TURNER, Geneva P.
Geneva P. Turner, sunrise September 23, 1915, sunset May 18, 2006. On Thursday, May 18, 2006, God summoned his blessed servant, Mother Geneva P. Turner, to her eternal rest. Geneva P. turner was born to the late James (Uncle Jim) and Estelle (Della) Perry on September 23, 1915 in Radford, Virginia. The youngest of five children, she received her formal education in the Radford school system. She was the widow of the late Frank Turner, brothers, Harry and Cornelius Hoskins, Leroy and Roscoe Perry predeceased Mother Turner. A lifelong member of First Baptist Church, Radford, Va., Sister Turner resided in Great Neck, N.Y. for twenty years, where she also worshipped (In watch-care) at Saint Paul's AME Zion Church. During the time at St. Paul's Sister Turner served as Chair of Women's Day for five years and for four additional years as Chair of the building committee. Upon her return to Radford, Sister Turner became active as a member of First Baptist Church. Sister Turner has served on the Women's Day Committee, Usher Board and Missionary Society and in 1994 Sister Turner was designated as "Mother of the Church" First Baptist Church. Mother Turner leaves as survivors, a son, the Rev. Howard L. Sheffey, Schenectady, N.Y.; a daughter, Barbara Brown, Radford; a niece, Barbara Perry Latten, Radford; three nephews, James, Donald and Ray Perry, Columbus, Ohio; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. The grandchildren are Debra Hendricks, Radford, Karen L. Rose and Gregory Patton, Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., Russell Patton, Las Vegas, Nevada, Stacy Sheffey, Kelley Sheffey and Renee Sheffey-Brown, Brooklyn, N.Y.; great-grandchildren are, Lamar Hendricks, Dublin, Va., Jonathan and Nicole Rose, Rancho Cucamonga and Michael Sheffey, Brooklyn, N.Y. Mother Turner has left a legacy of strong parenting, love of GOD, love for each other and serving GOD through serving our neighbors. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 23, 2006 at 1 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 1730 West Street, Radford, Va. The family will be receiving callers from noon to 1 p.m. Burial will be at the Sunrise Burial Park Fairlawn, Va. James (Jimmy) Dickenson, 53, of Virginia Beach, died Friday May 19, 2006 in Martinsville. Born on October 18, 1952 in Abingdon. He was the son of the late Thomas Q. Dickenson, Sr. and the late Doris Marie Mullins Dickenson. Jimmy was preceded in death by a brother T.Q. Dickenson, Jr. in 1986. He served in the U.S. Navy. Surviving are his brothers and sisters-in-law, Jeff and Patsy Dickenson of Martinsville and Steve and Judy Dickenson of Richmond; sister and brother-in-law, Becky Dickenson Hodges and Mike Hodges of Hendersonville, Tennessee; stepmother, Lucille Hickerson of Maysville, Ken.; stepsister, Karen Hall of Maysville, Ken.; and sister-in-law Patricia Thompson of Roanoke. Jimmy is also survived by nieces, Ashley, Stacey and Wendi and nephews, Michael, Eddie, Steve, Tommy and Micah. There are numerous aunts, uncles and cousins and special friend Patti Scherz. Thelma Conner Nicely, 87, of 1109 Richmond Street, Selma, Va., died Friday, May 19, 2006 at Liberty House Nursing Home, Clifton Forge. Born on July 24, 1918 in Rockbridge County, she was a daughter of the late John William and Easter Coffey Conner Calp. She worked as a nurses aide at the old C & O Hospital and was a member of the Selma Epworth United Methodist Church where she held many offices. She is survived by one daughter, Velma Musser and husband, Thomas of Greensboro, N.C.; one son, Wetzel E. Nicely of Selma; four sisters, Betty Smith of Roanoke, Bessie Mae Hays and Helen Ayers, both of Lexington and Anna Conner of Selma; one grandson, Travis Musser; of Greensboro, N.C. and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Herman Edgar Nicely, one daughter, Alyson Sue Nicely, one son, Clayton Lee Nicely, and four brothers, William, James, John and Clayton Conner. The funeral service will be held on Monday, May 22, 2006 at 7 p.m. at the Selma Epworth United Methodist Church with Rev. Clyde Weaver officiating. SAUNDERS, Rheta D.
