LUCAS, NANCY DUNCAN, 84 of Pearisburg, VA. passed away Tuesday night, April 26, 2005 at the Highland Ridge Rehab Center in Dublin, VA. Mrs Lucas was born on April 7, 1921 in Newbern, VA and was a daughter of the late Charles L. Duncan, Sr., and Mary Emma Cooper Duncan. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold E. Lucas, Sr., 2 sons, Robert Jennings Lucas and George C. Lucas. She is survived by 2 sons, Arnold E. (Corky) Lucas of Christiansburg, James M. and Ann Lucas of Narrows, 1 brother, Charles L. Duncan, Jr. of Pipestem, WV, 10 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at Friday, April 29, 2005 at11:00am at the Givens Funeral Chapel in Pearisburg with the Dr. Fred L. Austin officiating with burial following in the Newbern cemetery in Dublin, VA. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6 – 8 pm at the Givens Funeral Home in Pearisburg. The family would like to thank the staff at Highland Ridge Health and Rehab Center for the loving care shown to our mother. Memorial donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church in Pearisburg or St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Christiansburg.

Elizabeth Emaline (Betsy) Witt Osborne Lawson

LAWSON, ELIZABETH EMALINE (BETSY) WITT OSBORNE, 69 of Narrows, VA, peacefully passed after a short illness, Tuesday morning, May 17, 2005 at Riverview Nursing Home in Rich Creek, VA. Mrs. Lawson was born on January 6, 1936 in Big Stone Gap, VA and was a daughter of the late Thomas Jefferson Witt and Bess Riggs Witt. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Hezekiah N. Osborne and one brother, Thomas J. Witt. Mrs. Lawson received a B.S. in Music Education from Appalachian State University, a masters degree in English literature from VPI and was an LPN and retired from Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Blacksburg and was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Pearisburg. Mrs. Lawson is survived by 3 sons, Thomas (Tom) Neil Osborne of Narrows, William J. (Jeff) and wife Ann Osborne of Clifton Forge, Phillip J. (Josh) and wife Beth K. Osborne of Pearisburg, 6 grandchildren, Katelyn, Erin, Cassie, Jacob, Ciara and Jack, 1 niece, Becky Meade of Johnston City, TN, 1 sister-in-law, Jean Carden of Johnston City, TN.. Memorial services will be held, Saturday, May 21, 2005 at 2:00 at the Givens Funeral Chapel in Pearisburg with the Dr. Fred L. Austin officiating. The family will receive friends Saturday from 1 – 2 pm.

William David Thomas

THOMAS, WILLIAM DAVID, 71 of Pearisburg, VA passed away Tuesday, May 17, 2005 at his home in Pearisburg. Mr. Thomas was born on August 7, 1933 in Pearisburg and was a son of the late William H. Thomas, Jr. and Elizabeth Douthat Thomas. Mr. Thomas was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Pearisburg. He is survived by one brother, Robert N. and wife Victoria A. Thomas of Plano, TX, 1 aunt, Dorothy Walkup of Richmond and several cousins, nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 21, 2005 at 11:00 am at the First United Methodist Church in Pearisburg with Dr. Tony Collins and Dr. Fred L. Austin officiating with burial following in the Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6 – 8 pm at the Givens Funeral Home in Pearisburg, VA.

Robert Lee (Bobby) Burton

BURTON, ROBERT (Bobby) LEE, 50, a loving husband and father, of Pearisburg, VA passed away Friday evening, April 1, 2005 in Ripplemead, VA. Mr. Burton was born on June 11, 1954 in Giles County and was a son of the late James Burton and Rowena Brumfield Burton of Pearisburg. Mr. Burton was a 1972 graduate of Giles High School and had worked at the Chemical Lime Plant since he was 18 years of age. Besides his mother, he is survived by his wife of 24 years, Tonya Martin Burton of Pearisburg, 3 sons, Eric (Bubba) L. Burton and wife Kelly of Pearisburg, Jason (Macky) R. Burton of Pearisburg and Adam (Adder) S. Burton of Pearisburg, 1 brother, Jamie Burton and wife Crystal of Rich Creek, VA, 3 sisters, Birdie Moye and husband Doug, Betty Burton and Anna Holt and husband Alvin all of Pearisburg, his mother-in-law, Loretta Martin of Pembroke and his father-in-law, Carson Martin of Snowville, VA., 2 brothers-in-law, Carson Martin of Narrows and Jerry Martin, Sr. of Snowville. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, April 4, 2005 at 2:00 pm at the Givens Funeral Chapel in Pearisburg with the Rev. Eddie Kendall officiating with burial following in the Burton Family cemetery in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends Sunday evening at the Givens Funeral Home from 6 – 8 pm.

