KARNES, Claude Swanson

Claude Swanson Karnes, 82, of Bedford, died Friday, May 19, 2006 in the Avante at Roanoke Health Care Center. Born September 28, 1923 in Bedford County, a son of the late Albert Cleveland Karnes and Kate Winston Toms Karnes. He was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church and a United States Army veteran having served during World War II. He was also a member of the Bedford Odd Fellows Lodge and a retired supervisor of Bedford Weaving Mill. In addition to his parents, Claude was preceded in death by two brothers, Albert Karnes and G. Dean Karnes; and one sister, Lois H. Karnes. Claude is survived by his wife of 54 years, Dorothy Hale Karnes; a brother, Eugene Karnes and his wife, Virginia of Vinton; and his twin brother, Clyde Karnes and his wife, Estelle of Bedford; two sisters, Catherine Karnes and Rebecca Karnes, both of Roanoke; two sisters-in-law, Estelle Karnes of Bedford and Offie Karnes of Roanoke; and numerous nieces and nephews. A celebration of Claude's life will be conducted at 10 a.m., Monday, May 22, 2006 in the Tharp Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Milton E. Marks officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood cemetery. PAYNE, Stephen

Stephen Payne, 50, of Lynchburg, formerly of Bedford, passed away on Friday, May 19, 2006. Arrangements by Bedford Funeral Home.

THOMASON, Clyde E.

Clyde E. Thomason, 84, of Hardy, formerly of Vinton, passed away suddenly on Thursday, May 18, 2006 and is now entered into his Heavenly home. He was a member of White Rock Baptist Church, Vinton Masonic Lodge #204, Roanoke Scottish Rite Bodies and Kazim Temple Shrine. He was also a member of HH MacKenzie DAV Chapter #3, VFW Post #4522, Vinton American Legion Post #80, Vinton Moose Lodge #1121. He served in the Army during World War II and received a Bronze Star and retired from US Steel and was a member of the Steel Works Organization of Active Retirees. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian St.Clair Thomason; two brothers, Carl D. and Alexander Thomason; four stepsisters, Clara Dillon, Judy Scott, Opal Cook, and Dotsie Johnson. Surviving are his wife, Louise Thomason; stepdaughters, Judy and husband, Mark Johnson, Sandy and husband, Chris Foster; grandchildren, Sara, Emily, Leah and Matthew; sister, Christine Slough; half brother, Melvin Doc Dillon; half sisters, Melva Smith, Barbara Boussman, Dearl Holland; stepbrother, Joseph Dillon; stepsister, Tootsie Terrell. The family offers thanks and gratitude to the Hardy Rescue Squad and Emergency Staff at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hardy Rescue Squad or the D-Day Memorial in Bedford, Va. A service honoring the life of Clyde will be held at Oakey's Vinton Chapel on May 22, 2006 at 12 noon with Chris C. Foster, Pastor, officiating. Masonic Rites by Vinton Masonic Lodge #204 will follow. Entombment will be at Old Dominion Memorial Gardens with Military Rites by VFW Post #1265. VESTAL-MILLER, Elizabeth Anne

Elizabeth Anne Vestal-Miller, 67, of Rocky Mount, Va., formerly of Sterling, Va., died on Friday May 19, 2006. Devoted mother of Linda M. Freeman of Vienna, Va. and T. Mark Miller of Annandale, Va.; two grandchildren, Wesley and Jacob Miller; cousin of Yvonne Chitwood of Rocky Mount, Va.; niece of Harry Cox of Rocky Mount, Va. Elizabeth Anne was an avid dog lover and genealogy researcher. A memorial service will be held at Rocky Mount United Methodist Church, 35 North Main St., Rocky Mount, Va. 24151 on Thursday, May 25, 2006 at 11 a.m. Interment icon Roselawn Memorial Park, Martinsville, Va. following the service. FRIEL, Joshua James

