Emma Gertrude Collins Phlegar
PHLEGAR, EMMA GERTRUDE COLLINS, 93 of Ripplemead, VA passed away Tuesday night, February 22, 2005 at Montgomery Regional Hospital in Blacksburg. Mrs Phlegar was born on January 25, 1912 in Newport, V. Mrs Phlegar was a member of Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women’s Society. She taught the Adult Ladies Sunday School Class for 17 years, later substituting in the combined class of Adult Men and Women’s Classes. She was a farmer dealing in cattle and an apple and peach orchard until the last few years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Snidow Phlegar who died in 1952. She is survived by 1 son, William Carroll Phlegar of Ripplemead, VA and many very dear friends. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, February 25, 2005 at 3:00pm at the Pearisburg Presbyterian Church with the Rev Chad Hrbek and Rev Morris Bennett officiating with burial following in the Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg, VA. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6 - 8 pm at the Givens Funeral Home in Pearisburg. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church in Newport, VA.
Mary Ellen Sears Woodie
WOODIE, MARY ELLEN SEARS, 59 of Pearisburg, VA passed away, March 3, 2005 at her home. Mrs Woodie was born on April 7, 1945 in Beckley, WV and was a daughter of the late Otto and Pearl Dick Sears. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Treasa Woodie. She is survived by her husband, Paul Allen Woodie of Pearisburg, 4 sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry & Shelby Woodie of Bland, John & Lynn Woodie of Pulaski, Robert & Carie Woodie of Pulaski, Larry Woodie of Bluefield, WV, 1 daughter, Lisa Yowler of Pearisburg, 2 sisters, Lottie Duncan of Beckley, WV, Madeline Wright of Beckley, WV, 1 brother, Curtis Sears of Beckley, 16 grandchildren, 1 great grandchildren and several nieces & nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, March 6, 2005 at the Givens Funeral Chapel at 2:00pm with the Rev David Gwynn officiating with burial following in the Angel’s Rest cemetery in Narrows, VA. Bertha Etta Earnest Moody
MOODY, BERTHA ETTA EARNEST, 88 of Pearisburg, VA passed away Wednesday evening March 2, 2005 at Riverview Nursing Home in Rich Creek, VA. Mrs. Moody was born on April 2, 1916 in McDowell County, WV and was a daughter of the late Gaylord T. Earnest, Sr. and Cora Lee Lynch Earnest. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by one brother, Gaylord Earnest, Jr., one sister, Shirley E. Smith and her husband, John Moody. Mrs Moody was a member of the Pearisburg Church of Christ. She is survived by 8 sisters, Ada Ratliff, Virginia Earnest, Clara Earnest, Edith Wudarski, Hazel Eaton, Dorothy Holsenback, Eva Litchfield all of Pearisburg and Margie Bean and husband Joseph of Brooksville, Fl and many nieces and nephews and many great nieces and nephews. Graveside funeral services will be conducted Monday, March 7, 2005 at the Birchlawn Abbey in Pearisburg at 2:00 with Panco Cantley officiating with burial following in Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg, VA. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 6 – 8 at the Givens Funeral Home in Pearisburg. Memorial donations may be made to the Pearisburg Church of Christ.
Wilma Louise Davis Jackson
Wilma Louise Davis Jackson, 84, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Saturday, March 5, 2005 at Riverview Nursing Home in Rich Creek, VA. Formally from Lansing Michigan and Phoenix, Arizona, she and her husband Raymond came to Giles County to be near their son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and the Reverend Diane Jackson of Pearisburg, who survive her. Surviving family also include her sister, Barbara Crouse of Grand Haven, Michigan; her grandsons, Donald Jackson of Hampton, Virginia and Peter Jackson of Las Vegas, Nevada and their great-granddaughter, Brooke Jackson, who lives in Goldsboro, NC.
Prior to entering college, Wilma worked for Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, MI. She earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Illinois State University, in Normal, Illinois and taught high school. She began a 41-year career as a medical transcriptionist in Phoenix Arizona, working at the VA Hospital, St. Joseph’s Hospital and Good Samaritan Hospital. These were some of the happiest years of her life. She will be dearly missed by her faithful friends and family. Her sense of humor and sense of caring made a difference in the lives of many people. Her last years at Riverview were enriched by excellent care from staff and new-found friends. A graveside service at inurnment will occur in Michigan at a later date. Arrangements are being handled by Givens Funeral Home, Pearisburg, VA.
