Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

Dr. F. D. Morse, Jr.

MORSE, Jr., DR. F.D., age 78 of Pearisburg, VA died Wednesday, August 23, 2006, at his home in Tobaccoville, NC from metastatic cancer that had spread to the liver and abdominal wall. He had cared for a full schedule of patients in his Virginia dental practice ten days prior to his death, five days prior to his diagnosis. He was called of God to follow Jesus and thus was always prepared for death, as noted on his tombstone. He is survived by his beloved wife, Patsy A. Morse of Pearisburg, His daughter Pam Guy and her husband John Guy and their son Patrick Morse Guy of the home, his firstborn son Fortis Davis Morse and his wife Nancy Zink, MD of Portland, OR. He was predeceased by his parents, Ida Davis Morse and Frank D. Morse of Glen Lyn, VA. Dr. Morse was highly esteemed by family, friends, and the patients he treated with a friendly, down-home manner that demonstrated his sincere interest in them as people as well as patients. His daughter often felt that his waiting room was more like a gathering at a General Store, as folks would stop to talk even if they didn’t have appointments. He is already sorely missed. Funeral services will be conducted at the Givens Funeral Chapel in Pearisburg Sunday, August, 27, 2006 at 5:00pm with Bobby Slyvia and Franklin Zimmerman officiating with the eulogy being read by John Guy. Burial will follow in the Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends at the Givens Funeral Home Saturday evening from 5 – 8 pm.

Glenna Ellen Johnston Stafford

: GLENNA ELLEN JOHNSTON STAFFORD 91 years, 11 Months and 29 Days of Trigg, VA., died peacefully at her home on June 19,2006. She was born on June 21,1914 at Trigg the daughter of Charles F. and Bertie Parsell Johnston. She was preceded in death by her brother Buford W. Johnston and half-brother Roscoe Johnston. She was united in marriage on October 10,1937 to Martin L. Stafford who preceded her in death in 1975. To this union were born four children, three of whom survive namely: Gary (Gay) Stafford and Phyllis (Charles) Gordon of Trigg and Carole Ann (Pat) Eaton of Pearisburg. Her daughter Kaye Raynes passed on before her in 1998. She united with the Methodist Church early in life and was a member of Wesley’s Chapel United Methodist Church. She lived a Christian life of reverence and service to God and family. She will be remembered as a loving Mother, Grandmother and great-grandmother to her family. She is also survived by ten grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren, three nieces, two nephews and several cousins. Her funeral will be held Friday, June 23,2006 at 2:00 PM in the Wesley’s Chapel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Betty Roberts officiating with entombment in the Birchlawn Abbey, Pearisburg. The family will receive friends at the Givens Funeral Home, Pearisburg Thursday evening from 6 to 8 PM.

Cecil Lee Nester

NESTER, CECIL LEE, 60 of New Castle, VA passed away Thursday, June 29, 2006 at MCV Hospital in Richmond, VA. Mr. Nester was born on May 26, 1946 in Pulaski Co. VA and was a son of the late Ota Lee and Guida Dalton Nester. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Douglas Delano Nester and Thedford Nester. Mr. Nester served in the United States Marine Corp. from June 16, 1967 to June 18, 1970 and owned and operated Bent Tree Construction in New Castle. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Ann Nester of New Castle, two sons, Chadwick Lee Nester of California, Troy E. and Shona Farmer of Pulaski Co, one daughter Teresa Ann and Neal Clingenpeel of Bedford, two brothers, Talmadge Nester of Pulaski, Kemel Ray Nester of Pulaski, one sister, Virginia Smith of Pulaski and three grandchildren, Sarah Ann Clingenpeel, Kalla Neal Farmer and Bryce Nester. Graveside funeral services will be conducted Sunday, July 2, 2006 at 2:00 pm at the Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg with Tamera Simpkins officiating with full military honors conducted by the VFW Post # 6000 and American Legion Posts #311 & #68 following. The family will receive friends at the Givens Funeral Home in Pearisburg Saturday evening from 2 – 4pm and 6 – 8 pm.

