Rhudy Vass, 76, of Hillsville, Va. passed away Tuesday, April 20, 2004 at his home. Mr. Vass is survived by his wife, Callie Vass of the home; children and spouse, William Randolph Vass, Carolyn and Tommy Alderman, all of Hillsville, and Patricia Nelson of Galax; sister and brother-in-law, Geneva and Custis Webb of Hillsville; sister-in-law, Mava Vass of Hillsville; five grandchildren, Jeffrey and Darlene Vass, Scott and Allison Alderman, Craig and Tracy Bowman, Amy and Mark Turbyfill, and Travis and Danielle Alderman; and eight great-grandchildren. Mr. Vass was predeceased by his parents, Rufus Early and Anna Laura Nester Vass and his brother, William Hassell Vass. Funeral services Thursday, April 22, 2004 at 1 p.m. at the Crooked Oak Baptist Church with the Rev. Oscar Hill and the Rev. Bobby Davis officiating. The body will lie in state one hour preceding the service. Burial will be at the Crooked Oak cemetery. Masonic rites by Hillsville Masonic Lodge 193 AF & AM will be conducted at the cemetery. Rozika Hill Cossey, of San Jose, Calif., formerly of Roanoke, passed away April 8, 2004. She was preceded in death by her father, Thomas Stott; her step-father, William F. McCall; son, Robert Lee Hill; and half-sister, Paulette M. Marthinuss. Surviving are her mother, Addie C. McCall; daughters and son-in-law, Shelia Hill of Calif., Pam Hill of Charlotte, N.C., and Deloris Guilliams and husband, Ernie, of Vinton, Va.; son and daughter-in-law, Ray and Nancy Thomas; half-brother, Darrell W. McCall; grandchildren, Tony and Joel Briceno, Calif., Tiffany Schmidt, Brandi and Lindsey Guilliams of Vinton, and Mark, Rachel, and Leah Thomas of Delaware; and numerous great-grandchildren. Arrangement were by the Neptune Society Crematory, San Jose, Calif. A memorial service in Roanoke is planned for a later date.
MOORE, Charles
Charles (Don) Moore, 81, passed away Monday, April 19, 2004. Born in Long Branch, Ky., he moved to this area in 1994 from Virginia. He was a Methodist, a partner in an engineering supply company, and an Army veteran from 1942 until 1946, participating in WWII and again from 1950 until 1951, participating in the Korean Conflict. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Virginia; sons, Tony, Tommy and Michael; daughter, Dawn Lopez; sister, Jean Slaughter; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Heart Assoc. Visitation will be April 23, 2004 at 11 a.m. with funeral services to follow at 12 noon, both at Hillsboro Memorial Funeral Home, Brandon, Fla.
OLER, Randall Raymond
SFC Randall Raymond Oler, 43, of Fort Bragg, NC, died Thursday, April 15, 2004 in Womack Army Hospital, Fort Brag, NC. He was born August 29, 1960 in Morristown, TN, a son of Franklin and Mary Lou Oler. Active in the US Army for the past 24 years, he was a paratrooper and jump master in the U.S. Army Special Forces Unit. Among other awards, he was the recipient of the Legion of Merit and a Purple Heart. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Pamela B. Oler; three sons, F. Ryan Oler and Andrew C. Oler, both of Bedford, VA and Zachary J. Oler of Fayetteville, NC; three daughters, Kelsey L. Oler of Bedford, Jessica J. McReynolds and Katelyn N. Oler, both of Fayetteville, NC; and a twin brother, Richard Oler of Morristown, TN. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, April 23, 2004 at the Mayes Mortuary Chapel, Morristown, TN. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 22, 2004 at Mayes Mortuary. Burial will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 27, 2004 in Arlington National cemetery, Arlington, VA.

