Mildred Irene Pierson Jones, 77, of Wirtz, passed away Wednesday, April 14, 2004. She was born August 3, 1926 in Lynn, Indiana. Preceding her in death was her step-father, B.D. Helton and mother, Edna Leora Truman Helton. Her husband, Douglas Randolph Jones, also preceded her in death. Surviving are daughter, Doris L. Jones of Wirtz; four sons, Robert Jones and wife, Robin, of Wirtz, Donny Jones and wife, Doris, of Wirtz, Danny Jones and wife Linda, of Bedford County and D. Gene Jones and wife, Debbie, of Roanoke; five grandchildren, Gary Wayne Jones and wife, Leslie, of Niantic, Connecticut, John David Whitney of Roanoke, Sharon Burks and husband, Darryl, of Roanoke, Brenda Kay Arnold of Wirtz, and Kathryn Lynn Hartman and husband, Dale, of Callaway; six great-grandchildren; two uncles, Cecil Truman and wife, Irene, of Hardy and Milton Truman of Hardy; a special first cousin (she was like a sister) Mary Nichols of Pennsylvania; sister-in-law, Inez Altizer of Bedford County; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Friday at Lotz Vinton Chapel with the Rev. Bonny Dillon officiating. Interment

DALTON, Hattie Velma
Hattie Velma Dalton, 100, formerly of Draper, Virginia, passed away Wednesday, April 14, 2004 at the Highland Ridge Rehabilitation Center, Dublin. Born November 19, 2003 in Dugspur, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Taliaferro and Orlelia Elizabeth Alderman Dalton. Two sisters, Mrs. Daisy D. Harmon and Miss Lydia Dalton, and two brothers, Obie S. Dalton and Ray Edward Dalton, Sr. also preceded her in death. She was a retired schoolteacher having taught school for many years in Draper, Collinsville, and Woodbridge, Virginia. She was a graduate of Radford University and the National Business College. She had been a member of the Draper Christian Church and the First Christian Church, Pulaski. She was also a member of the Republican Women's Club, the Retired Teachers Association and Draper Homemakers Club. Surviving are several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, 2 p.m. at Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski with Rev. Randy Winn officiating. Interment
will follow at the Draper cemetery, Draper. Visitation will be Saturday afternoon from 1 p.m. until time of service at Bower Funeral Chapel, 1631 Bob White Blvd., Pulaski.

Edith W. Gillespie, 71, of Christiansburg, died Thursday, April 15, 2004 at Radford Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was born in Fagg, Virginia on September 2, 1932 to me late Oakley and Macie Bryant Wheeling She is preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Cecil Gillespie and two sisters, Maxie Allen and Helen Trump. She is survived by her daughters, Joyce Hodge, Debra Burleson and Norma Dowdy, all of Christiansburg; son, Melvin Gillespie, Jr. of West Virginia; sisters, Christine Akers, Treva Martin and Reba Scott, all of Christianburg; brother, Buford Wheeling of Christiansburg; ten grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a special brother in the Lord, Sam Jones. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lorean McAlexander; five brothers, Wrest, William, Ballard, Chris and General McAlexander; seven sisters, Ida Bolt, Gracie Quesenberry, Dollie McDaniel, Gay Hylton, Minnie Hylton, Lillie McPeak and Dovie Sutphin. He is survived by three sons, Cleat McAlexander of Woolwine, Dewey McAlexander of Stuart, and Davis McAlexander of Collinsville; two daughters, Ruby M. Cooper of Critz and Beatrice McAlexander of Patrick Springs; one sister, Rosie Childress of Christiansburg; nine grandchildren; on step-grandchild; eleven great-grandchildren; twelve step-great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. CONNER, L. Moir
Mr. L. Moir Conner, 81, of Stuart, died Thursday, April 15, 2004 at the R.J. Reynolds Patrick County Memorial Hospital in Stuart. He was born in Patrick County on October 23, 1922, and was the son of the late Posey J. and Mae Moran Conner. He was preceded in death by a brother, Leonard J. Conner. Mr. Conner is survived by his devoted wife of 58 years, Thelma F. Conner of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Hugh (Sonny) Smith of Roanoke; two granddaughters, Shannon Smith of Arlington and Whitney Smith of Roanoke; two great-grandsons, Steven and Shannon Webb of Roanoke; one sister, Lillian C. Turner of Woolwine; two brothers, M. Calvin Conner of Villa Hills, Kentucky and P.C. Conner of Elk Creek, Virginia; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Conner was a World War II veteran, serving four and a half years in the South Pacific campaigns of Guadalcanal, Bougainville and New Caledonia in the United States Army medical corp., and an additional four years in the Army Reserves. Mr. Conner was a well-respected lumber manufacturer known for his broad knowledge and honest practice of the lumber business and an owner/operator of Conner Brothers service station and saw service. His lifelong love of learning and concern for others made him a truly special person to all who knew him. Funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. Jack R. Foley on Sunday, April 18, 2004 at 3 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart. Burial will follow in Patrick Memorial Gardens with military rites by the Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard. James Edward "Eddie" Hodges, 45, of Cripple Creek, passed away Thursday, April 15, 2004. He attended Crocketts Chapel United Methodist Church and was a member of Good Times Cruisers Car Club. He was preceded in death by his father Buddy Hodges; a brother Phil Hodges, Jr.; and a sister Rhonda Kay Hodges. He is survived by his wife, Cindy Nester of Cripple Creek; son, Tyler Hodges of Cripple Creek ;mother, Dorothy Fisher Hodges of Speedwell; sister and brother-in-law, Karen H. and Paul Williams of Blountville, Tenn.; mother-In-Law, Helen Nester Thomas of Bedford; special sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Nancy and Danny Johnson of Bedford, nephews, Adam Williams of Blountville, Tenn., Dan Johnson of Seattle, Washington, and Shannon Johnson of Bedford; and several aunts and uncles also survive. Eddie will always be remembered for his love of family, friends, football and cars. He devoted many years to coaching his beloved Speedwell Tigers. From 1995 to 1998 his record was 34 games, 31 wins and 29 shutouts. Eddie had a special sparkle in his eye while restoring and driving his 57' Ford. We have been blessed with so many supportive friends throughout his long illness. Thanks to our church family, our State Farm family, our Social Security family, Jones, Jessie, Landon, Bill, Jeff, Ken, Barbara, Linda, D.L., Kelly, Fred, Daphne, Jock and Pam. Memorial service will be Sunday 2 p.m. in the Crocketts Chapel United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Ginny Tompkins, with the interment in the Mt. Hope United Methodist Church cemetery.