Rev. Walter J. Vierling

VIERLING, REV. WALTER J., 91, of Pearisburg, entered the Church Triumphant on Friday, July 14, 2006, in Salem, VA. Rev. Vierling was born on Friday, June 6, 1915, in Brooklyn, NY, and was a son of the late Jacob Vierling and Augusta Geschwinder Vierling. Rev. Vierling served as a chaplain in the United States Navy for 22 years and as pastor at Messiah Lutheran Church in Urbana, OH, and Redeemer Evangelical Lutheran Church in Pearisburg. After his retirement, he served as a supply pastor in all the New River Valley’s Lutheran churches. He was a member of Redeemer Evangelical Lutheran Church in Pearisburg. Rev. Vierling volunteered at the Giles Health and Family Center, an intergenerational child/adult daycare program, where he read aloud to children and adults. He also read to a class of second graders at Macy McClaugherty School once a week. He was a member of the Pearisburg Lions Club. Rev. Vierling is survived by a daughter, Martha Corbin Vierling, two sons, W. Christian Vierling of Arlington, and Timothy Jacob Vierling and wife, Mary Jane of Pearisburg, five grandchildren, Elizabeth, Jacob, and Susan Vierling and Erica and Christopher Prenda, one great-grandchild, Raheem Prenda, and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. The service celebrating his entry into the Church Triumphant will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Pearisburg on Wednesday, July 19, 2006, at 2:00 p.m. with Bishop James Mauney, Rev. Richard Bansemer, Bishop Emeritus, and Pastor Linda Mitchell presiding. Burial will follow in the Birchlawn cemetery in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Givens Funeral Home.

Clinton Henson Buckland

BUCKLAND, CLINTON HENSON, age 86, of Radford, died Friday May 26, 2006, at the Carilion New River Valley Medical Center after a brief illness. He was a resident of Eggleston from 1942-2001. Mr. Buckland was born in Peterstown, W.Va. on November 3, 1919 and was a son of the late Neal Andrew Buckland and Barcia Ferguson Buckland. Besides his parents, Clinton was preceded in death by a brother, Theodore H. Buckland and a sister, Lucille B.Windley. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Elizabeth Barger Buckland of Radford, two daughters; Sandra B. Weeks and husband Ira S. Weeks of Radford, Rebecca B. Gaffney of Williamsburg, one brother, Donald A. (Corky) Buckland and wife Loretta L. Buckland of Ballard, W. Va., two sisters; Marie B. Tuggle of Peterstown, W.Va., and Mary Ellen Guynn and husband Marvin Guynn of Narrows. Also surviving are five granddaughters: Sheri W. Thompson and husband Curtis, of Roanoke, Lori W. Baughman and husband Tom, of Old Hickory, TN., Amy W. Duff and husband Kenny, of Heber City,UT., Tyler E. and Chelsea G. Gaffney of Williamsburg, VA., six great-grandchildren: Ben and Adam Thompson, Hunter and Ellie Duff, Holly and Matthew Baughman, and many beloved nieces and nephews. Mr. Buckland retired from the Celanese Corporation in 1981 after a 42-year employment. He continued in his retirement to do what he most enjoyed in life; pursue his love of training and showing Tennessee walking horses, maintaining his summer garden, and spending time each winter at his cabin on Fork Mountain with his treasured “bear-huntin’ buddies” and bear dogs. Mr. Buckland was a member of the Eggleston United Methodist Church since 1944, where he served as superintendent, adult Sunday School teacher, choir member, and lay leader. He was currently attending the Fairlawn United Methodist Church.He was very proud to have been a member of the Eggleston Masonic Lodge #309 AF&AM for over 60 years. He was also a member of the Royal Arch Chapter of Pearisburg for over 50 years. In his years as a Masonic member, he presided over more than 50 graveside Masonic funeral services, served as District Deputy Grand Master for several terms, served as Secretary, and also as Worshipful Master of the Eggleston Lodge #309 for many years. Mr. Buckland was a long-time member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Pearis Chapter #124, and served eight times as Worthy Patron. While living in Eggleston, he was also a member of the Eggleston Volunteer Fire Dept. and the Ruritan Club. He held the unofficial title of “Mayor of Eggleston.”Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, May 30, 2006, at 2:00 PM in the Pearisburg First United Methodist Church with The Rev. Betty Roberts and The Rev. Randy Morris officiating. Following the service, interment will be at Birchlawn Burial Park with Masonic Graveside Services conducted by the Eggleston Masonic Lodge # 309. The family will receive friends at the Givens Funeral Home on Monday evening from 6:00 to 9:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Eggleston United Methodist Church, c/o Mr. Gary Kerr, Eggleston, VA., 24086, or to the American Cancer Society. The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the doctors and PCU nursing staff of Carilion New River Valley Medical Center who gave such genuine and loving care to Mr. Buckland during his hospitalization. Their concern and tenderness toward him and this family was beyond the “call of duty.” They indeed held his hand and ours through such a difficult time, and will hold a place in our hearts forever.

