Billy Gene Ramsey

RAMSEY, BILLY GENE, 72, of Bedford, VA passed away Tuesday, May 16, 2006. Mr. Ramsey was born on September 29, 1932 in Cherokee, NC. Mr. Was Ramsey was an Air Force Veteran. He is survived by his long-time friend and companion of 23 years, M. Joann Munsey of Bedford. Survivors also include the following loved ones, Michael and Elise Munsey of Roanoke, D. Preston Munsey and Alexandra Viele of Roanoke, Kevin, Joanna, Lindsay and Alexander Merritt of Roanoke, Roberta Arthur of Bedford and Richie Turman of Bedford. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, May 18, 2006 at 2:00pm at Birchlawn Abbey in Pearisburg with Dr. Fred L. Austin officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:00pm Thursday, before the service at Birchlawn Abbey.

Eddie Mason Carr, Sr.

CARR, Sr., EDDIE MASON, 68 of Pearisburg, VA passed away Thursday, May 18, 2006 at Montgomery Regional Hospital in Blacksburg. Mr. Carr was born on November 23, 1937 in Staffordsville, VA and was a son of the late Mason Bane Carr and Ida Semones Carr. Mr. Carr graduated from Eggleston High School in 1956 and served 6 years in the U.S. Army National Guard. Mr. Carr retired in 1992 from Celanese Fibers in Narrows with 37 years of services, was a member of the Thessalia Methodist Church and was a past Master of Giles Masonic Lodge # 106 in Pearisburg. He is survived by his wife Patsy Morris Carr of Pearisburg, one son Eddie M. Carr, Jr. and his wife Linda of Salisbury, NC, one daughter Kathy Carr Clark and her husband Mark of Pulaski, two grandchildren, Matthew Clark and Marissa Clark of Pulaski, two aunts, Lenora Carr of Pearisburg, Mileta Sowers of Christiansburg and one uncle, Victor Semones of Parrot. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, May 22, 2006 at 11:00am at the Birchlawn Abbey in Pearisburg with the Rev. Brad Lewis officiating with entombment following in the Abbey. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 6 – 8 pm at the Givens Funeral Home in Pearisburg. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, that donations be made to the Bible Bus Fund of Giles County, or to the American Cancer Society/Relay for Life in his memory.

Maury C. Newton, Jr.

Maury Claiborne Newton, Jr., a longtime Cobb County Internist and Cardiologist, died Saturday at his home in Kennesaw. Born in 1927 in Roanoke, Virginia, Dr. Newton served in the United States Navy near the end of World War II. He graduated from Wake Forest University where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Kappa Alpha Fraternity and from the Medical College of Virginia. He joined his father in the general practice of medicine until his father’s death in 1961. Dr. Newton enjoyed two satisfying and highly respected careers, first as a country doctor in the small town of Narrows in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia from 1954 to 1973. After completing a fellowship in cardiology, he served on the staff of the University of Virginia Medical School as Assistant Professor of Medicine. In 1977, he joined the practice of his medical college classmate Dr. William Edward Holladay and was also a partner of Dr. Robert P. Coggins and Dr. George T. Mims. Dr. Newton practiced twenty-one years in Marietta before retiring in October 1998. Dr. Newton was instrumental in establishing the Cardiac Catheterization Lab at Kennestone Hospital and performed the first catheterization and the 10,000th procedure. While in practice, Dr. Newton was a fellow in the American College of Physicians, the American College of Cardiology, the American College of Chest Physicians, and was a member of the Society of Echocardiology. Dr. Newton is survived by his wife, Pamela Croy Newton of Kennesaw; a son, Maury Claiborne Newton III of Chesterfield, Virginia ; two daughters, Cynthia Chadwick, Moorpark, California and Lucy Maloney, Raleigh, North Carolina ; seven grandchildren, and a brother, Dr. Richard Milton Newton, Roanoke, Virginia. A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 14 at 7 p.m. at St. Catherine’s Episcopal Church, 571 Holt Road NE, Marietta, Georgia 30068. The family requests that memorial donations be made to the organ fund at St. Catherine’s Episcopal Church, 571 Holt Road NE, Marietta, Georgia 30868 or to Wellstar Hospice Home Care Fund, 4040 Hospital West Drive, Austell, Georgia 30106 or to Carilion Giles Memorial Hospital Foundation, 1 Taylor Avenue, Pearisburg, VA 24134. Mayes Ward-Dobbins Funeral Home in Marietta is in charge of arrangements.

