William Lee (Mouse) Harris
HARRIS, WILLIAM LEE (MOUSE), 58 of Pearisburg, VA passed away Tuesday, March 29, 2005 at Riverview Nursing Home in Rich Creek, VA. Mr. Harris was born in Pearisburg, VA on August 5, 1946 and was a son of the late Lee Wilson Harris and Annie Mae Johnston Harris of Thessalia Community in Pearisburg, VA. Mr. Harris was a former employee of the Allen R. Neely Co., and an accomplished wood worker who was very creative with his hands, while working out of his house on projects for his friends and neighbors. Besides his mother, Annie Mae Harris, he is survived by one son, Jason Edward Harris of Pearisburg and his Fiancée, Shelly H. Cardwell of Pearisburg, one daughter, Trisha H. Falls of Pearisburg & Fiancée James E. Perkins, 4 grandchildren, Cory M. Falls, Caitlyn B. Falls, Amanda J. Perkins and Jason Wade Harris. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, March 31, 2005 at 2:00 pm at the Thessalia United Methodist Church in Pearisburg with the Rev. Brad Lewis and Charles Henderson officiating with burial following in the Thessalia cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Givens Funeral Home in Pearisburg Wednesday evening from 6 – 8 pm.
Sylvia Louise Buckland Munsey
MUNSEY, SLYVIA LOUISE BUCKLAND, 67 of Pearisburg, VA. passed away Thursday, March 31, 2005 at Carilion Giles Memorial Hospital after a long illness. She was born February 25, 1938 in Narrows, VA., and was a daughter of the late Darrell and Edith Buckland of Pearisburg, Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Walter F. Munsey, Jr., two sisters, Betty Lou Poff of Roanoke, and Flora Elizabeth McKlarney of Rich Creek. She was retired from the Giles County School System where she worked at Macy McClaugherty Elementary School cafeteria. She was a member of the Ingram Village United Methodist Church. She is survived by a daughter, Cathy McClaugherty and husband Steve of Pearisburg, one son, Wayne Munsey and wife Teri of Ripplemead, one grandson, Brandon Keith McClaugherty, two step-grandchildren, Kaila Medley and Chad Condrey, three step great granddaughters, Tiffany, Tarah and Kelsi Medley, four sisters, Lois Thompson of Oakvale, WV, Jerry Houchins of Pearisburg, Luella Lafon of Salem and special sister and caregiver, Clara Ruth Miller of Peterstown, WV. A special cousin and caregiver Charlotte Faulkner of Peterstown, WV, one brother-in-law, Lawrence Poff of Roanoke and numerous other family members and friends. Funeral services will be conducted, Sunday, April 3, 2005 at 2:00 pm at the Givens Funeral Chapel in Pearisburg with the Rev Rick Franco officiating with burial following in the Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends at the Givens Funeral Home in Pearisburg Saturday evening from 6 – 8 pm.
Stella Christine Chapman (Tootsie) Hilton
Stella Christine Chapman (Tootsie) Hilton, passed away in Riverview Nursing Home on March 19, 2005. She was a homemaker, mother and a faithful wife of 62 years of her late husband Curtis Melvin Hilton who preceded her in death in 2003.
Born in Saltville, Smyth County, Virginia on October 1, 1921, she spent all of her adult life in Pearisburg, Virginia. She was the last of eleven children and was preceded in death by her father John Ross Chapman, Sr. and Elizabeth Jane Taylor Chapman.
She was a member of the Anne S. Hoilman Sunday School Class while she attended the First United Methodist Church in Pearisburg for over sixty years. She also attended the First Church of God in Rich Creek while her son was the pastor. She had a reserved but outgoing personality and extended hospitality to family, friend, and neighbor. Over the years, she supported her church in many ways and always tried to do what was right and treat everybody fairly.
She is survived by firstborn son Gerald W. Hilton and daughter-in-law Shirley of Narrows, Virginia, son Thomas W. Hilton of Pearisburg, and three grandchildren: Michael R. Hilton and wife Heather of Mineral, Virginia, Susan April Hilton Sawyer and husband Robert of Richmond, Virginia, and Andrew Scott Hilton and wife Kathy of Danville, Virginia. Also four great grandchildren; Robert Kenneth Sawyer III and David Hilton Sawyer of Richmond. Step-grand children Anthony Hubbard and Kayla Hubbard of Mineral.
Friends and family are invited to the wake from 6 – 8pm Monday on March 21, 2005 at Givens Funeral Home in Pearisburg, Virginia. The funeral will be conducted at Givens Funeral Home on Tuesday, March 22, 2005 at 11:00am with Dr. Fred L. Austin and Rev. Clarence E. Dillon officiating with burial following at the Birchlawn Burial Park in front of the Mausoleum.
The family has requested Memorial contributions for Bibles be made to The Gideons International in lieu of flowers.