Lorraine Fletcher Williams

WILLIAMS, LORRAINE FLETCHER of Pearisburg, VA passed away Monday, May 29, 2006 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke, VA. Mrs. Williams was born on April 3, 1922 in Pearisburg and was a daughter of the late James Arthur Fletcher and Martha Ratcliffe Fletcher. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Waldo E. Williams. Mrs. Williams retired as Deputy Clerk of Giles County Juvenile and Domestic Court. She was a member of the Pearisburg Christ Fellowship Church. She is survived by two sons, Gary W. Williams and wife Audrey of Smith Mountain Lake, Dale E. Williams and wife Sharon of Blue Ridge, five grandchildren, Gary Lee Williams, Lorraine Dillon and husband Malcolm, Heather Henderson and husband Patrick, Shannon Williams and SGT Joshua Williams, and two great grandchildren, Kelci and Abigail Dillon. Funeral services will be held at the Pearisburg Christ Fellowship Church at Thursday, June 1, 2006, at 1:00 pm with Pastor Greg Cox and Dr. J. Carl Rouintree officiating with burial following in the Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6 – 8 pm at the Pearisburg Christ Fellowship Church. Arrangements made by Givens Funeral Home in Pearisburg.

Glenn Cruise

CRUISE, GLENN, 80 of Pearisburg, VA passed away on Monday, June 5, 2006 at his home in Pearisburg. Mr. Cruise was born on June 9, 1925 in Clinchco, VA and was a son of the late Peter and Hester Moorefield Cruise. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Karen Cruise Newcomb and one son, David Cruise. Mr. Cruise was a retiree of the Giles County School System, a World War II Navy Veteran, and member of the Pearisburg Baptist Church where he had served as Deacon, Sunday School Teacher and Clerk. Mr. Cruise is survived by his wife of 56 years, Kathleen Beverly Cruise of Pearisburg, one son, Robert Cruise and his wife Jennifer of Springfield, two Daughters, Beverly Cruise Hueter and her husband Bill of Marietta, GA, Sara Cruise Grochowski and her husband Ted of Roanoke, VA., one sister, Eva Cruise of Martinsville, 8 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, June 8, 2006 at the Pearisburg Baptist Church in Pearisburg at 11:00am with the Rev. Jamie Hyden officiating with burial following in the Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends at the Givens Funeral Home Wednesday evening from 6 – 8 pm. If you wish, donations may be made to the Pearisburg Baptist Church.

Darrell Leaton Roberts

ROBERTS, DARRELL LEATON, 43 of Pearisburg, passed away Sunday evening, April 30, 2006 at Carilion Giles Memorial Hospital in Pearisburg. Darrell was born on April 26, 1963 in Pearisburg, was a 1981 graduate of Giles High Scholl and had worked at Wades Supermarket in Pearisburg for 11 years. He was also a member of the First Christian Church in Pearisburg and he was talented in his crafts, making miniature houses and churches for his family and friends. He leaves to cherish his memory, his mother, Elizabeth Marie Sartin Roberts of Pearisburg, his brother and sister-in-law, Billy Allen and Sheryl Nelson Roberts of Pearisburg, special friends, Bill and Peggy Hollar, Gary and Sue Walker, Rev. Bill Sleasman and Ginny, Rev. E.C. Redmond and Peggy, Lane and Lorraine Keffer, Greg Martin, Junior Neely and family, Jim Johnston and family, Dr. D. Scott Hayes and Staff, Lois Robinson and numerous other friends and relatives. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, May 5, 2006 at 11:00am at the Givens Funeral Chapel in Pearisburg with the Rev. Bill Sleasman and Rev. E.C. Redmond officiating with burial following in the Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends at the Givens Funeral Home in Pearisburg Thursday evening from 6 – 8.
