LEEDY, Mary Chestina

Mary Chestina Leedy, 80, of Roanoke, went to be with her Lord on Saturday, February 28, 2004. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy C. Leedy, sisters, Nita Eisenhart, Dorothy Dyer, Blanche Savoie and Ramona Barker. She is survived by her children, Charlene Peters and husband Wayne, Roy "Speedy" Leedy, Jr., Robin McKee and husband David, Dawn Ferris and husband Gary; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brothers, Tom Burnette of Axton, Va., Robert Burnette of Charlotte, N.C.; sisters, Willie Draper of Martinsville, Va., Margie Burnette of North Carolina, Lacy Parker of Norfolk, Va., Shelby Koontz of Virginia Beach; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 3, 2004 at Oakey's North Chapel with the Rev. Frank W. Feather officiating. Interment icon will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Oakey's North Chapel. The family would like to give special thanks to the staff at Magnolia Ridge and Good Samaritan Hospice. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Good Samaritan Hospice. BLANKENSHIP, Doye Lee

Doye Lee Blankenship, 52, of Glade Hill, went to be with the Lord Sunday, February 29, 2004. A peaceful death after a lengthy illness. He was preceded in death by his father, Lindy (Bunny) Blankenship. He was a U.S. Army Veteran. He is survived by his wife, Jennifer Blankenship; sons, Issac Blankenship and Doye Lee Blankenship II; a daughter and son-in-law, Sharyn Ann and Brad Manville; his mother, Shirley Ann Blankenship; step-father, Bruce Mangum; a brother and sister-in-law, James and Phyllis Blankenship, and their children; and a sister, Debra Ann Wynne and her daughter, Summer; best friends, Steve and Loretta Mason; and a number of nieces and nephews. The funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 3, 2004 at Crafts United Methodist Church with the Rev. Larry Mann officiating. Interment icon to follow in the family cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, and at other times at the home of Joanne Mason, 178 Crafts Lane, Glade Hill. BUCKLE, Donald Miller

HOOVER, Lawrence Jay

Lawrence Jay Hoover, 31, of Virginia Beach, formerly of New Castle, passed away April 14, 2004. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Lawrence J. Hoover. He is survived by his parents, Barry Hoover of New Castle and Sinual Oltmans of Pullyallup, Wash.; grandmother, Ruth A. Hoover of New Castle; aunt, Barbara Hoover-Bergey of Virginia Beach; sisters, Barbara Reid of Camp LeJune, N.C.., Kim Hester of Douglasville, Ga., and Ruth Hoover of New Castle; and brother, Barry Hoover of New Castle. Graveside services will be held 3 p.m. Thursday, April 22, 2004 at Huffman Memorial Park with Dr. Ernie Johnson officiating. Arrangements by Paitsel Funeral Home, New Castle.

HUFFMAN, Roy G.

Roy G. Huffman, 65, of Roanoke, previously Annandale, Va., passed away Tuesday, April 20, 2004 from ALS and Alzheimer's disease. A native of Hyden, Ky., he is survived by his wife, Nancy, formerly Nancy Patterson of Salem; a daughter, Kathleen Huffman of Colorado Springs, Colo.; step-children, Lynn Ghandi of Glendale, Calif., Charles Newton of South Jordan, Utah, and Johnathan Weston of Sacramento, Calif.; and a brother, John P. Huffman of Ft. Worth, Texas. Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, April 23, 2004 at the Roanoke Second Ward Chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Cotton Hill Rd., Roanoke. Burial will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. Donations in Roy's name may be made to Good Samaritan Hospice, 3825- A Electric Rd. SW, Roanoke, Va. 24018 or the Muscular Dystrophy Association, 4502 Starkey Rd. SW, Roanoke, Va. 24014. RUTHERFORD, Carl David, II

Carl David Rutherford, II, 18, of Roanoke, passed away Monday, April 19, 2004 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Surviving is his mother, Tamara Lawson of Roanoke; father, Carl David Rutherford of Tuscaloosa, Alabama; sisters, PhaBeanna Lawson of Roanoke and BreAnna Lawson of Christiansburg; grandparents, Hersel and Joyce Lawson of Christiansburg; godparents, Jane and Bill Bailey; uncles and aunts, Hersel and Kathy Lawson, Anthony and Carol Lawson, Sherri Woodfin, and Linda Rutherford; half-sister, Stormy Barbour; half-brother, Christopher Hutchison; special friends, Randy Boyd, Alita and Calvin Ashe; adopted grandmother, Helen St. John; and a number of other relatives and friends. A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday, April 22, 2004 in East Hill cemetery, Salem, by the Rev. Susan Bentley. KINCER, Stephen Malcolm

Stephen Malcolm Kincer, 80, of Roanoke, passed away Monday, April 19, 2004 after a long illness with Huntington's disease. He was predeceased by a son, Mark Kincer. During World War II, he served as a pilot in the U.S. Air Corps. He was retired from the Burrough's Corporation. Mr. Kincer was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Jean Candler Kincer; a son, Todd C. Kincer and his wife, Susan, of Fort Sheridan, Ill.; a daughter-in-law, Vickie T. Kincer of Hardy; and two brothers, Cecil O. Kincer of Florida and Randolph Kincer of Maryland. Memorials may be made to the Huntington Disease Society at www.hdsa.org. A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Sherwood Memorial Park. The Rev. Donna Hopkins Britt will officiate. Military Honors will be conducted by the U.S. Air Force. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Oakey's North Chapel, 362-1237.