Ruth Lipes Johnston
JOHNSTON, RUTH LIPES, 95 of Pearisburg, VA, formerly of Bluefield, VA, passed away Monday, March 21, 2005 at Riverview Nursing Home in Rich Creek, VA. Mrs. Johnston was born on May 20, 1909 and was a daughter of the late Thurston S. and Agnes Shell Lipes. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert S. Johnston. Mrs. Johnston was a faithful member of the Pearisburg Presbyterian Church and was formerly an active member of the Fincastle Presbyterian Church in Bluefield, VA. She was a graduate of Bluefield College and a sports and music enthusiast. She is survived by one son, Herbert S. (Buddy) Johnston and wife Janet of Claytor Lake, VA, one daughter, Judy Johnston Carter and her husband, Ray of Pearisburg and two grandchildren, Christine Johnston Jensen and her husband Skip of Williamsburg, VA, and Scott Johnston of McLean, VA, and one great granddaughter, Skylar Jensen, two step-grandchildren, Ken Carter and Audi Carter Texeria both of Greenville, SC. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, March 24, 2005 at the 11:00 am at the Pearisburg Presbyterian Church with the Rev. David Snider and Dr. Gina Rhea officiating. Burial will follow in the Monte Vista Park cemetery in Princeton, WV at 2:00 pm. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6 – 8 at the Givens Funeral Home in Pearisburg. Roberta Maye Knapp Hutsenpiller
HUTSENPILLER, ROBERTA MAYE KNAPP, 93 of Ripplemead, VA passed away Thursday, March 24, 2005 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke, VA. Mrs. Hutsenpiller was born on May 7, 1911 in Dawson, WV and was a daughter of the late Hurbert Patrick and Mary Alice Woolard Knapp. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by 2 sisters, Nellie J. McMillion, Frankie F. Surbaugh and 1 brother, Woodrow M. Knapp. Mrs. Hutsenpiller a graduate of Teachers School in WV and taught in a one room school for 9 years. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Pearisburg, a faithful member of the Anne S. Holiman Sunday School Class, a regular attendee of the Prayer and Share group and an active member of the Ripplemead Community Club. She is survived by one son, James F. Hutsenpiller of Ripplemead, one sister, Mary E. Humphrey of Lewisburg, WV, 2 grandchildren, Roberta H. and David Coleson of Anderson, IN, William T. Hutsenpiller of Alexandria, VA and one great granddaughter, Tiffanie M. Coleson. Funeral services will be conducted, Saturday, March 26, 2005 at 11:00 am at the First United Methodist Church in Pearisburg with Dr. Tony Collins and Dr. Fred L. Austin officiating with burial following in the Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends at the Givens Funeral Home in Pearisburg from 6 – 8 pm.
Norman (Doc) Cecil Hilton
HILTON, NORMAN (DOC) CECIL, 61 of Pembroke, VA passed away Tuesday evening, March 8, 2005 at his home. Mr. Hilton was born on March 10, 1943 in Pearisburg and was a son of the late Roscoe S. and Lanie Holdren Hilton. Mr. Hilton was a retired heavy equipment operator and was a U. S Army Veteran. He is survived by one son, John W. Hilton of Pembroke, one daughter, Pamela Sue Hilton Davis of Salem, 5 grandchildren and 2 sisters, Gearldine H. McCroskey of Pembroke and Barbara Williams of Pembroke. Graveside funeral services with the American Legion will be conducted Friday, March 11, 2005 at 11:00am at the Hilton Family cemetery, Big Branch Hollow Rd in Pembroke, VA. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6 – 8 pm at the Givens Funeral Home in Pearisburg, VA.
Rom Lee Matlock
MATLOCK, ROM LEE, of Pearisburg, VA passed away Monday, March 14, 2005 at Carilion Giles Memorial Hospital in Pearisburg. Mr. Matlock was born on February 16, 1940 and was a son of the late Crowson A. and Zeb Milstead Matlock. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Marvin Alexander Matlock. Mr. Matlock was a U.S. Army Veteran, a member of the Angel’s Rest Baptist Fellowship Church in Pearisburg, a member of Masonic Lodge # 423 A.F. & A.M. in Sparta, NC, and a member of the American Legion Post #68. He was a math teacher and coach and at Sparta High School in NC, and Independence High School in VA. He was a math teacher, a football coach, a wrestling coach and an assistant principal at Radford High School. He was the assistant principal at Christiansburg High School for 1 year and then for 19 years was a principal at Narrows High School, Giles High School and then took official retirement in 1999 as the principal of Eastern Elementary School in Giles. Mr. Matlock then taught part time as a math teacher from 1999 until now. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Nancy Shepherd Matlock of Pearisburg, his two daughters who were the light of his life, Heather Leeann Matlock of Charlotte, NC, Whitney Lee Matlock of Pearisburg, three brothers, Albert Crowson & Margaret Matlock of Indian Trail, NC, Harold Grady & Judy Matlock of Stony Point, NC and James Wilson Matlock of Hickory, NC, one brother-in-law and his wife, Jim and Nancy Shepherd of Piney Creek, NC, one sister-in-law and her husband, Georgia & Clay Sheets of Sparta, NC and special family, Bill and Lois Riddle of Narrows, Tim and Toni Robertson of Pearisburg, Anna Lowe of Narrows, Missy Riddle of Narrows and was Paw Paw Rom to Ashley, Chad, Cliffy and Kelcie. He is also survived by several nieces & nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, March 16, 2005 at 2:00pm at the Angel’s Rest Fellowship Baptist Church in Pearisburg with Dr. Charles Taylor and Rev. John Gess officiating with burial following in the Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends at the Givens Funeral Home in Pearisburg on Tuesday evening from 6 – 8 pm.