Joshua James Friel, 18, of Floyd, suddenly passed away on Wednesday, May 17, 2006. Josh was an Honor student at Floyd County High School. He was going to graduate this June. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and was scheduled for deployment in August. Josh worked with his grandfather James for the past few years building beautiful decks. He had a passion for working with his hands and creating beautiful things for other people to enjoy. He took pride in everything he accomplished from schoolwork to watching his siblings to creating decks. He was a wonderful son, brother, grandson, great-grandson, uncle, nephew, cousin, and friend. We all will miss him and his scientific arguments each and every day. He was and still is greatly missed and loved by all that knew him. Josh was preceded in death by his grandmother, Edith Friel. He is survived by his mother, Colleen Wallis; sisters, Samantha Walser, Laura Friel, and "special sister" Jamie Calabria; brothers, John Friel and Justin Kliovski; great-grandmothers, Irene Schriefer, Sylvia Jean Huffman; grandparents, Nancy and Ron Cross, James and Hazel (Phillips) Huffman; great-uncle and aunt, Teddy Joe and Shelia Huffman; nephew and nieces, Rollen, Felicia, and Nicholas, and special friend, Michael "B.J." Barrett; and numerous extended family and friends. A private funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, May 20, 2006 at Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Graham Mitchell officiating with interment to follow at Jacksonville cemetery. MILAM, Mary Ruth Hobbs

Mary Ruth Hobbs Milam, 96, of Cascades Drive in Pembroke, Va., departed this life Thursday morning, May 18, 2006 from Riverview Nursing Home in Rich Creek, Va. Born in Pennington Gap in Lee County, Va. on January 18, 1910, she was a daughter of the late Isaac and Willie Watson Pennington. She attended Radford College and graduated from Lincoln Memorial University. She taught school in Pennington Gap for five years and was a member of First Baptist Church in Pennington Gap. She was preceded in death by her husbands Audrey B. Hobbs and Otey Milam. She leaves to cherish her memory a son, Ronald Hobbs of Pembroke, Va.; a daughter, Doris Jean Usko of Lady Lake, Fla.; seven grandchildren; five greatgrandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. The family will receive friends 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday afternoon, May 21, 2006 at the Kendall Funeral Home in Pembroke, Va. and two hours before the funeral Monday, May 22, 2006 at the Sturgill Funeral Home in Pennington Gap. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, May 22, 2006 at 2 p.m. in the Sturgill Funeral Home in Pennington Gap, Va. Burial will follow in the Hobbs cemetery at Pennington Gap.

NICHOLSON, Robert Leslie

Robert Leslie Nicholson, 49, of Blacksburg, passed away Wednesday, May 17, 2006. Funeral services will be conducted 10 a.m. Saturday, May 20, 2006 at the Horne Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Olen Gardner officiating. Interment icon will follow in Restvale cemetery, Floyd, Va. The Nicholson family is being served by Horne Funeral Service, Christiansburg, 382-2612.

Lonnie Edward Wells

Wells, Lonnie Edward, 42, of Elliston, Va, passed away on April 20, 2009.

He was born on March 2, 1967. He has been a longtime employee at Hubble Lighting in Christiansburg, Va. He was also a licensed Pentecostal minister. Lonnie was a kind, loving and gentle person who was always willing to help anyone.

He is survived by his parents, Charles William Wells and Betty Jo Oliver Wells, of Elliston, Va.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Charles Jr. and Linda Wells, Gerald and Sandy Wells, sisters & brothers-in-law, Gana and Danny Reed, all of Elliston, Va, Anita and Ralph Keen, of Austinville, Va, Veronda and Emilio Zaga, of Salem, Va. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews, Jennifer Eversole, Pamela Conner, Amanda Cheatwood, Sonja Garber, Hannah Wells, Abigail Wells, Sarah Wright, Ginger Gordon, Jeremy Woods, Dwight Reed, Samuel Wells, Matthew Wells, Nathan Wells, Trevor Zaga, Victor Zaga; eleven great nieces and nephews; special friends, Ricky and Rita Smith.

The family will receive friends, 5-8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 22, 2009 at the Horne Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 23, 2009 at the Horne Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. James Walker and Rev. Michael Schaffer officiating. Interment icon to follow at Halls Church cemetery in Elliston, Va.

Ruby Darlene Turner

Turner, Ruby Darlene, of Christiansburg 67, passed away on April 22, 2009. She was born on April 17, 1942. She is preceded in death by her parents, James H. Turner and Maggie Whitlow; and by her brother, Calvin Turner.

She is survived by her children, Theresa Turner, of Radford, VA and Larry & Connie Conley, of Christiansburg, VA, also surviving are her grandchildren, Ryan, Keely, Samantha; two brothers and their spouses, Curtis and Sue Ellen Turner, of Jonesboro, TN, and Terry and Debbie Turner, of Bainbridge, GA; special family member, Dana Duncan.