Emma Frances Dunford Lafon

LAFON, EMMA FRANCES DUNFORD, 95, of Pearisburg, formally of White Gate, VA, died January 21, 2006 at Woodhaven Nursing Home, Montvale, VA. She was born in White Gate, VA., on January 18, 1911 and was a daughter of the late Charles Lee Dunford and Nancy Virginia Vance Dunford. Besides her parents She was preceded in death by her husband Robert Andrew Lafon, a daughter Clara Pauline Lafon Darden, two sisters, Margie Dunford Pickett, Fannie Mae Dunford and six brothers, Edgar Raymond Dunford, Carl Andrew Dunford, William Vance Dunford, Clay Mason Dunford, Joseph Elby Dunford and Robert Paul Dunford. Mrs. Lafon was a member of the Pearisburg Baptist Church. She is survived by one granddaughter, Rebecca Sue Darden of Appomattox, VA, a grandson, Timothy Alan Darden and his wife, Karen Sherwood Darden and their daughter Rachel Anne of Melba, VA, a brother, Roy Herman Dunford of Newport, a sister Virginia Dunford Hylton of Princeton, WV, and several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, January 24, 2006 at 11:00am at the Pearisburg Baptist Church with the Rev Lyle Mullins and Rev. Jamie Hyden officiating with entombment following in the Birchlawn Abbey. The family will receive friends at the Givens Funeral Home Monday evening from 6 – 8pm. Memorials may be made to the Pearisburg Baptist Church Building Fund or the Alzheimer’s Fund.

Guy Wilbur Tickle

TICKLE, GUY WILBUR, 71 of Pearisburg, VA went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 4, 2006 in New River Valley Medical Center in Radford, VA. Mr. Tickle was born on September 14, 1934 in Giles County and was a son of the late Walter and Lathie Fisher Tickle. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by 7 brothers and 1 sister. Mr. Tickle was a retired truck driver for Helig-Meyers in Pearisburg. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Tickle of Pearisburg, 1 daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca T and Jimmy Young of Pearisburg, 2 sons and daughters-in-law, Wendell and Chris Tickle of Pearisburg, Guy A. and Kim of Pearisburg, 8 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild and 2 special buddies Danielle and Autumn. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, April 8, 2006 at 11:00 am at the Givens Funeral Chapel with Dr. Fred L. Austin and Rev. Bill Sleasman officiating with burial following in the Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6 – 8 pm at the Givens Funeral Home in Pearisburg.

Mary Helen Myers Lafon

LAFON, MARY HELEN MYERS, 80 of Pearisburg, VA passed away Saturday night at Carilion Giles Memorial Hospital in Pearisburg. Mrs. Lafon was born on December 17, 1925 in Giles County and was a daughter of the late George Brachett and Maude Mae Smith Myers. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by nine brothers, two sisters and two sons, Randall Lee Lafon and Ernest (Sam) Raymond Lafon, Jr. Mrs. Lafon was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Pembroke. She is survived by one daughter, Imogene (Gene) L. Surratt of Alexandria, VA and one son and daughter-in-law, A.G. and Sheryl Lafon of Maryland, three grandchildren, Brian Lafon of TN, Alisha Lafon of Maybrook and Rachelle Lafon of Pearisburg. Graveside funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 18, 2006 at 11:00am at Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg and conducted by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 7 – 9 at the Givens Funeral Home in Pearisburg. Memorial contributions may be made to the Giles County Rescue Squad.

Beatrice Mae Dailey Thompson

THOMPSON, BEATRICE MAE DAILEY, 78 of Pearisburg, VA passed away, Friday evening, April 28, 2006 at her home. Mrs. Thompson was born on October 19, 1927 in Coretta, WV and was a daughter of the late Oscar Dailey, Sr. and Willa Crawford Dailey. Mrs. Thompson was a member of the Kentland Baptist Church in Kentland, MD. and the AARP. She is survived by her husband, James Edward Thompson, Sr. of Pearisburg, one son, James Edward Thompson, Jr. of Bowie, MD, one daughter, Carolyn Reynolds of Bowie, MD, one brother, Oscar Dailey of Jewell Ridge, VA, one half brother, Harold Dean Pruitt of Roanoke, one sister, Billy Jean Pruitt Christian of Jewel Ridge, VA and one grandson, Ricky Reynolds, III. Graveside funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, May 2, 2006 at 2:00 pm at Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg with the Rev. Shahn Wilburn officiating.