Lorraine Walls Wickline
WICKLINE, LORRAINE Walls. 82 of Pearisburg, VA went home to be with the lord on Tuesday, February 8, 2005 at her home surrounded by her husband and family. Mrs. Wickline was born on August 5, 1922 in Simon, WV and was a daughter of the late Dottie & Stella West Walls. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by 2 sisters, infant Fostinna and Mrs. Lavonia Toler of Baileysville, WV. Lorraine was a graduate of Baileysville High School and attended Concord State Teachers College. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Pearisburg, VA where she taught the Anne S. Holman Sunday School Class for several years. She was a member of the Ladies Missionary Society and attended regularly, a weekly Bible study at the Church. Lorraine was a member of the Angel’s Rest Rebekah Lodge, a professional seamstress and her many talents included art and writing poetry. She was an avid reader and devoted student of the word of God
Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 59 years, Gillett Gray Wickline of Pearisburg, 1 daughter and son-in-law, Jacquelyn and Ronald Lee of St. Albans, WV, 1 son and daughter-in-law, Anthony and Mariea Wickline of Narrows, VA, 5 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren, 3 sisters and 2 brothers-in-laws, Mrs. Elizabeth Tilley of Oceana, WV, Anna and Ulbert Belcher, Margaret and Bill Terry all of Matheny, WV and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, February 10, 2005 at the Givens Funeral Chapel in Pearisburg at 11:00 with Dr. Tony Collins, Rev. Tom Rice and Rev. Ron Lee officiating with burial following in the Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg, VA. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening at the Givens Funeral Home from 6 – 8 pm. Mary Byrd Webb Spangler
SPANGLER, MARY BYRD WEBB, 87 of Pearisburg passed away Friday, February 25, 2005 at Carilion Giles Memorial Hospital in Pearisburg, VA. Mrs. Spangler was born on May 27, 1917 in Bluefield, WV and was a daughter of the late Isaac Jefferson and Edna Gardner Webb. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Lester R. Spangler, Sr. and two brothers, Isaac J. Webb, Jr and Tipton V. Webb. Mrs. Spangler was a member of the Pearisburg Presbyterian Church, the Presbyterian Church Circle and pass member of the Pearisburg Jr. Woman’s Club. She also known as being an excellent seamstress. She is survived three sons and daughter-in-laws, Lester R. and Chieko G. Spangler, Jr. of Dayton, OH, James E. and Beth E. Spangler of Gahanna, OH, Thomas M. and Victoria Spangler of Cary, NC, one sister, Helen W. Allen of Pleasant Garden, NC and 5 grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, February 27, 2005 at the Pearisburg Presbyterian Church at 1:00pm with Pastor David R. Snyder officiating with burial following in the Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends at the Givens Funeral Home in Pearisburg, Saturday evening from 6 – 8 pm.

CALDWELL, JAMES EARNEST, 80 of Pearisburg, VA passed away Sunday, February 27, 2005 at the Carilion Giles Memorial Hospital in Pearisburg. Mr. Caldwell was born on October 10, 1924 in Rocky Gap, VA and was a son of the late Earnest and Amy Hagar Caldwell. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by 1 brother, Albert Caldwell. Mr. Caldwell was the former owner of the C & S Oil Co. in Pearisburg, a member of the Wabash Oddfellows Lodge, the Giles Masonic Lodge # 106 A. F. & A. M., and the Pearisburg Moose Lodge. He is survived by his wife, Louise King Caldwell of Pearisburg, one step-daughter and her husband, Sally and Ralph Lambert of the Little Creek community in Bland County, VA. of Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, March 2, 2005 at 11:00 am at the Givens Funeral Chapel in Pearisburg with the Rev. Wayne Monroe officiating with an Oddfellow graveside service and entombment following in the Birchlawn Abbey in Pearisburg. DALTON, Jr., JAMES (JIMMY) LOVELL, 73 of Pearisburg, VA passed away Wednesday night, January 5, 2005 in at Carilion Giles Memorial Hospital in Pearisburg. Mr. Dalton was born on August 19, 1931 in Giles County, VA. He is survived by his wife Reva Ann Arthur Dalton of Pearisburg. Graveside funeral services were held Saturday, January 8, 2005 at 11:00am at the Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg.