Wallace Samuel Gregory of Roanoke, died at the age of 81. He served in World War II in Europe and the Pacific. He was retired from Woods Brothers Coffee Company after 50 years of service. He is the son of Joseph D. and Bessie Gregory. preceded in death by one sister, Helen Flippen; four brothers, Charlie, Robert, Julian and Vernon. He is survived by his wife, Gernell "Nell" Martin Gregory; one son, Lynn Martin Gregory and wife, Carolyn of Roanoke; stepdaughter, Dorris Campbell Fox and husband Ron of New York; one grandson, Erick John Gregory, Roanoke; one greatgrandson, Wade Justice Gregory, Tazewell; three sisters, Hazel Hodges and husband Harold of Vinton, Juanita Mitchell and husband, Dewey, both of Roanoke, Connie Thomas and husband Randy, Glenvar; two brothers, Melvin Gregory and wife Peggy, of Vinton Ray Gregory and wife Jean of Bassett; three sisters-in-law, Betty Gregory of Roanoke, Ruby Gregory, of Burlington,N.C., Ann Gregory Roanoke. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday from Oakey's South Chapel with Pastor Timothy Anderson officiating with burial to follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. Ola Ludwick Owen Henley, (Dolly), 90, of Roanoke, passed away on Monday, April 19, 2004. She was predeceased by her husbands, Adam T. Owen and O.D. Henley, and five sisters. She was a former member of Belmont United Methodist Church. She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Donald T. and Virginia Owen of Roanoke, Glenn P. and Annabel Owen of Roanoke; daughters and sons-in-law, Georgie Owen and Hugh E. Johnson of Vinton, Mary Owen and Steven Minton of Martinsville, Martha Owen and Rev. Richard Wilhelm of Mt. Dora, Fla., Louellen Owen and Larry Nichols of Roanoke; 18 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 21, 2004 at Oakey's North Chapel with Rev. Richard D. Wilhelm, Rev. Jerry Gray and Rev. Cameron Dahl officiating. The interment will be private. Virginia (Ginny) Crooks Smith, 79, of Roanoke, Virginia, passed away peacefully Sunday, April 18, 2004, surrounded by her family. Ginny was born in Eustis, Florida, on January 21, 1925. She was a loving mother, wife, grandmother and dear friend to many. Ginny's faith, generosity and warm sense of humor will be remembered by many. After attending Stetson University, she taught second grade in her tome town of Eustis. She and her husband moved to west Palm Beach where they raised their two daughters until their move to Roanoke in 1972. She was a faithful member of St. James Episcopal Church and an award winning Avon representative. She is preceded in death by her husband, George B. Smith, Jr.; and three sisters, Audrey Conk, June Adair and Ruth Wallis. She is survived by her loving daughters, Carmen Clower and Virginia Price and their husbands, Tim Clower and Tommy Price; her loving grandchildren, Josh and Jennifer Price of Hampton, and Carrie and Amanda Clower of Roanoke; her sister, Carmen McQuillen of Zellwood, Florida; and numerous nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held Thursday, April 22, 2004 at Oakey's North Chapel at 1 p.m. with Chaplain Mike Steryous officiating. the family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. James Episcopal Church or to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation. Ethel Folden Adkins, 97 of Bedford, passed away in a local nursing home on Friday, April 16, 2004. She was born November 15, 1906 in Bedford County, a daughter of the late Bruce Folden and Etta Parker Folden. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Adkins; two brothers, Luther and Herman Folden; three sisters, Mary Burnette, Sarah Chandler and Lillian Bruce; and a daughter-in-law, Kathryn Gibbs Adkins. She was a retired nurse at the Bedford County Nursing Home and was a member of the Faith Life Baptist Church, Montvale. She is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Floyd Adkins of Winter Park, Fla., and Nelson and Mildred Cheek Adkins of Blue Ridge; one granddaughter, Sandra Adkins Soule and her husband William Soule of Westchester, Pa.; two great-grandchildren, Owen Soule and Erin Gardner; and a special friend, Shelly Hall. Funeral service will be conducted on Thursday, April 22, 2004 at 11 a.m. from the Updike Funeral Chapel, Bedford by the Rev. Johnny Basham. Interment

Willie Cundiff Spradlin, 88, of Moneta, died Saturday, April 17, 2004, at Bedford Memorial Hospital. She was born in Bedford County on January 18, 1916 a daughter of the late Joseph Harrison Cundiff and Maude Bell Lynch Cundiff. She was the widow of James Jackson "Jack" Spradlin and was a member of Flint Hill Baptist Church. In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by her brothers, Davis M. Cundiff, Gilbert Cundiff, Joe Cundiff, Jr. and her sister, Ethel C. Hurt. She is survived by four sisters-in-law and several nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 21, 2004, at Flint Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Joey McNeill and the Rev. Grady Dickens officiating. He was born in Montgomery County, Va. on September 2, 1912 to the late Harry Giles and Etta Shaver Henderson. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Fay Tate Henderson, and two brothers, Julian "Dude" Henderson and Paul Henderson. He is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, R.W. She was the daughter of the late Ike and Mattie Carper and was preceded in death by her husband, Von W. Moody, Jr., and a brother, Garland Carper of Roanoke. She was a life-long member of the First United Methodist Church. Her survivors include a sister, Iris C. Miller of Pulaski, brothers, Bill Carper of Pulaski, Dean Carper and Ike Carper, both of Roanoke; brother-in-law, Bill Moody of Roanoke; children, Susanne M. Whillhite of Kennesaw, Ga., Von W. Moody, III (Buck) of Charlotte, N.C.; Bill Dean Moody of Riner; and Rich Moody of Pulaski; seven loving grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; and special angels, Senita Haga and Ann Fawcett.