SMITH, Virginia Crooks

Virginia (Ginny) Crooks Smith, 79, of Roanoke, Virginia, passed away peacefully Sunday, April 18, 2004, surrounded by her family. Ginny was born in Eustis, Florida, on January 21, 1925. She was a loving mother, wife, grandmother and dear friend to many. Ginny's faith, generosity and warm sense of humor will be remembered by many. After attending Stetson University, she taught second grade in her tome town of Eustis. She and her husband moved to west Palm Beach where they raised their two daughters until their move to Roanoke in 1972. She was a faithful member of St. James Episcopal Church and an award winning Avon representative. She is preceded in death by her husband, George B. Smith, Jr.; and three sisters, Audrey Conk, June Adair and Ruth Wallis. She is survived by her loving daughters, Carmen Clower and Virginia Price and their husbands, Tim Clower and Tommy Price; her loving grandchildren, Josh and Jennifer Price of Hampton, and Carrie and Amanda Clower of Roanoke; her sister, Carmen McQuillen of Zellwood, Florida; and numerous nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held Thursday, April 22, 2004 at Oakey's North Chapel at 1 p.m. with Chaplain Mike Steryous officiating. the family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. James Episcopal Church or to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation. The family would like to express their deepest appreciation to the staff of Our Lady of the Valley - Sullivan Center, an the many friends for their thoughts, prayers and gifts from the heart. SPICER, Augustus M., Sr.

Augustus M. Spicer, Sr., 37, of Roanoke went to be with the Lord on Saturday, April 17, 2004. Those left to cherish his memory are his devoted mother and father, Serena S. and William R. Austin of Roanoke; one daughter, Shaquan; three sons, Augustus Jr., Christopher and Camon all of Roanoke; one brother, Antonio Wm. B. Spicer Sr. of Enfield, Conn.; a loving brother-in-law, Blake Taylor of Roanoke; five aunts and four uncles, Theresa (William) Shepherd, Barbara Fraizer of Lenior, N.C., Dorothy King of Columbus, Ohio, Belinda (Larry) Jeffries of Roanoke, David (Delores) Spicer and William R. Nash both of Columbus, Ohio; one niece, Erika; three nephews, TJ, Nathan and Marcus of Enfield, Conn.; a host of cousins and many special friends; and his estranged wife, Leslie Spicer of Roanoke. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Baptist Church, Salem. The Rev. Adrian Dowell will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service. THOMAS, Edna Marie Hutchens

Edna Marie Hutchens Thomas, 81, of Roanoke, passed away Monday, April 19, 2004. Born May 16, 1922 in Roanoke, Edna was the eldest daughter of John I. Hutchens and Annie Hunley Hutchens. She is also predeceased by brothers, Jack Hutchens and David Hutchens. She is a charter member of Grandview Heights Church of the Nazarene, where she was an active member until her recent illness. Edna was one of God's cheerful givers, always giving of herself and her possessions. She loved sharing her talents and her love through the years. She was a member of the Edgewood Extension Homemakers, where she learned to make crafts and meals for her family and neighbors. Her love for veterans was shown by her active participation in the Veterans of Foreign Wars #1264 Auxiliary, where she currently served as Vice President. She was also president of the organization in 1996. Edna is also a Life Member and Past Commander of the Disabled American Veterans H.H. MacKenzie Unit #3. She spent countless hours volunteering for the organizations and the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical enter and Virginia Veterans Care Center. She has also been a member of the Women of the Moose, AmVets and American Legion. She is survived by her sisters and brothers-in-law, Ruby H. and Ralph Shelor, Virginia H. and Fred Shiplett, and Mildred H. Newby; brothers and sisters-in-law, James C. and Charlotte Hutchens, and Billy and Katherine Hutchens; and numerous nieces and nephews. She leaves to cherish her memory her loving caregivers, Nancy and Paul Brown, and David and Debra Burgess. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday, April 22, 2004 at Lotz Salem Chapel with the Rev. Dill and the Rev. David C. Burgess officiating. Interment icon will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park with V.F.W. Post #1264 conducting military rites. The family will receive friends 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with DAVA Unit #3 holding a special service during visitation. Memorials may be made to the church or a charity of your choice. Arrangements are being handled by Lotz Funeral Home, Salem.

WAGNER, Mildred E.

Mildred E. Wagner, of Roanoke, Virginia, born December 14, 1920, died April 15, 2004. She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Edna Dempsky and her husband, Donald L. Wagner. Survivors include her sons Gary L. Wagner (Marsha Schreiber) of Roanoke, Va., and David P. Wagner (Christine Adams) of Huron, Ohio; two sisters, Pearl Karkau and Helen Schulz, both of western New York; and a brother Norman (Betty) of Birmingham, Ala.; as well as five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two foster grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was a member of Westhampton Christian Church. A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Westhampton Christian Church, 2515 Grandin Road, Roanoke, Va. 24015.

