LESTER, CAROLINE ELLIS, 79 of Dublin, VA formally of Eggleston, passed away at her home, Monday morning, November 6, 2006. Mrs. Lester was born on October 30, 1927 and was a daughter of the late Wirt Theodore Ellis and Lynnie Robinson Ellis. Mrs. Lester was a past Worthy Matron of the Paris Chapter # 124 O.E.S and was of the Methodist faith. She is survived by by her husband, Walter Lester of Dublin,one son, Walter Eugene Lester of Radford, three daughters, Bonnie L. and Jerry Golden of Swannanoa, NC, Rita L. and Gary Hix of Fredericksburg, Eva L. and Harry Porterfield of Pulaski, two brothers, Connie Ellis of WV, Robert Ellis of Huntington, WV, four sisters, Ellen Whitten of Xenia, OH, Greetice Milam of Johnson City, TN, Nellie, Adams of Mansfield, OH, Sandy Arrowood of Johnson City, TN, 5 grandchildren, Karen, Brent, Gary, Brian, Eric and four great grandchildren, Hayden, Bryce, Bobby and Meghan. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, November 8, 2006 at 2:00 pm at the Givens Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Columbus Baker, Jr. officiating with burial following in the Highland Memorial Gardens in Dublin, VA. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6 – 8 pm at Givens Funeral Home in Pearisburg.
Kathleen Margie Stafford Gautier
GAUTIER, KATHLEEN MARGIE STAFFORD, 90 of Pearisburg, VA passed away Sunday night at Catawba Hospital in Catawba, VA. Mrs. Gautier was born on February 19, 1916 in Pennacle, WV and was a daughter of the late Robert Luther Stafford and Frances Kelley Stafford. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by Everette Lacy Gautier. Mrs. Gautier was a member of the Bluff City Methodist Church and was a Sunday school Teacher at the Church. She is survived by one brother David Orvil Stafford of Roanoke and one sister Carrie S. Trout of Pearisburg, two nephews, Gary W. Trout of Roanoke, Ronnie L. Trout of Pearisburg, first cousin, Vivian Kelley of Bluefield, VA, and a great niece Nancy Buchanan of Bluefield, VA. Funeral services will be conducted at the Givens Funeral Home in Pearisburg, Thursday September 27, 2006 at 2:00 PM with the Dr. Fred L. Austin officiating with burial following in the Birchlawn Burial in Pearisburg, VA. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6 – 8 pm.
Bertie Davis Hillsman
HILLSMAN, BERTIE DAVIS, 89, of Delray Beach, FL, formerly of Pearisburg, VA, passed away Sunday, October 8, 2006. Mrs Hillsman was born on January 15, 1917, in Mount Airy, NC and was a daughter of the late John D. Davis and Alvia Wagoner Davis. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Randolph (Randy) Hillsman, one sister, Geneveve D. Easter and one brother, Lester Davis. Mrs Hillsman was a retired employee of the Celanese Corp. in Narrows and was a member of the First Christian Church in Pearisburg. She is survived by one daughter, Betty H. Legere of Wellington, FL, two grandchildren, Bryan Legere of Lake Worth, FL, Gary and his wife Heather Legere of Asheville, NC, one great grandchild Jacob Legere and one sister, Elsie Taylor of Christiansburg. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, October 13, 2006 at 3:00 pm at the Birchlawn Abbey in Pearisburg with entombment following. The family will receive friends from 2:30 to 3:00pm before the service at the Abbey.
Gladys Morris Blevins
BLEVINS, GLADYS MORRIS, 89 of Ripplemead, VA, passed away Monday evening, October 9, 2006 at Pulaski Health and Rehab Center. Mrs. Blevins was born on October 13, 1916 in Giles County, VA and was a daughter of the late Wythe Graham (W.G.) Morris and Ida Elizabeth Woods Morris. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Lee Blevins and a great grandson, Zachary Brent Shelton. Mrs. Blevins was a member of the Pearisburg Baptist Church and the Angel’s Rest Rebekah Lodge #72 I.O.O.F. She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Graham L. (Mickey) and Alma Blevins of Blacksburg, Frank Gale and Sandy Blevins of Ripplemead, George R. (G.R.) and Pat Blevins of Roanoke, one daughter and son-in-law, Robena B. and C.E. Hughes of Fairlawn, five grandchildren, Pam & Phil Cady of Newport, Lisa & Russ Shelton of Christiansburg, Scott Hughes & fiancée Courtney Hinkel of Jacksonville, FL, Jason Hughes of Blacksburg, Dane Blevins of Ripplemead, 2 great grandchildren, Yvonne Shelton of Texas and Nicole Shelton of Christiansburg and several nieces & nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, October 12, 2006 at 11:00am at the Givens Funeral Chapel in Pearisburg with Rev. Eddie Kendall officiating with burial following in the Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends from 10 – 11am Thursday morning before the funeral. Judge Robert Lee Powell