Mable Victoria Puckett Hale

HALE, MABLE VICTORIA PUCKETT, 82 of Pearisburg, VA passed away, Saturday, April 2, 2005 at Carilion Giles Memorial Hospital in Pearisburg. Mrs. Hale was born on November 14, 1922 in Vivian, WV. Mable’s mother passed away when was two years old. She then went to live with her aunt, Mrs. Jackson, in Russell County, VA. She graduated from Honaker High School, then moved to Bluefield, WV where she attended and graduated McLean Business College. After graduating business school, she worked at Appalachain Power in Bluefield, WV. In 1949 she and her husband moved to Pearisburg, VA where she was employed as the Town of Pearisburg Clerk & Treasurer for many years. She is survived by her husband, James Leonard Hale of Pearisburg, one daughter, Joy Lynn Kerekes of Dove Canyon, CA, three grandsons, Matthew and wife Cherae Fraker Kerekes, Micah Kerekes, and Mitchell Kerekes, one great-granddaughter, Alexis Cherae Kerekes and one sister, Brooksie Burkentine of Haverdegrace, MD. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, April 6, 2005 at 11:00 am at the First United Methodist Church in Pearisburg with Dr. Tony Collins and Dr. Fred L. Austin officiating with burial following in the Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family will received friends Wednesday, Morning at the First United Methodist Church from 10 – 11 am, one hour before the funeral. Memorial donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church Building Fund, 1101 Valleyview Dr., Pearisburg, VA. 24134.

Waldo Emerson Williams

WILLIAMS, WALDO EMERSON, 86 of Pearisburg, VA passed away Sunday morning, April 10, 2005 at Riverview Nursing Home in Rich Creek, VA. Mr. Williams was a U.S Army Veteran of WWII, a retired employee of the Celanese Corp. in Narrows and worked for Givens Funeral Home for over 40 years. Mr. Williams was a member of the Pearisburg Christ Fellowship Church. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Lorraine Fletcher Williams of Pearisburg, two sons, Gary W. Williams and wife Audrey of Smith Mountain Lake, Dale E. Williams and wife Sharon of Blue Ridge, five grandchildren, Gary Lee Williams, Lorraine Dillon and husband Malcolm, Heather Henderson and husband Patrick, Shannon Williams and SGT Joshua Williams, and two great grandchildren, Kelci and Abbie Dillon. Funeral services will be held, Wednesday, April 13, 2005 at 2:00 pm at the Pearisburg Christ Fellowship Church with the Rev. Greg Cox and Dr. J. Carl Rouintree officiating with burial and a full military service by VFW Post 6000, American Legion Posts, Narrows 68 and Pembroke 214 in the Birchlawn Burial Park. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6 – 8 pm at the Pearisburg Christ Fellowship Church. Arrangements made by Givens Funeral Home in Pearisburg.

Millard Junior Dickerson

DICKERSON, MILLARD JUNIOR, 81 of Pearisburg, VA went to be with the Lord on Thursday, March 24, 2005 at Pulaski Community Hospital. Mr. Dickerson was born on July 2, 1923 in Kimbleton, VA, Giles County and was a son of the late Millard O. and Mary Chapman Dickerson. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Preston Dickerson, Robert L. Dickerson, Sr., Arnold (Pete) Dickerson and one sister, Estelle Banks. Mr. Dickerson was a WWII Army Veteran, a member and deacon of the First Baptist Church in Virginia Heights, Pearisburg, a was retiree of the Celanese Corp. in Narrows with 43 years service, retiring in 1987, and a member of the American Legion and VFW Post #6000. He is survived by his wife, Violet Elizabeth Anderson Dickerson of Pearisburg, two sons and a daughter-in-law, Danny L. Dickerson of Pearisburg, Stevie L. Dickerson and wife Tina of Blacksburg, two daughters and a son-in-law, Mary Carol Dickerson Gray and husband Samuel S. Gray, Jeanette Dickerson of Pearisburg, and three grandchildren, Michael L. Dickerson, Ashley Nicole Dickerson and Sierra Renee Dickerson, 1 brother-in-law, Earnest Banks of Pearisburg, two sisters-in-law, Glenna Chapman Dickerson and Margaret (Poly) Chapman Dickerson, both of Pearisburg and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Funeral services will be conducted on Monday, March 28, 2005 at 2:00 pm at the First Baptist Church in Pearisburg with the Rev. Michael L. Bratton officiating with burial following in the Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends Sunday from 6 – 9 pm at the First Baptist Church in Pearisburg.