Rheta D. Saunders died on May 18, 2006 at the Evergreens Nursing Home in High Point, North Carolina. She was the daughter of Walter and Florence Dynoske of Duquesne, Pennsylvania, and the sister of Ronald Saunders, all predeceased. She graduated from Duquesne High School in 1952 and was employed by U.S. Steel as a secretary shortly thereafter. She joined Eastern Air Lines as flight attendant, where she met her husband, Robert S. Saunders of Roanoke Virginia, who also worked for Eastern Air Lines. They were married
in 1957, and lived in Roanoke, Virginia until 1970, when they moved to High Point, North Carolina. After moving to High Point, she was employed by Prudential Insurance, Medicare Claim Division until her retirement in 1989. She was a founding member of the Tar Heel Needlework Guild and an early member of the Greensboro Quilters Guild, now known as the Piedmont Quilters Guild. She was preceded in death by her husband August 27, 1994. Surviving her are three children, Robert W. Saunders of Carrboro, North Carolina, Catherine Martin of Asheville, North Carolina and Ronald W. Saunders of Collierville, Tennessee; as well as five grandchildren, Jamie Saunders, Clarke Martin, Meg Saunders, Anne Saunders and John Saunders. The family will receive friends at Sechrest Funeral Service on East Lexington Ave., High Point, N.C. 27262, Saturday, May 27, 2006 from 2 to 4 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in High Point by Father Anthony J. Gilborges Q.S.F.S. on Saturday, June 3, 2006 at 10 a.m., and her ashes will be interred at a later date beside her husband at Sherwood Forest cemetery in Salem, Virginia. Mrs. Nadine Wimmer Vogel, 67, resident of Durham, N.C. passed away Saturday, May 20, 2006. She was born in Floyd County, Va., the daughter of L. Z. Wimmer and the late Harless Wimmer. Mrs. Vogel is also preceded in death by her husband, Walter R. Vogel and her mother and father-in-law, Fanny Hilscher Vogel and Anton Vogel. She retired from the Environmental Protection Agency and was a member of Mt. Sylvan United Methodist Church. Surviving are her daughter, Karen Reimer and husband, Tony of Wake Forest; two granddaughters, Ellyn Grace and Hannah Danielle Reimer; four sisters, Jeannette Burnside and husband Joe, Barbara Poff and husband David, Linda Rosenbloom and husband, Shelly, Amy Dawn Wimmer; a brother, Michael Wimmer and wife Melissa, all of Virginia; and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Mt. Sylvan United Methodist Church with Dr. Rev. Bill Snotherly and Rev. Bess Hunnings officiating. Terry Lynn Graves, 50, of Roanoke, peacefully departed this world in the company of close family on May 18, 2006. Terry was an employee of Kroger Company for over 20 years. He also spent 12 years working alongside his parents at the Graves family business, Valley Marine Center. When not working, Terry spent much of his time in his favorite place, the great outdoors. He enjoyed camping, canoeing, and fishing every chance he got. He was preceded in death by his mother, Sara Toney Graves. Terry is survived by his wife and best friend, Gail Stevens Graves of Roanoke; daughters, Celia Graves McAllister and Teri Lyne Graves of Botetourt; grandsons, William and Lennon McAllister; father and stepmother, Eddie Joe Graves, Sr. and Roswitha Graves of Jacksonville, Fla.; brother, Eddie Joe Graves Jr.; sister in-law, Sandy Graves; and nephew, Danny Graves of Roanoke; life long "brother", Jeff Sain and wife, Sharon; and special K-9 companion, Gracie. Terry L. Lucas, 88, of Roanoke, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, May 17, 2006. He was the son of the late Charles M. and Flora W. Lucas, and was also preceded in death by his sons, Kenneth E. and Richard G. Lucas; brothers, William, Howard, Lawrence, Douglas, and Warren Lucas; and a sister, Oneita Booker. Mr. Lucas served the Lord at New Hope Christian Church, and was retired co-owner of Lucas Brothers Garage and Luke's Wrecker Service. Surviving is his loving wife of 65 years, Mildred B. Lucas; son and daughter-in-law, Howard L. and Sue Lucas, Vinton; daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn L. and Carl V. Barker, Roanoke; daughter-in-law, Barbara T. Lucas, Roanoke; grandchildren, Terrie Philpott, Lisa Anderson, Melissa Lucas, Jennifer Chumley, Howard Lucas II, Kim Agner, Scott Barker, Stacy Boris, Ricky Lucas, and Jason Lucas; 13 great-grandchildren; sisters, Mary L. THOMAS, Alfred Victor Jr.