POWELL, JUDGE ROBERT LEE, 86 of Pearisburg, VA departed this earthly life on Monday, August 28, 2006 at Riverview Nursing Home in Rich Creek, VA. Judge Powell, as he was fondly referred to, was born on September 26, 1919 in Wise, Co. VA and was a son of the late William H. and Elizabeth Burton Powell, Sr. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Carol Clarke Powell who passed away in February 2004, two brothers, William H. Powell, Jr., Harold J. (Jack) Powell and one sister, Helen J. Powell. As a native of Wise County, VA and even before he graduated from Princeton High School in 1936, he desired to study law. The desire followed him through his years at Concord College and continued after graduation and trailed him to World War II’s pacific theatre, where he served much of his 37 month stint in the Army/Air Force. When the war ended he started working in the Concord College bookstore, saving money for law school. With the help of the G.I. Bill he scraped together his tuition and graduated from Washington and Lee University in 1951. He began a private law practice the following September in Pearisburg. He continued n the private practice of law until January, 1961, when he became a partner with Samuel A. Martin and later that same month he was appointed Giles County Commonwealth’s Attorney by Judge V. L. Sexton, filling the unexpired term of the late Chester J. Stafford and also continued as a partner in the firm of Martin and Powell. He was appointed by the Supreme Court of Virginia as Judge of the 29th Judicial Circuit serving the counties of Giles, Bland and Tazewell on February 1, 1976, from which position he retired on January 31, 1986. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Pearisburg, the Giles County Post of the American Legion, the Virginia State Bar, Giles Lodge No. 106 A.F. & A.M., the Scottish Rite Temple, Giles Shrine Club, Pearisburg Lions’s Club and various other organizations. Judge Powell is survived by five nieces, Jane and Nancy Powell, both of Charleston, WV, Jane (Patsy) Nettles of Roanoke, Susan Leister of Rockville, MD, and Jessica (Annie) Cheatam of Gulf Breeze, FL. Memorial funeral services will be held Sunday, September 3, 2006 at 2:00pm at the First United Methodist Church in Pearisburg with Rev. Ronnie Mutter and Dr. Fred L. Austin officiating with interment at the Roselawn Burial Park in Princeton, WV at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Washington and Lee University or the First United Methodist Church in Pearisburg.
Kyle Edward Burk
BURK, KYLE EDWARD, 91 of Pearisburg, VA passed away Wednesday morning, September 6, 2006 at Riverview Nursing Home in Rich Creek, VA. Mr. Burk was born on April 4, 1915 in Bluefield, WV and was a son of the late Gratton W. and Edith Hearn Burk. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Ruby Thacker Burk and son Daniel K. Burk. Mr. Burk was a retired employee of the Celanese Corp. in Narrows, was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Pearisburg, the Oddfellows Lodge # 1006 and a lifetime member of the Pearisburg Volunteer Fire Dept. He is survived by one son, Richard J. Burk of Valparaiso, Fl, survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Kathy B. and John R. Pennington of Lynchburg, Hazel Williams of Pearisburg and Mildred Burk of Princeton, WV, three grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, September 8, 2006 at the Givens Funeral Chapel in Pearisburg at 2:00pm with the Rev. Ronnie Mutter officiating with burial following in the Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends Thursday evening at the Givens Funeral Home from 6 – 7:30.
Eva Earnest Miller Litchfield
LITCHFIELD, EVA EARNEST MILLER, 75 of Pearisburg, VA passed away Tuesday night, September 19, 2006 in Carilion Giles Memorial Hospital in Pearisburg. Mrs. Litchfield was born on January 14, 1931 in Dryfork, VA and was a daughter of the late Gaylord T. and Cora Lynch Earnest. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick (Fred) H. Litchfield, III, two sisters, Bertha E. Moody, Shirley E. Smith and one brother, Gaylord T. Earnest, Jr. Mrs. Litchfield was the cafeteria supervisor for the Montgomery County Public Schools in Maryland for 21 years. She attended the Ingram Village Methodist Church in Pearisburg and helped her daughter deliver the Roanoke Times paper every morning for the last four years until two weeks ago. She is survived by one son, Thomas Jackson Turner of Pearisburg, two daughters, Gail and husband Robby Vanhoozer of Frederick, MD, Delores Miller Hopkins and Husband Herbie of Pearisburg, three grandchildren, Thomas Jackson Turner, Jr. of Gaithersburg, MD, Shane Allen Hopkins of Woodbine, MD, Heather Lynn Vanhoozer of Frederick, MD, and seven sisters, Ada Lee E. Ratliff, Virginia Earnest, Clara Earnest, Edith E. Wudarski, Hazel E. Eaton, Dorothy E. Holsenback all of Pearisburg and Margie E. and Joseph Bean of Brooksville, FL. Graveside funeral services will be conducted, Friday, September 22, 2006 at 1:00 at the Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg with the Rev. Cindy Baxter officiating. The family will receive friends at the Givens Funeral Home in Pearisburg Thursday evening from 6 – 8 pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Ingram Village Methodist Church c/o Mary Gay Davis, 201 Forest Hill Dr., Pearisburg. Mr. Blackburn was born on August 17, 1918 in Narrows, VA and was a son of the late William Roscoe Blackburn and Lottie King Blackburn Oberlin. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lucille Aust Blackburn. MANN, JAMES CLAUDE, 64 of Pearisburg, VA, passed away Saturday morning August 12, 2006 at his home. Mr. Mann was born on November 28, 1940 in Canebrake, WV and was a son of the late Albert Lee Mann, Sr. and Slyvia Swisher Mann. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by 2 brothers, David Darrell Mann and Ellis Eugene Mann. Mr Mann was a United States Marine veteran and was a former employee of Guardrail, Inc.