William Aryes Shrader

William Aryes Shrader, 78, of Silver Springs, Md., formerly of Pearisburg, Va., passed away March 6, 2006 at his home. Mr. Shrader was born in Pearisburg, Va. on February 24, 1928 and was a son of the late Fredrick and Lexie Raynes Shrader. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Bobby, Bo and Freddy Shrader; and a grandson, David Lee Shrader. Mr. Shrader was a World War II Army Veteran. He is survived by his son, Jimmy A. Shrader and Diane of Fruitland, Md.,; three grandchildren, Angie Stump, Valerie Cullen and Eric Lokey; five great-grandchildren, David Austin Shrader, Kelly and Courtney Cullen, Summer and Christopher Stump; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Marci and Jerry Marcelynas of Delaware, Alice Faye White of Arizona; special friends, Kathy and Doug Montgomery, Ronnie and Linda German; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, March 11, 2006 at Givens Funeral Chapel at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Bill Sleasman officiating with burial following in the Pleasant Hill Church cemetery in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the funeral home.

Mary Payne Givens

GIVENS, MARY PAYNE, 83 of Newport, VA passed away Saturday, March 11, 2006. Mrs. Givens was born on February 14, 1923 in Cabin Creek, WV and was a daughter of the late Frances Robert Payne, Jr. and Dora Kelly Payne. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel Wallace Givens and a brother, Dr. Frances Robert Payne, Jr. Mrs. Givens was a member of the First Christian Church in Newport. She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Mark Robert and Melodie Givens of Newport, one grandson, Daniel E. Givens and one Granddaughter Kelly Givens of Newport. A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 18, 2006 at 1:00pm at the First Christian Church in Newport. The family will receive friends Friday evening March 17, 2006 from 6 – 9 pm at the home of Mark and Malodie Givens in Newport. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the First Christian Church in Newport, or to a charity of your choice.

Paul Garnett Deck

DECK, PAUL GARNETT, 91 of Pearisburg, VA, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 26, 2006 at the Brian Center in Fincastle, VA. Mr. Deck was born on February 16, 1915 in Staffordsville, VA and was a son of the late Charles A. and Lelia Meadows Deck. Besides his parents, Paul was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred (Sue) DeBusk Deck and his grandson, Ronn Romano, three brothers and four sisters. Paul was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Pearisburg, a member of the Pop Finley Bible School Class, a retired U.S. Postal Carrier in Pearisburg, a member of Giles Lodge # 106 A.F. & A.M., Kazim Shrine Temple and the Giles Shrine Club. He is survived by his daughter Carolyn Sue Romano of Buchanan and several nieces and nephews including Norman Deck and his wife Diane of Staffordsville. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 1 2006 at 11:00am at the First United Methodist Church in Pearisburg with the Rev. Dale Wyrick and Dr. Fred L. Austin officiating with burial following in the Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends at the Givens Funeral Home Friday evening from 6 – 8 PM.

Debra Lynn Davis

DAVIS, DEBRA LYNN, 38 of Narrows, VA passed away Friday, February 24, 2006 at Carilion Giles Memorial Hospital in Pearisburg. Debra was born in Amarillo, TX on February 16, 1968 and was a daughter of Donald K. (Pee-Wee) Davis, Sr. and the late Mary Lou Viars Davis. Debra is survived by her father, two sisters and one brother-in-law, Denise and Bobby Meadows of Narrows, Diann Myers of TN, one brother, Donald K. Davis, Jr. of Ripplemead, 4 nieces, Ashley, Dawn, Brittney and Fawntain Myers, one nephew, Daniel Defibaugh and 2 great nieces, Kristen Williams and Haley Niece. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, February 27, 2006 at 2:00pm at the Givens Funeral Chapel in Pearisburg, VA with the Rev. Jimmy Blankenship officiating with entombment following in the Birchlawn Abbey in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends at Givens Funeral Home Sunday evening from 6 – 8 pm.