Alfred Victor Thomas, Jr. ("Vic Jr." "Little Vic"), 55, passed away unexpectedly and peacefully May 18, 2006. A local master builder and general contractor, Vic Jr. was the eldest son of Dorothy and the late state legislator Alfred Victor "Vic" Thomas, Sr. A licensed pilot and avid boater, Vic Jr. was known and loved as a man who walked his own path in his life with warmth, service, good humor and love for God, friends and family. He led the rebuilding efforts for reconstructing the family store on Tinker's Creek after the flood of '85. You could count on Little Vic to be there for you anytime with all his strength, wisdom, and heart. Vic felt a lifelong kinship to the ocean and beaches of South Carolina. A familiar and frequent figure at Smith Mountain Lake, Vic Jr. was also known for his rich laughter and enjoyment of social gatherings and fine cooking skills. Before karaoke was a popular pastime, Vic Jr. sang with easy confidence for others at parties. There was never anything average about Vic, he was not your average bear. Vic always blazed his own path, never a follower. He was a "Shining Star" right here on earth. As Vic Jr. has made his most perfect and important flight to be with his Lord and Savior, he will be greatly missed in his many roles in life. A loving eldest son, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, and steadfast, faithful friend to many, Vic Jr. was preceded in death by his father, Alfred Victor "Vic" Thomas on April 26, 2006. Also preceding Vic Jr. in death were his niece, Erica Rae Thomas; nephews, Cole and Samuel Thomas; brother-in-law, Keith Johnson; grandparents, Genevieve Nero and Ellis James Thomas, and William and Mae Lucas; uncles Gerald Lucas, Buddy Thomas, and Ronnie Thomas. Vic Jr. is survived by his beloved mother and best friend, Dorothy "Dot" Thomas. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters-in-law, Eric and Robin Thomas and Tom and Shari Thomas; his sister, Gen Johnson. Vic Jr.'s nephews, Brad Thomas, Andrew Johnson, and Will Thomas; and niece, Lilly Thomas also survive him. Vic Jr. also leaves behind cousins, aunts, uncles and many special and treasured life long friends. He enjoyed and looked forward to his daily telephone call with his cherished cousins, Pete and Carolyn Goria. Like his father before him, Vic Jr. lived life and had a fierce love for the Lord. Doris L. Wheeler, 97, of Roanoke, passed away Thursday, May 18, 2006. Mrs. Wheeler was a native of Roanoke, Va. and was a lifetime member of Christ Lutheran Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Oliver G. and Carrie Watkins Lane. Seven brothers and sisters; and two sons, John and Ronald Morrow, also preceded her. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Barbara Morrow; eight grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; plus two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. J. Carlton Bowles, 84, of Rocky Mount, passed away Friday, May 19, 2006 following a courageous battle with cancer. He was born April 15, 1922 in the Scruggs community of Franklin County. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Thomas Bowles and Ora Hubbard Bowles; brother, Shannon H. Bowles; half brothers, Clyde, Alonza, and Raymond Bowles; half sisters, Ola Brown, Alma Moran, Vivian Carter, and Gracie Dillon. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 58 years, Louise H. Bowles; daughters and sons-in-law, Melinda Bowles LaPrade and husband, Bob of Johnson City, Tennessee, Mary Lynn Bowles Fothergill and husband, Bobby of Roanoke, Virginia; beloved grandchildren, Emma Claire and Ellen Bradley LaPrade, Erin Louise and Bryce Carlton Fothergill; beloved stepgrandson, Greyland Lee LaPrade; a sister, Chappie Bowles Firebaugh; sisters-in-law, Judy Chitwood Hodges, Imogene McDaniel Bowles; a brother-in-law, James Dallas Hodges and his wife, Virginia Drewry Hodges, all of Rocky Mount; nieces and nephews. He served with the Army's 79th Division in the European Theatre during World War II and was awarded a Purple Heart for wounds received in Germany. He retired from E.I.DuPont in Martinsville after 37 years of service. He was a longtime member of Rocky Mount Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) having served as a Deacon, Greeter, and member of the Property Committee and Board. "Poppy" was always a sharp dressed man who took great pride in his perfectly manicured lawn and immaculate cars. He was an avid gardener and landscaper who loved Nascar racing, spending time with his grandchildren, and traveling. The family would like to express their deep love and appreciation to Karen Tosh, R.N., devoted hospice nurse and Kitty Ruby, C.N.A. In addition, they would like to thank Drs.