The family will have a special memorial service, 5-8 p.m., Friday, April 24, 2009 at Horne Funeral Home.

Doris Adkins McGuire Tolley

Tolley, Doris Adkins McGuire, 79 of Christiansburg went to be with her heavenly father on Wednesday, April 22, 2009.

She joined in heaven her father and mother Harry and Iva Adkins; brothers, Marvin and Roger Adkins, sister Colleen McGhee, sisters-in-laws Doris Adkins, Violet Woolwine, Virginia Harmon, brothers in-law Steve Woolwine, Jim Harmon, and grandson Lynn Akers.

Surviving is her husband of 49 years Walter Tolley, Sr.; her mother-in-law Rena Tolley, sisters and brothers-in-law, Elizabeth and Claude Hill, Faye and Mike Fisher, sister-in-law Adell Adkins, brother-in-law Bobby McGhee; children, Cheryl, Elisha, Regina, Todd, Walter Jr., Connie, Donald, Darrell, Thomas, Ronald; grandchildren, Ashley, Chasity, Miranda, Courtney, Whitney, Tammy, Wayne, Jeff, Thomas “George”, Mark and Linberg. several nieces and nephews and many special friends.

She was a devoted Christian of the Walton Pentecostal Holiness Church. The family would like to acknowledge Rev. Lee Sarver and brother Don Leonard. We would also like to thank Dr. Jose Rivero and caring PCU and ICU nursing staff at Montgomery Regional. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 pm Friday, April 24th at the Horne Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, April 25th at the Walton Pentecostal Holiness Church conducted by Pastor Lee Sarver. Interment icon will follow in Highland Memory Gardens, Dublin.

Pastor David E. Seymour

Seymour, Pastor David E., age 62, of Lower Paxton Township, PA, passed away on Tuesday, April 21, 2009.

He was born on March 12, 1947 in Fitchburg, MA to the late Albert and Persis (Glidden) Seymour. A US Army veteran of the Vietnam War, he was a Pastor with and member of Harrisburg First Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Barbara J. (Ratcliffe) Seymour; a son, Matthew R. Seymour of Harrisburg, PA; a daughter, Ashley A. Felix and husband, Richie, Watsontown, PA; his twin brother, Dan Seymour and wife, Sue of South Lancaster, MA; sisters, Connie Seymour, Worcester, MA, Beverly Lance of Roanoke, VA, Norma Niemi and husband, Paul of Fitzwilliam, NH, his father-in-law and mother-in-law, George and Dorothy Ratcliffe of Pilot, VA; a granddaughter, Peyton Felix and two step grandsons, Billy and Jacob Felix.

Memorial contributions in Pastor David’s Honor may be made to Harrisburg First Seventh-day Adventist Church, 424 North Progress Avenue, Harrisburg, PA 17109. The family will receive friends Monday, April 27th, from 1 until 2 pm at the Horne Funeral Home, Christiansburg, VA. A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday in Sunset cemetery, Christiansburg, VA.

Leon Hilton Gillis

Gillis, Leon Hilton, 89, of Pulaski, VA, died peacefully on Sunday, October 31, 2010. He was born in poverty in Telfair County, Georgia on November 11, 1920, to Bessie and Hilton Gillis.

He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Floyd E. Gillis, Franklin Gillis, James M. Gillis; sister, Flora Gillis.

He learned to overcome many hardships throughout his life. In his young adult life in Washington, D.C. where he worked for the government at the Pentagon; shortly thereafter he entered various businesses of his own. At age 41 he began the second stage of his life, by building a covered wagon (The Last Wagon West) he took his family from Virginia to California taking 294 days.

The horse drawn wagon was the first and last wagon to ever go from coast to coast. He exposed his children to commerce, industry, and points of interest all along the way. In 1962 he shipped the wagon to Europe by freighter and boarded the Queen Mary with his family, they traveled through France, Holland, Belgium, Luxembourg, West Germany, Czechoslovakia, Poland and on to Moscow where their trip was highlighted in Life Magazine, which was an amazing feat in itself because it was during the Cold War.