WEAVER, Florence Oneida

Florence Oneida Weaver, 94, of Roanoke, went to be with her Lord, Tuesday, April 20, 2004. She was born November 11, 1909, a daughter of the late Osborn D. and Mary Florence Kingery Hartman. She was married to John Jack Weaver who preceded her in death on October 4, 1977. Two sister, Hazel Gearheart and Ruby Blancher and two brothers, Charles and Frank Hartman, also preceded Mrs. Weaver in death. She was a member of the Red Hill Baptist Church and had worked as a reel operator for American Viscose. She is survived by one son, Jack D. Weaver of Roanoke, three grandchildren, Regina Weaver Stacy, Jackie Weaver Burr, and Michael McFalls. Also surviving are six great-grandchildren. A service celebrating Florence's life will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 22, 2004 at the Lotz Roanoke Chapel officiated by the Rev. James Jordan. Interment icon will follow in Bandy cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 4 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Arrangements are being handled by Lotz Roanoke Chapel, 1001 Franklin Road, SW, Roanoke, Va.

ADKINS, Ethel Folden

Ethel Folden Adkins, 97 of Bedford, passed away in a local nursing home on Friday, April 16, 2004. She was born November 15, 1906 in Bedford County, a daughter of the late Bruce Folden and Etta Parker Folden. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Adkins; two brothers, Luther and Herman Folden; three sisters, Mary Burnette, Sarah Chandler and Lillian Bruce; and a daughter-in-law, Kathryn Gibbs Adkins. She was a retired nurse at the Bedford County Nursing Home and was a member of the Faith Life Baptist Church, Montvale. She is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Floyd Adkins of Winter Park, Fla., and Nelson and Mildred Cheek Adkins of Blue Ridge; one granddaughter, Sandra Adkins Soule and her husband William Soule of Westchester, Pa.; two great-grandchildren, Owen Soule and Erin Gardner; and a special friend, Shelly Hall. Funeral service will be conducted on Thursday, April 22, 2004 at 11 a.m. from the Updike Funeral Chapel, Bedford by the Rev. Johnny Basham. Interment icon will follow in the Virginia Memorial Park. Brenda Joan Fonseca, 22, of Christiansburg died, Monday, April 19, 2004. She was born in Radford, Virginia on August 7, 1981. Brenda was happy and full of life. She and Ruben were expecting their first child in September. Words can never express how much she will be missed. She is survived by her husband, Ruben Fonseca of Christiansburg; mother and stepfather, Janet and Steve Shouse of Christiansburg; two sisters, Danielle Helm and Cassandra Helm, both of Christiansburg; grandparents, Roy and Brenda Gerberich of Shawsville; father-in-law, Rene Fonseca and Ignasia Fonseca, of Roanoke; mother-in-law, Irene Fonseca, of Houston, Texas; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Rene Fonseca, Jr. and Marla Fonseca, Robert Fonseca and Angie Fonseca; stepbrothers, Julian, Eric and Aurelio Lemon; aunts Connie Cox and Sandy Light; nieces and nephews Ashley Light, Angela Light, Matthew Fonseca, Julia and Miguel Fonseca. HALL, Fred Joe

Fred Joe Hall, 86, of Robinson Tract Road, Pulaski, Va., died early Sunday morning, April 18, 2004, in the Pulaski Community Hospital. He was born in Pulaski, Va. on March 3, 1918, and was the son of the late John Foy Hall and Mary Jane Black Hall. He was also preceded in death by six brother, Ernest, Robert, Virgil, Ray, T. Adair, and McGill Hall; and by three sisters, Nellie Smith, Louise Reese, and Eunice Moore. He was a retired building contractor in Pulaski. Mr. Hall was a veteran, having served in the United States Army during World War II. Mr. Hall was discharged with the highest honor of Staff Sergeant in Battery C., 420th Armored Field Artillery Battalion and where he was the Squad Leader. Mr. Hall received the Purple Heart. His survivors include a sister, Hazel Unger of Laurel, Md.; (special son)/great-nephew and spouse, Michael Wayne and Marian Hall of Pulaski; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. from Stevens Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Darlene Marshall officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood cemetery with Pulaski VFW Post #1184 conducting the military graveside rites. Visiting will be Wednesday, where the family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes that memorials be made to the Pulaski County Humane Society. The family will be meeting at the residence of Mike and Marian Hall, 512 Lafayette Ave., Pulaski. Arrangements by Stevens Funeral Home, Inc., Pulaski, Va.

Norma Jean Hawks, 68, of Christiansburg passed away Sunday, April 18, 2004. Survivors include her special lifelong companion, Floyd E. Burlingame; children, Paul Morgan, Margaret J. Morgan and Marcia J. Hampton; stepdaughter, Debbie Drinkard; three grandchildren; 1 great grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.