Always champion of the underdog, he gave freely of his life and possessions, from Acupalco, to Daytona, to the New River, he spent many wonderful days in the sunshine which he loved. His story continues to fascinate people of all ages.

A book is expected to be released in 2011 commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the Last Wagon West.

He is survived by former wife and mother of his children, Iyone Koland Gillis; his children, Lee Ann Olmos, Alan Gillis, Susie Pontone, and Janet Voss, all of Christiansburg, George Gillis, of Roanoke, VA, and Barbara Esposito, of San Jose, California, and Ann Judy Gillis, of Washington, D.C.; his wife and companion of 25 years, Eileen S. Gillis. He leaves behind 11 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and a special nephew, Floyd Gillis.

The family will receive friends from 6p.m.-8p.m., Thursday, November 4, 2010 at the Horne Funeral Home. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, November 5, 2010 at the Horne Funeral Home Chapel, Christiansburg, VA.

Nina Hawley Lowery

Lowery, Nina "Sis" Hawley, 84, of Christiansburg, departed this life to be with the Lord on July 15, 2005 at Carilion New River Valley Medical Center.

She was born August 9, 1920 to Wade and Myrtle Hawley and was the only sister to seven brothers. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 46 years, Henry H. Lowery, her parents, Wade and Myrtle Hawley, seven brothers, Ray, Grover, Ellis "Ed", Stanley, James "Jim", Charles R.B., and Troy Hawley, a niece, Annabelle Rasnake, a nephew, Robert Hawley, and a special lifelong friend, Agnes Nunley.

She leaves to mourn her passing her grateful and devoted children and their spouses, Terry Wade Lowery, Perry Wayne and Debra Lowery, all of Christiansburg, Va., and Judy L. and Bruce Thomas, of Riner, VA.; four grandchildren, Wayne Lowery, Jason Lowery, Jonathan and Rebecca Thomas, all of Christiansburg, VA, and Lauren Thomas, of Riner, VA.; nephews, Bill, Bobby, Buddy, Nelson, Garfield, Ronnie, Darryl, Stanley, Jr., Tommy, Danny, Toby, Kevin, Michael, and Dale Hawley; nieces, Pauline Hawley, Jeanie Bishop, Barbara Sheppard, and Joy Galusha. Nina also leaves behind many friends and loved ones she has acquired in the course of her lifetime.

She is remembered by many simply as the "Cake Lady on 114" as she baked and decorated all occasion cakes for 32 plus years. Her family and friends will remember her as the loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend that she was. Her three children hold in memory the love and devotion she gave them and the wonderful example she set for them. She was greatly loved and will be greatly missed!

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Sunday, July 17th at the Horne Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, July 18th at the Horne Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Glenn M. Griffin and Jube Burke officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens.

The family would like to express their eternal gratitude to Dr.'s Leslie Badillo, Mark A. Ringold, Uzair Wyne, and Sarah Bradford and to the wonderful staff on the Surgical Care Suite, Progressive Care Suite, Endoscopy Suite, and Carilion Lab. at Carilion New River Valley Medical Center for the wonderful and loving care given to our dear Mother during her illness. The Lowery family is being served by Horne Funeral Service, 382-2612.

Kim Anita Troutt

TROUTT, Kim Anita, (Metcalf), of Copper Hill, departed this life on November 13, 2004 as results from a automobile accident.

She was born in Burnesville, NC on October 21, 1958. Kim was employed with Cracker Barrel Restaurant in Christiansburg where she served as a cook.

She is survived by her husband; Luther Troutt, her parents; Jim and Berneta Metcalf, step-daughter, husband and their child; Amelia and Carl Stevens and Katlyn, brother and sister-in-law; Jesse and Nancy Metcalf of Floyd, VA, sister and brother-in-law; Melody and Ben Sutphin of Roanoke, VA, niece and her husband; Crystal and Troy Irwin and their children; Brenna and Emma all of Christiansburg, VA, nephews; Jesse Metcalf, Jr. of Floyd, David Sutphin, niece; Harmony Sutphin both of Roanoke, special friend; Kim Rakes.

The family will receive friends Sunday, November 14, 2004 from 4 - 6 p.m. at The Horne Funeral Home in Christiansburg. The funeral service will be held 3 p.m. Monday, November 15, 2004 in The Horne Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Dewayne Troutt officiating. Interment icon will follow in Sunset cemetery.
